I watch all your video's religiously lol!! I see a trend of the vast majority being Northern based. I would love to see the difference between North and south strategies as I live in North Carolina. I'm sure both regions will not support the same habitat structures to some degree. I thoroughly love the thought and the detailed planning that goes into every step and detail that goes into Whitetail Habitat growth. In NC we are not known to have tremendously big whitetail bucks other than the rare occasion. Maybe if I have not already missed it a video which overlooks picking your whitetail strategy for your land based on your property. I find that this is a very situational strategy seeing how diverse land can be. There are no other content creators as detailed and as informed as yourself for the southeast or south. Thank you for all you do!!

Just planted buckwheat for the first time, and it’s on a new plot. Wish me luck. Oh, and you may be influencing more people than you know. I went into the farmers co-op and asked for buckwheat, the guy said “I don’t know what’s going on this year, but we have sold about 3x the normal amount of buckwheat so far this year. Everyone keeps coming in asking for buckwheat.” I’m in Alabama.

I know what you mean about shorting yourself with your own great advice! Same thing happening with John Comp and his switchgrass. Hi Jeff, do you notice any effect on germination and growth of the rye when seeded into a rolled buckwheat cover? Buckwheat is one of those plants that releases chemicals in the ground to stop other plants from germinating. It's why it's usually such a clean crop, but I always read that you have to destroy it one month before seeding to allow that chemical to stop having effect.
I'd like to try this in organic farming and buckwheat seems to die easily when rolled without glypho, so seed buckwheat after the summer crop and roll it in the autumn while spraying seed into it (wheat).
Inversely it also seems possible from you video to seed buckwheat as a cash crop into rolled rye.
The difficulty in organic farming is that we have no chemical backup, the cover crops need to be absolutely clean.

Most of the time, 2,4-D breaks down in soil so that half of the original amount is gone in 1-14 days. This breakdown time is called the "half-life" of the pesticide. One form of 2,4-D, the butoxyethyl ester, had a much longer half-life in aquatic sediment of 186 days.

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  5 місяців тому

You can always do it without chemicals. You just suffer lower volume in your plots, poor attraction per acre, significantly increased risk of erosion, higher field cost and waste...all while using much more expensive equipment.
The trick isn't "no chemical or chemical". Instead, wisdom comes from being smart. Applying true balance with resources. There are many no chemical folks out there using extremely dumb, impressive practices...just to say they don't use chemicals. We need to rise above that, which is what we do...

It does work best if there is a good rain shortly afterwards. Especially if you have a lot of turkeys or doves who will dine on the seeds that don't get pushed into the soil. However, one year, I broadcast and cultipacked on my sandy SC soil and then got 3" of rain over the next 24 hours and all my seed washed downhill (it was only a slight slope, but enough that the runoff wiped out most of my seeding). Had to replant and the buckwheat in lower portion of the field that ended up with about a 1000 #/acre rate all died because the seeds germinated and choked each other out. Sometimes you just can't win.

In the 2020 Ultimate No Till Food Plot Prep video at 1:59 you say " ... spray, then till ..." when this was to be a No-Till plot. I'm confused. Did I miss something? I'm referring back to 2020 because that's where I started using your Ultimate No-Till method -- until the weather didn't cooperate here in northwestern Minnesota and socked us with serious drought. I've created a 2 acre food plot 2636 feet long by 30 feet wide following the contours of the land, with several half acre plots branching off of it, over semi-wooded 160 acres, adjacent to two decent wetlands and adjoining a 600 acre habitat of a neighbor's; with huge farm fields on the other three sides. Should be a good spot if I can incorporate your videos. I've recommended your website to several of my friends and family. Please advise.

Also what are the requirements for lime and fertilizer in this rotation application, and what settings for the 2750 spreader for this part of the process?

I have followed your Rye-Buckwheat-Summer crop method for two years, but I have very sandy soil (located in the Sandhill area of South Carolina) with poor CEC numbers, so my soil tests (done BEFORE each crop planting) tell me each time that I have to add potassium, phosphorous, calcium and magnesium. Although it does not smash down like buckwheat, what about using sunn hemp as my cover crop between the Winter rye and my iron clay cowpeas/lablab crop to help bring up those minerals from deeper in my soil? This is from Hancock Seed Company website: "Sunn hemp is a tropical legume whose claim to fame is that, 60 days from planting, it is typically over six feet tall, adds 120 pounds of Nitrogen to the soil, 10 pounds of residual Phosphorus and 80 pounds of residual Potash transfers from the subsoil to the topsoil, supplies four tons of organic matter, is a great soil builder, as well as increasing drought tolerance and yield and cash value of the next crop. During its first 60 days, sunn hemp mines 38 lbs. of Calcium, 20 lbs. of Sulfur, and 40 lbs. of Magnesium to the surface soil. It also brings up trace nutrients that are necessary for plant growth"

We are doing 0.5 to 1 acre food plot. Thanks for all you do! My wife and I both hunt and are big fans!

