Disney wasn't trying to say 13 year olds are adults. It'd cuz kids at that age think of themselves as adults lol. Turning 13 is serious business! Also yes I did make embarrassing doodles as a preteen and teen... and sometimes still. Haha!
also 13 is only considered adult age with the TTC (our bus/train system in Toronto) because you're allowed to travel alone on the bus/train at 13, but you have to pay the adult prices! for everything else in Canada that's still underage/minor age ahaha
It’s cringey and full of second hand embarrassment and that’s why it’s the most accurate film I’ve ever watched depicting becoming a teenage girl… I loved it
I related so hard to this movie, I spoke as awkwardly as Mei, I was as much of a fangirl as she was and it was a whole new experience watching the movie with my mom
As a teenage girl I can confirm this movie is pretty accurate (well y'know not the red panda part) while I don't personally relate to obsessing over boy bands and crushes but a lot of my peers were pretty much exactly like this
This movie was a pretty accurate representation of teenage girlhood lol. I was a messy kid like Mei and her friends fawning over boy bands and reading twilight. The director said the boy group was inspired by older Kpop bands Big Bang and 2pm plus other international boy groups back then hence why the boys are all different ethnicities. EDIT: Please read the director, Domee Shi's Teen Vogue article. I got my information from her answers in that article.
I don’t fully relate to Mei (not everyone needs to relate with the main character, just wanna mention that) but one thing I do relate to is the flipping mood swings OMG THOSE WERE SO STRESSFUL TO DEAL WITH
I was like these girls back on 2010 but for a while, and it was a great moment with friends, classmates still being epic together, overall we were still cool 🤣 I missed the old times bro
This movie was considering a very SPECIFIC audience, that's for sure. Everyone who said they didn't like it were not the target audience lmao. I remember my friends and I as teens used to freak out over boys like in the movie as well lol
So I think a large part of the "I'm an adult" or "I'm a woman" thing is that, at least for me and all my girl friends growing up, everyone would say that when you get your period you are now a "woman" and no longer a girl. There's some pretty heavy social commentary there. Girls are usually forced to grow up and mature faster than boys are. I think that's why there is such an obsession with that phrasing in the movie.
also... coming from Toronto - she says she's an adult according to "Toronto Transit System" our public transit name. That was the first time we got ourselves discount cards as 'adults' XD
The reason they had a box of kittens is because the family owns two cats. We can assume they had a litter. Also the reason Mei Mei imagines the boys as mermaids, confirmed, is that she’s too innocent to imagine them below the waist. Hence the mermaid tail lol
Lol i doubt that it's that complicated with the mermaid thing. As a pre-teen girl i was deep into the sexy/pretty fantasy creature men like elves, dragons who turn into demon kings, and of course mer-men. It's just part of cringe pre-teen girl culture.
I wish I was that innocent at 13 my aunt gave the sexy talk at 9 and it only got more graphic as I went older and my aunt wasted no time giving me the menstrual cycle talk got that a 8
So, this movie is a very accurate representation of what it’s like to be a young teenage girl. Down to being obsessed with mermaids, cute boy singers, and romance novels. Also, most people when they turn 13 think that they’re adults now😅 Been a while for me though since I was that young
I was just like Mei in middle school, and I was born and raised in Toronto. She has the same family issues, responsibilities, interests ect like I had. I'm not Asian but I feel like this movie was made for me regardless.
Idk for me as a teenager back then. I wasn’t into mermaids or romantic movies a lot. Now these days it’s more for elf’s & bunny girls, action/adventures/mystery & horror films
Every single girl I knew growing up (including myself) did things pretty similar to Mei and her friends. In my case, anytime a movie or book came out that we liked my friends wrote a ton of self insert fanfiction shipping us with the main characters lol. Being a teenage girl is chaos (and also hilarious ngl)
The way my friends and I would smuggle our own self insert one direction fics in class 💀 we'd write them in note pads and hand them over to each other and cover for each other as we wrote new chapters in class
The movie is so cute. The music brought me back to my preteen years and joining the main girl on the emotional rollercoaster she goes though is so fun and charming.
As someone who was a teenage girl in 2002, it's very accurate! If you could see my binders when I was in school, you would see how on point the movie is. It's one of the reason I LOVE IT.
Disney is showing a more realistic side of pre-teens/ teenagers. it's embarrassing but I could definitely relate in some areas. I'm an adult now but I watched it with my mother and my little sister. My mother and I kept laughing while remembering when I was going through those years. lmaooo and my little sister is just starting that era. It was a nice bonding moment for us.
