That was incredibly thorough & very helpful - thank you. For me it will be a Player but it's taken weeks to decide and this comparison a massive help. The lack of send/return on both is a negative but the architecture of ToneX a deal breaker for me. Thanks again - the most useful review of anything - ever.
Very good comparison, both units sound so close to the original it doesn't matter which one you go for. The only decision you have to make is whether you want your amp replacement made in Italy or Germany, haha.
Leo, your last video was incredibly beautiful and immensely inspiring. Forgive me for doing this, but I needed to say it. Very interesting test! I In addition to the differences in LUFS it was also noticeable that the difference in the null test between real amp and models was getting bigger the quiter the sound became in its releasse phase.
Thank you so much for such great compliments!!! I'm really happy that you appreciate the video and the explanations: it means a lot to me!!! Thank you!
Leo fantastic video. 👏 I have a bunch of 100 watt amps, I have a Kemper rack but the Tonex sounds and feels better then the Kemper. For me I was doubtful of Tonex and just purchased the software. Oh man I should have bought the pedal. Live and learn. So any one sitting on the fence buy the Tonex or now there is the Tonex One. I really dont care that Tonex doest have modulation or delays as I have pedals anyways. Tone is the most important and Tonex beats out the competition ie Fractal, Helix and Kemper. There is a new king 🤴
@@LeoGibsonGtr What about make a comparison between Boss ir3 and ToneX as inexpensive gears. Of course they have different concepts but for ampless solutions would be great.
llevo tonex desde que salió y la verdad que muy feliz, hubo sus problemitas en cuanto configuración, pero sus actualización y su grupo de amigos hizo que sea fácil de salir. Este año me voy por un segundo tonex para salida stereo
A great review and comparison Leo! Great job, really! What I would like to mention is, the "only" 2 FXs of the the Kemper in front and after the Amp/Cab. We should not forget, that there is a huge majority of people out there, who really don't need much more. On the other hand the ToneX offers more or less nothing in terms of FXs so you have to use (if you own) or buy additionally gear. For me the Kemper Player is a nice addition to my Kemper Stage just for those small gigs, where I just need the KP and a FRFR. But that's just my opinion - everyone another taste ;) Ciao!
Thank you so much, I'm really happy that you like the video!!! To me, the bigger limitation are the two only stereo effects after the cab....as I typically need a chorus reverb and delay. Of course just my opinion. Thanks!
Such a great video! I was happy to see the comparison of the Tonex pedal to the plug-in. I have both and felt the plug-in was more accurate - I guess I was correct. Also, having a dedicated graphics card that has tensor cores or cuda cores (to a lesser extent) dramatically speeds up the advanced profiling process. I bought a cheap, dated gpu and it brought my advanced profiling times from 2 plus hours to less than one hour. Note, I always test with a medium profile (10min) before trying advanced just to make sure I don’t need to tweak anything.
Hi, thank you so much, I'm really happy that you like the video and the tests!!! Yes, I also think that ToneX works better with nVidia GPU....I have a Mac Studio ultra....and IK should take into consideration also the Mac platform...in my opinino Thank you!
First of all, BLESS you for doing this; it's a lot of work and much appreciated. I have the Tonex and gigged in combo with the HX Stomp, which covers all territory, but I've also done it with analog pedals before and after, and it's a CHAMP! My only gripe with the Tonex is the inability to tweak the gain on the gigs, but I can accomplish it with the OD patches on the HX Stomp. You can now find a used Tonex in the low $ 300s vs. the FULL price of the Kemper, so it's not close in terms of the value of the Tonex.
Leo. You are the greatest product demonstration and comparison resource on UA-cam! I always look forward to watching your new videos. ToneX for the win here!
Tonex is king! I’m hoping IK releases a Tonex pedal with built in FX, upgraded housing, and touch screen screen. I think it would be a killer in the market. Great comparison Leo, very informative.
But why do you need fx loop in Tonex? This is not a device that simulates a guitar chain, it is just an amplifier simulation. It must be treated as a single block in the chain. You can still attach physical effects both before and after the Tonex.
Thank you so much, I'm happy that you like the video! I have still to check out the film.....but I should open another channel...maybe called Stanley Spielberg...😀
I have seen many youtube comparison videos and yours my friend, belong to the top 5%! Bravo! Great work and thank you for sharing. I am sure you are helping many many people with such detailed and top notch videos.
I'm sure it sounds good, but twice the amount of ada conversion results in double the latency. Big turn off for alot of people and another reason why all in one is best
Perfect video as usual!!! Would be interesting to have NAM comparison too :) It’s said to be supported by Line6 and Eventide in years to come… (only rumors for now)
Thank you so much!!!! Actually NAM performs better than ToneX....even if it has some aliasing occurring....at least when I tested it in much. Line 6 supporting NAM would be great!!! Thank you!
@LeoGibsonGtr The new 96khz oversampling is reported to have helped this big time. There a few guys in the facebook Nam user group that have been prototyping some hardware devices for it too and I can't wait to see what comes out over the next few years. Imagine having full component level capturing where it can do each section of the tone stack gain and power transformer ect. It's gonna be game changing stuff
Great video and totally thorough as usual. The biggest reason for a Kemper for me (and why I still use mine all the time) is when paired with Kemper Kones. I have both Kemper + 2x12 Kones and also Tonex + 2x12 Celestion F12-X200 (frfr) -- the Kemper really feels like an amp in the room, the Tonex, even when I EQ the hell out of it, is always sub-par. Maybe you should do some amp in the room comparisons. Can't touch the kemper in the room, which is why you see all the PRO's using them live. Not sure how the Tonemaster with it's dedicated Fender FR speakers holds up.
Hi, thank you for sharing your experience. It would be an interesting test, even if I don't see a method with which I can make an unbiased "test in the room"....other than ending up how it sounds in my opinion. I will think about it. Thanks
Thanks for doing this! New to all of this profiling stuff, and recently found out about the Kemper. Was very curious how this compares to the tonex, and this video answered all of my questions.
Hi, thank you so much, I'm really happy that you like the video and the song!!!! Thank yuo for taking the time to live a feedback!!! It means a lot to me!!!!
Much appreciated. General unscientific opinions on the internet was that the Tonex sounded better than the Kemper. Nice to see some research to back that up, and that unscientific opinions actually match up to the test.
Thank you for taking time to do these comparisons and breaking out the differences of specs and functionality between the devices. This really helps with products like these as they have many features. It can take a lot of time to discover the advantages or disadvantages of a product. Watching your videos are a great resource.
Leo, you nailed it. Again! It’s becoming a habit, at every launching I come here to see your review. I count on it already 😊 Congratulations for the good work! Thanks
Thank you so much for letting me know!!! I'm really happy to be of some help!!! And I hope to be able to maintain the same consideration from you even in the next years!!! Thanks!!!
