Being born in 1973, I grew up with Sesame Street and the Muppets. When Henson died a few months before I turned 17, I started crying and saying "Kermie's dead". 😩. I knew Kermit wasn't really dead, but to me they were combined.
I read a biography about Jim a few years ago and when I read the description of his funeral I started sobbing.
Jim and his team did an great job bringing the Muppets to life for decades. Sure while they're not as good as they were in Jim's era, but at least Disney is still using them for projects. Same with Big Bird and his group over at Sesame Workshop by continuing that series to this day.
The early 80s was definitely the greatest peek for the popularity of the muppets. Jim Henson was also being more revolutionary and creative with the puppet technology. After that though, the amphibian gets to meet a certain cartoon rodent
The Muppets have just had their first theatrical hit with The Muppet Movie, but this is only just the beginning of more adventures on the big screen. Let's find out how this series of shenanigans goes as they check into the hotel, take Manhattan, and star in a spinoff where they're babies.
A spinoff when they were babies that spun off from them taking Manhattan.
Kermit was a part of Sesame Street and The Muppets.
Before Spongebob, it was Muppet Babies that would use live action stock footage. Which is quite ironic because reruns of Muppet Babies would air on Nickelodeon.
Agreed
They also other Puppet Shows like The Wabblous World of Dr Suess
It’s amazing how impactful that “bears wear hats” scene truly was.
wow i never knew
Been a long wait, but it was worth it.
Funny how Disney, The Muppets, Star Wars and even Marvel would have some connections long before they all merged under one company umbrella.
I hope other works outside the Muppets will be mentioned like "The Dark Crystal" and "Fraggle Rock".
Looks like you got your wish
@@akganimationstudioproducti3779 but they didn’t talk about much because defuncland already did that
@@skunkman9815 true
I remember Fraggle Rock, but l don't remember The Dark Crystal.
@@josephclegg3562 I only remember seeing a vhs promo of Fraggle Rock
Interesting fact (Especial for me!) During the song "You can't take no for an answer" in "Muppet take Manhattan". The calendar say once June 17'th. And since it's from 1984. The Muppets was trying to sell their show on Broadway, on the day I was born. XD
The OG "Muppet Babies" is such a good series. Love the pop culture references so much.
Yeah I like the reboot too maybe the intro I like both series
Why its not on Disney plus yet I don't know as a worthy addition to the service and introduce a new generation to the original Muppet babies.
@@mig0171 Both versions of the show are great in their own way as love to see the new Muppet baby make her live action appearance as a adult with the gang.
My guess is because some of the footage that was used still isn't owned by Disney or an company Disney later bought. They didn't want to negotiate to get the rights to those scenes nor be willing to cut them to stream on Disney+.
The original is always the best.
The production companies of The Muppets Take Manhattan are Henson Associates and Delphi II Productions and the film was distributed by Tri-Star Pictures
I never would've guessed that "The Dark Crystal" got the green light because of a two-for-one deal with another Muppet movie. Of course it helps to both have something familiar and completely new at the same time.
Also, Muppet Babies! We make our dreams come true!
The Muppets were actually on the Masked Singer it was so funny 🤣
Hail, fellow Masked Singer enthusiast!
Anything they star in makes it alot better and funnier too. They're legends then, now and forever. 😆 😊 👍 🐸 🐻 🐖 📺
The scene at 16:29 is foreshadowing. They've predicted the future. Little did they know that Disney would own not only the Muppet franchise, but the Star Wars franchise as well. Everyone is singing the opening song from Pinocchio, a Disney movie, that song would be Disney's official anthem, which they would use in their movie logo. This shot with the night sky, the castle, and the fireworks is reminiscent of the current Walt Disney Pictures logo. I think I speak for everyone when I say that this scene is foreshadowing.
Speaking of uncle traveling matt, what was he doing at the wedding?