Agreed. There was definitely some second-hand embarrassment with watching the movie, but given its themes, that's just a testament to how well it was written.
Okay, I'm back with another fun fact because I'm biased af lol. The boy that you hear the most in 4town throughout the movie is named Jordan Fisher. He's an AMAZING singer that got his big start with Disney. And although his start on Disney was good, I always complained that he deserved more. Thankfully, he started making music and got into Broadway, really showcasing his voice. Now he goes back and still does things for Disney. AND Billie Eilish and her brother made 4Town's music
Yes!! Jordan Fisher is an amazing musician. He did Disney, played Evan Hansen on Broadway, & has been in some Netflix films like TATBILB 2, where he got to show off his amazing piano skills 😊 👏🏿 I didn't know that about Billie & Finneas writing the songs!!
@@ambriaashley3383 Yeah! I love Jordan. He's really doing it big lately. And I was so surprised to see them pop up in an interview about the music. Finneas voices one of them too. The blond boy that was making pottery
Fun fact: this is the first time a Disney movie openly addressed topics such as periods and teenage hood in such a way and one of the only times a Disney movie has had a Diabetic character
billy every teenager or kid thinks they're an "adult" when they aren't. shit you're telling me you never thought you were all grown up and mature at 13? that's kind of the point of why she keeps calling herself an adult lol
The movie is from her perspective. Disney isn’t saying 13 is adult. The 13 year old thinks she’s an adult because she’s now a teenager. The adults in her life don’t share this view obviously. But yes- 13 year old girls definitely doodle pictures of cute boys. That style is so similar to how my friends drew in middle school. She’s in 8th grade.
Same, me and my friends are 16 and 17 and we still do half the time. I think it's more of a lifestyle for us than a phase, and it most likely won't go away so easily because we're artists or at least aspiring to be artists 😂
This movie is very accurate to depicting what it feels like to be a teenage girl. Disney isn’t trying to say that being 13 is being an adult. She is very much a child. But because 13 is the age that young girls start to transition from being a little girl to a teenage girl or young lady, it’s a coming of age story. When I was 13, I also probably would’ve said something like “I’m an adult now!” To my mom. I also had the hormones, got interested in boys, my body changed, and the relationship between me and my mother evolved. I promise you that every single thing that Mei did in this movie, I and every other teenage girl in North America also did back then.
Visual Effects of Awesome: Mei's fur in red panda form is very detailed and fluffy. The cityscape of Toronto is beautiful as well, and the bright pastel color palette is very pleasing and Domee Shi has referred to the palette as an "Asian Tween Fever Dream".
Some of the cityscape shots and compositions (Meilin being framed by the moon when she jumped up) definitely feel like they're inspired by Sailor Moon, it was really nice!
As a woman, the whole "you're an adult" now DOES come with puberty. PARTICULARLY the.....the....THAT TIME OF MONTH. Why I don't know. But women are always told "you're a woman now." when your....red peony....blooms. SO LISTEN MOTHER NATURE WHY YOU TRYIN' TO MAKE US GROW UP SO FAST HUH? Being an adult sucks. Also also that whole red peony bit had me DYING. That's always how it is. Always. Dad dips, mom goes into overdrive, girl freaks out lol.
Yeah, pretty much. At my house we learned it early (since there were 4 daughters) and dad stepped up to buy supplies when needed, because we all took our mom’s. But it ended up okay in the end. ❤️
@@dttzening546 my mom prepared for this moment for years and when I finally got mine at 18 I got a abbreviated sex talk and my mom had me take a long bath and then she taught me how to put a pad on
The reason Disney focuses so much on the relationship with the mother is because the protagonists are typically young girls. Usually, a mother/daughter relationship is more complex than a father/daughter one bc a mother and daughter can see aspects of themselves within the other and their own wants and fears about what they see can create complicated feelings and dynamics. The same goes for father/son relationships. Not saying the father/daughter or mother/son relationships can't be complex and interesting, it's just more typical for it to be the same gendered parent and child.
I understand where Maylyn is coming from not as a cultural standpoint but as a person who cares about her mothers opinion so much that she will do anything for her mother and not for anything for her own self interest.
This movie is so relatable 😂 it kinda makes me cringe thinking back to how I was at 13 but I definitely thought I was an adult back then! 🤦🏻♀️ I remember being 13 and watching one direction 😭
I remember being a cringey 13-year-old obsessing over cute anime characters and drawing in my notebooks. This movie hits home for it and that's why I love it.
