      It seems they have covered everything for a license to carrying your toothbrush as well. I understand the safety aspect and security but this also stops those who just can’t afford the costs. The guys did not cover as in other countries the fact that one can use drones under a certain weight and not need a license. I have a lot of spare time and would love to study for the license but no ways can I afford it. Salute.

      This is why South Africa is so far behind the rest of the world. I qualified for a skipper's license for less than R5000, and may carry many passengers on the dangerous see, for less than R5000. Yet there are few sailing accidents. I got a driver's license for a code 11 truck, and may carry freight and friends for way less. Even a PDP cost less than a thousand bucks. But to fly an expensive toy needs a medical, firefighting and radio certificate. At more than twenty times the cost of a skipper's license. And nowhere info of where too start.

    This is an awesome video. Love it. However, I would like to make a suggestion... first step is to go to a ROC because so many ROC's do not accept "all" RPL licenses... I would say if you're in the Western Cape check out which ROC's are in the area and then contact them before going to drone school that will take your money and not give you all the info you need.

    The more videos I watch on the legalities the more I don't want to do it. Someone gifted me an Autel Evo II Pro. They crashed and broke the camera... I'm in the process of sending it to China to get repaired. Now it looks like (to use your racecar metaphor) I'll be racing this Ferrari up and down my driveway as a hobbyest!
    Makes me sad that to use the thing to its full potential I have to basically become a commercial airline pilot and pay R30k on top of it.
    I'm all for safety but wow this is convoluted... Thanks for the information.

    What also makes things difficult, and I understand and agree about safety etc though, is that finding a place, as a hobbyist, that is 50m away from people etc and 10km away from certain facilities is very difficult to find. Also, I would love to one day provide a service but, as commented here, the cost is way too high to start something.

Really found this interview very interesting and I think you've got a winner here! :) Maybe have a look at 30 days of genius series (on UA-cam as well) by Chase Jarvis, to get some ideas for your own version Really think it would make for super content - there are so many talented and knowledgeable pilots out there that we can learn from, just like Riaan?... If I buy a drone as an asset of my own company, get permission from clients to record with it, and only use the footage for my own company's website and advertisements (obviously I'm not charging myself for the footage). Is that now commercial use requiring this myriad of licensing (even while flying it under private pilot restrictions)?

  • @safanza
    @safanza 11 місяців тому +5

    Great video, but the laws in SA is just insane. Using "safety" and "responsibility" as main concerns is not the truth - it's about making money, and protecting special interests (ROC concept is just controlling monopolies). The South African government and key players have mastered the art of monetizing everything to either gain financially personally, or protect special interests. Why a sub 250g drone can be considered a major safety issue if flown within private rules, or FAA guidelines, but used for limited commercial interest is just ridiculous. Just another corrupt country and industry...

      Yes any form of commercial work you would need to have an RPL , if you are whole heartly doing it for free , then yes you need the landowners permission and also take it account properly the people at the wedding too, some people in general dont like or understand drones so there might always be a Karen in the crowd. Charge for travelling costs and not for drone footage. Drone rules are bull and the makers most ptobably copy and pasted them.

    • @webuydronessa

      If the footage is used commercially to advertise ,promote or showcase on a website ,billboard , flyer etc its considered commercial use and gain which make it illegal. If the footage or photos are for your own personal use and not to advertising then by all means.

      Property 24 is a GREAT example almost every single house listing has drone shots in it , if the drone work was done by lets say a "friend" and the estate agent then took the photos and posted them on Property 24 , its considered 100% illegal as the photos are now being used for commerical gain.
