What a great documentary! I don't know why the history of Mississippi food, music and people isn't marketed the way Louisiana's is. A lot more people would benefit from it.
When we have family visit from other parts of the country, they always want to eat at Big Apple. Its a unique Mississippi experience, and the food is really good. I'm glad its still around-- a piece of history moving forward.
I'm 54 years old and I've been eating pig ear sandwiches forever. The only parts of the hog we could afford were the ears, feet, tail, snout and intestines.
I was born in Jackson, hadn’t been there since I was two, almost 50yrs old now and seeing this makes me homesick and I don’t even eat pork... Thank you for ur service.
I was born and raised in Jackson Mississippi. I grew up eating Big Johns....my Mother ate there for years, starting in 1960s up until the 2010s. I left Mississippi 20 years ago because of the horrible decline. Big John's is the only thing that would ever bring me back to that city. You will never find good eating like that anywhere else.
Lol ok I KNEW I wasn’t tripping! When I read a story detailing how big John started it. My brain said “hey it used to be called Big Johns huh 🤔 “? But I was like nahhhh ok I made that up. They would have mentioned that in the story lol. But yesss! I was right 🙌
Jackson did prosper 35 years ago...it was one the most beautiful cities in the South. The malls and the Jackson Zoo was wonderful in 1980s and early 1990s. It's shocking how it went from a livable city to Third World in one generation. I left 20 years ago. Best decision I ever made.
@@Jaxxon123crazy I’ve been gone 32 yrs & the malls & zoo are what I remember and of COURSE big apple inn but wow smh. Would have thought the zoo at least was still viable

Oh the worst of time and the best of times because Black people came together back in those days. The good old time! What happen!!! Love the ears and smokes

Lived in Jackson MS as an immigrant for 22 years (1995-2017) and I am so glad I decided to visit Big Apple Inn one particular summer weekday around 2014, after reading the rave reviews about it. The pig ear sandwiches were absolutely delicious! I did not know the place (and Farish street) had such a rich history. Now that I've learned of this history it makes me sad to know such a thriving black owned street went into decline over the decades. Farish street was basically deserted for the entire time I lived in Jackson. I hope it can be revived someday.
You definitely missed the heyday. It was the best in 70s, 80s and even 90s. It was really booming them. I remember as child riding the city bus with my mother to go get them.

You guys need to try to help them get international and try freezing the sandwiches it might work out and you can ship all over the state just like wc a burger place I don’t want to name but it would be a market for it
Lol 😩I showl wish they could! Idk if u ever had Inn n Out burger but Bug Apple reminds me of them in terms of freshness. As MUCH as I would LOVE for Inn n out to deliver, I know they NEVER would…unless we get new tech. I think it would be hard for Big Apple to compromise the freshness, just to reach more people. They would have to send the meat, slaw & bun separately. Then there’s the issue of raw meat or pre cooked, dry bun or toasted 😩
Oh and I’ve never had WC in person surprisingly, only Krystal’s. The frozen WC I have tried and it’s decent. Nothing to write home about but I’d say a 5/10. Id try the restaurant 1 day to compare