This movie is very accurate, and Disney has been (in my opinion) more respectful to children's intellect. I feel like most adults forget just how much they knew when they were kids, Kids may not be mature but they know a lot more than adults want to admit.
A month late to the party but....at around age 10 I drew a picture of a bride and groom and pasted a photo of my face on the bride and a photo of Usher's face on the groom. So yeah, preteen girls do be like that 😂
growing up in the 90s, once you got your period, you were "a young lady now" or a "woman" and everyone expected you to act like it, regardless if you got your period at thirteen, sixteen, or ten. so i think that's where the "adult" commentary comes from, she's simply parroting what everyone else has told her, and also desperate to grow up and be that adult and make her own choices while still feeling very powerless. it's one of those frustrating teenage things, especially for girls. we're told we're women, that we're ladies, we're expected to act older and more mature than our male counterparts and put away childish things, only not given the freedoms that come with growing up. i think that's what they were trying to comment on.
@@monicaandolina4295 @Eyarnon fr I think you meant you grew up in the 00s not the 80s. I'm literally ten years older than you and I grew up in the 90s. (I kinda missed almost all of the 80s unless you count Care Bears, Smurfs, syndication, VHS and reruns.)
Billy c’mon. Even to this day my middle schoolers still do the whole “I’m not a kid anymore” it just saves time to say “I’m an adult” instead. Also, she can drive on the bus alone and start to do several things without parental supervision, it’s not that deep 🤣
Ok Billy, putting in that overtime - we see you dog!!! This movie is super cute and as a former people pleaser child it spoke to me greatly. I'm really glad with how it all played out.
So as someone who had a very strained relationship with my parents, especially my mom, I can say that I love this movie and find that it is very accurate. I remember turning 13 with my friends and having to lead a double life. Being an only child, I was my mom's only focus, I didn't have siblings to hide behind so I had to be perfect. But then with my friends, we thought we were untouchable. Cursing like sailors, reading and writing fanfiction that we were definitely too young for, experimenting with our fashion style. We felt grown up (mostly cause our home lives also demanded us to grow up faster than most) and that is exactly what this movie is trying to convey. That point of no return were kids have to start pulling away, and developing into themselves or risk resenting parts of themselves cause they're trying to shove it down for other people.
Subtract the actual panda and Asian backstory and Mei Mei is me at 13 in 1977-- from the glasses to the flute to my devotion to the Jackson5. I loved this movie!
5:05 That part is actually so relatable! My mom used to have me watching her soap operas with her and would give me all the juicy illicit details going on between the characters 💀😆😂😂
Same! I would watch novelas with my mom but whenever a steamy scene would come on she would make me turn around and not watch cause that was for “adults” 😂😂
The type of food Meilin and her mom are making in the beginning are dumplings, but I'm not sure if it's a gigantic dumpling, or a bun with pork and cabbage (Xiao Long Bao). Most Chinese restaurants have these, if you have an authentic one near you, consider giving it a try 🤗
Yeah, the stuffing isn’t red and barbecue-saucy, so they’re probably not char siu bao. Soup dumplings seem most likely and now I am dying of crave, either kind will do, dumplings and buns rule the world!
The music was so good because Billy Elish and her brother Finneas were in charge of the department, plus the main voice in the boyband was Jordan Fisher and he's amazing at pretty much everything. Acting, singing, dancing you name it.
Re: Bootylicious... they used Shut up and Drive in Wreck it Ralph, so... I was more surprised/impressed that they actually addressed getting your period, and not only referenced but SHOWED pads.
Jordan Fisher is the voice actor for Robaire the one you were talking about was going off with those HIGH NOTES!!! I honestly LOVE Jordan’s voice soooo much!!! He did an amazing and so did all the other voices actors for 4*Town!! Kudo’s to all of them
This movie was so relatable for me. I really feel like this is the most relatable movie I’ve ever seen regarding what it feels like to be a 13 year old girl. The sheer humiliation when her mom marched her into the supermarket was sadly super relatable. It’s a rough time and this movie honestly made me cry a little.
The whole thing about being 13 wasn't about being officially an adult. But she's aware she is growing up, and seems very interested in doing things grown-ups do. She wanted her first experience to be at a concert, see her favorite band, with her friends. She was tired of being treated like a child, and wants her mother to treat her as a mature adult. Thirteen is an age of a lot of change in a young adults life.
