This arc (and this scene in particular) is an interesting reversal of First Contact, where it was Picard who acted way too emotional when they were stranded in a different time after an encounter with the Borg, and the Queen threatened their ship. Now he's the one who's experienced with all this song and dance and he basically tells Rios "that's how these things go, better get used to it".

Star Trek from it's inception could be said as having an agenda. But tbh, I don't think it's that bad( it's a globalist one). Once one becomes aware of an agenda, one can choose to either agree with it ...or go the opposite way ( which may seem like a freedom of choice but in reality is just another agenda that's been indoctrinated since birth.). Everything is and has always been part of an agenda whether one is aware of it or not.

Raffi is definitely too emotional, but she's also right - Q does all this stuff, but it's only because Picard engages with him. Arguing with Q does nothing at all, the man can literally go back in time and alter history so it turns out the way he WANTS it to. He is Immortal, close to unkillable and is effectively a God. Picard has known since he met Q the only way to deal with Q is to play his game and beat him at it-which he has done, more than once, which is why Q is so interested in him. Suggesting that you should refuse to play the game at all...?
Q could blow up history easily, the Confederation is nothing compared to some potential Timelines. Like the one where the Borg Assimilate the entire Federation, for instance... Picard is more sick and tired than anyone of Q's games, but he also knows that he has no other choices here. Raffi is going off on Picard because Elnor died, mind, not because she is unaware of just what Q is capable of.
Also, bear in mind that Q is an adult who is well aware of what he's doing. He's helped as much as he's hindered-it's because of him the Federation became of the Borg's existence a long time before the Borg actually reached their part of the Galaxy, just for example. He knows Picard can get it done, so he gives him hints and the occasional tip and leaves him to work out the rest. Which, again, he always does.
Except this time? It's not so clear if everyone will make it out alive...

I must respectfully disagree, though of course this is very subjective. But I think there are objective reasons why this, like most of 2x03, was a terrible scene.
    1) Raffi was tipped over the edge into a meltdown because of Elnor's death. But however close she may have been to him, she is a senior Starfleet officer, commanding her own vessel. There is no way she would have reacted this way, unless she was generally an unprofessional officer. For comparison, Janeway and Sisko also presided over operations wherein subordinates they considered family were killed. But they nonetheless maintained that stoic professionalism until the operation was over. So this seems to be poor writing.
    2) In her meltdown, she seems to have abandoned any sort of rationality. Even if one could allow her character some leeway in how a Starfleet officer would plausibly process what happened (there were times when even Janeway or Sisko slightly faltered), it is not at all believable that anyone with even the slightest familiarity with the history between Q and Picard could put any blame on Picard himself, who has been nothing but a hamster in a cage for Q. Yet she portrays it as if he is in on the 'games'. They wrote pure irrationality into her character here.
So no, this scene was horribly written, though I suppose the actor did a good job portraying what the writers wanted (a hysterical person behaving irrationally during a meltdown), misguided as it may have been.

    • @Leto2ndAtreides

Raffi seems to be an odd sort of emotional character that some writer wanted to put in.
Overall, the character of ST: Picard just isn't the same as Star Trek of old.
To begin with, the first season had more Star Wars vibes.
Why you'd do a continuation of Picard's story with that kind of space adventure is beyond me - you're giving up ties to what people like seeing with him as the main character.

This is definitely one of Raffi's worse scenes. It is just another iteration of the nonsensical scene from season one where she rants at Picard while he is attempting to recruit her, which was clearly a mistake if she is still being such a buffoon. Of course, Picard's lack of a strong response to such absurd actions merely makes him look even weaker than he did already, so perhaps it is an even worse scene for him.

Yeah I feel like Picard is being written more like how he used to be. He doesn't apologise to Raffi because her argument is not valid. He doesn't blow up at her about it because she is clearly broken up about Elnor and not thinking rationally.
If Picard was gung-ho about outwitting Q then she would have an argument but Picard has made it abundantly clear that he wants nothing to do with Q. I agree, I don't think it's great writing for her to not understand that Picard never asked for Q to take a special interest in him.

@@TheNoybusiness Uh, I think it's great writing because there's history between her and Picard. It's not just Q. It's Admiral Picard walking into Starfleet after the attack on Mars, threatening to resign if he didn't get his own way and getting his bluff called -- without a moments thought about what the consequences would be for Raffi or anyone else. It's a man she considered a mentor and friend ghosting her ass for fifteen years, until he wanted something from her. And just as she's getting her life back together, the young man she considers as close to her son as she's ever going to get is DEAD -- because they got dragged back into Jean-Luc Picard's personal drama. And he just condescendingly dismisses her as "too emotional" and walks away.

@@CRanapia fair enough. But in Star Trek IV (aka 'the funny one'), we didn't have Uhura having an emotional blast at Kirk, storming off and then Kirk saying 'she's emotional' and Chekov saying 'I'll go with her' while the crew were busy going back in time to fix a historical event to correct the future.
And the film is all the better for it. IMHO.

@@JGlennFL I think what is being forgotten here is the consequences, intended or otherwise, of technology and the potential impact it has on people. That is at the heart of Trek from ToS, TNG, DS9, V and their comics, cartoons, books etc. Technology isn't necessarily bad in and of itself. Rather it is who, to do what, and how the technology is used.
