I bought a Chinese knock off it too :D but it happens a ton with kickstarter companies that manufacturer in China, First one I recall was the Ostrich Pillow, The Kickstarter wanted $90 for it, but the perfect Chinese knock offs were $30. It's really the team not asking for the molds to be destroyed/returned once production has finished. I highly suspect the Spectrum Vega Plus will have a ton of knock offs made by the end of the year.
Yeah, I can't understand why they didn't anticipate the Chinese running with the molds, which again diminishes any sympathy I should have for them. There must have been one hell of a dispute between them and the manufacturer for the clones to appear so soon though. I wonder why companies don't just make some parts in China and other critical parts elsewhere. I know it would add expense, but at least no one manufacturer is going to have the ability to make their own completed units. With recent drama about the Vega Plus, I'm wondering if it's ever going to come out at all. If the reports are true, you might end up seeing that piece of hardware featured on my channel... if you know what I mean!
I don't think most of the counterfeit fidget cubes are actually made from the original molds, if any of them actually are. Most of them have mistakes that easily give them away, usually with the joystick. The real Fidget Cube's joystick is flush with the cube itself and slides around like a 3DS analog nub, while with the counterfeit ones the joystick usually sticks out and often times the movement is like a regular Dualshock type stick.
I have a real fidget cube from the kickstarter and that is definitely not from the same manufacturer or mold. There are lots of little things about it that are off, but the biggest is the joystick. A real fidget cube has a joystick like the 3DS where it is flush with the surface and slides around rather than tilting. This is a mistake the bootleggers almost always make because they are basing their product off of the kickstarter video and photos and didn't have access to a real fidget cube to take apart and reference. I don't think it's fair to blame Antsy for "not protecting themselves" when anyone could look at a photo an steal their idea. They can't do anything against people selling counterfeit cubes until the patent is approved, and until then it's the wild west.
I have a real fidget cube, it's quite nice and it's helped me stop constantly picking my nails. I've found that the spinny wheel thing is actually my favorite side, it has a little nub to help keep your thumb in place and the sound it makes is nice. I'd highly recommend getting one of these.
Me too! Mine stops me from picking at my skin (when I actually remember to grab it from my bag). My favourite side is the roller ball, it's so satisfying to click it.
I tried one of these bootleg fidget cubes (I have a genuine one for comparison) and it was completely awful. The buttons didn't click, there was no click on the dial of gears, and the spring on the joystick didn't even return it to centre!
CJTheReal mine is the same as in the video it cost me 4 dollars and it makes everythink the original does except the ball doesnt click but everything else works properly i think the owners of the original are mad cause they wastes like 15 or 20 dollar more just cause is the original, and sure there might be bootlegs that dont work properly but if you buy them at a dollar store or in chinese store you can try them open the boxes to see what color is it and they wont tell you anything so yeah you can see wich ones work just fine.
You could "waste $15-20" on real Blu-Ray movies or you could buy a shitty DVD from China Town that was recorded in a movie theater for $3, but that doesn't mean they are an equivalent product. Plus you are enabling thieves when you buy the counterfeit, encouraging that more products will be stolen and replicated for profit in the future, which means creative people are less likely to try and make new things since they won't be able to profit from them.
Mine has three of five buttons clicking and no gear clicking. The thumbstick worked totally fine though. It may have been an official one? Someone else got it for me and there's no obvious branding on the packaging.
I'm pretty sure the "rubbing stone" side has a metal plate in it so that the surface is cool to the touch. It may also give the cube more weight to it.
To be fair, these fidget cubes are good for people with autism. I have one because sometimes i just need to play with something while i'm working, it's a pretty common thing.
It kind of has a sensation to it, because of the way the ball bearings spin. It like, hums or vibrates slightly. Slowlyy rocking it back and forth while its spinning gives a satisfying feeling of slight resistance. It's kind of something you have to feel to understand. I didn't get it until I felt one.
If indie reviews are what you want to see then I think you're going to be VERY happy in the next month or so. I have a new series that you're really going to enjoy. Keep an eye out.
