Imagine beating on the windows and screaming for help and someone actually SEEING you but the cops never end up responding to it. That was completely tragic.
That was my immediate thought, too. This poor woman was fighting so hard, and it all just slipped away. I also can't imagine being the woman who called, and tried to follow him and help. Hearing that kind of scream really is blood chilling. And to have the image of her pounding on the window, and screaming that hellish scream, and knowing what happened to her? That'll break someone too.
@@Amor-lz5sbit wasn’t the cops that dropped the ball, it was 911 dispatchers. The cops did everything they could with the information they had as fast as they could aside from the responding officers, they should be retrained or find a new career.
@ I believe she was forcibly taken into her home with her 2 babies from her back patio, put them both in one crib to keep them safe, and left with him… in fear of her life and her children’s lives. Even if he knocked on her door for help and she opened it and was overpowered right there, doesn’t make her stupid. Alarm bells were going off within 10 minutes of her husband getting there. Wonder how quick you’d react? That was muscle memory, likely learned from her father. Also, that’s just a shit thing to say.
Denise Amber Lee was a 21-year-old woman from North Port, Florida, whose tragic 2008 kidnapping and murder highlighted critical issues in emergency response systems. Denise was abducted from her home by Michael King, a man who had planned the crime in advance. Despite several 911 calls, including one from Denise herself during her captivity and others from witnesses who saw suspicious activity, miscommunication and delays in law enforcement response led to her death. The case became a turning point for advocating improvements in 911 dispatch systems, including better training, technology, and communication protocols to prevent similar tragedies. Denise’s husband, Nathan Lee, became a vocal advocate for enhancing emergency response systems and founded the Denise Amber Lee Foundation, which works to ensure public safety through improvements in the 911 system. The case underscores the importance of effective communication between 911 operators, law enforcement, and the public to save lives in emergencies.
Same. I was hoping this would turn out with good news. I feel so sorry for Denise and her family. Bless the cousin’s daughter that called police and tried to save her.
@@imalwaysright I was hoping for a safe return for Denise. And the woman who heard her scream, and did the right thing by calling 911, but her call was misfiled!? So heartbreaking 💔
She should have listened to her husband when he told her to at least close the blinds while walking around the house half naked. I'm not saying it's her fault but she could have helped PREVENT it...
This pisses me off so much. Every single person in his family that was involved with keeping this covered up should have gotten prison too. Just as guilty as he is.
I am like the rest of us on this page when we criticise the police. We are perfect, like Disney happy-ending movies; none of us have ever made a big mistake. One thing we know for sure is that God was too busy finding lost car keys to help in this situation.
If he felt comfortable enough to bring someone he kidnapped around his family that means this isn’t something new, if I were investigators I’d be looking at unsolved crimes in the last 15 years..
@@tashibrissot8966 He definitely had past behavior that was just kinda ignored and never brought to police attention. He exposed himself in a parking lot to a woman in her car, he brought a 15 year old to a hair salon for a haircut who he said he met online and began making out with her in front of the staff, and he also pretty much raped a woman. He invited a woman over and plowed her with alcohol (he did not drink) and when she woke up he was having sex with her. There were definitely warning signs. But, I personally don't think he intended to bring Denise around his family, I think he was desperate because he had already kidnapped and brutally assaulted her, and he needed those items to finish what he started. I believe he had NO intentions of his cousin seeing Denise, he walked up to his house alone, got the items and said his lawn mower broke down, and when he was walking back to his vehicle w/ the items, thats when the cousin saw Denise. Michael kept pushing her head down in the back, and sped off and said "everything is fine" right when his cousin questioned Wtf is going on. I'm just saying I don't think that Michael really was comfortable taking her to his cousin's, he just had no other choice, and he tried to hide her. But yeah, I wouldn't be surprised AT ALL if he has more crimes under his belt.
this case hurts me so bad because she was so smart in how she handled the phone call, and that people were so close to saving her and just barely missed her... Her dad raised an extremely intelligent young woman. Her saying she just wants to go back home and see her babies.... it kills me... I cry over this case every time...