I was watching this, great info btw. I have a question. I want to plant plots in my field this year but there are a few decent-sized areas of thorny bramble. Would I affect my buckwheat plant this summer if I use a weed killer with Triclopyr in it to kill the weeds and bramble?

I am converting a couple plots from tilled to no till. One is a clay type soil that gets a hard crust on top. Both plots were overseeded in septmber with winter rye. Which is about knee high know. I live in northwestern minnesota. If i spray it now with glyphosate. And over seed them with buckwheat ,will it grow on harder clay soil. The other plot has a better topsoil ,so not worried so much about that one.

Jeff, couldn’t you leave the rye standing until end of summer, then put your fall food plot seed down, spray and crimp, and skip the buckwheat?

last fall we did half brassicas and half rye and peas. We are in Kansas 1 acre plot. the rye is 8" tall we are wanting to spread in buckwheat. Do we spread buckwheat then roll the rye and spray glyphosate? this is early May

Jeff....great info again. I'll try the cultipacking BEFORE planting my brassica this year, and cultipack AFTER planting my peas, beans and oats this year. It should make it a lot easier. I'll be planting my buckwheat the first week of June tied in with a rain. Thanks again, Bob

Jeff, an idea I have for a video is could you suggest the earthway spreader settings you use for the different crop blends? I picked up on 1.3 for the brassicas you use in another video. Buckwheat, brassicas, rye, etc. I know there are some settings on the sticker on the bottom part of the unit but it doesn’t cover everything we may be using for our plots. I’m new to using one and with your expertise I could save time and money instead of using the “guess and check” method. Thanks a ton for all your content! You are the man!

Jeff, one more quick thing. I've done your ultimate no-till process for a number of years as I said in the previous comment. My question is what are your thoughts on me no till planting my beans and winter peas through the buckwheat. ... I now have a no-till planter. Thanks again

  • @davidtpierce

Jeff, quick question. I've been doing the buckwheat thing for a number of years.... This year I have a unusual situation though. I've always normally planted my buckwheat somewhere between June 3rd and 5th and have had great results to have everything ready for first week of August annual plots. However this year I will be out of town working and have two choices. Plant my buckwheat this coming Saturday or Sunday.... The 29th or 30th of May. Or wait until the weekend of June 12th. Which I think is probably a little late. What do you think and which dates would you choose. Thanks for your help Jeff I greatly appreciate it.

    Two questions:
1.can you seed crimson clover with the buckwheat, using the buckwheat as a nurse crop and give the clover a chance to head a head start for the fall?
    2. Can you spread lime after spreading buckwheat seed? Or do you work above the lime caking and preventing the buckwheat from germinating.
    Thanks

Got my plots ready per you methodologies- it’s late May east central Alabama - bottomland mostly sandy soil but I soil test and limed last year and applied Plot mix - my problem is we’ve hit a drought spell - very hot and dry - no rain in forecast for the next 10 days - how long can I wait before putting out my buckwheat ? Don’t want to seed with ling dry period.

    • @savagehunter3739

You probably want to terminate the buckwheat in about 60 days before it starts dropping seed. So, work backwards from when you want to plant your "money crop" and see how late you can wait. I have extremely sandy soil (in the Sandhills area of SC), so I can sympathize with you, but found that 50-60 days after planting gave me enough height on the buckwheat to gain the cover effect you want, but still able to terminate it before it dropped its seeds. Another caution about leaving it on the ground too long before germination is that the birds might eat a lot of the seeds. The seeds themselves won't be hurt, what would be worse is to have a rain, then germinate THEN a long dry spell.

Hello Jeff, thanks again for another great video and taking the time to explain things, the science & logic behind this method. Really appreciate what u put into these videos & the knowledge to b gained!
This will b our first year trying this out with Buckwheat. Checking to see what prices are in your area? I thought I remembered you mentioning Buckwheat being very affordable/reasonable. I was a little surprised at my local farm elevator here in Central Michigan at $49 per 50pd bag? They've always been very reasonable on everything else, but this seems pricey to me. Just checking to see if this is the going rate these days, thanks!

I'm in Wyoming, doing this for the first time this year too. Btw, thanks for the refresher. My soil test requires that I fertilize my sandy soil for my winter rye grain. I'm wondering if I need to fertilize the same for the buckwheat smother crop.

I would kill it and it has been plenty warm in KY for a while now at least to plant buckwheat. BuT, I would wait until early to mid June in your area to plant it.
I like to kill it before it gets too high...usually around 2-3'. You can kill it now...plant later. Make sure not to mow tho, it will develop too thick a thatch base and will not allow seed to get to the soil. Instead just spray....and then plant into by broadcasting.