For me, Tonex has managed to kick Kempers butt. I´m a really big fan of Kemper and used these since 2014! This device still sounds great, but the minute, I got Tonex, my Kemper has very rarely been switched on. Tones just feels way better in my opinion than the Kemper. The limitations of the Player are too big of an issue to me; considering the price. I have a neat little pedalboard with Tonex, HX Stomp, my old trusty TS9 and a H9. In my opinion, Tonex takes Pedals way better than Kemper. I really think that Kemper has to take a larger step for any futher products when it comes to competition. Enough blabla: Thank you very much for your intense and comprehensive testing! Very appriciated! Best regards from germany :)
Thank you, a very interesting comparison! Give it another few years and I reckon you'll be comparing devices, that take many multiples of profiles of an amps settings, a bit like todays snapshot, vs a movie. It's amazing what we have access to now and it will continue to evolve. I wonder if a time will come when the difference between a real amp and model will be indistinguishable, even with scientific tests.
You are welcome and I'm happy that you find the video interesting!!! Interesting points....and yes, we have now really good units to make music! Can't wait to see what it will possible to get in the future!!!
... and this is why I've never been a tone chaser. They all sound great to me. A compliment I received years ago from a fellow musician was "whatever you plug into you always sound great." I have no idea. I prefer to get something I like then play. That's it. I recently bought the Boss ir-2 because I couldn't justify using my old Roland GP100 for everything (18 bit modeler from early 90's) even though I like it I wanted to upgrade my studio options and 32 bit 96 kHz is what sold it to me. Having said all that I do enjoy these videos mainly for the playing, not the comparisons.
Thank you so much Leo for the amazing job you do with this comparisons, I really enjoyed, it is very helpful, and technically unbiased. Congratulations!!
@@LeoGibsonGtr I have now subscribed and watched many of your videos. You are a very honest and genuine UA-camr and your information is a great help for a beginner/intermediate like myself to better understand some of these subjects. It appears to me that IK blurr the line a little between TONEX and AmpliTube with their mac/iOS software. I would be very interested if you did a more recent video on AmpliTube vs TONEX, how they can work together (and how they are different), and if AmpliTube can now be used with this TONEX pedal as a standalone solution.
Seems to me the TONEX would be good in the effects loop of another modeller, to beef up the selection of amps. Fantastic detailed job as useful. Really useful! Where would we be without you? I love the song too. Thank you for just being there.
Thank you Leo for your hard work and for graciously giving back to the guitar community. In the first music section example the original Lonestar seems to have more low end than both the profilers. In this same example the ToneX seems to have more low end than the Kemper but is brighter than both. I wouldn’t mind hearing this comparison at the exact same location in the track for all 3. I think this would be helpful.
I was waiting for this video. I knew you would do it perfectly. I enjoy the way you are testing every single thing and I really appreciate the hard work.I am considering buying one of them and I know which one I need. Unfortunately, the price of Tonex is very high in the country I live in, so maybe on my next trip abroad I will buy one for less money.
Fantastic job Leo! Thank you! I am surprised by noticing- listening carefully with an excellent headphone - that the real amps are more pleasant for me, more musical! Tonex seems great value for money!
Great video, as usual. It'd be very interesting to make the test with different settings of the tonestacks, not only the gain parameter. Thank you, Leo!
I have a few NeuralDSP plugins, the Softube amp studio package, all of UAD’s amp plugins, a bunch of Brainworx and Nembrini amp models, S-Gear 2.9, a Helix LT…to my ears the Tonex pedal has blown me away and sounds better and more responsive than all of my other options(I play mostly clean and edge of breakup), which surprised me because I don’t think too highly of IK Multimedia. Very cool pedal, GREAT value, best to try it and see for yourself.
Great video Leo. Loved the demo song as always. I'd have to agree with you that the Tone X, with all its features is a more compelling buy than the Kemper Player at this time. I don't have any need to profile my own amps, so that missing feature from the Kemper isn't a deal breaker for me. God bless and rock on 🎸😎👍
Brilliant video. I love my Kemper Stage, and have just bought the Tonex to try it, but will possibly buy the Player as well to try, not least as the profiles and FX make it a single gigging solution. Silly neither has an FX loop, would love to have added my HX Effects with the Tonex in 4CM. As an aside, I also have a Blackstar Amped 2 and BluGuitar Mercury and am not getting on with either particularly well, hence the Tonex purchase…..
I have used a Tonex since its release and have to say it sounds far more accurate than anything else on the market. I profiled all my Vintage amps in a day and downloaded the best of what I would physically buy if I could afford them. I use a zoom G1four for my delay and chorus. £480 total for my ampless setup. Probably sounds the best out front ever. Great test and glad that the cheaper unit won the tone battle 🙂
I still think Nam is more accurate but it still doesn't have a hardware device readily available yet to play it live so I'm using tone x in the mean time until that day comes and I'm hoping when/if it does get that the device can load multiple plugins and instances of nam in unison with stuff like helix native and the two notes wall of sound plugins. If that day comes then I'll be able to sell my tone x and hx fx combo.
You are the only reviewer to even mention throughput delay, a spec of the highest importance for a live performance device. Thank you for that. Did you measure or is it taken from the manufacturer? The reason I ask is that processing delay CAN vary widely per effect use, depending on the architecture each manufacturer uses. 3ms is generally good but getting up there into the realm of possible problems for some. The conversion rate of 44.1 doesn’t help, being responsible for about half the total.
@@LeoGibsonGtr Thanks for showing me your measurement is a full round trip. 3ms is the equivalent of an analog connected guitar amp’s speaker 3’ from your ears, which isn’t the end of the world. I’m unsurprised by Boss being at the top. They have serious engineering resources to tap. 1ms is at the theoretical limit and implies a very high spec dedicated DSP in use. Companies like Boss and Roland use such big $ devices in many of their products so they can afford to port this technology over to their more humble pieces. They are to be highly commended for such diligence. They also use 96k conversion which halves that portion of the latency. I tip my hat to you for bringing latency to light for guitarists. I am keeping your findings to advise the players I consult for. Anyone over 5ms should not be recommended to a professional musician. 3ms is considered serious effort. 10ms is literally clown-car delay. It’s an ‘effect’ the user isn’t asking for. Thanks for your excellent work, Leo!
@@LeoGibsonGtr You’re a valued resource here, answering the questions pros ask. You have the diligence and restraint to serve your audience without slipping over the edge into ‘audition mode.’ The absolute repeatability of re-amped and tweaked tones are a MUST for these finicky players. That’s very much appreciated and I’ve dropped a recommendation to my Twitter followers. All the best to you, Leo.