Probably someone who is in fear for their life and thinks them or their family will be next if they don't cooperate. He made a police report, he's clearly someone who didn't want to do anything but likely felt like he had no choice in it because he doesn't want his daughter to be hurt.
@@JimMilton-ej6zi The cousin only made a police report his daughter called 911 and the police found HIM. If he was so scared, he could have called police AS SOON AS King left, to give them King’s name, description, car description & plate, phone number and home address. The cops should have rung the phone after the daughter called and warned King the game was up, and if she was still alive it would be better for him.
Agreed. Cowardice needs to start being a criminal offense. If you see something, you say something, doesn't matter if it's family or not. You don't have to risk your life or chase the guy down (some good Samaritan's have actually done this and helped) but like come on, you see he had a bound up woman you don't know and you just "stay out of it" Hell no. I don't care who it is, I'm calling police and I'll fight you if I have to to stop you. I don't even like local corruption either. I have no issue fighting my partner if I was a cop and he did something wrong. I don't understand how people cower like this, unless they're just bad people too, it makes sense.
I definitely agreed with that. Actually, that's a crime, according to the law. The denial of assistance to a person in danger is a crime. And not only that: he was also a direct witness to a kidnapping and clearly stated that he wanted to "stay out of it". Well, "stay out of it", when "it" is someone witnessing a kidnapping, with the tragic result of the victim being murdered (I convey all my sorrow to her father, her husband and her children. There are no words that I could say to console after something like this), that is punishable by imprisonment. And he gave him the shovel to bury the poor girl, so...
But at the same time, that man was probably was SCARED for his daughter ! If dude was that bold to bring a kidnapped woman to a relatives house,he is capable of anything !
Im a former 911 dispatcher and they totally dropped the ball in many ways. I can say after this case numerous states did retraining so that it wouldn't happen in the states we worked in Hopefully at least. I cringe every time I hear the dispatcher with Denise and all she keeps repeating is hello. We are trained (at least where I'm from) to pick up on open lines and asking simple questions. Yes and Nos and she failed from the start. And she should have pinged the phone. This is such a tragic case that if people did their jobs maybe just maybe she would have survived. 😢
If she would have asked yes or no questions, the guy would have known she was on the phone with 9 1 1. I don't think someone tied up in the back seat saying "yes" or "no" for no reason would be useful. I really think the operator did the best she could. I am thinking the responding officers did not move quickly enough. The operator seemed to catch on pretty quick.
@@catserver8577 The dispatcher was not doing her job well.... She literally asked to turn down the radio .She failed to send help and She was also suspended because of her behavior.
@catserver8577 we are trained to ask questions that don't just require yes or no answers but in some of that call the Dispatcher clearly could have gotten some in. She also asked her for her first and last name. That gave the perp a clue she had his phone. What sealed the deal imo was when she asked for her address. Those arent simple easy questions. I know I'm saying this in the aftermath of the situation but trust me I've been through calls one in particular that sticks out with this situation is hear the gun go off that killed my caller. The guy had no clue she was on the phone with me he just was there to do the thing and she gave me the answers I needed in the simplest of ways with the question's I asked. We can't save everyone but that Dispatcher should have tried harder. I'm sorry for my opinion but hell 18 yrs on the job where I live. I've been heard alot and my health has gone to shit because of the stress.
I agree I was so frustrated hearing that 911 woman being a dunce. Clearly there was distress from that call and anyone listening! I even said to my husband this 911 person is a dunce. I blame her for a lot

Bro, if my own brother, dad, uncle, best friend, etc. showed up with a girl tied up and asked for a shovel, I would immediately hold them at gunpoint and call the cops. How tf did the cousin not get charged with something? He could've stopped the whole thing.
Harold needs to be charged with withholding information and basically going along with this, no body in their right mind just gives someone the tools for murder and thinks nothing of it
A huge obstructing justice charge on Michael and Mike's buddy. They are imo not much different from him. Why they weren't charged and thrown in jail baffles me. Harold was accomplice to murder fave shovel, and the other tools what the heck did he think he was gonna do with a tied up women bring her out to dinner?

