me too, I am so glad I found this as well because I always wanted to do figure skating on my roller skates. I could never find anything on it so I assumed it was impossible because it was quad wheels instead of inline. This had inspired me so much!! I think once winter is over I am going to go out and learn more!

This was very well produced and showcased the beauty and freedom that is figure skating! I want to learn so that I can be free. My soul needs it. I need to be free. On ice, on wheels, it doesn't matter. I will be free when I dance!

Whoever put this video together did a good job. It sheds a positive light on roller skating, which is a sport that desperately needs exposure to stay alive, since it doesn't have the backing that ice skating has. On another note, I have to say that both ice and roller figure skating do have some things in common and one of them being that both sports seem to draw their share of attractive young ladies☺

Been dancing my entire life and chose to learn to skate late in my life - for the past 2 years been working toward the goal of translating music into movement on quad skates. This video is inspirational and I watch it often as a reminder of what is possible if you are willing to work hard enough. Beautiful, in all regards - thanks for posting it.

Very nicely done, Julie. I was a figure skater about 35 years ago and loved it. I didn't know they still have quad skate competitions. I thought rollerblades took everything over. (I never did get comfortable on them. I need a toe stop! LOL) Thank you for posting this video. Brings back such pleasant memories.

Lisa Cardone Thank you very much!! Who was your coach? Jim and Bobbie coached me for my entire career. There still are quad competitions, however the number of contestants drops every year :(

Lisa Cardone I honestly can't remember the names even though I see their faces in my mind as clear as if they were in front of me. I skated here in NY.
What most people don't realize is how much more difficult quad skating is than inline or ice. You need soooooo much more strength to gain and maintain speed, to lift high enough to jump in spite of the heavy skates you wear and how difficult spins are on wheels turning in little circles unlike the single blade on ice.

Some of the footage looks like it was filmed in Fresno, CA . That's where the South West Regionals are held ( my region as well ) Its never too late to return to skating I retired to enter the Naval Academy after HS (84) and I'll be competing again at the beginning next season . I love the way she has continuous flow in her program She's both tech/artisicly strong and would love to see more from her

I came across this video a couple of years ago when I became a Marshall for my local roller disco and just flicking through UA-cam as you do! I think this is my all time favourite you tube videos; it's always one I go back to to view over and over. Your talent is amazing, your moves are so smooth and faultless- you can see the passion and love in your eyes. Truly incredible skater. Big credit also to the editor of the video, the music selected works so well. With the big build up to the end!
I tried figure skating a couple of times but trying to strip back to basics after self teaching yourself to skate in the first place is so difficult. Unfortunately due to a bad back I've had to hang my skates up - so disappointed with myself for not warming up/stretching/cooling down.
You and this video will forever cheer me up and show the passion I once had x

    Absolutely JAW-DROPPING!
Looking amazing in water = Easy
Looking amazing on ice = Hard
Looking AMAZING on solid=IMPOSSIBLE, yet we are watching it!
I used to skate, my very first pair being Fisher Price roller skates at age 3-4.
(anyone remember them? Get your kids on them! It's the best way to start.)
Then at age 9 I had the average quad skates.
My last were a pair of Graf skates (with GIANT leg warmers!) that I used for speed skating..age 11-12.
Nowadays, i'm very old! Haven't skated in 20yrs, yet still have dreams (literally when i'm asleep) where i'm skating....and those dreams RULE!
I recently bought some SFR Mayhem skates that i'll hopefully start using!
They should help with weightloss, as i've gained alot in 20yrs! yet still let me skate solo, or even better as part of a Roller Derby team!
I should just concentrate on being able to stand up in skates for now though!
    x

I know this comment is old, but I'll answer anyway. Yes, mostly the same, except no "toe loop" in quads only "loop" no toe stop is used it's like a salchow except on the other leg. And quad skaters can do a heel spin which is impossible on a blade. Super cool advanced move, think inverted camel on the back two wheels (the heel). Also I never see ice skaters do traveling camels, which is a popular quad skating spin.

    • @mistystaley2077

We have a mapes which is your toe loop, an inverted camel, a euler jump and a few more.

    • @TF856
      @TF856 3 роки тому +1

Yes we do and please stop insulting roller skating. We do figure skating also just like you do.
It's figure skating no matter what kind of skates you are using.
Most jumps and spins have the same names and the dances are mostly the same.
In fact both sports were controlled by the same organization for a short time many decades ago. Probably back in the twenties or thirties. But they tried to ignore roller skating and promoted ice skating which really pissed me off!
Roller skating never got the publicity or respect that it deserved!
About a half a dozen world famous ice skater started out on roller skates and had to switch sports because they wanted to be in the Olympics.
There's a video of Tara lipinski on UA-cam in a competition on roller skates.
I've seen hundreds of examples of ice skaters Brown beating roller skaters like they're better in some way. As if roller skaters were the embarrassing country cousin to ice skaters that they wished didn't exist.
Almost as bad as people knowing about ice figure skating and have no clue whatsoever about roller figure skating.
People act totally shocked to find out that everything that can be done on ice skates can be done on roller skates also, and has probably been done earlier.
I recently read that ice skaters are now doing quad jumps and roller skaters were doing that back in the '70s.
There are some roller figure skating videos on UA-cam if you look under men's or women's senior division freestyle or pairs.
You might even be able to find some videos clips that were televised on wide World of sports.

Roller skating is a tough sport as far as rinks closing, having to commute, etc... In my competitive career FOUR of my rinks were closed. If you truly love the sport, there is always a way to make it work... I started more cross training, running through entire routines off skates, bought outdoor wheels to switch out and practice in my garage and drive way, LOTS of visualization and developing mental strength, and lived with my coaches on the weekends and whenever I wasn't in school or working. I know, it sounds crazy, but I wouldn't trade those years for anything in the world and it was all worth it in the end. I hope you are able to keep your dream going!!!!

    • @wildfyah
      @wildfyah 9 років тому

MissJulieBall It's true. We don't have any rinks in Barbados so I'm hunting around for decent places to practice. I only started skating again recently. Unfortunately for me, it's hard to find a level surface outdoors so I'm learning the hard way lol. I've wanted to skate a long time ago..I'm 27 and only now getting around to it..*sigh* better late than never I guess.

There are many different styles of roller skating popular today, and each of these styles puts very specific and different demands on their skates. For instance, speed roller skates are designed to travel fast in a straight line, but they would be absolutely hopeless for playing rink hockey, where manoeuvrability is far more important than top speed. Jam skaters (break dancing on wheels) want a low cut boot so they can bend their ankles, however an artistic skater trying to land a Triple Axel on a jam skate would soon be paying a visit to the Accident and Emergency ward at the local hospital.
So before you buy your roller skates, you should take some time to decide what you want to do on them. Will you skate indoors, outdoors, or both? Do you want to enter competitions on your roller skates, dance, or just potter around the local park once in a while? What facilities are there to skate in your local area? The answers to these questions and many others will point you in the right direction when it comes to choosing your roller skates, and perhaps save you making expensive mistakes early on.

I am learning the half mapes and full mapes at the moment. Is a double makes double the rotation?

Absolutely staggering. Be inspired by all those ice skaters. I don't see how you can't do what they do but on dry land!

I know its been 7 months since you posted this comment but I couldn't help but answer your question. From what I can tell from a few minutes of online research is that by figures you mean compulsory figures? From what I have read in the few minutes in figures in ice skating there is no predetermined line and you make your own and then follow it. It rollerskating there is a line painted on the floor which you must follow. So perhaps that is what you meant?
