- THE owner of a popular Leicester fish and chip shop has spoken out about the current cost crisis, which is being shouldered as a result of the conflict in war-torn Ukraine.
The surging price of fish and sunflower oil, have caused the ‘worst crisis’ in the trade’s long history, it was claimed yesterday, with a combination of inflationary pressures meaning that most chip shops will be unable to serve a ‘cheap’ meal and still make a profit.
This shop should be a heritage sight. I've seen them throw away chips whilst other fisheries would refry

they're not clueless ... you are .... they get / take [what is it] 30% of sales in "tax" ... 30% of £2.50 is less than 30% of £8.50.
Plus, you may be unaware that some fish n chip shops were charging over £10 for a portion of fish n chips several years ago ... and the people selling them the fish / potatoes [or ready cut chips] oil and other stuff saw how much they were making [and bragging about] every time they made a delivery, and they wanted some of that too.
Business is about making money ... and business is controlled by the anti-Christian scum that you probably voted for.

I have pleasure fished out of various ports on the south coast. In the 80's and 90's cod was plentiful on the boats and the shore. Now cod is as common as rocking horse sh*t.
Various reasons for it but the biggest cause of the demise of cod in the channel and north sea is the slight increase in sea temperature that is stopping cod spawning.
Chips will be still around but the owners will make less changing of fat and oil so if it looks like something coming out the ground like in Kuwait they just filter and carry on using.
You should see australia…use to be able to get minimum chips for 3 dollars…now that’s the small and it’s 5-7 dollars MORE for the large. For some potatoes in oil…

Let's put it this way the price of haddock has remained the same cod nearly 80per stone potatoes about the same from last year but the real issues are gas electricity oils packaging all shot up peas from 7quid to nearly 15pounds I could go on also some restaurants say it steak is cheaper than cod

I have stopped eating all takeaways ….fish and chips ,Chinese and curries all stoped ,money is to hard to earn to squander …besides I can make it just as good at home

I live in the far east and I can buy Cod/Haddock Chips M/peas for under 4UK not T/A eat in, all cooked fresh to order. Seems something is wrong somewhere. If we can do it why cant the UK.
Why do small business people always suck up the cost? just pass it on and do it as it happens not later.
Good point put you know stupid councils give permission for anyone to open fast food outlets how many times can you put prices up at these times

Fish and chip shops have always robbed customers for years two to three pounds for chips six pounds for a thin lump of tail end fish you can do fish and chips at home for £2.50 the tide has turned on them now it’s pay back time.
What? You can do a pizza for 50p you can do a Chinese for £1.00 so what? The ingredients in fish and chips is probably the dearest of most if not all take aways. If you want someone to cook for you and pay staff wages and VAT it costs. simples.
You couldn't even buy the ingredients for that. You would need a microscope to see it.

Sad times I run a chippy costs of good since the new year have doubled
Most chippys were getting overpriced before the pandemic & therefore deserved to be avoided.
I can get all the ingredients, fish, peas, chips (all Harry Ramsdens) from Iceland for half the price of the chippy.
Not really we all have overheads energy costs have doubled too be honest the future is uber or delivoroo when customers pay 20pounds for the same food and everyone complains we becoming like the USA 🇺🇸 very fat

My biggest gripe with fish & chips shops is the massive portion of chips they give you when I get fish & chips for two I ask for a child’s portion & that’s plenty for two generally if I just getting for myself I just get fish & peas no wonder their is an obesity problem.
These portions were the same if not bigger back in the day and there was no obesity problems then!!!

People of the UK - Stop eating the same fish like a bunch of sheep.....cod & haddock NO MORE, try different fish. whiting, pollack, gurnard etc, all lovely fish. Stop being precious about it. (if I cooked you gurnard and said it was cod you would all say its nice!)

Fish and chip is disgusting anyway, it has one taste: stale grease, and one texture: mush. Plus it's a ripoff, it used to be a poor mans meal, but nowadays curry, kebabs and Chinese are better value.