He is a coward and I hope he feels bad that he could have done something as simple as picking up the phone and calling 911 as soon as he left, but someone who doesn't have the decency to do it, I doubt he even feels bad
Idc that Harold, the cousin didn’t call 911. I care that he didn’t intervene. I care that he gave his cousin all the tools he did, to hide the woman he saw fighting off his cousin, after she was murdered. I care that his daughter showed more integrity, courage, and morality than her father. Harold is not just a coward. Harold is not just a POS. Harold is a cowardly ass POS. Harold should also be in jail. What an absolute pathetic excuse for men these three are. I don’t think saying “the only man responsible for Denise’s death” is an accurate statement in regards to this case. Harold is also responsible.
The lazy legal system only started with police response to the initial crime. There was ample evidence for Harold to be charged as an accessory to murder, and the fact that he never was tells me he was a good ol' boy in a small town. Not even gonna look it up, I guarantee that town's population is less than two thousand.
Harold is also responsible for making his daughter call and giving key information. By your logic harold shouldnt even have called because you arent happy until he fights the psychopath and gets stabbed
@@Dotfye He didn't need to fight him off. But he saw a KIDNAPPED WOMAN in his cousins car and gave him A SHOVEL AND A GAS CANISTER. That says enough. If he had called her right away it would of given the police a much bigger headstart on the chase. He knew his cousin was going to kill that woman and he waited.

@jeannafoxall6519 Where do you get that bogus info from? The driver asked if she should follow. The dispatcher asked her supervision if the driver should follow. After a long wait the supervisor gave the green light to follow and the dispatcher told the driver to follow the car if possible. The driver said they took another road and she wasnt sure if she could get over in time and then catch up. What are you actually talking about? The driver didnt need to ask for permission in the first place. Any normal person worried enough to call 911 on a screaming kid, is going to do the right thing and follow. Secondly, the supervisor should have made a quicker decision and the driver would have been able to follow once given "permission". The dispatcher and supervisor failed to relay the info to the neighboring county. So many people failed.

This story is missing a huge part!!! A woman called into 911 because there’s a green Camaro driving crazy and a woman screaming inside of it. But the 911 operator doesn’t link the 2 and she tells the woman to stop following the car even though the woman keeps saying she doesn’t want to. They had him and Denise was alive. But the 911 operator dropped the ball and it costed her her life
“the 911 operator caught on to the dangerous game being played on the other end" yeah after asking hello hello hello hello 7 times for 30 seconds. what a fucking joke
I feel like it was obvious after the second sentence that denise was talking to the kidnapper and not the operator. Why was the operator so useless, why would they not be trained to recognise this. This is the saddest one of these ive seen. The police were alerted early, the neighbour provided excellent info. The victim fought and provided more info. A stranger reported the position of the car. The killers own family turned him in right away and after all this it still ends too late due in a huge part to the crappy operators on TWO peoples calls.
After 16 years why is he still sitting on d eath row?? Why do convicts of crimes like this sit in prison for literally decades? The sentence should be carried out within a certain amount of time, it's ridiculous.