Hi, you are welcome and I'm happy that you appreciate the video!!1
Thank you also for sharing your findings and your experience....good point about eq....
That was incredibly thorough & very helpful - thank you. For me it will be a Player but it's taken weeks to decide and this comparison a massive help. The lack of send/return on both is a negative but the architecture of ToneX a deal breaker for me. Thanks again - the most useful review of anything - ever.
Thank you so much, I'm really happy to have been of some help!
Thank you also for sharing your final choice!
Very good comparison, both units sound so close to the original it doesn't matter which one you go for. The only decision you have to make is whether you want your amp replacement made in Italy or Germany, haha.
Hi, thank you for sharing and I'm really happy that you appreciate the video!!!
Leo, your last video was incredibly beautiful and immensely inspiring. Forgive me for doing this, but I needed to say it. You're not just the best guitar gear reviewer, but also an amazing human being. I'm sure I'm talking for everyone here when I tell you this: Know you are loved and admired, and that we all hope that you and your family get through this (always) difficult and (unavoidable) emotional experience in life as best as you can. ❤
Thank you so much for such amazing compliments and for such great words of wisdom!
I really appreciate your support and your message!
Thank you so much! You know that it means a lot to me!
Very interesting test! I In addition to the differences in LUFS it was also noticeable that the difference in the null test between real amp and models was getting bigger the quiter the sound became in its releasse phase.
Thank you, I'm happy that you appreciate the test!!
Thank you also for sharing your findings!!!
Never seen any reviewer better than this guy and I watched a lot.
Hi, thank you so much for such amazing compliment!!!
Thank you for taking the time to live a feedback: It means a lot to me!!!
Holy cow! What a lot of work for the greater good of the guitar playing community. Thank you.
You are welcome and I'm really super happy that you appreciate the video!!!
Leo! You always have the best objective comparison/demo reviews. Killer playing in the intro and really appreciate the info 🫶💯🎸🔥
Thank you so much, I'm really happy that you appreciate the video and the playing!!!
Leo you deserve more followings man.. you explain so so so much better compared to other channels man..
Thank you so much, I'm really happy that you like the video!
Thank you also for sharing your opinions and your findings!
Leo, you did it again. Nobody does comparison tests as you do. Congrats!
Thank you soooo much, I'm really happy that you appreciate the videos and the tests!!!
@@LeoGibsonGtr What about make a comparison between Boss ir3 and ToneX as inexpensive gears. Of course they have different concepts but for ampless solutions would be great.
Thank you so much.
I have tone x and plethora x5 and I happy with this simple and lightweight solution.
Best regards.
You are welcome and thank you for sharing your set up and your findings!!!
I watched youTube to see your gear reviews, but it seems like your performance is getting more beautiful day by day.
Thank you so much for such amazing compline, I'm really happy that you appreciate the videos!!
llevo tonex desde que salió y la verdad que muy feliz, hubo sus problemitas en cuanto configuración, pero sus actualización y su grupo de amigos hizo que sea fácil de salir. Este año me voy por un segundo tonex para salida stereo
Hi, thank you so much for sharing your experience and your findings!
Yes, I also think that ToneX works better with nVidia GPU....I have a Mac Studio ultra....and IK should take into consideration also the Mac platform...in my opinino
Thank you!
Sei un grande, Leo. Ti ringrazio. Un sentido pesame y mucho amor from Miami
Grazie a te Alvaro!!!
Thank you so much for your message: it means a lot to me!!!
Hi, thank you so much, I'm really happy that you appreciate the video!!!

