    Does this still function as flash paper by not leaving residue? I love the look of this more than normal flash paper for what my plan is. I'll check your channel for follow up vids and see if you made one using the potassium perchlorate you mentioned in a comment to see if that one still sparkles, and if it indeed burns faster.
    Also just verifying if this creates any noxious fumes like standard flash paper making does? I don't think it should since you all that happened was disolving and drying(bonus compared to the standard way)

      Most of the time the flash paper left no residue but occasionally it would leave a tiny amount of ash. The paper does have a strange burning smell. I think it is best used in the garage or evening in the yard as a party trick.
      I have not done any more work with the flash paper. The focus of my channel is high power rocketry and custom made propellants. ua-cam.com/users/TheRocketeer

    In my experience magicians paper is thinner than paper towels being split but I’m very curious to try this method! The paper I’m familiar almost looks like thin wrapping material; do you think certain papers would have a similar reaction or is the two ply being split an important factor? I imagine tissue paper (which is the feel and thickness I’m use to use with buying premade flash paper) when I hear of it. Does the material not really matter outside of the chemical treatment?

    • @TheRocketeer
      @TheRocketeer  Рік тому +1

      The split paper towel does seem to hold the oxidizer well. It does turn back to small crystals when dry.
      It never hurts to try something else.

      @@TheRocketeer thank you for this info. I was also wondering about how stable this treated paper is compared to some other examples on UA-cam using the "gun cotton" approach but using 100% cotton paper. They say that the paper degrades over time. I doubt that you did some long-term exploration regarding this issue of stability (and also whether the AP flakes off the paper once it dries) but if you have any additional info on this point, that would be great. I'd like to try this myself but given the hazmat fee for shipping, just 1# of this powder is nearly $40. I don't mind experimenting myself but I also try to avoid others' mistakes (or trial failures) if I can.

      @@drcoolit The ammonium perchlorate did not degrade the paper after a year. The paper towel seems to hold the small granules well. You could try potassium perchlorate instead. It is cheaper and would most likely react even faster. www.fireworkscookbook.com/product/potassium-perchlorate/

      I cut a small square and fold it so it is loose. The trick is to toss the flash paper up so that it unfolds quickly resulting in a quick flash. A large folded square may not burn completely before landing on the ground. I hope that helps.

    Nitric acid is simpler and more accessable. You can easily make nitric acid with sulfuric acid drain cleaner and potassium nitrate stump remover. Ammonium perchlorate is way harder to get than drain cleaner and stump remover.

    • @TheRocketeer
      @TheRocketeer  4 роки тому +5

      Ammonium perchlorate is commonly used in rocket propellant so I keep it in my inventory. AP can be ordered from Amazon or a number of chemical supply companies. It may be very difficult to obtain in other areas.
      High quality flash paper can be made from acid as you and others pointed out. The title does say "no acid." I am a rocket guy and not a chemist.

      A quick check reveals that nitric acid is not available in the US from Amazon and it is expensive on eBay, often requiring pricy shipping. Sulphuric acid is not cheap on Amazon and few vendors offer it on eBay.
      I don't think the process could be any easier than dipping in water without worrying about caustic acid and the necessary safety equipment and toxic fumes.

    • @HomeGrownPyrotechnics
      @HomeGrownPyrotechnics 5 років тому +3

      @@TheRocketeer you dont actually need to buy nitric acid, just mix the h2so4 with kno3 and it makes nitric acid. The h2so4 can just be baught from the hardware store as drain cleaner. WATER ISN'T MEASURED BY GRAMS IT'S MEASURED BY MIL or OZs ,,,,etc liquid measurement

    • @TheRocketeer
      @TheRocketeer  3 роки тому

      You are correct about liquid measurements. I am a rocket guy and we measure everything in grams. When all you have is a hammer, everything starts to look like a nail : )

    • @drcoolit
      @drcoolit 2 роки тому +2

      the most accurate way to measure anything (gas, liquid, or solid) is to WEIGH it. As someone once pointed out -- what weighs more, a pound of lead or a pound of feathers? Volumetric measurements are iffy at best no matter what kind of background, or equipment, you have. Weights are consistent and you can measure items to very exact figures. Also, just like the lead/feathers ex., if you are using multiple wet ingredients that may have different densities, it is by far easier to measure out the item by weight than by volume. It's also a lot cleaner since adding weights to a container is easy; having to clean out whatever tool you are using to measure out a series of liquids can be a pain. And for some things (such as gases) trying to measure a specified amount by volume would be senseless (and also impossible). Weight would be the ONLY method you could use.
