Thank you for sharing how to lay out paths. It makes it easier to imagine how the garden beds will evolve. Lots of work ahead, but it will be worth it.
I’m looking forward to seeing a Dr Seuss garden! Would you consider a water feature at the beginning of the garden or maybe the end of a path? The sight and sound of water seems to draw people in.
Edgeworthia makes a great Dr. Seuss plant…it branches out 3 ways evenly and as it matures it looks like a geo-ball in winter and as it flowers…and many spring ephemerals …Trillium, jack-in-pulpits, Aquilegia …oh and that giant Impatiens bush with crazy flowers. And of course some weird topiary is a must. And Magnolia lyrata (? the huge leafed one). And you should use a stick marker…u about to pass out
So fun to be in the dreaming phase. I'm imagining a little meadow in some of those larger beds. Mystery, yes, but leading to a surprise space with some breathing room.
Maybe add a collection of Redbuds. The newer varieties are so stunning and definitely eye catching. 'Whitewater', Flame Thrower', 'Carolina Sweetheart ' 'Ruby Falls, Golden Falls. You already know all of these!! Lol. Wouldn't it be beautiful though?? You could add some sort of Evergreen screen to block those poles and little building up the hill ? DeGroots Spires maybe? So exciting!! Can't wait!!!
I would consider using a striking, unique evergreen focal to encourage people to walk in and explore the space, but that is under planted (or nearby) which drifts of something that grounds it in the surrounding spaces for cohesion
Add a large and interesting arch ( something upcycled?) at the entrance of your garden in Wallace. Maybe see if you could get a local artisan to build it..Maybe NC State students and JC Ralston could help design the arch and give some input also. Panther Creek Nursery has some large, amazing topiaries you could add (Dr Seuss 😉). Add an 'H T' block letter sculpture up the hill on the right also. Both the letters and arch could be made from recycled materials too if you wanted. Also you could have a big bug hotel like Ralston has?? Whatever you do will be magnificent I'm sure. 😊
I hope you include a Temple of Bloom in this garden. I am very surprised that you don’t have one in your home garden! It is such a beautiful shrub/tree with much seasonal interest!
You had me laughing in the beginning! The most unique plants I’ve ever seen is the Agave Americana and Western Pasqueflower, if you want to make a real Dr. Seuss garden 😂. How amazing and interesting would that be!
Weeping Blue atlas cedar for the first plant. You can contort it into something oddly spectacular. Then some taller specimens behind it to draw your eye and pull you in
This is great. I’ve always talked about making a Dr Seuss style garden. Got to include giant alliums, I submit. Fantastic points re: building maintenance practicality into the space.
HortTube man, how cool !!! Love the Dr Seuss idea. I saw a plant the other day that looked like eye balls. I thought it was so cool. And of course those Dr Seuss looking cedars. Love the idea Jim and Steph. Can’t wait to follow you along, THANK YOU BOTH 🌳🌳🌳🐕
You've got a great advantage being up on an incline if you can draw peoples eyes up with the interesting plant forms. It'll be a home run and an attention grabber for sure! ;)
...how you calculated the pathways on the ground -- on foot -- was amazing! The aerial view displayed such symmetry, it was easy for us to see your vision. I can plainly envision your different widths of paths. Can't wait for that bark to break down, JP! Oh the planting-fun that is to come! 🤗🙌🌳🌿 (from 👩🏼🌾💚 =^..^=) [MD, now 7a]
2:20 two very beefy obelisks flanking either side made out of 4x4 uprights, 10' tall, anchored to the ground, with climbing roses and clematis on each. Everyone knows an entrance to new sections often has a threshold. A little path mixed up "hedging" to create a visual funnel in would be well suited too.
Jim: Personally, I would entice the garden tour folks with free slurpies, fresh lemonade, or other icy drinks that will energize the participants. 🥤🍉. People will be grateful while dealing with the summer heat, and want to return the following year! Maybe even a sign announcing a cold refreshment?
I think that children especially need things to touch, taste and smell. Maybe an edible patch of herbs to get them interested. They are our future gardeners, we need them to keep it going. My 19 year old loves bugs, we plant all sorts of things for the pollinators.
Tons of grown plants are only workable if you own a nursery. Show people how to use natives and keep them walking to see what's around the curve. Formal designs are coming to the end of their time IMO. I'm sure Jim and Stephanie are perfect for this project.
Agree with the archway, narrow entrance creating a secret garden feel. Love this initial phase.. Will it be a woodchip path or some soft grass or fragrant carpet of goodness?
Looking forward to seeing this project evolve. Excellent information. How many inches of wood chips thick do you estimate is laid down in this new space?
That sounds so beautiful. At the Dallas Arboretum we have a playful fountain at the beginning of what they call Crape Myrtle Alley. The trees have been trained to create a natural arch as you walk under them. At the end is another playful fountain that invites kids to play. His area is wide enough to put a fountain in the middle and then people can enter around the fountain.
NC certified native garden in one spot to draw in the curious homeowners who would like to do that. Perhaps another area that brings in not often seen migratory birds for the bird watchers.
thank you i been trying to brainstorm how to go about doing this , and online pictures dont really help my over active visual mind. 😃 id love to do a sundial with a Italian cypress and with flowers or bulbs that bloom during that month or season over the clock hours. blood lilies are spectacular if you want dr Seuss looking type plants check it out. specifically Red 'African Blood Lily' Plant Bulbs
@@JimPutnam Put a few Jay Sifford-esque "arthritic" trees and conifers, with some of his signature Japanese carex "Everillo" borders. It would really pop.
We’re following along this new journey with you! Are you familiar with John Lord’s Secret Garden? He has a nursery but also an adjoining garden area with many paths. Inspirational!