Been looking forward to this video since the unit was announced!
Thank you !!! I hope you have enjoyed the video!!!
Tonex is king! I’m hoping IK releases a Tonex pedal with built in FX, upgraded housing, and touch screen screen. I think it would be a killer in the market. Great comparison Leo, very informative.
Yes, I do agree...I also hope for such a unit!!
Thank you so much for your feedback, I'm really happy that you appreciate the video!!
But why do you need fx loop in Tonex? This is not a device that simulates a guitar chain, it is just an amplifier simulation. It must be treated as a single block in the chain. You can still attach physical effects both before and after the Tonex.
@MrPortrop to be more fair when u compare with all in one units ,i dont even think why ik did not put fx inside and hold crown till nam devices came
I've been waiting for a video from you since they released the Player. But this time you exceeded expectations. Perfect! hugs from Brazil.

This makes me feel good about my choice of HX Stomp/Tonex combination.
Thank you for sharing!
I'm sure it sounds good, but twice the amount of ada conversion results in double the latency. Big turn off for alot of people and another reason why all in one is best
Just heard about your father. ! So sorry Leo ! Much much love to you and your family ! Keep strong ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much for your kind message!
dude this is the sweetest comparison video i have ever seen.
Thank you so much, I'm really happy that you like the video!!
Perfect video as usual!!! Would be interesting to have NAM comparison too :)
It’s said to be supported by Line6 and Eventide in years to come… (only rumors for now)
Thank you so much!!!!
Actually NAM performs better than ToneX....even if it has some aliasing occurring....at least when I tested it in much.
Line 6 supporting NAM would be great!!!
Thank you!
Would be only interesting to me if there's a hardware product for NAM
Fascinating results. NAM compatibility on Line 6 Modelers is something I'd like as well.
Me too!!!
Thanks
Stellar work. No one does what you do in the UA-cam. Auguri!