I thought Mr. Stop Drop & Retro lost his mind when I saw "Kickstarter" and "Review" in the same thumbnail and title. Then saw the video, great stuff. I really enjoyed the tear down, even though I was worried you were gonna cut your thumb open lol great stuff man
Someone used one on stage during a show because he kept fidgeting without noticing, and when it was mentioned to the director after the first rehearsal it was used the director said he had no idea. So it can be used discreetly if you wanted.
These cubes are more like the newton cradle or stress balls you'd see in 80's offices and they usually end up in those "mens gadget" sections of the shopping centres.
The bootleg has a joystick, the real one has a circle pad more like that of a 3DS. The real one's ball actually clicks in, most bootlegs don't. The bootlegs are usually slightly bigger than the real ones.
Honestly I don't get why you aren't hitting 100k already. Your content is one of the most entertaining and funniest I've seen on youtube. You had me on the Pilot. I stayed after Flatev.
i certainly not an adhd figeter ~ but i do get what you mean by the "switch" ~ much like a pen ~ on/off/on so quick it gets stuck....becomes satisfaction while on the phone to an indian scanmer
Someone gave me one of these for Christmas and I actually use it all the time. I was surprised at how much I ended up using it. I would just find it in my hand while watching a movie or video.
what if big companies use platforms like Kickstarter to test the demand for a certain product in the market, and then use their existing production facilities to make that product accordingly?
that's an iffy area. On the one hand, I don't have a problem with that model because those projects are usually far less risky towards the backers than any other project. On the other hand, it might be abuse if they're using it as a preorder system they don't have an obligation to deliver on. It's a fine line and has to be taken on a case by case basis but part of running a "big company" is knowing how to read a room and understand if it makes sense to go to Kickstarter and predicting what kind of reaction you'll get.
I would have loved to see an apples-to-apples comparison with a official Fidget Cube so that you could prove your claims that this cube is the exact same as the finished product.
We're supposed to be getting these in at work in a week or so. Can't believe this is an actual product. I guess if it stops people from clicking pens it's cool though.
I (back before they were everywhere) got a decent quality knockoff for 15 and it actually seemed to not have a lot of the issues yours had. I got it for a friend before the .. apocalypse of the fidgeters began and she seemed to like it
it will fidget no more. awesome video man! keep up the awesome work! i love your kickfarted videos :-) also, I agree with you, that must be the real deal, knockoff stuff does not have that mamy details.
Thanks! And I should have shown it but I actually did put it all back together with super glue and without the outer shell and it looked pretty cool! Like a Mad Max fidget cube.
Well where I live we call those 1 Euro stores... They don't sell them there. They aren't popular over here yet. But I've seen one or two people who already own one...
I bought one of the original Fidget Cubes (I have the retro one, with the red buttons) and then I see people who have bootlegs one and I saw "thats fake" and they are like "What! No... I bought it from 7/11, its not fake" and I show them thats its fake. How I tell is 99% of the time, the 5 buttons, they all click. Also the ball hardly moves, and that "glide" things is as stiff as a board. TBH I can look at one and tell its fake. Edit: Also the Breathe thing isn't dented enough.
the "breathe" space is mimicking worrystones which are bullshit when it comes to them actually being medicinal but smoothish stones with a nice mild texture do a lot for relieving stress for some individuals. Feeling the texture over and over helps them relax. It's a type of catharsis.
Thanks for doing this. I recently got a ticket cube, at the time to help me get through some stressful therapy, but I almost bought a cheap one off ebay. (I am poor af and if I could have gotten it for under 10 bucks plus not had to drive to the next city where the closest ones were being sold, I would have.) Then I remembered this video and you saying how unsatisfying the cheap ones were. Wore off the paint already on some sides, but otherwise completely worth the energy, gas money and $10.
I'm running a toy shop in Hong Kong, I sell this around 6$ usd And. I'm gonna say... is quite a lot people buying this.. lol However, we got a new version on this cube, And the feel is better. Sometime can't say china always ''bad'' , it just a option.
