How to setup a tropical fish community aquarium.

- It has been a while since I set up a bigger aquarium for a mixed community fish tank, so I thought we should show a set up on the larger side of aquariums rather than the smaller aquariums you are used to seeing on the channel. This is the start of getting a few larger aquariums aquascaped on the channel, so watch this space!
Drop into the comments to give us a suggestion on what fish should be next to enter the community.

Kuhli loaches for the win. A big group of noodles
@@solsticelacer 50+ group 👀😂
Noodle army!!!!!!!
Kuhlis are so great it would be crazy breeding tank with 50+ lol. I have 10 in my 20G long (76 x 33cm) tank along with; 3 Vampire shrimp, 3 Peacock gudgeons, 7 Otocinclus, 12 Pseudomugil luminatus, and a colony of yellow back neocaridina. The kuhlis are so active all times of the day and they barely use up any bioload since they’re bottom of the food chain.
Kuhli loaches and Hillstream loaches would look great. Love the new scape. I really like the big stones.
Facts🙂↕️😤
Almost 40 minute video from Fish Shop Matt…. It’s a good day. I already know it’s gonna be a good one!
Thank you so much!!! 💜
I was so very happy to have my coffee and a video from Matt this morning lol
@@FishShopMattI don't see the pinned comment but galaxy rasbora are a must imho
Love how David Attenborough mode is activated when the lights are on near the end ahah
Oooh hillstream loaches. It’s a stream scape after all
Which hillstream loach do you fancy? Reticulated (most common in the hobby) red tail, Vietnam tiger, Blue fin, Gold Ring, Borneo, bloody Mary, abditus, or one of the other 200 or so species?
@@Chompchompyerded I suspect it will come down to whichever species Matt can obtain, which, yes, will probably be reticulated.
Held my breath when you put ROCK in😊
You mentioned a small gourami. I’d go with honey gourami. They are the funniest little fish, pretty and social and very curious. I have six of them in a 90 gallon community tank with all nano fish so they are my “centerpiece fish” and they really are fun to watch.
I'm partial to hillstream loaches and I think they'd appreciate all those rounded rocks. I also really like honey gouramis because I have had one named Old Gregg in my community tank for over a year and a half and he is terrific. Looking good!
It's perfect for hillstream loaches. It will also be a perfect spawning and breeding ground for making baby hillstream loaches. The eggs and babies will go down between those rocks and no other fish will be able to get to them.
I was holding my breath watching the placement of those boulders 😅
I'd love to see some gouramis!! They feel really underappreciated as well, it'd be fun to make this an underloved species tank
That's a good shout! I definitely agree they're underappreciated.
I literally held my breath while you put the first boulder in and got it positioned! Well done! I'm new to your channel, so I've never seen that filter before, and it's so good! I love the scape! :)
you and me both...that was scarry! 🤣
Hahaha I was holding my breath too! 🤣
Yes, khuli loaches. I love them calm and bottom swimming fish.
Heart in my mouth when you put the first big rock in... Be my luck it toppled as I put the next one in. Well done. Simple but effective!
Thank you!
What I like best about this video Matt is that it’s easy for anyone to do themselves. Nice one.
Thank you that's great to hear that!
Hillstream Loaches will like the smooth rocks 👍
And they will breed in them too. Nothing cuter than baby hillstream loaches!
@Chompchompyerded agreed! They are my favorite to watch when they race around the aquarium. I have a two in my 29 gallon named Speed Racer and Wiggles ❤
Hillstream loaches would look so good on the rocks.
The tank looks great , those boulders are gorgeous,
That is the most amazing filter I have ever seen with all the various uses (options) it has to it. What a great idea, they really re-invented the filter there. Bravo!
Agree, very tempted to go for one of these tanks because of the filter.
You can buy these filters separately in 3 different sizes. Oase Bioplus.
Yep killer filter
Yeah it's a great filter as has been said it's an oase BioPlus.
I have a big rock like these in my garden I'm literally going to strip and redo my tank tomorrow because of this Scape I love it. Thanks for the inspo Matt! X
At home with a broken leg, so a nice long video is a tonic, plus some inspiration for a tank we have empty waiting to be scaped.
GET WELL SOON ! 🤗
I hope your leg heals soon! 💜
With those big rocks hill stream loaches would be amazing
Kuhli Loaches would LOVE all that cover to live in. An awesome fish, got to be the noodles!
