    What's up dog? Today we are gonna talk about the ghetto- “I’m Broke as ” Aquarium. We are gonna talk about ghetto aquariums, we are gonna talk about ghetto substrate, we are gonna talk about ghetto gravel and ghetto filtration and ghetto lighting. The ghetto aquarium can be found. You just have to look for it. I would check craigslist, scout around at trash day, and yard sales. If you find a cracked aquarium you can ghetto fix it with covering an entire piece of glass or plastic with silicone and mash it over the crack of the aquarium. This works and you can see how I did it back in the day… People some how dont remember that plants need to eat- when farmers plant corn do they plant it in rocks? Heck no. They plant it it dirt. and I've got a ghetto way to add dirt to your aquarium. take dirt right out of your back yard. Yep. Take some of your moms used Lasagna tin foil and heat it in the oven. You are gonna wanna bake it for 350 degrees for like 15-20 minutes. Let it cool- this should anything that might be in it. Want some cheap gravel? I've got two ghetto options. You can use pool filter sand. yep a 50 lb bag of it is 10$ yep or you can use pebbles from home depot. I am going to use pebbles because this is the ghetto aquarium and I am going to add some ghetto fish...... I am sick of typing, youtube wants you to type a long description, but I hate typing which is why I make videos… so watch the video and drop me a comment on YOUR favorite Ghetto Aquarium project or tip.Planted Tanks shouldn't be difficult. My goal is to make the planted aquarium hobby easy. "Planted Tanks Made Easy" Dustin's Fish Tanks. TANK ON!

    my ghetto "aquarium" was a clear plastic tote. i used shale from my driveway and a window plant my mom had growing in a vase. my filter was a plastic soda bottle full of pillow stuffing and more gravel hooked onto an air pump. i didn't have a light so i just sat in near the window. i kept 2 war mouth bluegill fish. there names where betty and bobby bluegill. it was probably about 20 gallons or so

    Baking dirt sterilizes it. The siphon is an awesome idea. 20 years of keeping fish and that's the first I've seen that trick.

    • @MissTrixie29
      @MissTrixie29 8 років тому +4

      As long as it can't siphon up the small fish it's a great idea.

    • @taegra
      @taegra 7 років тому +12

      I know this comment is old but sterilizing the dirt is an important step, you don't want any parasites or harmful/foreign bacteria in your substrate. The plants will do fine and get their nutrient boost once the fish are added. Plants that are newly transferred don't need food right away anyway.

    back in the day i used an old 20 gallon i got for free. went to the pond and caught 4 1/2 in bass and 2 1 inch long bluegill. I went to the pond everyday and caught baby mosquitofish to feed the bass and bluegill. they also were fed standard flakes.Also i would grab plants from the pond (myriophyllum) and float them. they never grew because i had no idea what i was doing but the fish ate the plants. and hid in them

    I have a betta in a 5 gallon tank. Don't really need a heater since we're in Florida but overnight it gets a bit cool. Didn't want to get a heater for such a small tank so at night I cover the tank with a heavy towel and heat one of those gel packs you use for sore muscles and lie it on the airline tubing that leads to the airstone in the tank. Keeps the temp between 77-78 all night. That's my ghetto setup, lol.

    My most ghetto thing was, when the office fish tank had to be broken down b/c a terrible case of blue green algae stunk so bad people were throwing up - we put the fish in an "emergency tank" made from a large clear plastic cheese puff container & I built a temporary filter w/ a powerhead, a plastic bottle, filter floss, activated charcoal & used airline tubing to carry the water up thru the filter & back down into the "tank" :)

    nice video, not everyone has spare money. The most ghetto thing i did was when i was 15 years of age now 37 i was hosting a kick back and about 1 hour before the party i noticed my one and only fish was dead since i didn't have the time to go out and get one i decided to put a piece of clear tape on him and paste him to the tank then refilling with water....Everyone one like my tank until a girl stared at it long enough to realize the fish was not moving ...She yelled out hey the fish is not moving the jig was up i had to explain that it was being held up with a piece of tape.

    I had a friend who made a ghetto aquarium back in the late 70s in Tennessee. The water was dirty and the plants and whatever hadn't been sterilized. He said he was gonna put fish in it and I couldn't help but laugh.
    The next day I see him and he's asking me to come look at his fish.
    I swear to you…a 20 gallon aquarium with a largemouth bass in it that weighed 4 pounds.
    I still laugh to this day.