I would be interested to see a teardown of an "original" fidget cube to go alongside this teardown; wondering how the internals of those differ from these. I am guessing the "originals" don't have as many broken buttons as this knockoff did, which would make sense after seeing you take it apart -- the important part (the outside tooling) was kept the same or very similar, but the internals they put who knows what just to achieve seemingly similar results. If you get a chance, a recent book you would like is Andrew Huang's "The Hardware Hacker - Adventures in Making and Breaking Hardware". He has extensive experience in the Chinese manufacturing world, and explains and demonstrates what it takes to make products in those Shenzhen factories and with their way of thinking, and how they can go wrong or fall short. So many interesting stories and details in there.
It is an amazing book -- he goes over several examples of how fakes enter the supply chain from legit vendors, how the products evolve because of Chinese cultural approaches to sharing of designs and schematics, and so many other topics. A ton of the products and kickstarters you review on here would make more sense in light of some of his descriptions of how manufacturing actually works over there, which isn't always obvious from you how you would expect based on just looking at a product. Most books are about the "what"; this book is about "how" and "why".
Cute Little toy! But there´s one Thing that would drive me crazy... If i push Buttons i expect something to happen. If i push and click and Switch that damn Thing and nothing happens that would drive me crazy - Haha :)
I've got that exact chinese knock off fidget cube and a ginuine one, and I can assure that they are different in terms of build quality, weight and the analog stick. The knock off even came in the same box as in this video, just different branding/color scheme. So, what's different? The original weighs a little bit more. Not sure how much more, but you can feel the difference. Also the analog stick on the original is more like the joy pad from a Nintendo 3DS, whereas the knock off has a more console controller approach. Oh, and that spinning wheel on the original has a distinct haptic feedback, whereas the knock off just spins around without any feel to it. The overall build quality of the knock off is surpisingly good compared to the one from Antsy Labs, but I prefer the the original Fidget Cube since it feels better and it smells less. (Sorry for the weird english, it isn't my native language :( )
I bought a knockoff fidget cube thats very close to the original. The only real downside was the joystick because even tho it was nice and moved around pretty nicely, the joystick would fall out just by being flipped upside down. My favorite side was the circle bc it moved pretty smoothly and fast.
well.. not saying that I like fidget spinners (i hate them) but some people like fidgeting with pens, some like fidgeting with stress balls, and some people like fidgeting with spinners. Its not the same for everyone
Stuff comes out of the backdoor of pretty much every factory. I've seen 'bootlegs' of everything from guitars to alloy wheels come off the same production lines as the originals, they normally just work extra time making bootlegs, using the original materials, parts and processes, they are pretty much 100% profit.
not really interested in it at the moment, but I'll wait and see. I don't really understand the hype for it when so many other options exist for mapping controls to a standard controller in the PC gaming space.
You know that plastic case you can get to put around pens...those make fun toy The challenge, with one hand, try to detach the two parts, then flip them around only using one hand and reattach it with only one hand. You're not allowed to bump them against anything.
i got one and the worry stone is the best. i have autism and pddnos and some more undiagnosed stuff and this cube really does help. its better than playing with a pen or a eraserall the time at work.
I don't understand, you seemed to really like the idea, the execution and all, but then went on to say that the campaign is predatory (because of that breathing space)? I know it's not exactly contradictory but I wanna still wanna ask how exactly you view the campaign and product, because of this
The "breath" spot isn't for alternative medicine, it is just a version of rubbing a skipping stone. It actually isnt bad if you have a large enough surface, but the one on the cube sucks
I hate how companies will try and vilify an human quirk just to sell us tat. Fidgeting isn't that bad of a trait but now you get dirty looks for doing it and now there are cubes, spinners, toys to hide hit. Honestly its frightening how the company's can play us as badly as they do!
Hey, mate. I have two fake and one real Fidget Cube and there's a significant difference between them. Especially since there are two types of fakes. There's the one you have, which has plastic buttons, the ball doesn't click, and everything is made with like, the cheapest materials as you described. The second type of fake came out shortly after the real ones, which has rubber buttons, an actual working analog stick, clicky ball, and everything works as intended. This one is essentially what a real one feels like.
