I did my college senior project involving ultrasound phased array beamforming. Absolutely not an expert. The humming may have come from the shoddy filters generating the array or harmonics somewhere else in the system and not the frequency used. All ultrasonic actuators emit an audible hum, this hum is a harmonic. There are highly directional ultrasonic speakers that take advantage of this harmonic property to make audible sound at a normal audio level (and absolutely screaming at ultrasonic levels) And also why didn't they make a full box with actuators in all directions???
Open field beamforming is largely a solved problem, where at the far end, the wave just dissipates into the distance and doesn't come back to haunt you. You can watch Bitluni's vid where he makes a sonar scanner using beamforming really cheap transducers for example, like literally a weekend project, the guy is far from particularly bright, he throws it together and it just... mostly kinda works. The nature of things is on your side, look at newest Hyugens Optics video where he observes and explains how the ripples from the fountain, seemingly chaotic near the source, congeal into a relatively neat wavefront at far field. Closed box isn't, and if you combine 5 of these transducer arrays that work, well you're just gonna break it, you have all these reflections off the boundary where you have another transducer array to contend with, and you're not just trying to create a pattern of ripples in a pond by wiggling the borders that has sort of standing wave behaviour with peaks and troughs at particular points, you also have a difficult to predict hand interfering with the whole thing. It's difficult enough in 2D, but i don't think it's solvable in 3D at all. I don't think it can be done. At that point you should be considering air jet actuators instead, and that's just a topic, let's put it this way, the patent mentioned in the video is spot on, on why this has not exactly been a path that ever lead to a commercial product. On the plus side, if you do want to do any sort of micro thrusters, there's several companies in Ukraine of all places with requisite expertise, LAJP and SETS and a few others, you won't find that anywhere else.