Gold and checker barbs were such a good choice! I've owned both and they're amazing and so nice
One of the first tropical fish I kept with my father was Yoyo loaches, I haven't seen them for years but they are super active and fun to watch.
Matt just love your enthusiasm and creativity and teachings
One of your best scapes yet Matt. Looking fantastic
Hatchet fish would be a nice addition and not seen very often because many people don't use lids. But you have that great lid, so now's your chance to get hatchet fish.
Watch this space I've got plans if I can find some hatchets locally.
Chocolate (samurai) gourami next! They are so cute 🙏
Vaillanti have been easier to keep in my experience than the standard chocolate gourami, this is a firm agree though
Yeah definitely! Bit of gourami love for sure
Love music that played while climatizing fish
Melon barbs! I would also love to see a Rasbora added and otos
Hill stream loaches would do well in this set-up Matt. Also a couple of female powder blue gouramis would look fabulous with the other coloured fish you have.
A group of kuhli loaches for the win mini (faux) eels are always fun. Especially if you can get the different colors.
Purple fin loach or Annie’s flame goby would be amazing little pops of colour when you see them 😍👌
Oooo if I can get those gobies I would be happy!
Absolutely gorgeous, i think some Odessa Barbs would pop so well in there❤
Beautiful scape Matt! I appreciate your approach and visual balance for this setup. Amazing how the simple rock foundation became elegant with the addition of anubias and a few sticks. Definitely takes a good eye to do what you do.
As a contrast of scale to the big rocks, it would be cool to see some Pygmy Corydoras, who would probably breed all over that tank.
Thank you for the long form videos!! You can’t get enough info in 60 seconds. Knowledge is more valuable than gold!!
Glad you like them!
That was fun and I will admit I held my breath when the first big cobble was going in. I think some type of loach would be great and I do love a gourami, but whatever is decided it will be lovely.
Glad you enjoyed it, I held my breath too!
when the music dropped at 14:55 i was like yeeeea hes MDs friend forreal 😆 the music slaps👌🏾💜
Danio zebra fish . Our fast and zippy and they love to swim in groups. They’re not afraid and hiding behind the plants all the time when I was a child they were very popular fish, but I rarely see them anymore.
Would love to see a small apistograma species , hillstream loaches and possibly halfbeaks.
Something I have not seen many videos of, or often seen featured in aquariums much lately? Upside Down Catfish! I think they are temperature and PH compatible with these fish. I group of them would be very cool in this tank!
They would work well! The problem is a lot of hybrids end up on the hobby from synodontis species and most are not as friendly as the true upside downs.
Hi Matt. Brilliant tank. Anubias are my favourite plants.
Kuhli loaches and 3 spot gouramis would be great. Also how about my favourite fish , keyhole cichlids, they would make a fantastic focal fish. They really are a gentle fish and such characters. Can’t wait for the next episode.
Great suggestion!
hillstream loaches would love the rocks!
In a few months adding a group of Hillstream loaches to comb over those rocks are a must. A group of Sparkling gourami would be a nice contrast to the barbs.
A batch of rocks like that will have those hillstream loaches breeding in no time!
Hillstream loaches sound great 😊
When I was in high school I had a large tank all the different Tetras. It did great except the original Neons were too small and vanished in the first day thanks to the Bleeding heart Tetras. I got a larger variety of Neons and then all the fish live together perfectly well after that.
Let me know which fish would be a cool addition. I am thinking Kuhli loaches, Hillstream Loaches maybe a smaller Rainbowfish. I cannot decide, but luckily I have you guys and girls.
Im A Cory and other small catfish fan. maybe some Skunk Corys.
Hillstream!
Glowlight rasbora and khuli loaches
Hillstream loaches are one of my absolute favorites. There's many varieties to choose from and the way they interact within the aquarium is so neat to watch. Obviously that's my vote.
Hill stream loaches are cute 🎖️
Really awesome hardscape! That filter is cool too
Funny how your Gold Barbs are the bravest. Mine are fully grown so quite chunky yet, they're the biggest scaredy cats in the whole tank! Always quick to hide away at the slightest movement yet, the Cherry Barbs, Rasbora's and Cardinals couldn't give a monkeys 😂
I would like to see a group of pygmy hatchet fish to populate the upper regions of the tank. You already have a lid on the tank so no worries when/if they jump a bit... 😁😁😁
I agree that hatchet fish would look great in the upper section and you do have a nice lid already.