This is like my third time rewatching this and istfg!! Every time you get to the double jointed ( 17:50 ) elbow shi, I would yell out “Billlyyyy” 😭😭 I got double jointed elbows too so it honestly intrigued me to know what you was finna say😂😂
I just saw Turning Red last night. This is a feel good film. It is a breath of fresh air. The scenes can be cringey but in a good way as it makes the film relatable. It is nice to see a character who is quirky without the "I am like other girls" approach. I like how her friends are supportive of her. I am glad they didn't take advantage of it. Seeing Mei simping over crushes reminds me of my teenage years except they are anime crushes. I did attend my first concert at 14 except it was Michele Buble (I went to see it with my family but it was enjoyable). I used to play my tamagotchi. I still have it with me. Although I am not a straight A student, I do want to do well in my studies and not let my parents down. The dynamic between Mei and mom reminds me of my relationship with my mom. It sometimes can be lonely when you think you are only going through this. The fear of having part of your individuality being taken away from you is real. If anything, the portrayal of mother-daughter dynamic, conflict and generational trauma in the film feels real. Although the climax feels rushed, it made me cry. Sure we have our own disagreements but I am glad that she is supportive of me going to art school. As a Chinese I can confirm that the "you lose/ gain weight" remarks, asking you to eat more or what you are doing happens during family gatherings. And yes, they even ask you if are currently in a relationship. The vibe her aunts give reminds me of the typical Singaporean aunties I see in public. I am sure that everyone (regardless of culture) have their fair share of "auntie" moments. You should check out The Joy Luck Club. Like Turning Red and Encanto, it deals with generational trauma, Asian culture and mother-daughter relationship. Overall, I enjoy your reaction:) The song is catchy too. Side meme Me: I am 13 and that makes me a grown up. Also me : How does this work again???
I felt really emotional throughout the movie, it felt like an almost perfect reflection of my own life. Perfect. Grade A student. Able. Momma’s baby. I loved the movie and Mei being able to truly embrace herself!
5:04 well it isChinese Dumpling- Dimsum. there is tender meat inside, wrapped by a coat of flour. it is real soft and delicious. you definitely should try it.
Watching this just makes it clear that Billy can no longer relate to what it was like to be 13. Of course, he’s a guy so some stuff he wouldn’t relate to because of that. But yeah, Billy, you’ve officially cemented yourself in the role that we all, as children, viewed our parents in lol. I’m 25 and can remember being a weird 13 year old in 8th grade/freshman year. Also, I saw Chris Brown in concert when I was like 10/11 (maybe younger) and I’m pretty sure I left changed lmaoooo Edit: 27:20 thank you lol finally cause it was feeling like you was never 13 😂
As a Canadian girl, that grew up in the 2000’s, being the weird anime nerd, and having friends that were into the Backstreet Boys/NSYNC, I had a lot to relate to. Even getting into K-Pop, and having more friends that came from immigrant parents, while I was in high school… there was so much representation in a Canadian setting. I even remember the “Save the planet” stuff happening a lot at the schools during that time. I know a huge thing people are complaining about is the “period talk”, but GOOD! We need more media attention, and talking about periods, without feeling “dirty” about it. This is a natural thing, that many people go through. My mom said that it kept reminding her of me. There was a lot of thought put into this movie. From how red pandas act like teenagers, to having metaphors for puberty, Canadian events and items (Indigenous people’s month, purple Raptors jersey, timbits, etc.) and conflicts within immigrant families, with wanting to have high expectations in a new country to honour your family, as well as trying to figure out who you are as a person, and have fun with your friends. I could go on and on. But between the anime influences, Canadian references, the representation and that I grew up during that time (2002) it was great. (Plus I love red pandas 😂 )
I was born in 2002 and I love a lot of 2000’s and 90’s stuff(mainly the music. Graduated last year and everyone still sings “ I want it that way”really loudly. I love it
I’ve been looking through a lot of hate things for Growing Red, and the two complaints that I see the most often are that one: they think Mei and her friends are too “obnoxious”, and two: that they don’t relate with the main character. Well, here’s what I have to say about those two complaints: For one, I don’t consider these characters obnoxious. In fact they’re more expressive and unique then most animated 13 year old girls. Sure, they all fantasize over a boy band, but aside from that they’re all unique and interesting characters. My favorite has gotta be Abby, I just love her character and her trait of going full blown Korean when she gets very angry is very creative And for two, main characters don’t have to relate with EVERYONE. Take for example some newer movies, like Soul, Luca, Encanto, and more. While some people may relate to their main characters, not everyone will. The idea is to relate to a LARGE MAJORITY of people, not everyone. So while you may not relate to the boy band obsessed, grade A student, Chinese Canadian girl who wants to make her mom proud of her despite liking things her mother doesn’t except, someone else may, even if it’s very loosely (Also, I think the reason Mei calls herself an adult at 13 is because of one simple reason: most kids think they’re officially adults when they turn into teens)
