No, we didn't make a mistake moving up to draft Cossa. We wanted and needed a goalie. Good for Dallas for picking that kid, but the goalie was clearly a necessiity, and he's playing pretty damn well for GR in the AHL playoffs.
Coping
Cossa was the correct pick for the future ❤
Franchise altering? How about taking Filip Zadina instead of Quinn Hughes in 2018 draft?
Yes thank you Ken Holland.
Supposedly the Wing’s scouts were higher on Bouchard than Hughes…
That's not how draft trades work. Detroit would never have gotten Johnston. Dallas was going to take him either at 15 or 28. Since they had somehow confirmed or were confident that Johnston would not be taken by anyone else, they traded back to gain the extra assets. So Johnston likely would not have been there even if Detroit picked 28.
If Detroit made a mistake, then at least 20 other teams did as well.

You assume Detroit would have drafted Johnston had they kept that pick. There's no way of knowing how the draft would have played out. Regardless, the Wings goaltending situation has been pretty grim sine Howard retired, and now they at least have two top 10 goalie prospects.
You read his draft profile and it’s not nearly as impressive as what he’s become, Dallas did there job in taking a kid who had solid floor, but grew him to the point where his ceiling has become very high. You very well might be talking about Kasper or Danielson in the same breath as Johnston given proper coaching.
Kasper especially could become a big surprise given he got a very good floor now and could easily improve as time goes on
Johnson missed an entire season of development so it was a void era that many teams worried players with a high ceiling would slip between the cracks. Looks like it happened as Johnston appears to be playing like a lottery pick.
And so Danielson Lol AMAZING draft stuff from Yzerman
Stevie absolutely made the right move. Our goalie of the future is Cossa and we haven’t had one of those in a very long time.
I’d understand your point if Cossa was actually playing in the NHL right now and didn’t look good, but he hasn’t even played a game yet, for all anyone knows he could turn out to be an amazing goalie.
imagine trading down and still get the steal of the draft and the guy that might end up being the best player from that draft class as he is already the leader for points from every player in the 2021 draft
Got to give something to get something. Not all draft picks are going to land top players or contributing players.
Goat. 1 for 1 for Marner.

if Dallas were really high on Wyatt Johnson then they may have just picked him at 15 if the trade hadn't happened - so not really sure it makes sense to say Dallas's franchise has been made by Detroit making that trade... Now if Detroit had traded back because they desperately wanted extra picks and this allowed Dallas to move up which also allowed them to take Johnson that may be more relevant.
Well prove everyone wrong that cossa was the right pick same with Augustine
Goalies take longer to develop. I can’t wait for the follow up in a couple years reevaluating this comparison….. when it’s actually fair to do so
The pick to be upset about was taking Gustav Lindstrom one pick before Jason Robertson in 2017. The Wings desperately needed a goalie when they took Cossa.
Crazy to think the Wings could have Robertson and Hughes rn if Holland wasn’t so incompetent
they desperately needed a goalie right now not in 5 years
Cossa is Detroit's goalie of the future so Definitly kinda looks like a win/win trade for now but we'll see what become Cossa
maybe but then we would have no goalies
Trey Augustine might still end up being the better of the two prospects
@@davidwright9233 Agreed it is better if there is competition between 2 goalies in similar age. It may be both will be on the regular season roster for years to come as a tandem.
@@davidwright9233Cossa's ceiling is so high that I don't think so but interesting take that would be an Insanely good problem to have to decide who would be the Starter between both guys
Mid guy for a star goalie? Oh no
So far, Yzerman's 1st round draft picks have panned out. It's some of the 2nd round draft picks that are more questionable.
We sure could use a right handed center right now
They needed a goalie but I just think Wallstedt would of been better
LEGO, you are reaching on this one.
