Blue is lively today. I hope she gets as much fish today as she got yesterday. Looking really good.

I just love baby blue, I've watched him go from looking pretty bad to looking good now! My only concern is the chest feathers...he has a completely bald spot there.

As I mentioned in the second paragraph of the description, Blue is getting food, and is doing more flapping and at this point, Blue (and parents Mere and Pere) seem to be providing the support Blue needs! We will continue to keep watch but for now are trusting the eagles. I'm working on a video of Blue claiming a nice sized fish from one of the parents this morning - should be up soon. ~JudyB

@HancockWildlifeFoundation so they have to wait until blue falls out of the nest and possibly gets injured from the fall before they will help?

@@FL.native Given that the choice at this point appears to be between watching Blue continue to strengthen her/his wings and with a bit of luck fly strongly out of the nest and with a bit of luck have a long happy life, and chasing Blue out of the nest by approaching in a giant lift - well, I'm going with option 3, which is hoping that Blue is flying well when she/he leaves the nest (and maybe comes and goes and eats on the nest for a week or so, like our fledglings at White Rock and Surrey Reserve are doing) - and knowing that there are people who may be able to rescue her/him if flying doesn't work as well as we hope initially. ~JudyB

If the parents do not provide enough food now, what will it be when he/she fledge? Eagles need their parents after fledgling to feed them as they learn how to do it by themselves.

Good question - and the answer I've received from those who have worked a lot longer than I have is that young eagles like Blue have the instincts they need to find food and survive, though the first year is tough for a lot of them. It helps if they are able to follow the parents around and "steal" their food for a while, not to mention see where they find easy food, like roadkill and spawned out salmon - but in BC, it seems that most of the fledglings instinctively head north to the salmon rivers, and if the salmon runs are good this year, they'll find enough food to get them through the first few months - and will see enough eagles get other prey to figure out how to do it. We had first time parents on our Surrey Reserve nest last year, and watching them figure out how to feed the peeping little things that had recently been eggs was a bit scary and very amazing - and they did great! One of our eaglets with a tracker hatched at Surrey Reserve when the previous pair was there, and got into a bit of trouble after fledging and spent some time in rehab - getting lots of food, and watching other eagles, but not hanging out with parents. Loki headed north immediately after being released, probably totally based on instincts, and on seeing other eagles heading that way. Because we have a tracker on her, we know where she's been - and we know she was still going strong as of June 1st if this year. She hatched in April 2020, so she and her tracker are now four years old - so if we don't hear from her again this fall, it's likely the tracker that has failed, not her (she often doesn't check in much this time of year, preferring remote areas with few cell towers). You can learn more about Loki here (BETA04 is her tracker number) - hancockwildlife.org/our-projects/beta-project-page/beta04/ Hope that helps explain our perspective on all this - and keeping fingers crossed that Blue will also survive and thrive.

Not an expert but from what I have seen, Blue's leg feathers need to grow in more and then it will fledge in time. Lack of food perhaps caused the feathers to be late in developing. I think Blue should be given all the time it needs to fledge in nature. Intervention should be only if necessary as stated above. 👍Many eaglets do not survive in 'rescue' settings which can be traumatic to them. They do not have human understanding to know what's happening. Constant testing and handling has caused more harm than good in many situations. We need to be patient. It's nature. Blue has had a good food supply. All is well.

@ghostrider7104 blue isn't getting enough food for energy to fledge. I think these platforms are not helping the eagles. They might have chosen a tree with branches to nest in. Very disappointed 😞

Thank you for saying what I tried to say better than I could. We also are watching the leg feathers - and the slower development of them might be related to some issues with lack of food, but they seem to be growing (I think - not always easy to be sure), and the energy level and flapping/lift are definitely improving. And we all want what will give Blue the best chance for a long and happy life. ~JudyB
