Q1 in 2024 sounds great! :) enjoyed watching parts of your top 100 (haven't watched it all..), your list is quite different as mine would be, but I knew that from the start (we have quite a different taste), so I enjoy seeing a lot of games I haven't heard of a lot or haven't played at all so far.. keep up the great work! and, it was nice meeting and chatting with you a little @ Essen this year.. ^^

Great list as usual. I agree with Q1 since that gives you time to check out the newer releases and reflects the whole year properly. Maybe do a one time update this upcoming Q1 to see how these new games are doing?
Thanks for wrapping up the top 100, well done Luke! 🎊 As for the next one, Q2 makes sense. By that time, you should have reviewed all the major releases to hit the Essen and Christmas season, also we will have more time to let some hype settle (hopefully). 😂
Well list Luke. We have a lot of cross overs: My top Games 1) Innovation 2) spirit Island 3) Seeders Exodus 4) Spyfall 5) Gaia Project 6) Trickerion, anachrony or any thematic euro game like ark nova ;) 7) crew 8) Galaxy Defenders for its AI 9) SW rebellion - best sw game or war of the ring - best lotr game 10) war of whipers - best GoT game
I think it scales well enough. You basically can buy off your opponent and there's likely more incentive to populate the lord row manually as you won't cycle them as much. I feel 3 players is a sweet spot.
My initial thought for the next Top 100 of all time was summer next year. Still, I am going to watch it regardless of the timing. I want to try some games on this list, especially Abyss. If you are intrigued by superhero games, you might really like Tokyo Sidekick. Wanted to mention it at Essen, but forgot about it. It is a co-op game with lots of deck-building, action selection and abilities, yet never feels too complicated. Exploring the different combinations of heroes and sidekicks is so much fun and for me the best way to play it is two-handed solo as it gives me the possibility to get sucked into the world they built and enjoy the entertaining flavour text.
I'm very interested in Whistle Mountain. Whistle Stop was good but Mountain looks better, I love worker placement, and your review of it makes it look very interesting.
I love your lists and reviews. I’ve bought Spirit Island but only played about 10 times and only 2 different spirits. I like it but I was playing solo with one spirit. I’m going to move to 2 solo and then try teaching it. I want to see the synergies. I have the digital version of Sentinels and I love it. Not sure if I like it better than Marvel Champions but I asked about Marvel United or Champions and they said since I liked Sentinels I should get Champions. It was the right call. I love both games
Thank you for the top 100. Life has been crazy (in a good way) so had to dip out for a while but nice to come back to the top 100. I would do the top 100 when you feel most comfortable. Personally I prefer January; although I would feel sad waiting 15 months for the next top 100 (unless it will only be 3 months 😜). Thanks again for the top 100 😀
I'm all for what is easiest for you, as far as when you publish the Top 100. I'm okay if you publish it every other year, as long as you provide your top 10 or 20 for that year. I'm interested in your content.
none of your top 18 would be anywhere near my top 20 because we have very very different tastes. To many of those games feel like your playing on your own with other people in the room!!!! However different views are the spice of life and i really enjoyed your top 100 so thanks for doing it always fun to watch.
I got many that are co-ops, a party game, one where you buy off other players, one where you build a communal map, one where you arrest other workers - those feel pretty interactive to me. I can get that with say, Ark Nova but I'm curious which other ones you class as playing on your own? Of course many thanks for watching!
@@TheBrokenMeeple 7 wonders + dual, wingspan, mansions of madness ark nova spirit island viticulture etc etc.... These are all games that have almost no interaction between players. Denial of a something is not an interaction as it is just a board state there is nothing you can do to change that board state when it is your turn so it's not really a interaction in the true sense of the word. Specifically I dislike intensely 7 wonders and wingspan (core) which are gateway style board games mediocre tablet building and effectively are irrelevant to you if other players are in the room. Solo with friends and coop are your bag and that's fine there is a just a lot of it on the list
@@spaceunicorn no we playing the same game the players do not directly interact in anyway maybe you will discuss a plan? maybe a strategy but no action you take affects someone else!
I’m going to add my voice (again) to the call for you to play Forgotten Waters if you want a scenario-based story game with NO campaign elements. It basically takes the Crossroads system from Dead of Winter and blows it out of the water by rolling it into an app that tracks your choices and providing a game that’s actually fun. Plus, great voice acting for all the NPCs!
Taste is weird, about half your top 10 I love, and we have the same number one, yet the other half don't appeal to me at all. 😂 And do the top 100 when it suits xou best, so if that's q1 am happy to vote q1.
