I've owned lots of Cold Steels knives and imo they are dollar for dollar the best deal you can get if you compare them to similar styles of knives. I did have one I wasn't happy with, the Spartan. I was carving a cedar walking stick and a piece a little bigger around than the diameter of cigarette broke off. I was going to send it to them but before I got around to it my home was broken into and my blade collection was stolen. I imagine they would have replaced it but I can't say for sure. I did break the blade of one of their kukri knives too but I was pounding on it riving some wood so it was basically knife abuse. I've really abused a lot of their stuff and besides those two times I've never had one fail in any way. I'm glad knife abuse isn't against the law cause I'd probably be doing life by now. :) I have broken a lot of knives and that's partly why I have so much respect for Cold Steels blades. I really like Moras budget priced knives but personally I think there's better choices than their expensive stuff. I'm sure it's first rate from all the reviews I've seen about it. I'm just not into that style of knife to be honest. Like your videos, they are interesting.
Hildolfr Draugadrottin Me too. I’ve had plenty of different knives and Cold Steel is the best ‘bang-for- buck’ by far. The Lawman is perhaps the finest all-rounder pocket knife. Big enough but not too big bulky or heavy. Slicey- mine is a hollow grind in XHP), great steel and tough lock. All my Cold Steels have been excellent- even the ‘budget’ models.
That is one of the best knives I've ever had, I use it constantly and I'm not even a Spyderco fan at all. I know they are a good company and have a solid history but the aesthetics on most are just not my thing, but this model is quite different and after winning it in a contest I must say it is a superior piece in every way.
Love the American Lawman and Code 4. Excellent knives at an extremely reasonable price. Never been a big fixed blade person, so I've never felt the need to upgrade, but I do have two mora's (companion and heavy duty) and they're ridiculous for what they cost.
I emailed Mora when everyone was crying about the micro bevels on the Garberg. They emailed back saying all their knives apart from the carving knives have micro bevels. They're just harder to seen on the knives that don't have flat spines, as no finishing steps are skipped on those knives. But they are there... To get the flat spine on Garberg, bushcraft black etc they said they just skip a final finishing stage which results in the micro bevels being more noticeable.
I”be got the American Lawman, CTS XHP, the black hollow grind. Awesome knife. I love it. So much I bought a second one and keep it in a drawer, just to have a spare for the future.
Bought one six months ago and it's been fantastic. I don't have the same gripes that others do about the handle being thin and the sheath being difficult . Just a lovely knife, especially for the price.
100% agree on the Mora Bushcraft, and am glad to see it stands the test of time with legitimate UA-camrs especially since I already spent the money. You really can't go wrong with Mora in general. I found that people who have larger hands like the Garberg handle a bit better. With medium sized hands the Bushcraft's handle fits like a glove, and I can't believe you get that handle material at such a lower price in the states where the Garberg is only $100 at full price. TWO hundred gee-F-in-whiz! Love your thorough testing and organization especially in your steel comparison videos! All the best until the next!
Pete, thanks so much for keeping the content rolling in this crazy time man. Keeping me sane. Really appreciate that from one of my favorite YTrs! Stay well.
In respect to the Mora, I bought a bunch of the cheap Hultifors GK Heavy Duty knives (much the same as the Mora Black) last year to send out as Chrissie presents. They're still sitting here at home...waiting. The people I was going to send them to aren't knife people but they like going camping, which creates a problem. The GKs are carbon steel, so if they're not cleaned and oiled regularly, they'll rust. Non-knife folk generally don't understand the importance of that methinks. Soooo, I have a few No12 Opinels in stainless that might serve them better. What do you folks think?
I don't have a Spydiechef, but I do have the other 3, including the BDZ1 Strongarm, and I agree. I love them all. I have both the Garberg and the Black, and I like the Black better. Enough so that I have 2 of them. The handle is much more comfortable to me, and I like that the edge goes all the way to the handle, unlike the Garberg. I've beat the hell out of it, and the 3/4 tang has held up just fine for me.