Those things are a perversion of fingerbox technology. Back in my day we had to drag our supersize fingerbox-cage uphill 30 miles through sleet and snow out into the woods if we wanted to have animals in our fingerbox, now you can just get some little 3-inch piece of plastic oriental witchcraft that bewitches the mind into _thinking_ there's an animal in your fingerbox. It's poison to our young kids' development, it's why pearl harbor happened.
yeah, you're right. I can tell this video wasn't going to be as popular. Those who were looking for 100% review or 100% shitty kickstarter won't be satisfied. I put this in the "hardware reviews" playlist. But you have to change it up and experiment with a channel and I thought it was an interesting item to make a video about. So don't think this is a permanent change, in fact, you'll be happy to know that the next video will be 100% shitty kickstarter... and it's a big one!! see ya then.
hey can you make a video on the rasberry pi and retropie cause I think you might be intrested in that. you like chip (the 9 doller computer) so i think it would make an interesting video.
I got the knock-off cube as well while my wife has the real one. The thumbstick on mine already stopped working and no longer moves smoothly, and one of the five buttons got stuck and no longer clicks. I've only had it for like 3 months too. Meanwhile my wife's cube is still perfect and works just fine. You can really tell the difference in quality. :-/
Yah I think Antsy Labs didn't protect themselves, and a lot of people that helped them was really mad about the delay and that there were bootlegs already up and for cheaper. Especially since when I checked it a couple months ago, there are still some people that didn't get their order (one of them being a superbacker). I really think that Antsy Labs isn't really getting everyone that was interested in it considering they aren't the first ones that show up when searching for them on amazon/google as well. No one will know that Antsy Labs is the one who actually made it unless they were there during the kickstarter.
lately fidget toys have been turning up in my mail and i did not order them i open up my stuff thinking its mine and low and behold its not my stuff its fidget toys :P so i have been going to to the address it was sent to like 2 streets away and giving them back to there owner she's happy to get her stuff back so she can give it to her kids
I think fidget spinners outshined these things. I fidget a lot and thought about getting one. But after see this, I'll stick to pens! Thanks for taking it apart, I love that sorta stuff!
no problem! Really glad you liked it! I still don't get the appeal of a fidget spinner, but as someone who doesn't fidget a lot, maybe it's not for me to get.
Jacob November That's what upset me about this video is that the quality is better on the real ones. if you're going to do a vid like this at least do a comparison.
If the reports are true, you might end up seeing that piece of hardware featured on my channel... if you know what I mean!
gotta love this 1 video a month
space eggs trust me, the next video is worth the wait. Should be up this week.
I don't think Chinese will be deterred by a mould kit being destroyed, they'll make a new one for a few grand just by glancing on the product.
Fidget cubes with more sides? I mean... They wouldn't be cubes...
Fidget Dodecahedron?

I don't think it's fair to blame Antsy for "not protecting themselves" when anyone could look at a photo an steal their idea. They can't do anything against people selling counterfeit cubes until the patent is approved, and until then it's the wild west.

You know, the best "fidget" toy I've found, is actually something pretty much all of us have: a phone.
CheekyGoose o0o0o0o checkmate
Checkmate atheists
A pen is the best to fidget with. I do not own a phone..
I really expected a dick joke here.
I tried one of these bootleg fidget cubes (I have a genuine one for comparison) and it was completely awful. The buttons didn't click, there was no click on the dial of gears, and the spring on the joystick didn't even return it to centre!

@@ImTheKingOfHyrule someone really said "you wouldn't download a car"
I believe the phrase you’re looking for as a synonym for “clickiness” is “tactile feedback”.
If you think the Fidget Cube is dumb, there is one thing called Zen Egg. Yeah, it can get worse. At least the Fidget Cube has a real use.
I'm pretty sure the "rubbing stone" side has a metal plate in it so that the surface is cool to the touch. It may also give the cube more weight to it.
Every time I start to think, "I haven't seen a StopDrop&Retro video in while" Bam! Here you are :)
To be fair, these fidget cubes are good for people with autism. I have one because sometimes i just need to play with something while i'm working, it's a pretty common thing.
I am so close to buying a fidget spinner...unironically. Somehow the fidget cube just gives me more motivation to do it.
I still don't get the appeal of a spinner. It seems more visual than mechanical/touch so I don't get it.