My 2 cents (pennies?): if you do your Top 100 in Q1, you may not have had enough time to have played all your Essen loot and X-mas releases yet, so you might 'misplace' some of the new releases. If you can actually manage to work on your Top 100 right before the action starts (end of Q2), you probably will get better results. This year's edition must have been insane, with Essen happening when you still had the last 2 episodes to go...
That's a legit point, but I reckon I'll have got most of the Essen releases played by the end of Jan/start of Feb - not that many games release on Xmas itself.
Excellent group of games though I see our tastes diverge quite a bit this high up. I'm working on my last 10 edit now and I'll have to double check but I think I had Ark Nova at 3 as well.
(1) No pre-constructed deck building (2) Has its own universe outside of an IP (3) Real distinctions between characters, more so than even MC (4) More interesting villain decks (5) Environment deck throws another fun factor in the mix (6) Cheaper and doesn't require you to buy a hundred expansions. (7) Caters for 3-4 players more effectively.
Love Detective Club and this is probably just a weird "me" thing, but I hate the scoring. Not so much how you score, but literally the scoring values and tokens included, why 3, 4, 5 when it could have easily just been 1, 2, 3? I just remember there being so few 5's, and having to dig for them and with only 3, 4, 5 value tokens there's no just giving smaller values to add up like 1's and 2's. I'm not sure why they just didn't copy Dixit scoring in this regard, and honestly I should just pull out the dixit score board and use that. ha
Hey Luke. Thanks for taking time to put your top 100 together. I love Ark Nova, not played sentinels and like Spirit Island though need to spend more time learning the different spirits 🤯 Where do you get your board game wall art from?
If you run out of scenarios in MoM, pick up Valkyrie for 2-3 dozen more. Some of them have great voice acting and are very well put together! Kudos to the creators of it and the scenario authors.
I don’t know you as a dungeon crawl enthusiast, but Blacklist Games applied their formula in Altar Quest. You might want to try that if you have the chance.
Street King is a board game worth buying, mainly because of its theme, especially youth and blood. Especially for players who like fighting themes, it can be said to be the one of leaders in this type of board game.😘😘
I'm the only board gamer in existence that doesn't like Spirit Island, I think. I don't want to think that hard to play a cooperative game against a deck. Give me Brass or Gaia Project or a Splotter any time. I do want to try Ark Nova at some point.
@@J-Wheeler-G I like simple ones like Sprawlopolis on occasion. Or problem solving ones like MicroMacro or Consulting Detective. But Spirit Island exemplifies everything that I dislike about coops in general.
I’m not that fussed when you do the Top 100, I reckon you would be better to do 2023 Top 100 in June/July and then in 2024 shift it to Q1 that way it could work better than missing out a whole year to shift it to Q1. I would be intrigued to hear your top 20 or 50 games of 2022 in Q1 of 2023 and what the worst games were that you played (or overrated/hyped).
@@chuckm1961 You are wrong here, fella. Spirit Island was meant to include Branch and Claw. Jagged Earth is more of an expansion. Branch and Claw makes the game complete with Events and the various tokens.
If you really are interested, just start with the normal game which is more than enough to get a good feel. My gf and I only bought the base game, but did buy both expansions within a month after first playing it tho.
I agree people who are saying you can play the base game for quite a while. Getting used to the mechanics and trying out each spirit separately. It's not like other asymmetrical games like say a deck builder where an expansion is a new character who's just a few extra cards. Each spirit is completely different and takes time to figure out their best strategies. Branch and claw adds a TON of complexity to the game.
Q1 2024 for the next one sounds great. More chance on changes to the list, so content should be more interesting. I’ll vote that way when the poll drops.
List looked great but blacklist games is on my own blacklist after the disastrous kickstarter of their fantasy series 1 miniature line. I'm not sure I will ever see that delivered as a US backer. Interesting to hear you like Sentinels of the Multiverse even more than Marvel Champions!
Detective Club is great fun, but it has a problem with scoring. In Dixit, it flawlessly reinforces what you're supposed to do: the clue giver is incentivised to give a clue that's not too hard and not too easy, and the others are incentivised to play as good a card as they can - that's how they maximise points. In Detective Club, the clue giver's role is not so clear cut, because there's no sure way to influence how well the "spy" will do (should it be obvious? should it be super vague? you don't know their cards, so who knows what will work), but that I can deal with. More importantly, the other player's aren't always incentivised to play good cards - they get the points for finding the spy either way, and they may not want the other players to find them, especially if the clue giver is behind. Fortunately, this is one of the games where no one really cares about scoring, but it does turn it into more of an activity than a proper game. I'm looking for a variant that would fix this somehow, but haven't thought of one yet.