Im guessing he’s curious about it and he’s gonna write a postcard to his nephew gobo
16:19 and even one of the Parts where the Muppets predicted what will be the future of both Jim Henson and George Lucas
Geez the wait was painful. But it'll definitely be worth it
Edit: it was definitely worth it, obviously
00:00 - 00:20 hahaha thats great but I understand what you mean. I'd love it f you talked more about 'The Christmas Toy' and 'The secret Life of Toys' but then again id love anyone to do that really. Cheers, I'll defo watch all 8 parts tonight :)
The Muppets Take Manhattan is the only Muppet Movie that has no 4th wall jokes.
yes unfortunately
28:26 "The first many in this picture" funny how you say it because The Muppets Take Manhattan was the first Muppet movie I ever saw as a kid and (besides Sesame Street) this was my introduction to The Muppets
I'm calling it, the final part of this Animation Lookback will end with Waldorf's "Welp, they say all good things come to an end." from Season 3.
34:29, I actually watched the first 1 in a half Seasons of Jem and the Holograms 8 Months ago and I still have to finish the other 1 in a Half Seasons of the Show (since it did have a total of 3 Seasons incase anyone's wondering what I'm talking about)!
Kermit the frog was on The Masked Singer in season 5 as the snail it was so cool
I'm just now realizing that the Muppets had tied with both Marvel and Star Wars before Disney bought them out, so could it have been Kermit's idea to have Disney buy them too?
The Muppets got connections to everything everyone lol
From the thumbnail, I know now that the episode will be about:
The Great Muppet Caper
The Muppets Take Manhattan
Muppet Babies
With that in mind, my guess for the fourth episode's topics will be:
The Jim Henson Hour
The deaths of Henson and Richard Hunt
The Muppets Christmas Carol
Edit: After watching the episode, I'll modify my predictions for the fourth episode:
Basically everything Jim Henson did before his death, including Labyrinth, the Jim Henson Hour, Muppet Vision 3D, and the failed attempt at giving the Muppets' rights to Disney.
@@toonandgame4342 I'd think they'd save the death of Henson as a cliffhanger, similar to Walt Disney's death in the Disney Animation lookback.
4:30 i must say liu grade made a lot of puppet movies and shows possible, he made gerry andersons shows possible, you know thunderbirds
I definitely remember the Muppet Babies airing on Nick Jr. at some point. Can’t speak to the quality of the later show.
Why do I have a feeling things will get dark in the next part?
Wish I actually thought to go to bed earlier, so I could have chatted with you all live.
Kermit said we tried and we failed lol. Maybe that's why they failed cause like Yoda would say do or do not there is no try lol.
Marvel also did the animation for the short lived fraggle rock animated series.
Which by the way yes that was a thing, it only lasted for 13 episodes and today you can see all 13 episodes on UA-cam
Sure but until 1981 when they bought DePatie Freleng Enterprises, Marvel asked other studios to do adaptations of their characters including DFE towards the end of their run. Though the Hanna Barbera Fantastic Four series is a lot better then the DFE version. Then again that was an different time for Saturday Morning television in the DFE version.
I always loved the Muppet Babies whenever they appeared on TV
I’m sure it’ll be on The Great Muppet Caper, The Muppets Take Manhattan and Muppet Babies.
Most likely.
Every time I think I’ve dug into the darkest depths of Jim Henson’s genius, someone always hands me a shovel.
Who else thinks Jenny from The Muppets Take Manhattan is absolutely adorable?
Did you know that in 1995, the Jim Henson company teamed up with Sony Pictures entertainment and founded the company Jim Henson Pictures? Their first film was Buddy, a film about a gorilla at the circus. Sony Pictures went on to distribute other Jim Henson projects as well like Bear in the Big Blue House, The Wubbulous World of Dr. Seuss, and the 4th big screen installment to the Muppets, Muppets from Space. The movie was released in the Summer of 1999 and is about Gonzo on an identity crisis and tries to discover his origins, which turned to be from outer space. Another Jim Henson movie, released in the fall of the same year, The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland, which is about Elmo trying to rescue his blanket, while being transported in Grouchland, a town where everyone is grumpy and gets their cars dirty, where it is illegal to ask for help, this was considered to be one of the most beloved films for preschoolers.
I remember that studio.
I'm predicting the next part is going to cover Labyrinth, Muppet Family Christmas, the Fraggle Rock cartoon, the Jim Henson Hour, and the Muppets at Walt Disney World up to Jim's untimely death. Either way, I'm looking forward to it.