I’ll add that I don’t think you have to fully relate to a character at all to like them. They may have completely different experiences, but the audience should still be able to emphasize. That’s why I find the “I can’t relate” argument for Turning Red dumb. Like, you’re tell me you can relate to living toys, ants, and anthropomorphic cars, but not a tween girl? Kids liked The Incredibles, and they’re not fathers hitting a mid-life crisis.
Just watched this movie with my parents and the entire movie was us just pointing at each other and saying “accurate” as the Mei of the family and growing up in Toronto this was INCREDIBLY close to home and hit the relatable nerve!!
Mei is the most relatable Pixar character I've ever seen. I definitely relate to the cultural pressure of honouring your mother to a detrimental extent. That store scene gave me War flashbacks😬
Billy that food in 5:13 is called a dumpling its usually serve with pork and with spring onions sometimes people and mixed it up and put their own fillings inside the dumpling and make all sorts of combinations
Sir, that is Jordan Fisher singing. That was real disrespectful in the beginning but I'm glad you came around lmao. This was the most accurate representation of becoming a teenage girl I've seen, very well made. Also I 100% got my water thanks to your peer pressuring lol.
Lol was looking for this comment. Don't sleep on Jordan he can SING SING!! I knew it was him as soon as I heard him. Glad you came around Billy. Loved the commentary as usual. And very accurate representation of being a teenage girl. This movie was made for the 30 year old women now who originally grew up in the 2000s.
hey Moana had a problematic dad and supportive mom with a smaller role… even tho he was honestly easier to excuse than the mom from this movie. idk why they’re afraid to talk about problems with fathers but that’s definitely something lacking in Disney movies
Hear me out, just a theory! The reason they are called 4-town is cause they are from 4 different cities. (They are 5 members, but 2 of them are brothers)
Technically this is a Pixar movie, Disney just slapped their name on it. And since Pixar is its own company, they don't have to be 100% sugar-coated family friendly G rated like most Disney films are. Pixar movies can make jokes like that and not get in trouble. Besides this movie is rate PG, so if parents are offeded by it, or letting kids watch it alone, that's their own problem.
8:13 it's because according to her bus pass (she lives in Canada) people 13 or older are adults as relates to riding the bus, like she was earlier in the movie
This was me as a teen. I swore I was brown and had it all together, was forever doodling my crushes name all over my notebooks, obsessing over 98 Degrees and Backstreet Boys, and my girlfriends meant the world to me. Having their friendship and never ending support meant everything to me.
Billy randomly busting out with The Thong Song got me laughing so hard I can't breathe. Sometimes I'm almost convinced Sisqo was a 90s fever dream. Personally I didn't like Turning Red as much as some other recent Disney movies, but it definitely reminded me of being a teenager in the 90s and early 2000s.
Honestly this movie hits so hard. I cried several times and related so much, especially as a mixed Chinese girl who was a teen in Toronto. I didn't have the cultural pressure like Mei but I did have the same approval need from my mother and school pressure from her and my dad. For my fiancé, who is fully Chinese from immigrant parents and lived his whole life in Toronto, this movie hits so hard he almost couldn't finish it. It is so culturally accurate and painful, from the relationship between mother and daughter, grandma and daughter, mother and father, and the family to each other and "outsiders" like friends who are from different cultures.
The meal they were prepping, spicy pork belly with bok choi, dumplings and steam buns. And yes, I was Mei drawing fanfiction and fantasy romance with celebrities and characters. Also, Disney is still geared to kids, but PIXAR has as track record of appealing to older gens. Just look at Soul, that movie was definitely not a kids movie, it appealed to the existential crisis older kids get.
I love how Sandra oh voices the mom and her character looks just like her. I also love how this movie is all about what teenage girls go thru in their teenage years and the panda is really her menstrual period if some people didn't get that. It's a great movie for 7 year olds and up to understand what is coming and what they are going thru is normal.