Put a sign that says Horttube Garden this way ➡️ and they will come 😂😂. I love clown college design. Cannot wait to see Dr Seuss design!!
Totally agree
Jim.....don't underestimate the draw the garden space will have just because your name is associated with it - everyone loves you!!
I find your design inspiring. It feels like an experience, rather than just a display, which is the way I like to see plants.
Jim, your excitement is palpable. It’s going to be amazing garden to behold!
Painting with Jim Putnam! Jim was getting his Bob Ross on lol
@kevinkennamore6387 (...you made me laff out loud!... 😅👩🏼🌾💚 =^..^=
LOL! Going to plant some happy little trees.
😆😆😆
Exciting stuff!!! I’m looking forward to watching this garden develop!
Thank you for sharing how to lay out paths. It makes it easier to imagine how the garden beds will evolve. Lots of work ahead, but it will be worth it.
It's going to be so fun watching this garden come to life!
I really appreciate thr chance to learn how you think about garden layouts
So excited to see a raw piece of land get developed👍 I’m in Wilmington so we will be able to come see your new project 😊
I’m looking forward to seeing a Dr Seuss garden! Would you consider a water feature at the beginning of the garden or maybe the end of a path? The sight and sound of water seems to draw people in.
huge rocks with appropriate plantings. be beautiful. i love rocks, boulders and the strange plants that grow there.
It’s so exciting, this whole process. The drone footage is brilliant. I love getting to see the evolution.
So fun to be in the dreaming phase. I'm imagining a little meadow in some of those larger beds. Mystery, yes, but leading to a surprise space with some breathing room.
I love your “clown college” design. It slows you down and forces you to enjoy all that is in front of you.
such a honor. excited to watch your techniques and artistry. hope to learn a lot.
A Dr. Seuss garden definitely calls for a weeping blue atlas cedar! And a cloud pruned Carolina sapphire cypress.
i dont want to be patient get the plants and let us all come help you plant them! this space will be amazing!
Dr. Seuss sounds very interesting. I would put a giant arbor on that entrance with the Dr. Seuss style trees. Wow!!!!!🤩

Laughed at Steph’s comment about free hot dogs…. Whatever you all do will be stunning!!🌺

I just purchased one can't wait to watch this grow as I train it into a tree
I like the dead corner area with a bench and just a nice calm outer spot with the super plants. Sounds nice
Garden Whimsy! It will be lovely.