Yes! This is the way!!! The Null Test does not lie.
Thank you so much, I'm happy that you appreciate the method I followed!
You are welcome and than you so much for sharing your opinions and your findings!!!!
You are F&$%ing awesome! You just won the Nobel for profiling comparison. This study should be norm going forward :)
😀... thank you so much, I'm really happy that you have appreciated the video and the methodology!!!
... and this is why I've never been a tone chaser.

I can only imagine how many hours this must have taken, thank you for all the hard work!! Amazing video

Thank you so much! I know what you mean....I already miss him...
You are welcome and thank you for your feedback!!!!
I will see what I can do...maybe a short.

I enjoy the way you are testing every single thing and I really appreciate the hard work.I am considering buying one of them and I know which one I need.
Unfortunately, the price of Tonex is very high in the country I live in, so maybe on my next trip abroad I will buy one for less money.

It'd be very interesting to make the test with different settings of the tonestacks, not only the gain parameter. Thank you, Leo!
Thank you so much!!!
Yes!!! It's exactly what I'm doing....😀
Great!! 😊
Hi, thank you so much for sharing your experience and your findings!
Great video Leo. Loved the demo song as always. I'd have to agree with you that the Tone X, with all its features is a more compelling buy than the Kemper Player at this time. I don't have any need to profile my own amps, so that missing feature from the Kemper isn't a deal breaker for me. God bless and rock on 🎸😎👍
Thank you so much, you know that when you like my music...you make me happy!!!

Wow Gary, thank you so much for your donation: it means a lot to me!!!!
Hi, thank you so much for sharing!!!
Hi, thank you so much for sharing your experience and your findings!!
Thank you so much!!!!
Yes, I measured the latency myself. Here you can check out how I did it: ua-cam.com/video/oU0-_3Hub9o/v-deo.html
Thanks!
You are welcome and I'm really happy to have been of some help!!!
You are the best! Thanks for the in depth work.