      Thanks, too many people want you to make it look like the magazines. Real world doesn't need all of that. The ancient Greeks wrote about keeping fish in containers, and they sure didn't have the same products we do. Yes, they did kill fish. And honestly, I'd rather do my best with what's available, then be apologetic about not being able to afford whatever. Is it perfect? No, but Natural environments are pretty complicated and kill fish all the time. It's just you grow attached to your pets and feel crummy for hurting them. Did I learn how to do a better job, is my opinion.
      If you don't like it, don't keep fish. It's a free world.

    I found a 100 lb bag of pool filter sand at Home Depot last night for around $8. This will help out with my MTS problem. Great vid. I have found tons of ghetto filter ideas like using a water bottle like the one you used to make the siphon, cut up drinking straws and an air hose and pump for a wet dry filter.

    I love your video. It all goes to show that you can find cheap ways to do this hobby. As an old guy who is not well off it is important to find ways to do the hobby without spending a fortune. Between bargain shopping and DIY projects, it is amazing how cheap you can obtain and set up tanks. About a week ago I got a 20-gallon high tank someone only a few miles away was giving away for free. Often when a tank has a crack in it or leaks you can get the tank for a song.

    Not really a ghetto tank here... Well maybe. But I wanted to keep my tank natural.. so I got left over pebbles from my old tank, some seashells and river logs. I also got a river plant from said river, including a patch of dirt keeping the plant roots safe. And placed everything in my tank. I didn't boil or bake none of the dirt or pebbles.. or logs?. But my fish are extremely happy and healthy..almost 2 years with them now.. and some have even had babies. So.. maybe it's a bet on whether you have to bake dirt?

    I used to use Jungle Val from the lakes up in Northern Canada. I noticed little white worms squiggling around the tank after a while. I would suggest getting the plants from an area that has winter time, but harvest the plants in the late spring instead of late summer like I did. This will prevent a lot of worms from being in the plants. Also, get the smaller plants that are just starting instead of the larger ones. Jungle Val grows like crazy, so it shouldn't be long before those little plants grow up. I would recommend the bleach trick too, but make sure you wash the bleach off really good before putting them in the aquarium.

    The desk lamps/lights are the BEST tip of all. I had a super heavily planted tank, only a 2.5 for my betta, only did a scater siphoning because there was more snail than sand. But oh my god, those cheap lights with a good bulb you can get at the grocery store? perfect. I was having to prune back plants every week. If not for a heater mishap, I'd still have that thriving little tank.

    Hi,We are using polyester stuffed animal filling in our canister filter. It does the job and saves us a fortune on prefab filters. We also use nylon stockings for holding charcoal and ammonia chips. I soak the ammonia chips in salt water to extend and reuse them. We use different sponges that we got on clearance from filters that were on sale.

    My "Ghetto" tank that I just set up last weekend was a free 30 gallon tank with fluorescent light and hood (plus a spare bulb), an Optima air pump, Aqua Clear 200 filter with two fresh carbon inserts, a net and some additional air tubes, an air stone and air tube holders, etc. that I got all for free from someone who put it out for the taking! I added some gravel and a heater from another tank and put some of the accessories to use in another (a 35 gallon tank with incandescent lighting and stand that I got for $50) and a 20 gallon tank with fluorescent lighting, filter, etc. that I picked up for $20 years ago. I did buy new some items over the years (including a $50 stand, but by and large the three tanks probably cost little more than one new $35 gallon kit from the typical pet store. I got most of the fish on sale, as I'm still cycling the tank and only want to add a few at a time, picking from whatever's on sale for a given week. I even have a few more tanks and lighting sets that I picked up from yard sales or give aways but it's a bit overkill to get them all running at once.