They need to make more requirements to become a 911 dispatcher. There are far too many cases of dispatchers making life threatening mistakes or just being insensitive and stupid while talking to people currently in danger. Like that one case where the woman was put in a barrel by her husband and managed to call 911, the dispatcher thought it was a prank call and accused her of faking instead of immediately taking it seriously. The woman could barley breath and was going in and out of consciousness and the dispatch literally asked “so are you gonna talk to me or just breathe loudly into the phone”
My heart shatters for the horror that Denise went through and the nightmare that her husband, her babies, her parents & family had to endure. Denise was SO smart and bold with how she called 911, gave as much info as possible whilst trying to lay low simultaneously to avoid suspicion. But to then hear how the 911 operators failed?? I'm seething!! Hearing her cry and beg for her babies and hubby.. gut wrenching 😭 To add on top of that: Everyone who's seen that *something* sketchy was going on should've intervened right then and there. I hold that father of the 13 yo girl & the cousin(?) responsible for that. They're basically an accomplice to an active kidnapping and the murder that shortly after followed. That 13 yo girl & Jane were the real witness heroes who called 911 regardless, was upfront about everything they'd seen, girl even confronted her dad to get the name of that monster, described the car perfectly AND relayed exactly how she witnessed the scene with a heavily distressed person in that car. Everyone, except that heroic kid, the witness Jane and Denise's family, deserve charges for failure to act and being an accomplice. Like FFS - even if you hate the cops and are scared of them charging you for not storing your guns properly or an outstanding warrant, THERE IS A LIFE ON THE LINE. Your marijuana possession falls on flat ears and gets lots of leniency when you help intervene with an active kidnapping and murder! No matter what, whether you know the person or not, that distressed individual is someones child, loved one, spouse, parent, sibling & beloved friend. All it takes is a LITTLE BIT of empathy to take action and do the right f-cking thing!!! 🤬 May Denise rest in everlasting peace and one day be reunited with her beloved babies, hubby & family again.

Denise was failed. She was so smart, and so brave. My heart hurts for her.

Charge the cousin for accessory. He knew something was up and didn’t stop him. Then he wanted to “stay out of it”. Lock him up to.
Agreed what a little weasel

I completely agree. It was almost as bad as that one dispatcher who laughed and hung up on someone calling over and over thinking it was a prank.
Remember the dispatch told her NOT to follow. She repeatedly asked 'Should I follow?' She was advised by 'pros ' not to.
@jeannafoxall6519
Where do you get that bogus info from?
"can you turn down the radio down?" LIKE YEAH OF COURSE I CAN ASK MY KIDNAPPER TO TURN IT DOWN SO YOU CAN HEAR ME GETTING KIDNAPPED. Seriously this 911 responder is hands down stupid in handling the situation
Yeh, she need some jail time, so the message is...if you do stupid things you got consequences! Hope she read this comment today's.😊
I live right down the street from where Denise was taken, this entire case really shook our whole town, and it still breaks my heart to this day. 💔😢
The failure of the 911 dispatcher to immediately send help is a tragedy!!!
They are dei hires. I've had a few times dealing with stupidity.
Unfortunately dispatchers don't have the ability to track phones like they do in the movies.
Life isn't the movies. Triangulation a cellphone only gives you an approximate location and if they're traveling, it's very difficult.
It's not like she had a "send swat team" button to press and just failed to press it.

How does a dispatcher not get fired for this? Even if someone doesn’t answer your questions it’s common practice to start a process to trace the call and see if everyone is okay
I watch a lot of crime stories and this just made me cry. She desperately did her best to help herself.
Jesus. You can do everything right and it doesn’t matter. Denise put on a clinic of self-preservation and quick thinking, and her family’s consolation prize is her Herculean effort unrewarded
Just like that teenage kid who got trapped in his mom's minivan when the back seat folded down on him, he used Siri to call 911 and gave his location and vehicle description, and the ball still got dropped. Same for the woman who crashed in a river and was drowning.

That operator is the most ignorant person I ever heard in my life, Where did common sense go during this call? Clearly the person is distressed, and you as the operator can't put two and two together.
Should have be charged too
36 hour suspension for a fatal mistake.. what a joke
But the 911 operator dropped the ball and it costed her her life
My heart broke hearing Denise's pleading voice. There is just wayyy to much evil in this world.

I can't believe they missed her by a couple hours this is heartbreaking. She was completely terrified.
Have to have time for appeals and the possibility for the introduction of new evidence. They used to put people out right away. Turns out they did it to a lot of innocent men and women
Such a heart breaking story, i really thought the cops were gonna catch him in time. So sad how man people messed up that day!