It would be nice if you could talk about some indie games
shitty or not
you give some pretty good points
Deuxor Cl check his IndieBox reviews
If indie reviews are what you want to see then I think you're going to be VERY happy in the next month or so. I have a new series that you're really going to enjoy. Keep an eye out.

StopDrop&Retro *next month*
idubbbz stopped doing his Kickstarter Crap so now your channel is gonna have to replace him, congratulations, I'm here for support.
I thought Mr. Stop Drop & Retro lost his mind when I saw "Kickstarter" and "Review" in the same thumbnail and title. Then saw the video, great stuff. I really enjoyed the tear down, even though I was worried you were gonna cut your thumb open lol great stuff man
first thing I think of after you tore that down is "hey there are some pieces there that would be perfect for some prop ideas I have"
Someone used one on stage during a show because he kept fidgeting without noticing, and when it was mentioned to the director after the first rehearsal it was used the director said he had no idea. So it can be used discreetly if you wanted.
I backed this project and received 2 of them. I think I played with it for about an hour and I haven't touched it since
that campaign hype is real, man
Now it's a 3D puzzle. Time for a Kickstarter!
hahaha, that's good
Nice the fidget cube comes with a free fidget swastika
how did I not realize that?
I would love to bring a swastika shaped fidget spinner... Why cant I have a 3D printer...
Utter Rubbish I don't get it....
Based and cool image, I subscribed.
Im surprised they used actual momentary switches for the buttons.
These cubes are more like the newton cradle or stress balls you'd see in 80's offices and they usually end up in those "mens gadget" sections of the shopping centres.

Hey, I'm glad to see a new video, man 👍
It's been long enough! Yea, I need to work on that but should have a smoother upload schedule soon.

eh, I ain't paying for that crap
I fricking love your kickstarter videos
THE OLD MAGICIAN'S BACK, YES!
You guys asked for the Magician, so Magician is what you shall receive :)
We're supposed to be getting these in at work in a week or so. Can't believe this is an actual product. I guess if it stops people from clicking pens it's cool though.
Something that cosmetically and mechanically simple would be relatively easy to clone or make accurate knock-offs of.
I (back before they were everywhere) got a decent quality knockoff for 15 and it actually seemed to not have a lot of the issues yours had. I got it for a friend before the .. apocalypse of the fidgeters began and she seemed to like it

Wow those are real electrical switches in there. Amazeballs. I have just bought one from ae. Huge value for the money
I bought one of those spinners for the meme... Turns out it won't ship until next month ;-; I fail at memes
Did the definition of meme change when I was asleep?
Well it has become a meme because of it's sudden popularity even though it's useless...
You could have just bought one at a dollar store, lol
Well where I live we call those 1 Euro stores... They don't sell them there. They aren't popular over here yet. But I've seen one or two people who already own one...
Darn, meanwhile here at Spain every euro store is flooded with spinners

Oh, and that spinning wheel on the original has a distinct haptic feedback, whereas the knock off just spins around without any feel to it. The overall build quality of the knock off is surpisingly good compared to the one from Antsy Labs, but I prefer the the original Fidget Cube since it feels better and it smells less.
(Sorry for the weird english, it isn't my native language :( )
12:03 those are momentary switches. It's what they use in electronics
I bought a knockoff fidget cube thats very close to the original. The only real downside was the joystick because even tho it was nice and moved around pretty nicely, the joystick would fall out just by being flipped upside down. My favorite side was the circle bc it moved pretty smoothly and fast.
fidget cubes are reasonable because people have a lot problems with fidgeting! But fidget spinners DOES NOT HELP AT ALL!
well.. not saying that I like fidget spinners (i hate them) but some people like fidgeting with pens, some like fidgeting with stress balls, and some people like fidgeting with spinners. Its not the same for everyone
CookPiggy fidget spinners are just toys
so that means that fidget cubes aren't toys?
CookPiggy not like fidget fucking pieces of crap spinners
these actually help
Murunbat it helps me a bit
Apparently the build quality, and the quality of all the fidget thingies, is much better on the real one.
seen these things everywhere now. guess this video was before the spinner thing too?