I was going to say the drone footage is fantastic

Looking forward to seeing this come together!
Fascinating project. I will watch its development eagerly.
Jim, Steph,
I have an unusual tree recommendation for this garden--the Monkey Puzzle tree (Araucaria araucana). An extremely cool & unique tree! .😊
Be sure to add spots for people to sit snd enjoy your garden.
Such fun! Such intrigue waiting to see what develops!
Can’t wait to see this develop !
So exciting! I like seeing how you have complimentary curved beds … gives me ideas on how to make my backyard feel less “boxy”

Can’t wait to see what you guys do. I know it will be educational and beautiful!
So enjoyed this!
a stone moon garden gate entrance is a good start, it makes a nod to a room

I’d certainly be drawn in by a Japanese type space, but not completely. So many possibilities.
Will the nursery provide the plants for your new garden? Plants they would like to sell?
You could have a 'HortTube' sculpture installed at the base of that Riverbirch stump. Something quirky and tall. ??
That looks like a lot of fun.
I cannot wait to see this formal Dr Seuss garden.
My first thought for what to put at the entrance to draw attention was a large blue spruce.
This is gonna be cool...Raleigh garden on steroids! Jim and steph experience will definitely shine on this project...

Put an arch way / arbor to enter your new garden area.
Agree with the archway, narrow entrance creating a secret garden feel. Love this initial phase.. Will it be a woodchip path or some soft grass or fragrant carpet of goodness?
It would b nice to see something like the tree nursery that u went to last winter out west! We will follow along with interest!
Very useful! Thank you! 👍
TY...
Will you keep it all flat or will you make berms in your design to give your garden some height to it in places
Looking forward to seeing this project evolve. Excellent information. How many inches of wood chips thick do you estimate is laid down in this new space?
Is it possible to put in a contorted maple like the one you have?
Tuck a water feature that you just get a peek of from the entrance. That and the sound of water will get people in there.
That sounds so beautiful. At the Dallas Arboretum we have a playful fountain at the beginning of what they call Crape Myrtle Alley. The trees have been trained to create a natural arch as you walk under them. At the end is another playful fountain that invites kids to play. When will you get a long handle for the landscape paint cans so you don't have to bend over?
NC certified native garden in one spot to draw in the curious homeowners who would like to do that. Perhaps another area that brings in not often seen migratory birds for the bird watchers.
For your entry, what about a large, whimsical arch?
How about a large metal arch covered in a climbing rose to delineate your entrance?
I want to come and see this. I live in Indiana but I'll come sometime 🌼
What do you recommend for metal edging?
Love the area you will be working on. What about your water source for all the plants? Hi Steph!!!
Can you tell me about the guara plant I just got. I live west of Atlanta in Georgia. Thank you.
Jim & Steph, could a water feature work in the entrance?
If you plant it, they will come!
Do I have to till before laying wood chips for my garden path or is that only if I want to amend the soil?
You almost never have to till.
A gazebo and/or places to sit.
I’m just curious, with this being a public garden , how wide are you going to make your pathways ?
Free hot dogs…😂😂😂 🌭! I’m in!
Hort Dogs 😂!
can you put in a water feature or pond
thank you i been trying to brainstorm how to go about doing this , and online pictures dont really help my over active visual mind. 😃 id love to do a sundial with a Italian cypress and with flowers or bulbs that bloom during that month or season over the clock hours. blood lilies are spectacular if you want dr Seuss looking type plants check it out. specifically Red 'African Blood Lily' Plant Bulbs
As someone already suggested it, Japanese garden might be a good idea.
It will be something like that, but without the gravel maintenance nightmare 😂
@@JimPutnam Put a few Jay Sifford-esque "arthritic" trees and conifers, with some of his signature Japanese carex "Everillo" borders. It would really pop.
Name suggestion: Wallace Woods
JStef garden coming together
If you want to stand out, offer to local modern artists a prominent place to display their art
...oh wow!...great idea!... 👌👩🏼🌾💚 =^..^=
A sculpture garden!!
What are you using to mark it?
I would like to know so I can do it on my garden. Is it spray paint
❤
💚💚💚
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
You might want to go wider than 4 ft paths. That's not very wide at all.
I'm not sad about having put 5' walkways in my parterre garden.
I can barely wait to visit this garden.
🙋
Are you and Stephany doing all of the physical labor yourselves?
specimen trees at the entry or just Do a Japanese garden
We’re following along this new journey with you!
Are you familiar with John Lord’s Secret Garden? He has a nursery but also an adjoining garden area with many paths. Inspirational!
Consider a formal rose garden spot
That’s beautiful! We have a rose garden at the Dallas Arboretum. It’s almost like its own room with climbing roses to enter. Next to it is a beautiful grassy area where it’s fun to picnic.
Get them to yours first or hire some seats for them to have a shade spot to eat in your Dr Suess garden.