I don't think this was Kings first rodeo. He didn't just wake up that day and plan and commit this sickening crime. Also with the attempted abduction of the 13 Year old girl on her way home from school I would bet he is responiple for unsolved sexu*l crimes within a fifty mile radius of where the POS lived.
Listening to her pleading to see her beautiful husband and babies again is heart wrenching. 😩
The only thing that that monster did that was somewhat human was to put 2 yr.old Adam in the crib with 6 month old Noah, or he allowed Denise to do it,
or there might have been 2 tragedies that day.
THESS DISPATCHERS ALWAYS PISS ME TF OFF ENTIRELY
Me too! I literally can barely stand the STUPID.
We had a dispatcher in our EOC that was completely inept. I didn’t know how she got hired, she couldn’t even spell basic words when entering information. I worked on the road, and after a week of her, I had to go to the Sheriff. It was that bad.
Dispatchers need no degree, just a high school diploma. They should at least have a communications degree at minimum. They get on the job training, and boom, your life is in their hands. Very scary for law enforcement as well as citizens.
Same. I guess you don’t need any kind of qualifications to answer a life or death phone call.
SAME! I can only assume they get a TON of prank calls all day every day and that's why they always sound so skeptical and jaded.
Wow! Denise was so smart and courageous playing the kidnappers like that
that 911 operator pissed me off the way she kept saying “hello”
It was that, but the asking to get them to turn the radio floored me🤯
Total incompetence!
@@boganshazz821 That's a pretty reasonable question. Not knowing exactly what's happening, maybe they could have turned it down? You know, so they could hear? It's easy for a fatass who already knows the outcome to make judgment calls.
@shikamaru281281 True, under the exact same circumstances, I'd probably ask the same thing🤦♀️
To add, I had no idea of the outcome when the disdain I felt for such an assinine request was evident
@@boganshazz821 If you took emergency calls seriously you would say something like "are you in danger right now" Cough once for yes or twice for no etc. Standard stuff if you are an emergency call operator actually expecting an emergency situation of the other end of the line.
There are far too many of these types of calls, operators not taking them seriously and even mocking callers - and as pointed out. There was no standardised training before this.
RIP Denise. This is one of those stories that will stick with me forever
5 calls, 2 one and a half day suspended dispatchers and the only one to change anything is the husband who asked that dispatchers get retrained. 56:15
So did he really just so happen to see her cutting hair on her back porch. Thats so scary omg
I’m a CJS major and I’ve watched tons and tons of these types of videos, but for whatever reason, this one… this one seriously disturbed me.
It probably disturbs you because you know that victim did everything she could to get out alive. All the people that are trained to get her out alive failed. And of course the witnesses were useless. It almost makes you wanna give up on humanity.
i can say the same. i hold all the crime cases i watch in high regard with utmost compassion for those affected, but this particular case is so devasting, it physically hurts in my chest
There were multiple opportunities for a good outcome that weren't taken. She did everything possible to get help and didn't get it. When bad things happen to good people through no fault of their own it's a reminder we don't have as much control over life as we'd like to believe.
Cuz she had so many chances to be saved
So disgusting that this womans call could have saved the woman but they fumbled the call and Denise didn't make it. So sick.
The cousin has a daughter himself but no empathy for Denise, her family, her children. Disgusting.
Hearing her cry and beg for her babies and hubby.. gut wrenching 😭
To add on top of that: Everyone who's seen that *something* sketchy was going on should've intervened right then and there.
May Denise rest in everlasting peace and one day be reunited with her beloved babies, hubby & family again. If there's a god, I hope they take good care of her in the afterlife and douse her in love.
My heart goes out to her wonderful hubby, babies and family
❤️🩹❤️🩹❤️🩹🕊️✨
I'm pretty sure the 13-year-old girl was not the daughter. The daughter was another person (of unknown age) that called the cops. The 13-year-old girl was someone who was walking home from school and was being followed by Michael.
Every woman’s worst nightmare. RIP Denise ❤ 🙏🏻