Yes, as a 13 yr old anime fan, romance novel reading, 100% rule following good girl around the same time as this movie's timeline: can confirm the drawings & thinking yourself a grown up is completely normal 😂
How come some of the more “immature” reactors have been the most mature about the period topic. You and Welchy both guessed it before the mom said it and were both immediately chill like “yeah that’s life, it’s natural.” Every other (male) reactor has had at least a moment of “uh, wtf, huh??” and being awkward and weirded out.
Haha, I noticed that too! I don't watch Welchy as much so I can't speak to his personal life, but I'm glad to see at least Billy is chill about this stuff considering he has a daughter of his own.
9:15 omg my mom did this to me! It was the most embarrassing well mortifying thing ever! Over me wanting to wear black lipstick to school which was back in 2003 and I was a 13 year old. Basically trying out my alt/goth phase looks at the time which people in my school already made fun of me for. it was not as popular as it is now or at least as accepted but I felt like being brave in a new outfit with some Halloween black lipstick lol. So We used to have to wait outside before they let us into school if we came early and we would chill with our friends. Before I decided to walk to school my mom would drop me off, and this day she dropped me off and I waited For her to turn at the stop sign put on tht cheap lipstick and she came right back around the block and rolled the window down screaming and I mean SCREAMING at me to get in the car and take it off in front of all my friends and people that made fun of me, making me cry. It was the worst. Then she kept rolling around the block for like two weeks after that trying to catch me doing something. Over some lipstick. 🤦🏼♀️ to clarify she didn’t care about me wearing makeup at all. I wore bad eyeliner and red lipstick all the time lol it was just the color of that lipstick idk why she overreacted.
Sorry about that, that sucks. My mom was the opposite, she told me TO WEAR makeup. I was super lucky and made cheering (I love to tumble) and went with no makeup for half of football season until my mom said I should at least do mascara because my face was washed out looking from the bleachers 😆 i was mad then but i get it now
I’m so sorry! That’s so hurtful and that wasn’t okay. I never had issues with my parents controlling my makeup, but they were definitely over controlling of other stuff. I wore a tight fitting crew neck t-shirt with bell bottom jeans to high school once and my dad called me a slut. It was the most hurtful thing anyone had ever said to me, BECAUSE it came from someone that was supposed to love me and not humiliate me.
when i was 11 i got mine at a friends place and was so freaked out. My dad came and picked me up and mum was out of town for a week so he was a little out of his depth. When i had cleaned up and sorted myself he said, "well congratulations on becoming a woman. Do you want KFC for dinner?" LOL which sums up my dad's parenting skills I guess! The 13 being a grown up thing was just an exaggeration because Mei is narrating the story, but as a former 13 year old girl, it did feel like a massive step into the unknown leaving childhood behind and realising that your body was gonna do its thing regardless of how we felt about it. I reckon this film is less about puberty and more about the time in a child's life where we want to grow into our own people, not just the person we feel our parents accept. Loved the reaction as always, and am glad you never had to deal with a period lol
LOL I got mine at 10 while staying over with my grandma for a few days. I wasn't too shocked, but I was too shy to tell her, so she found out a bit later because bathroom's garbage. She proceeded to hug me and go buy some pads. Unluckily for us, it's likely that back in my grandma's days they were called protectors, because she brought daily protectors instead of pads 😂 It was a weird time.
@@mylife-23 i cant imagine how scary that'd have been! I'm grateful for my trans whānau coming up today, there's so much more opportunity to avoid a traumatizing puberty for them. My country just passed a bill outlawing conversion therapy too! Hope you are living your best life x
I like that it didn’t shy away from stuff like periods and growing up, especially since this is normal part of life for girls. Still surprised me when they had the stripper music and drug lines in there
This movie felt personal to me because it was set in the year I was born and I live not to far from Toronto. The animation was very good like Luca it was cute. The characters were funny especially Meis mom 9/10 for me.
I can't tell you how hard I laughed when 4T came out and started singing when they were dragging the mom. Cause to me, I feel like backstage their manager was like 'look, y'all don't understand, this could LAUNCH y'all's careers, solo albums? Get out there and you each can have a solo album'
I love how you're editing doesnt give too much of the movie away. Makes me feel like I could watch the movie after this and still be able to be surprised by things
I really loved this movie. Not only as having Canadian representation, I related a lot to mei during this movie because it really shows how it is for young girls going through puberty.