Spirit Island right now is in a brawl to be in my top spot with Marvel Champions. The two are neck and neck. Thanks for a great 100 - there are many games I've gotten into in the past year or so from watching your content. These lists are always great watches.
Just discovered Spirit Island. Yeah, LOTS of replay value. Fun game, especially multiplayer. I solo a lot to get better with a given spirit. One of my favorite combos is Ocean and Bringer of Dreams and Nightmares.
The only thing I kind of dislike about spirit island is the events. It happens way to many times that we select cards and for instance defend a spot only to make the event defend the exact same spot too. So we played 1-2 useless cards. I get that it's also the way the events are intended, but sometimes it feels like too much randomness. But I still always play with the events
It barely made the list I think in 2021. It was 8 I think at first, but it's quickly gone down - the lack of any theme and the bulk/size of it made me less excited to bring it out more.
Totally agree with your #1. Also agree with Mansions. Ark Nova is still on my SoS. 7 Wonders is not my cup of tea. I only own it because it is a decent game that can be played with 7 players. The rest I do not own.
@@TheBrokenMeeple it'll definitely give you a time to play the gencon hotness... I went in 2011...was totally overwhelmed by it...I'd love to go now in actuality know what I'm doing🤣😂🤣
if you want to try out another game with an app which is even better than the one from mansions of madness (at least in my opinion) you have to try forgotten waters! it even has an amazing voice acting included! and it's also scenario based. I absolutely love it. if you say you don't like it I fear we have a problem 😜
Option 3 : just go with a top 50 (or even a top 30) (30 games is waaaay enough really...) on q1! It's way enough for a great "top show" and spare you precious time to make more interesting content. About this top 10, I'm so happy to see street masters and detective club there! -Street masters, even if not perfect (and wich can be way too hard on some combination boss/stage) is such a great and dynamic miniatures coop game ! I wouldn't play it at more than 3p thus' (and only if the 2 other players knows the game) (coz it could be quite long) (1 or 2 is the best p.count). On a really bad note : I really dont' know if I will receive my pledge (aftershokz, essence of evil, twin tigers...) any day...? That company is soooo bad with the shipping... and since covid... Hope is vanished here... Détective club, starts to shine at 5 players (above that is even better) and his always funny on family nights! I defenatly have to try both Ark Nova and Whistle Mountains ! About abyss, I dropped it for his little brother : Conspiracy! wich is still beautiful, keep the essence of the original (with keys and gems) in such a better package and pacing for me! :) About Spirit island : are you playing it with the branch and claw and if yes, what are your thoughts on it? Must have or not? So glad I took that sentinels definitive Ed. So great! I believe that Sentinels is why you like street masters : they're quite similar on the setup aspect : chose a hero, take his prebuild deck, chose a stage and a boss. Take their decks and fight! ---- My little top 10 (for posterity) : 1)Aeon's end 2)LOTR LCG 3)Flipships 4)Cascadia 5)Spirit Island 6)Warp's Edge 7)Street Masters 8)Sentinels of the multiverse 9)Cthulhu Death May Die 10)Détective club Cheers and thanks for the content

Great list as usual. I agree with Q1 since that gives you time to check out the newer releases and reflects the whole year properly. Maybe do a one time update this upcoming Q1 to see how these new games are doing?
They will mostly get reviews and we've got the Top 10 of 2022 and the eventualy retrospective Top 10 that will cover that.
Thanks for wrapping up the top 100, well done Luke! 🎊 As for the next one, Q2 makes sense. By that time, you should have reviewed all the major releases to hit the Essen and Christmas season, also we will have more time to let some hype settle (hopefully). 😂
I think waiting 14 months will be a solid move for me, the list and my sanity!
Well list Luke. We have a lot of cross overs:
My top Games
1) Innovation
2) spirit Island
3) Seeders Exodus
4) Spyfall
5) Gaia Project
6) Trickerion, anachrony or any thematic euro game like ark nova ;)
7) crew
8) Galaxy Defenders for its AI
9) SW rebellion - best sw game or war of the ring - best lotr game
10) war of whipers - best GoT game
I think top 100 games of all time is better for Q1.
I have a question for Abyss, is it worth for 2 players?
I think it scales well enough. You basically can buy off your opponent and there's likely more incentive to populate the lord row manually as you won't cycle them as much. I feel 3 players is a sweet spot.