I made a makeshift divider to use if I needed to take more than one betta to get a checkup. what I did was I went to Michaels and bought paper clips and a couple plastic grids used for sewing etc. then I went home measured my tank dimensions cut the grid to fit exactly hooked the paper clips to each top corner to keep it in place and hooked them around the vent openings in the critter keeper. the only thing I need now is the silicone glue and that my friends is how you make a ghetto tank divider lol

    I made a siphon similar to this but I didn't use a hose fitting, all i did was get a bottle with an opening that the hose end without a fitting would fit into as tightly as possible and then wrapped duct tape around to hold them together, although a tip I will give for anyone who wants to make one is find a bottle with thick plastic unlike the one Dustin used. I still use the one i made because it has a smaller opening than most of the commercial ones which is good for smaller tanks. I used a vanilla essence bottle which I had to soak for awhile and clean it thoroughly but was worth it because it works great.

    Love this! I actually planned on grabbing some plants from a local pond just out of curiosity. I've been trying out different substrate combinations for the last couple of years. One brand of organic soil didn't need ANY water changes due to tannins, this other brand has been staining since last July and doesn't show any sign of stopping. Play sand was too dense and killed some plants, aquarium sand is slightly less course and has given me greater success. My crypts and swords are gorgeous but I've never had any success with stem plants. I can't afford to buy plants that just disintegrate, so I figured I'd grab those pond plants and see how they go :) I love your vid! Subbed

    Ghetto filtration - Undergravel filters - You need: Egg crate light panels, nylon screen, 1 inch PVC pipe, a ball point pin - old school with the cap style, marbles, glue, and a power head. Get the egg crate lighting covers from THD/Lowes. Listed as "White Egg Crate Styrene Lighting Panel" at The Home Depot. You know, like the ones in office buildings or schools that are in the ceiling over the lights. Lay a layer of nylon screen over the bottom of the tank. Not metal screen as it oxidizes/rusts. This protects the glass from the next step. Cut the egg crate to size, and cut out some squares that will allow the PVC pipe to fit through it in the back of the tank. Glue marbles into the squares of the crate at intervals to make a support base. Make sure you do the corners, middle, etc. The more marbles you use, the less pressure on the glass. Measure the PVC to fit from the bottom of the tank to the top WITH the powerhead in place. This is your lift tube. Drill a hole across the tube at the bottom. This should be less than a 1/2 marble length from the bottom. Discard the ink cartridge from your pen and put it through the hole. The prevents the tube from pulling out of the crate when installed. Cut some notches in the bottom of the pipe for inflow. Insert the tube in the crating so you can insert it marbles down. Now you have a gap under the crate for water flow with a lift tube. Now put another piece of nylon screen on the crate top. This prevents your substrate from getting into the crate. Add gravel. If you have digging fish like most cichlids, put another piece of screen on your first layer of substrate. Then put in more substrate. They cannot move the gravel under the screen. That trick will also work with dirt and a gravel. Roots can grow through the screen.

    I've been a long time supporter and subscriber and have learned a lot and I find you entertaining. However, as an African-American I am offended by your use of the word "Ghetto" and my sense of offense is compounded when I hear you use it over, and over, and over. Let's not kid ourselves, "Ghetto" is, and has always been, a pejorative term for all things "Black". You present yourself as the "cool" White guy who loves Wu Tang, and you break into a Rap every now and then to show your familiarity with Black culture, but none of that gives you some sort a "pass". However you may try to spin it, a White person calling anything "Ghetto" is at its heart racist and highly offensive to many African Americans. In these tense racial times this is not something we need. You're a smart man. I'm sure you can find a word for doing things on the cheap other than "Ghetto". Try looking for that word.

I think many of the viewer and the 310 people who have liked this video got that it was a joke. CLEARLY this video has nothing to do with actual Ghettos or hard times people -black or white- have faced, in ghettos. It was meant light heatedly and I appreciate your approach to the comment. I don't think a white person calling anything ghetto is racist....at least it certainly wasn't meant to be. again, I am sorry if I offended you or anyone else as a white dude from northern Ohio using the word ghetto

      94110mission "A white person calling anything GHETTO is at his heart racist"........? that makes no sense at all. Racism means that you think a particular race is superior to another. So what you are saying is white people should not use the word 'gehtto', or else they are racist? First off its racist to say 'white people' specifically are not allowed to say the word ghetto while other 'races' are allowed to, and second, I live in the most multi cultural city on earth, i'm not racist and I say ghetto all the fucking time. This video was funny and is talking about how to set up a cheap aquarium, just enjoy the video and stop LOOKING for shit to be offended by.