Wow, you know you're in the hobby when watching someone unbox and aquarium is like some visceral experience compelling you to figure out how you can justify getting one too, haha. Phew, I need some time to recover.
I really some aspects of the tank's design. The corner filter with a hidden header is an awesome idea and something I tried finding in the past, but could only find it on canister filters.
That new tank feeling ❤
Kuhli loaches! They would be a nice addition as well for being shy too
Love the loach idea
Awesome video, Matt. Can't wait to see how everything turns out
Really enjoyed this video! At first I was thinking the choice to use only Anubias would look kinda plain...but WOW! It looks great, especially with those large round rocks! I think some red barbs would really pop!
So glad you went barbs first. I have just set up a 55gal temperate barb tank with Panda Garra on clean up duties, got to love the barbs :-)
That's a great scape Matt, I've got a 130 tall tank that I'm looking to scape and put in the unused fireplace. Everything I think I've got it planned out I see one of your vids and change my mind. Great work 👏
hillstream loaches to keep the rocks in check and some barilioides barbs, good job so far
I know your the expert, but remember be careful with heat from the radiator in winter, could cause some issues 😎 but I know you already know that, so this message is more for anyone else who is watching 👍
Yeah that heater will be turned off but it's a great point to make that I actually didn't talk about!
Honey Gourami. I love the natural coloured ones 🙂
I have multiple types of barbs in with dalmation mollies and it is a FANTASTIC tank
What a great setup! I love all the Anubias; definitely doesn't need more light, possibly even less. 😅
The barbs are a great choice. Kuhli loaches and hillstream loaches have already been suggested, but towards the water surface maybe a slightly bigger shoal of Rasboras or Danios, if you keep the Asian theme going.
I totally agree!
I like the concept of staying with Asian fishes in this community tank. I was thinking a couple honey or dwarf gourami would be nice. Great idea for a video, getting community involvement.
Thank you, great idea!
I wouldn't mind looking at that in my living room! Very nice. Big fan of kuhli loaches, you can never have enough of those. But maybe Borneo loaches? And a group of gobis could also quite happily live there I think
Borneo loaches are members of the same family as hillstream loaches, and live in the water in much the same way. Either would be quite fine in this tank. Kuhli loaches seem to be a fan favourite here, and in fact I put both kuhli loaches and hillstream loaches (any sucky loach will do) in my list. We will probably never see the kuhli loaches, since they'll just hide all day between the rocks, and come out at night when Matt's gone to bed. He'll think they've all died until he takes the aquarium apart, at which time he'll find a noodle pile under the rocks.
Yeah I think Kuhli are a big favourite so far!
@@FishShopMatt It will be a good teaching moment to show people what to do so that they can see their aquarium noodles on rare occasions! Sub-substrate caves which are fitted next to the glass are one of many good solutions. Leaving a tank un-scaped and bare is another, bordering on criminal, way of doing it.
i think some butterfly fish would be cool. or half beaks. especially having the lid on there. also think the scape is perfect for some hillstream loaches. cool scape btw. 🔥
I think so too!
My word you put a lot of faith into the strength of that glass. I know it’s quality and there’s foam offcuts under the edges of the rocks but I’d have to had sat them on a good slab of foam for peace of mind. Cool setup man. It does look like quality gear. Gday from Aus.
Some Snakeskin or Rhombo Barbs would be cool with there patterns
Maybe some panda garra
Celestial Pearl Danios
I love the scape too.
☘️🌱🪴🌿☘️🌱🪴🌿Plants look great :)
Gouramis are my favorites! They get my vote.
I love the hardscape river stones like this. Looks realistic. i think adding a large Trident Java fern as center piece would be nice. But this is a really nice set up!
I think for other stocking hovering loaches or stiphodon gobies sp. would be very cute
Stiphodon would be awesome!
I love the selection of all anubias. It looks really nice.
New to ur channel, found you while set up ponds... I used to work in the aquatics industry for 10 years keeping all sorts of fish, but havent had a tank for 13nyrs, u setting this lovely aquarium up is wetting my appertite, pardon the pun! Lobe checker barbs great choice... look forward to.seeing this muture..
when you mentioned the sturdy lid, my first thought was 'it's cat-safe' 🙂
Edit:
hillstream loaches might be a good addition given the huge amount of rock surface in there.