The terms you were looking for were actuation force and haptic feedback.
Stuff comes out of the backdoor of pretty much every factory. I've seen 'bootlegs' of everything from guitars to alloy wheels come off the same production lines as the originals, they normally just work extra time making bootlegs, using the original materials, parts and processes, they are pretty much 100% profit.
yep. I'm pretty sure it's an open secret in china.
What do you think about the All Controller?
not really interested in it at the moment, but I'll wait and see. I don't really understand the hype for it when so many other options exist for mapping controls to a standard controller in the PC gaming space.
But...don't the cube help to keep us anxious, instead of control anxiety?
You know that plastic case you can get to put around pens...those make fun toy
The challenge, with one hand, try to detach the two parts, then flip them around only using one hand and reattach it with only one hand. You're not allowed to bump them against anything.
when you tried opening the fidget cube I was super worried you'd cut yourself lol
i got one and the worry stone is the best. i have autism and pddnos and some more undiagnosed stuff and this cube really does help. its better than playing with a pen or a eraserall the time at work.
heh. Glad to see the magician is back.
Hey gamerstek is going to release a handheld that will play games in 1080p and through HDMI port on the handheld it will release this fall
Heh, that box has the same blocky texture design on it as those Chinese fidget spinners every store is (still) selling
I don't understand, you seemed to really like the idea, the execution and all, but then went on to say that the campaign is predatory (because of that breathing space)? I know it's not exactly contradictory but I wanna still wanna ask how exactly you view the campaign and product, because of this
Hello StopDrop&Retro. Today I'll be watching your video
Hi Sithhy, I'm responding.
I didn't know that! Thanks!
You can get the official fidget cubes from target for 10 bucks now.
when children see fidget toys they feel *lust*
Channel that fidgeting into something useful. Sleight of hand and pen tricks and shit.
Or shit, just build yourself a fingerbox if you're so determined to do useless shit.
I want one of those Japanese digital ones!
I liked the video, but I prefer your videos about shitty Kickstarter and Indigogo campaigns that don't make it.
yeah, you're right.
1:33 “I mean, only a goddamn moron would buy this piece of shi- and here it is!” lol
I like the ORIGINAL anti fidget toy, it was called upbringing and was available in installments of "stop fidgeting" from my parents.
I’ve got one, suede it so much I’ve rubbed the paint of I’ll sit there for hours playing with it it’s pretty good
I got the knock-off cube as well while my wife has the real one.
No one will know that Antsy Labs is the one who actually made it unless they were there during the kickstarter.
lately fidget toys have been turning up in my mail and i did not order them i open up my stuff thinking its mine and low and behold its not my stuff its fidget toys :P so i have been
going to to the address it was sent to like 2 streets away and giving them back to there owner she's happy to get her stuff back so she can give it to her kids
But will it blend?
Love the videos!
Thanks!
It doesn't summon the cenobites when fidgeted with. I'm disappointed.
I got that reference! ;)
You never went over how the breathe side works
"Yeah I couldnt put it together, so I fucking broke it in half" is what you shouldve said when you broke the switch
I'm fond of fidget cubes tbh they help me focus
Neat but definitely not og. The are quite a few subtle differences between this and what antsy is peddling.
Good and funny video. No wonder the market has been flooded with these fidget cubes. Leave it up to China.
Hiss, remember me?
SargentSlash yeeehisssssssssss
This is the real fidget cube
This cube had fidgeted away.
Why treat your anxiety when you can just give into it and buy a stupid cube to fidget yourself away.
Hey I found on the Walmart site I found that the original fidget cubes online
I've actually been using a fidget cube and I like it
*bootleg* *fidget* *cube*
Our world really is losing its touch
and watching this video and playing with my real fidgit cube and fidgit spinner. ohhhh yeah.
That shit for over 6 million dollars in pledges. Wha am i doing with my life.
Catwow not making stupid stuff lol I think that's the secret nowadays
god i love you and what you do
Review other fidged cubes!
You can tell it like isn't real by the joystick. The official one is much more flush to the face.
Jacob November That's what upset me about this video is that the quality is better on the real ones. if you're going to do a vid like this at least do a comparison.