I bought a cold steel master hunter many years ago. I have used it extensively for many tasks.. including taping it to a length of bamboo to cut the top jaw rope off a 4m croc in Broome .. the croc actually bit the handle.. then just lay there.. I had to come back an hr later hoping my knife wasn't eaten.. and luckily. . He didn't. No major damage was done .. just a divet where his tooth grabbed the handle... I have recently put a wicked edge on it.. and its become my favourite again.. strong, durable, and good edge retention. 👍
daAnder71 The discerning gentleman needs one, of course. :) Kidding aside, it’s a clean looking design that stands out from the other tactical CS folders. Do you have one already?
Pete thanks so much for the extra videos man it has been an awesome distraction. I've always looked forward to your content. This has been a treat with everything else going on.
Have the Bushcraft Black, Strongarm and Spydiechef. Love all three of them. Also have the Garberg and prefer it over the Bushcraft Black, just a shame it cost so much here in Australia. Also got to say that Mora's customer service and support is absolutely top notch.
I'm have the same opinion about Cold Steel. Been a teenage dream for years and now that I can afford to buy some of them, I can't seem to stop xD. A quick question about the bushcraft black: in america, you can get it for about $40, and the companion HD for about $20. What does the bushcraft black have that the companion HD doesn't have? I can sharpen the spine on the companion for firesteels. Sure the blade coating is added rust protection, but is it really worth double the price? I guess the bushcraft black also has a micro bevel, but I still don't see how the price is increased. Do they use different steels maybe?
I agree with what you've said. Though I'm not going to downgrade and get a s35vn American Lawman. Xhp or bust. The s35vn doesn't cut nearly as much. And yea that drift is just not good in comparison to so many knives. It's funny how nick shabzz called it a gem. The concept is a gem. The steel is a gem, the thin blade a gem.. But that's where it ends.
People were having problems out of their Cold Steel knives in 3V,I hope they’ve got all that straightened out by now because I really want the SRK and Recon Tanto in 3V,not to mention they are pretty low priced for knives in 3V,especially for knives of their size (the SRK has a 6” blade length with a full tang and the Recon Tanto has a 7” blade length with a full tang..they are quite big pieces of steel)..as far as the sharpest knives out of the box,for me would have to be Spyderco..I haven’t had a lot of experience with Cold Steel, the only knife I’ve bought from them was the Recon Tanto in SK5 Carbon steel, which is pretty awesome..especially for a knife that was under $40.their secure x sheaths are pretty awesome too
Been wanting the Strongarm, still have the Drop Forged Hunter, love the grind so much. Just bought the Spidychef and loving it, liking that QuietCarry butthe budget doesn't reach that far. Thanks for the reviews
In spite of not owning any of these knives or expect to in the foreseeable future I still watch and enjoy your videos, well maybe the Spydiechef has a chance if I don't have to chase it down or pay a premium on the secondary market. Thanks
In my mind, an interesting comparison to the Gerber Strongarm would be the Cold Steel SRK in sk5 steel. In terms of your experience with cold steel, gerber, and these steels, how would you ompare them?
You should deffinetly have affiliateinks Pete, thanks to your videos over the years I've bought: spydiechef, lawman, advocate (regretted that one ;)) manix 2, f1 and my very own fat cat hell bent on world domination
Phirst! EDIT: do you have any experience with Mora laminated carbon steel blades? They make their exclusive Original 1 knife and wood carving knife blades with it.
@@Ben.Cullen after a bit of research I found out, that Mora triflex steel isn't laminated, but simply heat treated in specific way. The edge is hard, but the spine is fairly soft. It's supposed to give the knife extra toughness, but was expensive, and thus is discontinued
Just about the Mora knives, full tang or not. At least in some models, the amount of steel, inside the handle, is significantly less, than that in the Mora Garberg, comparatively. That might contribute to the higher cost, as well as the 14C28N steel, (or what it specifically is called? ) and as well as the marketing hype, of cause too, maybe? This is a non-sequitur, but given your enthusiasm for cutting performance, I would highly recommend you check out a Boker Exskelibur I (one of the S35VN flavors) some time. Though it is only a mid-priced knife, it has amazing blade geometry for slicing due to its unusual combination of relatively thin blade stock and a high hollow grind. This thread on bladeforums analyzes this in great detail, comparing it visually/geometrically to the Spydiechef, an Opinel, and even a paring knife among others. www.bladeforums.com/threads/boker-plus-exskelibur-i-ti-frame-lock.1389313/ (The good stuff is on page 3.)