That's a great point loads of customers were always looking for cat safe lids
Love the set up mate. Super nice tank kit. Unfortunately they go for $1500 here in Australia !! Crazy
Kuhli loaches !!! A big group. I’d love to see it. It’s such a lovely tank !
I'd love to see them too. That's exactly the problem though. They'll find lots of hidie holes in between those rocks, and you'll never see them again unless you go in there after dark.
Gold wonder killifish or any killifish would look great in the open top area
I saw some wild panchax the other day that were stunning!
Hi Matt from Western Australia, have been watching you and Mark for months now and appreciate your videos emensly, as a newbie (may this year) I am on a crash course to knowledge about tropical fish, in fact I scored,my second 5 foot tank this week so I will soon gave 2x 5
(560 litre and 308 litres) footers and a 38 litre tank in my bedroom keeping me company oh the joys of being a single 64 year old my place my rules lol
My suggestion for a second lot of fish for the tank is
Pearl or lace Gourmi
Congo Tetras
Glass bloodfin Tetras
Harlequin rasbora
Bristlenose Catfish
Odessa barbs
Black Phantom Tetras
Neon Tetras
That should give you a few ideas maybe
I am running about 15 species in my 560 litre community tank with a heap(maybe 50) of Sailfin Dalmatian Mollies fry swimming in with the adults
In my 38 litre tank I have another 50ish young Mollies as well
They need re homing asap
Thankyou for all the work and interest you put into your videos it makes it easier to understand what is involved in tropical fish keeping and the realisation that to do so properly takes some effort!
Tony from Western Australia 🇦🇺
Thank you so much for your comment Tony. Comments like yours make it all the more worthwhile.
Loving your suggestions and I have a few future scapes with some of the fish in mind so watch this space.
@@FishShopMatt no problems Matt, credit where credit is due,
Tony
Such an amazing tank! One of my favourites already. ❤
Great setup man! Love the boulders! I collected a good size one a while ago. I think its time i use it.
Beautiful set up, I'd love to see some kuhli loaches in there.
Amazing scape Matt, I always look forward to your videos and any knowledge you have to share.
lovely tank! i'd love to see you do something with sparkling gouramis... or maybe with lampeye killis!
Love the pebble/anubias combo in tanks.
The flamingo egg cup strikes again aswell 😂
If you get kuhli loaches you will need about 50 if you want to see 1 😂 group of hillstream loaches would look cool.
Great vid as always FSM 😜✌️💜
Yeah agreed a bag of Kuhli is definitely needed
❤❤❤ this tank needs shrimpies and snails, don't you think ?
Love your videos ❤❤❤
YES ! no tank is truly complete without them, I feel
Love those Oase Styleline aquariums i have the Styleline 85 and it's a great small tank upgrade the filter with some bio media works great
Agreed it's a great tank!
Nice setup and great video Matt! 😊
I'd really like to see you do a tank with Odessa Barbs! 🙏
Gourami and cherry bards would look nice too
Matt I really like this tank.
Love love landscaping
5 Banded Barbs. Very peaceful and stunningly beautiful. Adolfo Corys too.
I wanted five banded and no one had them. I will keep a look out.
Having the light that close to the water freaks me out…. Hope the waterproofing holds up. Lovely set up! ❤️🇦🇺
They are really well sealed so I have no worries about it.
Nice video. I'm getting fired up to get back into the hobby. 😊
Love ❤ the way you placed the 3rd large boulder. The placement will prevent the 1st boulder from shifting & mistakenly shattering the tank.
Fish suggestions: African silver clipper barbs, zebra danios, tetras (neon, green & cardinals) Enders livebearers. ❤😊
I really like this scape. Rummy nose barbs have become one of my favourites. Such intense red and blue colouration, and the sparring between males is so active but non aggressive. I think the tank would benefit from their addition.
I have never heard of the rummy nose barb. I assumed at first you were speaking of the runny nose tetra. Looked it up and found that it is a native of Burma. It is listed as endangered, so unless tank raised and not wild, I would be hesitant to purchase.
@@gillianmiller9710 Based on the availability and pricing here in Canada, and in the US, I would think they are likely being bred in SE Asia.
I love this scape! The Anubias were the perfect choice. Golden Honey Gouramis would look amazing.
Nannostomus Mortenthaleri or some red kind of it will pop in here!
Pleeeeeaaaase stick to calling it the fish garage, genuinely love it, absolutely no pretence at all, seems 100% fish shop Matt!
Agreed I didn't like the fish garage at the start but it has grown on me