@@TheBrokenMeeple Thank you for your answer. Now I decide to buy Whistle Mountain.
January 2024 just gives me a bit of a sanity break and makes for a more jumbled up list compared to the prior year.
Fun list, as always, Luke! ^_^ Nice work!
Glad you enjoyed!
I'm very interested in Whistle Mountain. Whistle Stop was good but Mountain looks better, I love worker placement, and your review of it makes it look very interesting.
You should!
Take your time with Spirit Island, no harm in mastering a few spirits.
I think waiting 14 months will be a solid move for me, the list and my sanity!
I'm all for what is easiest for you, as far as when you publish the Top 100. I'm okay if you publish it every other year, as long as you provide your top 10 or 20 for that year. I'm interested in your content.
Next iteration will be 2024 Q1
Ark nova such a good game. Looking forward to the expansion next year.
none of your top 18 would be anywhere near my top 20 because we have very very different tastes.
@@drunken_physics Spirit Island no interaction between players?? I feel like we are playing completely different games
Add my voice to it too, FW is great. Only played it solo so far but can imagine it would be fun with a group too.
I'd like to try the game out for sure, but rather a try before buy affair.
Taste is weird, about half your top 10 I love, and we have the same number one, yet the other half don't appeal to me at all. 😂
And do the top 100 when it suits xou best, so if that's q1 am happy to vote q1.
Never heard of street masters seems really cool!
Thanks for another great iteration of your list, Luke! As far as when you do the top 100, it does not matter to me as long as you keep doing it.
Thanks! :D
Excellent group of games though I see our tastes diverge quite a bit this high up. I'm working on my last 10 edit now and I'll have to double check but I think I had Ark Nova at 3 as well.
Luke, why is Sentinels >> Marvel Champions to you? What makes it more appealing?
(1) No pre-constructed deck building
(2) Has its own universe outside of an IP
(3) Real distinctions between characters, more so than even MC
(4) More interesting villain decks
(5) Environment deck throws another fun factor in the mix
(6) Cheaper and doesn't require you to buy a hundred expansions.
I'm not sure why they just didn't copy Dixit scoring in this regard, and honestly I should just pull out the dixit score board and use that. ha
Does seem kind of pointless. . . .
Hey Luke. Thanks for taking time to put your top 100 together. I love Ark Nova, not played sentinels and like Spirit Island though need to spend more time learning the different spirits 🤯
Where do you get your board game wall art from?
The art looks like the art series from the Boardgamegeek shop. They have some nice boardgame related art.
Nope, the art is from a local Southsea duo called State of Playing - we showcase a few at Dice Portsmouth and Kienda have some on their website.
@@TheBrokenMeeple Nice. We're sorting a games room out next year so I'll have to remember to look them up.
If you run out of scenarios in MoM, pick up Valkyrie for 2-3 dozen more. Some of them have great voice acting and are very well put together! Kudos to the creators of it and the scenario authors.
Someone else mentioned Valkyrie, it's new on me, never heard of it. I'll have to look it up.
I don’t know you as a dungeon crawl enthusiast, but Blacklist Games applied their formula in Altar Quest. You might want to try that if you have the chance.
If i ever see it! :P
Abyss at number 4?? Amazing!!! You and i are like minded
Great minds!
Finally the good stuff. Jk been enjoying the whole countdown
Street King is a board game worth buying, mainly because of its theme, especially youth and blood. Especially for players who like fighting themes, it can be said to be the one of leaders in this type of board game.😘😘
I'll only need one kind in this genre though.
I'm the only board gamer in existence that doesn't like Spirit Island, I think. I don't want to think that hard to play a cooperative game against a deck. Give me Brass or Gaia Project or a Splotter any time. I do want to try Ark Nova at some point.
I don’t like it either!!!! Make that 2!
I dislike it as well! That’s 3!!!!
4. I actually don't like any Co-op.
@@J-Wheeler-G I like simple ones like Sprawlopolis on occasion. Or problem solving ones like MicroMacro or Consulting Detective. But Spirit Island exemplifies everything that I dislike about coops in general.
Ha ha it's not for everyone!
January. No brainer. We can wait the extra two months no problem.
That's the way it shall be!
Barrage #1, wow. Unexpected!
I think waiting 14 months will be a solid move for me, the list and my sanity!
Spirit Island has been on my radar for a long time now. Which expansions and extra stuff would you recommend I buy for it right off the bat?
There’s a new version, Horizons or something another, that could be a good entry to the game.