Oh god I love the labyrinth that movie rock
Well, most of it did get to the next episode, though Mat saved Jim's death for the start of the episode after as it was the turning point for The Muppets and their future both good and bad.
I'm surprised you never mention Labyrinth in this part! plus it's no surprise the Muppets Take Manhattan was distributed by Tri-Star Pictures! (glad you mentioned Baby Looney Tunes as another younger version of Cartoon Characters in this or not!)
26:21-26:24
Their the same people (Jim - Kermit, Oz- Miss Piggy)
Ah, Muppet Babies
The spin-off that started it all
Dark Crystal has got to be one of my top favorite movies. Yeah, it's dark, but that was part of the fun of it.
10:50-10:55
11:21
Holy sizzle that is a lot of dedication 😮
The first movie Animat will be talking about this project is the Great Muppet Caper. You know what that means?

Horse Person from Tomska: I love ❤️ it 👍
I'm not ready to experience Jim's death all over again...
well you'll have time to brace yourself
That episode haven't been released yet.
Finally, some animation in ANIMATION Lookback! Took you long enough. (Okay, okay, seriously though, good episode as always Mat.)
Part 4 of Animation Lookback: The Muppets is coming up ⬆️ next.
Stock footage is routed in Muppet Babies history. Isn't it? Just like Thomas & Friends, and Season 7 of that series has the biggest counts for use of stock footage. And what do you know, both shows premiered the same year. (In two separate countries.)
Great Muppet Capper was my introduction to The Muppets.
I watched that vhs a lot.😅
35:30 to 35:40 - Toei animation, the same studio behind Dragon Ball Z, One piece, Digimon, the Pretty Cure franchise, and is infamous for giving poor treatment to artists to animators (huge issue in all animation studios in Japan) and giving out copy right claims to many content video makers. In short, it brings the best and worst out of the public.
Summer was originally going to be a lamb named Bobbie Baa Baa, but a penguin makes more sense.
Actually, the characters of Fraggle Rock are consindered to be Muppets. In fact, the opening subtitle for Fraggle Rock say "With Jim Henson's The Muppets". Sprocket would even cameo in The Muppet's Christmas Carol and the Fraggles appeared in A Muppet Family Christmas and the 25 Anniversary special of The Muppets.
Ben Diskin was also on Codename: Kids Next Door. You know that. Right?
Get hyped!
As of 2022, The Muppets Take Manhattan, Kermit's Swamp Years, and Muppets From Space are the only Muppet films that distribution rights are still with Sony rather than Disney. Not counting of course the ones not featuring Kermit and the gang or Sesame Street characters.
Yeah, I’ve always wondered why Disney didn’t grab the rights to the 3 like The Muppet Movie and The Great Muppet Caper?
Elmo in Grouchland is also owned by Sony
@animationentertainment7149 Yeah but the Sesame Street characters wasn't included with the Muppets and Disney deal.
@@stephenholloway6893 Yeah, I knew that
And thus everyone else Is *still* conutine their own trend of making babies/children of other beloved (and not most beloved) charterers from Baby Yoda, Baby Peanut, Baby Sonic, Total Dramarama, Madagascar, and more!
Well this part was definitely worth the wait! Keep up the good work 👍
Guys if that is THE Brian Froud let’s be thankful he voices Harold in total drama
Wait... Wait wait wait. Toei Animation. AS IN DRAGON BALL Toei Animation?! That Company... worked with Marvel... to make Muppet Babies??
44:50 "or so they say..."
We'll see what happens when Disney acquires The Muppets rights from Jim Henson.
But the sad part is that...
[SPOILERS]
I don't have time to spoil anything about this. So I have to save it for the next part of Animation Lookback: The Muppets.
I think I can already guess
@@charliesoldhouse4667
Save it.
I had no idea that Miss Piggy was a full body costume while she was diving.
Well I did notice her full body when she's riding a motorcycle.
@@alexor1327 Ok, I meant the truck. I knew about the motorcycle. I read that the suit performer was also inside the full body version of Jen.
Next time, something will happen that will change everything about the Muppets forever...
RIP
The cgi version of Muppet Babies aired on Disney Junior from March 2018 to February 2022 (earlier this year).
