Angiomyolipomas are the most common benign tumour of the kidney. Although regarded as benign, angiomyolipomas may grow such that kidney function is impaired or the blood vessels may dilate and burst, leading to bleeding.
Angiomyolipomas are strongly associated with the genetic disease Tuberous Sclerosis, in which most individuals have several Angiomyolipomas affecting both kidneys. They are also commonly found in women with the rare lung disease lymphangioleiomyomatosis. Angiomyolipomas are less commonly found in the liver and rarely in other organs. Whether associated with these diseases or sporadic, Angiomyolipomas are caused by mutations in either the TSC1 or TSC2 genes, which govern cell growth and proliferation. They are composed of blood vessels, smooth muscle cells, and fat cells.
Large Angiomyolipomas can be treated with embolisation. Drug therapy for Angiomyolipomas is at the research stage. The Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance has published guidelines on diagnosis, surveillance, and management.[1] Most people with benign Angiomyolipomas do not show signs or have symptoms. However, some people can have symptoms If the dilated blood vessels in an Angiomyolipoma rupture, this is called a retroperitoneal hemorrhage. This can cause pain in the back, nausea and vomiting. Some long-term effects are anemia, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease. Up to 20% of patients who present symptoms, and are brought into the emergency department, are in shock.[3]

Thank you for sharing the info. There is no cure for this disease and Everolimus can't cure it it will help stop the growth of the tumour with lot of side effect and its also very expensive table. Embolization can only be done if there is major internal bleeding. aren't there any studies or future medication on this .. please advise. thanks

@@emansam1847 yes surely will share the reletive studies ,videos whatever details I'll get across.however you should get regular checkups and nephrology consulting every 6 months to one year just to avoid any situation.also don't lift heavy weight which can put pressure on your kidney and the AML can rupture. Protein, starchy food, potesium , Salt needs to be controlled. I'm also doing a homeopathic treatment just started few months back. Once I get the report I'll share the details.plz shar your contact info for PM. thanks

Do AML’s ever disappear on their own? I was diagnosed with a 2 cm in my R kidney but years later they scanned my R kidney and did not mention it but said I had a 1 cm in my L kidney.

I was diagnosed with an angiomyolipoma on my left kidney in 2008, then one on my right kidney in 2016. I was monitored via ultrasounds and meeting Consultant 6 monthly, then annually, and finally bi-annually. Received a letter from him in January 2020 opening lines of which began with "how much longer do we continue monitoring these things?" I was a bit taken aback at the curtness of his approach, haven't been monitored since and feel that I am an inconvenience to him. He shoud remember that I am the patient. I have no idea how these tumours are progressing. I am suffering with bad fluid retention and wonder if there is any connection.
Recently diagnosed with Lipo-Lymphoedema. Whilst at GP's he asked when my AML's were last ultrasounded. I told him I had been discharged in January 2020 but thought they should have continued monitoring me. Had to wait 5 months for an ultrasound appointment to come through in October 2023 after which GP phoned to tell me I now have 4 AML's - 2 on each kidney. Latest ultrasound May 2023 reveals another AML has grown so 5 in total now and awaiting an urgent referral appointment to see Specialist as first ne has grown to 4cm x 3 xm by 2.5 cms.
Could there be a connection between Lipoedema and angiomyolipomas? Lipomas are often mentioned in Lipoedema articles. Just curious.

Please get another doctor. I had it removed 3 weeks ago. Yesterday I got my results and learned this can bleed out and can lead to another cancer. Had he done a biopsy instead it could have bled out...leaving it to cause a lot of harm including a fatal outcome. since biopsies for this is invasive, I opted for him to take it out which is what he recommended anyway.
Please switch doctors. I'm thankful for mine. He did tell me I will have CTs and then ultrasounds for life. If yours feels put out or can't keep a bedside manner that makes you feel comfortable, then please don't suffer with them. It won't be any better if something were to arise.
These have to be monitored. My doctor told me they can be very harmful. You also need to know they can grow in many other areas. Unlike renal cell carcinoma ...this has more of a chance to come back to my kidney and/or both kidneys (he kept part of my left kidney).