Um, it makes ZERO sense to buy expansions unless and until you know you like a game and want more. You could spend years just on the base game of SI.
Q1 2024 sounds good!
first time i see Abyss in a top ten, this game deserve more love ! It feels like everyone forgot it even exist !
It just came out in german at least via crowdfunding.
Then you had not seen Hector's previous top 10.
Some people have, but I'll bring it back!
Fair enough! I love the game, but I've heard about the chaos their latest KS has caused so I feel for the backers.
Bunny Kingdom is another great drafting game for 3-4. Of course Terraforming Mars.
The shirt!
Detective I never take seriously enough for scoring anyway - it's just too much fun throughout.
Told you several videos ago about Detective Club.
Yep! :D
Oooh mass fear!
Events can have those effects but sometimes they can save your bacon or cause havoc. I like the new choices and unpredictability.
Only 9ne of your top ten that would make my top 50!
Ark Nova?
@@TheBrokenMeeple yup.
Thank for the list. Most of these games are not my taste but Ark Nova saved it :) As for next one, Q1 2024 sounds perfect.
No problem!
am I crazy, or is dwellings of eldervale not in the top 100?
If I remember, he rated it a 6 or something like that.
It barely made the list I think in 2021. It was 8 I think at first, but it's quickly gone down - the lack of any theme and the bulk/size of it made me less excited to bring it out more.
Really! I could have sworn that you liked it more but I guess I was wrong. Thanks for the response!
At first it was solid though it only barely made the list before. Think it was a low 8 to begin with but it's dropped since.
Get on with it!! :D
called #3 being in the top 10 on the very first video 😎
Turkey dinners on Cadillacs and Dinosaurs?
You can play a reptilian and find a turkey dinner on a map that contains a cadillac............
Totally agree with your #1. Also agree with Mansions. Ark Nova is still on my SoS. 7 Wonders is not my cup of tea. I only own it because it is a decent game that can be played with 7 players. The rest I do not own.
As always, your top 10 is a bit quirky and off the beaten path. Thus its charm. Nicely done. Thanks.
Thank you kindly!
Option three - sliding time: 2023 July, 2024 February and from 2025 Q1. It's more work for you, but also more content, so maybe its good?
There's always alternative content to do - if i could just get my overhead cam setup sorted there's playthrough content that can fill a gap.
I know there will be a poll...but January makes sense...only 14 months and as you say it may really shake it up....I will vote too....
Yeah I've gone for Q1
@@TheBrokenMeeple think that's a good choice Luke....brings Gencon and Essen Spiel into play....👍😁
@@MicJames1 Well I didn't exactly have gencon in play normally but that was budget reasoning 😂
@@TheBrokenMeeple it'll definitely give you a time to play the gencon hotness...
I went in 2011...was totally overwhelmed by it...I'd love to go now in actuality know what I'm doing🤣😂🤣
Spirit Island is definitely great! Might pick up sentinels... sounds like just what I like.
It's so good!
if you want to try out another game with an app which is even better than the one from mansions of madness (at least in my opinion) you have to try forgotten waters! it even has an amazing voice acting included! and it's also scenario based. I absolutely love it. if you say you don't like it I fear we have a problem 😜
One day hopefullly!
Couldn't find the poll, but I think Q1 2024 makes the most sense
It was the Victor in the end.
Do the june next year and then the january 2024, only if its not a major time consuming issue.
It would be too time consuming to do two lists in such a short space of time.
Luke you can't tell me that after all this time you are still feeling giddy and excited to play 7 Wonders Duel? Like really?
Hell yeah, I play the app a lot when on transport. With Pantheon it's a great play physically. I can ask the same question to lovers of Feld games :P
I don't think I've learned that much from Ark Nova. Other than the scientific name there's not even flavor text. I guess I learned raccoons are bears.
About Spirit island : are you playing it with the branch and claw and if yes, what are your thoughts on it? Must have or not?
So glad I took that sentinels definitive Ed. So great!
I believe that Sentinels is why you like street masters : they're quite similar on the setup aspect : chose a hero, take his prebuild deck, chose a stage and a boss. Take their decks and fight!
----
My little top 10 (for posterity) :
1)Aeon's end
2)LOTR LCG
3)Flipships
4)Cascadia
5)Spirit Island
6)Warp's Edge
7)Street Masters
8)Sentinels of the multiverse
9)Cthulhu Death May Die
10)Détective club
Cheers and thanks for the content
I think waiting 14 months will be a solid move for me, the list and my sanity! Thanks for watching the list! And wow we gelled on many!