EDIT: Please read the director, Domee Shi's Teen Vogue article. I got my information from her answers in that article.
I was definitely like Mei as a 13 and 14 year old teenager. Although I hated the Twilight series when it came when I was 15.

I second this!!
I 53rd this

yesss exactly !!
The reason they had a box of kittens is because the family owns two cats. We can assume they had a litter.
Also the reason Mei Mei imagines the boys as mermaids, confirmed, is that she’s too innocent to imagine them below the waist. Hence the mermaid tail lol
Ooooh that's why! 😭
Lol i doubt that it's that complicated with the mermaid thing. As a pre-teen girl i was deep into the sexy/pretty fantasy creature men like elves, dragons who turn into demon kings, and of course mer-men. It's just part of cringe pre-teen girl culture.
I wish I was that innocent at 13 my aunt gave the sexy talk at 9 and it only got more graphic as I went older and my aunt wasted no time giving me the menstrual cycle talk got that a 8
At this point I’m convinced Disney just said “let’s tackle ALL the mommy issues”
She keeps saying she's an adult because she's a preteen that thinks she's grown, disney isn't try to change the adult age 💀
The not telling her about the Panda thing was definitely a metaphor for moms who put off telling their daughters about their menstrual cycle
We don’t want a Prince Charming anymore, we want our mom’s to apologize 😂

So, this movie is a very accurate representation of what it’s like to be a young teenage girl. Down to being obsessed with mermaids, cute boy singers, and romance novels. Also, most people when they turn 13 think that they’re adults now😅 Been a while for me though since I was that young
I was just like Mei in middle school, and I was born and raised in Toronto. She has the same family issues, responsibilities, interests ect like I had. I'm not Asian but I feel like this movie was made for me regardless.
That is so funny because none of that is accurate for me!
Idk for me as a teenager back then. I wasn’t into mermaids or romantic movies a lot. Now these days it’s more for elf’s & bunny girls, action/adventures/mystery & horror films

"There's a Beast in us that should be exercised, not exorcised" really resonates with this movie, I like it.
I absolutely loved fanfics of my favorite boy bands as a teenager.
thats so relatable lmao
So bad
Ikr! 😂 😭
Fr this more accurate than them princesses at 16
He did Disney, played Evan Hansen on Broadway, & has been in some Netflix films like TATBILB 2, where he got to show off his amazing piano skills 😊 👏🏿
I didn't know that about Billie & Finneas writing the songs!!
@@ambriaashley3383 Yeah! I love Jordan. He's really doing it big lately. And I was so surprised to see them pop up in an interview about the music. Finneas voices one of them too. The blond boy that was making pottery
Yes jordan fisher in broadway was the best! Rent evan hanson omg
IS JORDAN? NO WAY
Wait that was Jordan fisher?! no wonder his voice sounded similiar!
Fun fact: this is the first time a Disney movie openly addressed topics such as periods and teenage hood in such a way and one of the only times a Disney movie has had a Diabetic character
It's Pixar, though.
And then baymax did it.

Why does she have a card adults don’t have a card to show that they’re adults yummy I wonder how she’s gonna be when she’s like 17
@@myagamez3036 She has a bus pass. She pays the adult fair according to the transit system rules that 13-65 is an adult.
Same, me and my friends are 16 and 17 and we still do half the time. I think it's more of a lifestyle for us than a phase, and it most likely won't go away so easily because we're artists or at least aspiring to be artists 😂
The part of deviantart that isn't fetish pics is mostly the kind of stuff Mei draws here xD
she's in 7th grade bc she's turning 13 :)
mine was casual lol. my mum prepared me for this a lot of times and I got lucky that I can talk to my dad about this too.