17:32-18:26
Let the man create people
Muppet Babies was my introduction 2 The Muppets.
43:37
You forgot the Web series that came out after the end of the show that featured them as puppets again
Imagine the movies The Muppets Babies would have their imaginary adventures in if the original series kept going like SpongeBob or The Simpsons such as The Lord of the Rings, The Avengers, IT (2017) (I mean I’m sure the Muppet Babies had crossovers into horror movies before), Jurassic Park/World, Titanic, The Matrix, Casino Royale (2006), Life of Pi, Gravity, Pirates of the Caribbean, Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, any of the X-Men films and Avatar.
Also, I know the next part is going to end sadly like part 4 of Animation Lookback: The History of Walt Disney Animation Studios+. Get your tissues ready, everyone.
🤧
I cannot wait for part four
The Great Muppet Caper was actually my first exposure to Kermit and his Muppet Show friends' group. ^^
Good old muppets. Welcome back to part 2 Of Animation look back of the Muppets! Hope you guys enjoy this!
Part 3
Can anyone tell me why a baseball diamond was being held in a country whose favorite pastimes are Rugby and Cricket? LOL! 🤪
A bit of history for those that don't know: Marvel Productions was formerly DePatie-Freleng Enterprises, best known for The Pink Panther, many of the Dr. Seuss specials, and for doing the lightsaber effects for the original Star Wars. Basically, what had happened was Depatie & Freleng's partnership had fallen apart, and in 1981, their company was purchased by Marvel's then-parent company, Cadence Industries (though Depatie did transition and became the head of the company for three years).
Adding to that fact, the last two animated specials that Depatie and Freleng finished before/during the Marvel transition were the _Pink Panther: Pink at First Sight_ and Dr Seuss' _The Grinch Grinches the Cat in the Hat_
11:40
Jim Henson cameo
Ms piggy is dazzling 🐷🐷✨✨💗💖💖💕💗💓💓💕💗✨✨✨
I remember this movie and it's on Disney plus.
Is it The Great Muppet Caper?
Marvel help with the….muppet babies…
“What a twist.”
You thought the prequel and Disney era of Star Wars was bad, bruh! Star Wars always had bad eggs since day one. The holidays special, the two Ewok movies, Mark Hamill's guest appearance on the Muppet show, not to mention the Droids also appeared on an episode of Sesame Street way back then. Yeah, go search it up. The fact that this was the early 80s and with how different movies were back then, through my gen z perspective, it just looks more cringe to see Leia and Luke do musical sing alongs. It makes Hayden Christensen's performance in the prequels a lot better and easier to look at compared to what came out before in my opinion.
When are You gonna talk about The Muppets on Nickelodeon and Noggin?❤️📺🎶👍🏻
36:38 rip
26:58
If it’s from a deleted scene then it’s not.
If it’s in a comic book adaptation then let it be in it’s own universe.
(That’s how I see it. Unless they say otherwise.)
Getting off topic but I’m surprised there was not Crazy Cartoon Cast episode this week
26:50 I didn't know the Warner siblings from "Animaniacs" were invited to Kermit & Piggy's wedding (because I see the top of Yakko's head & ears peeking out at the last panel).😐
Hope there was extra food at the party (because of Wakko's appetite), and Dot didn't got into a fight with Miss Piggy over Kermit.😅
Joe Raposo wrote the songs for The Great Muppet Caper? No wonder I thought the movie felt a lot like Follow That Bird!
Except Joe didn’t work on Follow That Bird, even though Joe was back with the Sesame Street team at the time. The music for the film was done by Van Dyke Parks and Lennie Niehaus and some of the songs were done by Jeff Moss. The Great Muppet Caper was the only Muppet movie Joe Raposo composed the music for. Jeff Moss technically did 2 with Follow That Bird and The Muppets Take Manhattan
10:04-10:14

I like the 2018 muppet babies too but they look like toddlers
I'm curious why Rizzo never appeared in the original Muppet Babies but did in the new one
I guess it was before Rizzo became more prominent and popular.
Do you guys think He’ll talk about fraggle rock in part 4?
Fraggle Rock is a Muppet series.
Must be a nightmare to show the original Muppet babies again.
