I’m just finishing my first boat, a small B&B Yacht designed skiff. I can truly see something like Temptress as my next build. I’m a little more inclined to a bow rider, mainly to include a growing family!
This is the future of amateur boat building. I was sick of Glen-L designs from 19th century which is 70% building and 30% trying to sort out the plans. I believe this will be the boat I'll build.
I hope so, I feel like the subject is somewhat outdated and long overdue some modernisation. I would love for this to be the route that gets more people into building boats!
@@nathanbedfordforrest9546 Nope, Glen-l refuses to create CAD plans assuming people will pirate it so they force people to go medievel tracing methods. Trust me, I had my discussion with them.
Have not seen anything come across as complete as this, you can see a lot of time and effort has been required. I would love to see what you have prepared for the fit-out of the boat, from seat manufacture, gauges, and brightwork through to engines etc. Will these be part of the package? I would also love to see one of your customers (preferably as they will give us a real-world experience), or yourself, of course, going through the build process. From control P of the plans to the water test.
Everything for this boat has been modelled and accounted for. The boat is set up mechanically for an Ilmor V8 running through a V-Drive. We have also designed custom fittings for the boat including the cutwater and transom bands as well as a custom windscreen bracket to name a few items. All of the hardware will be available in a separate hardware plan if desired. I will do another video when this is ready as I am still kitting those items at the moment. There hasn't been a boat built yet, I only finished the plans last week, but I am intending to do a UA-cam series on building one in 1/4 scale where I will show how every stage of the build is done. At that size I can demonstrate the process without reducing any detail so it will be exactly the same as the full size boat.
@@DanLeeBoatbuilding Fantastic news Dan, I cannot wait to see the videos on the fittings, maybe something on power supplies as well one day. I thought I saw you had a boat design that had a sloping back for rivers? But cannot seem to find it now. It might have been around 19ft?? Something like that at around 23ft with an Ev or V8 would also be interesting. Keep up the great work.
Yes, that will be the slipper launch design that you have seen. I am kitting that one at the moment so it will be the next one to launch. It is 25ft and set up for both Diesel and Electric drive. You can find it in this video: ua-cam.com/video/e6w7tSZ843c/v-deo.html at 5:52.

Beautiful yes, but reminds me of a mix of a 50´s Hacker and a 60´s Riva Ariston. When re-designing these classics, it´s ok to make them more modern. I would have sized it up to 29 ft, added a slanted transom with a walkthrough to a tiny structurally integrates swimstep. I would have added more volume to bow and tapered the lines back, like the Rio Colorado or the Aquarama. A good example of a modern re-invention of a classic is Marc Newson´s interpretation of the Riva Aquariva, (Yes I know the Aquariva in itself is a re-invention of the Aquarama). In the design of the transom, Newson borrowed from the past, more specifically from the Rio Espera from around 1969, and introduced the rear "wings" flanking the transom walkthrough. It´s an absolutely gorgeous design, that could be awesome in a wooden version, maybe scaled down from 33ft to 29ft. Dan - Have a go at the drawing board ;-)
@@DanLeeBoatbuilding Oh, that's awesome. I would love to check out those plans. I've been contemplating building another boat. Possible for me to shrink down your Temptress plans down to about 13'? Hi without doubt the best set of plans I have seen. Do have any plans to go slightly bigger and reflect a Riva Auarama? I do not have the building space at the moment if I had I would be a potential builder.
Hi Dan, any ongoing builds from the Temptress design? Beautiful design. Do you also recommend specs for metal parts including window frame, bow strips, etc? What is your suggestion for engine, and perhaps also in ligth of future sustsinability?
There are, take a look at Bob's channel, he is currently building a Temptress: www.youtube.com/@Polymerman also Serdar who is currently building our slipper launch design: ua-cam.com/video/Elq58Vv5ElE/v-deo.html We have all of the hardware modelled for the boat so we can assist in either fabricating or sourcing it if you like. The boat is spec'd for an Ilmor 5.3L GDI engine and we can also assist with the installation and mounting of that.
That's a very common question that we get. No I'm afraid this boat isn't designed to accommodate a jet drive or a stern drive. It should be shaft driven through a v-drive gearbox.
I want to build a classic style small wooden runabout (16 to 20 feet) but with modern lines and performance. Where do I start looking for examples, plans etc. The first person that suggests Glen-L gets sent to the gallows.
😆 There isn't much out there really, certainly based on a modernised hull. That spec of boat is pretty high up our list to develop so I would think we will add it to the range at some time, I would also like to build something in that size range as well. When that will be though I'm not sure. I have a guy working here now that I am training to do the kitting work on our designs which hopefully means we can start launching some of them more quickly. Once we get some of the other backlogged designs launched we may look at developing an 18'. It might be a way off though right now.
Question. How does one cover the cockpit area on open-seaters? I see plenty of designs but no one ever shows how that is solved. It is like one can't be caught by rain or having to store the boat short term etc in the open.
This would usually be done with a running canvas, take a look at the slipper launch that we have developed: danleeboatbuilding.co.uk/product/marilyn-25ft-slipper-launch/ this has an option of an integrated canvas.
The standard plans just include the information to build the boats hull and deck. We have the entire mechanical system 3D modelled though so we can assist builders with the installation of this when the time comes, depending on the engine and driveline that the choose to go for.
You did an amazing job on the CAD design, may I ask what program you are using? I want to learn 3D for a long time, maybe you gave me the last push! keep up with more videos.
It can vary greatly based on spec, location and therefore timber availability. As a finger in the air price though I would think you would want to allow around £10k for the timber needed to build this boat.
Hi Dan I’m a big fan of classic looking runabout boats but roughly all in how much would making the temptress cost all in. Please reply as I am quite interested
It's a difficult question to answer as it depends largely on what spec you want to build the boat to, what timber you use, driveline and even finish. All of these elements can vary the cost widely. I would recommend that you take a look at my Forum: danleeboatbuilding.co.uk/forum/ it is quite new but now starting to get established with a few threads. There are a couple of people on there sharing their prices for kits and parts which might start to give you a helpful insight into what costings will come out at.
