Excellent video! Can you clarify: do you or don’t you need to wait 24 hours for the paint to dry before putting it in the over? I believe towards the end you say you can also just wait an hour for paint to dry. Thanks.
Great question! I wait an hour before painting the top coat so the bottom coat does not smear. I wait 24 hours before baking because I tend to paint thick, and in multiple coats... that said, if you are only painting one coat you can fire it faster than 24 hours. The issue with these paints occurs if they are still wet at all heating them in the oven often causes an air bubble to occur which pops in the oven and ruins what you painted.
You may want to use clear nail polish on top of that when it's dry because nail polish is also enamel paint.Please always wear a mask and have good ventilation in the room when using any enamel paint.
I’ve never tried nail polish because I bake them in the oven to active the glue in the enamel paints so they are permanent. If not baking this might another option to clear coat the paint. Or can you bake it with the nail polish? One interesting note: the paints I use have no fumes at all, they’re water based, so no masking required. On the other hand if you have lots of nail polish using it up is a way to save money. I chip my nails continuously so I’m curious on how long it lasts on a wine glass that’s washed regularly vs a bottle lamp that’s dusted etc?
Sometimes, you need to check the enamel label to make sure it’s for glassware and can be baked in the oven. Brands that I know carry enamels for glass are; Folkart, DecoArt, Pebeo and Marabu. There are probably many more brands.
Should be fine, gas or electric doesn’t matter, and any glass works, as long as it’s not painted by the manufacturer of the bottle already since you won’t know what they painted it with. Make sure the bottle has no lid on it when you bake it. Be sure to use baking enamel non toxic paints like the FolkArt enamel. Make sure to let the paint dry 24 hours or more. Make sure the bottle will fit, that it’s not too tall. Follow the manufacturer’s baking instructions, start with a cold oven & let it cool completely before removing it. I do a lot of wine bottles myself. Best of luck on your creation!

Is there a paint pen you would recommend to write on glass? I want to use a combination of paints and pens. I bought Top Notch but it discolored when heated.
Yes, you need to use an oil based pen, two options: oil based that you can fire (these are thicker though but great for adding names & phrases, many color options) OR oil based pen then paint a clear coat on top before firing to make it permanent, if you do not coat the writing it will wash off. Brands that work: DecoArt Glass Pens are fireable and come in many colors here is one so you can see it: amzn.to/3SGzbRT . Just note if the pen is a translucent or opaque color. You can also use their Ceramic paint Pens on glass and fire too. There are other brands like Pebeo which work well too. Option 2: For oil based pens that you need to coat with clear to make permanent I recommend the Sharpie line, many colors to choose from and many thickness options, I use the Extra Fine tips a lot, for both writing and with painting really thin lines like on a tree branch. I have found no difference in the performance of either type. I like the multi-purpose more only because I paint on other things than just the glasses. Why spend money on two sets of paint when I can just have one that does more!

After you bake them yes you can wash them. The manufacturer says top rack dishwasher safe… but… I’d recommend hand washing & hand wash my own. They are heat set & some dishwashers & hot water settings are pretty high. I do teapots too, boil water directly in them without issue but I do let them cool before I wash them!

If I do multiple layers of the folkart paint, I’ll wait at least 24 hours. If you bake it before, it’s completely dry, the paint will bubble in the oven ruining the piece. Once it’s baked it’s cured. If you have a different question, let me know. I’ll try to answer it as best I can. If you don’t bake the glass the next time you go to wash it some of that paint is going to come off. If you do not paint thick enough, and put it in your dishwasher. A few times it’s going to start to peel because it’s heat setting. The dishwasher is hot. That’s why I put a clearcoat over everything.

The clear coat is optional. I do it because I sell them and want the extra coating for my customers.

Is that washable
After you bake them yes you can wash them. The manufacturer says top rack dishwasher safe… but… I’d recommend hand washing & hand wash my own. They are heat set & some dishwashers & hot water settings are pretty high. I do teapots too, boil water directly in them without issue but I do let them cool before I wash them!