You are so right about Johnston I really only got to see his game
Last nights game announcers were calling his name out whenever he touched the puck, which is often great player
Being a Red Wings fan I appreciate your knowledge thanks
Dallas got the scouts
What kind of asinine video is this? You want Steve yzerman to draft? In order to stop other teams from getting a player instead of rebuilding what he needs for the team and drafting the most Is important Is position in the game. That may be the dumbest possible thought process I've ever heard. Either you're really low on content for Detroit or you.Don't understand what a rebuild is
These videos are lazy.
You can't win it all without top goaltending. Recent winners all had top 10 goalies. The Blackhawks had the 16th. Last team to win with a mediocre goalie was LA.
I am more worried about what SY does drafting AFTER the 1st round.
So far all he has to show for it is Carter Mazur who really will not be a game changer in the NHL.
Last years second round for Detroit resulted in yet another goalie and two more defenders. Brady Cleveland is a huge project.
Johansson is a guaranteed NHLer next year, and in my mind he should have been on the roster this year. Wallinder has top 4 upside, imo. I do agree that there's a lot to be desired after their first round selections, though, but I do think they have a couple of decent picks.
@@europason2293 SY has to find later round gems very soon, it is where teams distance themselves from others in young talent and barter to make big draft day trades. Right now not much in terms of wingers after round 1. I have always like our defender prospect pool but that is not putting pucks in the net.
Detroit never had Wyatt Johnson but will say Yzerman biggest fumble was drafting Filip Zadina over Quinn Hughes though...
that was a Holland pick wasn't it? I thought Zadina was drafted 2018 and Yzerman appointed 2019?
That was a Ken Holland pick
Yes that was a Holland pick.. But they were never going to draft Hughes anyway
Fake news
They need to trade guys like Larkin away and fully commit to a rebuild
Are you stupid?
Lol what?
Will never happen unless Dylan wants out. Right now as it is going once Larkin reaches 30 it may be time to reset the build as finding a 1C is hard enough, and even harder an elite one without lottery help.
@@ericscottstevens the team is built in an odd fashion
It’s wayyyy older than it should be
@@ericscottstevens it will depend on the development of Danielson and Kasper.
yeah another one of yzerman's many fumbles lol
look at all the wings zombies in the comments defending this guy though 😭
Obviously trolls like you have 0 clue on how to rule a franchise so anyways your opinion
Stop crying
@@jonathanlong4066 that's not an argument lol
@@nadaduo1765 Neither was your comment. Nice try
Since wallstedt was the clear best goalie prospect at the time, and currently looking like a real NHLer, cossa picks looks bad every day passes
You say that like Cossa has been bad. He's obviously not as NHL-ready as Jesper is, but Cossa being a more long-term project was part of his draft profile. He's been excellent in his first season in the AHL.
Cossa had better numbers in the AHL regular season than Wallstedt.
2.41 GA & .914 SV% to 2.70 GA & .910 %
Won loss record was not even close supporting Cossa's better results.
Cossa will be the better goalie when they are ready for the NHL
@@user-fc2ob7yl3u I don't know if I'd go that far. I won't make any judgements until they're both in the NHL for at least two or three years. They're both really good goalies. I do agree that Cossa has a potentially higher ceiling given his size and athleticism, but whether he can hit that ceiling is another matter. Detroit has never been good at developing goaltenders, but maybe things will be different under Yzerman.
@@ericscottstevens tbf Iowa was a worse team than GR so Wallstedt will have slightly worse numbers but I'd give the edge to him.
However the future is uncertain and the way it's going for Cossa I think he'll be ready not in 2025 but in 2026, 2025 I think he'll have some games in the NHL like 5-10 games max.
Id still take Cossa ALL DAY LONG , Cossa is gonna b a Vezina trophy winning goalie 100%
Really not a fan of how Yzerman is building this team, I don't get analysts ranking them as the best or close to prospect pools.
It's because they have a lot of depth at every position. They still lack elite top-end talent, with the exception of Sandin-Pellikka and I would argue Trey Augustine, but when you look at their defensemen, centers, wingers and goaltenders, they have notable players at all of those positions.
Yzerman didn’t do a bad job in rebuilding Tampa. Let me know when rebuilds are add water rebuild over.