I group up in 80s too now I am 29 year old soon be 30 year old bring back good memories everything was safe

The part where they chant at the big red panda (Ming) when 4town joined in is so GORGEOUS!!!
Those two songs make such a good remix/mashup.
Subtract the actual panda and Asian backstory and Mei Mei is me at 13 in 1977-- from the glasses to the flute to my devotion to the Jackson5. I loved this movie!

Every time you get to the double jointed ( 17:50 ) elbow shi, I would yell out “Billlyyyy” 😭😭

I just saw Turning Red last night. This is a feel good film. It is a breath of fresh air. The scenes can be cringey but in a good way
as it makes the film relatable.

Well, here’s what I have to say about those two complaints:
For one, I don’t consider these characters obnoxious. In fact they’re more expressive and unique then most animated 13 year old girls. Sure, they all fantasize over a boy band, but aside from that they’re all unique and interesting characters. My favorite has gotta be Abby, I just love her character and her trait of going full blown Korean when she gets very angry is very creative
And for two, main characters don’t have to relate with EVERYONE. Take for example some newer movies, like Soul, Luca, Encanto, and more. While some people may relate to their main characters, not everyone will. The idea is to relate to a LARGE MAJORITY of people, not everyone. So while you may not relate to the boy band obsessed, grade A student, Chinese Canadian girl who wants to make her mom proud of her despite liking things her mother doesn’t except, someone else may, even if it’s very loosely
(Also, I think the reason Mei calls herself an adult at 13 is because of one simple reason: most kids think they’re officially adults when they turn into teens)
Fun fact: Priya (the Indian Girl) is played by Matreyi who plays Devi in NHIE
Just watched this movie with my parents and the entire movie was us just pointing at each other and saying “accurate” as the Mei of the family and growing up in Toronto this was INCREDIBLY close to home and hit the relatable nerve!!

Personally I didn't like Turning Red as much as some other recent Disney movies, but it definitely reminded me of being a teenager in the 90s and early 2000s.
I loved how she embarrassed Mei
The mom not telling her about the red panda thing was definitely a metaphor for a period

2:14, when he started dancing at the intro, 🤣🤣🤣🤣I cried laughing
21:40 "she ain't gonna even care about them by the time she is 30"
cut to me, almost 30, still waiting for that 1D hiatus to end 🤡
😂😂😂 well I stand corrected here
How come some of the more “immature” reactors have been the most mature about the period topic.

I was super lucky and made cheering (I love to tumble) and went with no makeup for half of football season until my mom said I should at least do mascara because my face was washed out looking from the bleachers 😆 i was mad then but i get it now
@@KatieLHall-fy1hw no I could wear makeup I wore it all the time like I said, she just got really heated over the black lipstick, 🤷🏼♀️
@@naolucillerandom5280 omg, what a sweetheart!!
Got mine at 8, terrified me cuz I'm trans 🙃
@@mylife-23 i cant imagine how scary that'd have been! I'm grateful for my trans whānau coming up today, there's so much more opportunity to avoid a traumatizing puberty for them. My country just passed a bill outlawing conversion therapy too! Hope you are living your best life x

This movie surprised me, the trailer didn’t even really show the plot at all! I really enjoyed it though
I like that it didn’t shy away from stuff like periods and growing up, especially since this is normal part of life for girls. Still surprised me when they had the stripper music and drug lines in there
12:31 cheetah girls break out into song got me hollering in my ramen 😭😭😭😭
So the singer is actually Jordan Fisher. He’s a singer, actor and has even won Dancing With The Stars ☺️
This movie felt personal to me because it was set in the year I was born and I live not to far from Toronto. The animation was very good like Luca it was cute. The characters were funny especially Meis mom 9/10 for me.
5:12 that’s a snack in Asia ,so that food we call that in the Philippines Siopao, basically like a meat bun, meat inside a bun, it tastes like a bom
Great as all the others I have seen thus far new to your channel but hilarious.
I really loved this movie. Not only as having Canadian representation, I related a lot to mei during this movie because it really shows how it is for young girls going through puberty.
