AWA Nick Bockwinkel's face turn - Winnipeg version Part 1

- AWA Wrestling fans may not know that Nick Bockwinkel's babyface turn in October of 1985 had to be redone for the Winnipeg market. Winnipeg had been part of the AWA territory since the early '70s, but beginning in the summer of 1984, instead of our Winnipeg AWA TV show airing the same AWA squash matches as the AWA TV show in the other AWA cities, we started to have our own squash match TV tapings that replaced them. They were first held at Norberry School, then after a year they were moved to Holy Cross School. They were held on Friday, the day after the AWA card at Winnipeg Arena every third or fourth Thursday. For some inexplicable reason, Greg Gagne stopped being a part of the Winnipeg AWA cards and didn't do the TV tapings, either, around mid-1985. He was still active in the AWA but he stopped coming to Winnipeg. The main version of the Nick Bockwinkel face turn that aired in the United States involved Nick getting involved in a match betwen Greg Gagne and Larry Zbyszko to attempt to take the numbchucks away from Larry, his tag-team partner at the time. So for the Winnipeg tapings, the AWA had to break up Larry and Nick in a way that didn't involve Greg Gagne. And maybe numchucks, too, because I think numbchucks might be illegal in Canada. It's hard to make a comparison for the numchucks, because those became more part of Larry's gimmick as 1986 arrived and went on, and the AWA lost Winnipeg to the WWF in late January 1986. So in Winnipeg, Larry became pissed off that Nick agreed to team with Mad Dog Vachon for a match at the Winnipeg Arena against Russians Boris Zhukov and his manager Chris Markoff.
In part 1, you see the prequel to Nick's actual face turn: Mad Dog Vachon chooses Nick to team up with, you see promos of the two of them, then, finally Larry's negative reaction to Nick teaming up with the Mad Dog. Look for my part 2, where you will see Larry attacking Nick from behind in the ring at the Holy Cross tapings.
Nick Bockwinkle is pure GENIUS on the mic. You BELIEVED in what he was saying. Such a CLASS act.
Nick Bockwinkel on the mic was pure gold!
+Richard Bain As Nick would say..."Indeed Sir"! I had the pleasure of watching Nick on TV on the Island of Oahu back in the later part of the '60's on KGMB Channel 9! He was as mesmerizing on the mic back then as he was in the 70's in The A.W.A. I always followed his career through the "Rasslin Magazines" and then through Cable TV of the late 70's into the media that we have now! I do miss The Federations across the States and all the smaller Territories in between! Nick was Silk on The Mic.....Pure Pontification!! Cheers
Any time Bockwinkel grabbed the mic was a goldmine
As a kid whenever he stepped up to the mic, I would grab a dictionary. I learned so much from him just being completely awesome. The man was gold, on the mic, in the ring, and pure class in real life. RIP Champ!
I remember watching this in the 80's at my grandmother's house with the volume at 11 of 10, and as Mad Dog spoke, my grandmother was so shocked, that she turned off the TV with the comment, "Those hairy animals!"
One other note I must add Mad Dog Vachon at this point was only appearing on AWA cards in Winnipeg and not the rest of the AWA territory, he had just been let go from the WWF but for whatever reason Verne Gagne didn't take him back but the promoters in Winnipeg still saw the value of having him on the cards as the Dog was always a big draw in Winnipeg.
@@Jenjoshstars2012 what business was that?
Sorry to hear Mad Dog passed on today. A legend for certain and thoroughly entertaining. Rest In Peace Mad Dog.
Bobby Heenan said that Mad Dog Vachon was a legit tough guy even talked about the fights he had outside of wrestling
thank-you Mad Dog for providing such great entertainment, say hi to the Crusher for all of us and thank him for us also
I love you man!! RIP my friend!! thank you !!
The 2nd promo Nick Bockwinkle cut was gold!! The Mad Dog was also a great talker. This people is what they mean when they say "talking people into the building". Outstanding.
@DotDotkins i'm a 35 yr old anglo quebecer, subscriber to yr channel, & a big wrestling fan & historian.... first of all, i cannot adequately verbalize my gratitude to you for all the fantastic uploads. pure gold, thank you so much.... verne had a prob with the dog because of his "rebel" ways... i'm sure you're aware of the airplane door story....vachon wasn't a character, that was really him. most p's couldn't handle him, hence the mis-trust. poor dog's been in a wheelchair since 87, hit & run.
Thanks for posting! This is a fascinating insight into AWA history.
I loved the crusher and the brusiers promos, But the mad dog was the best! Always entertaining!
Bockwinkel is the Lex Luther of wrestling
Now I've been a wrestling fan because of my grandfather was a huge wrestling fan,
And my grandfather took me too a wrestling card at the ole Winnipeg Arena in 1975 so that's how long I've been a wrestling fan.
And I am from Winnipeg Manitoba Canada 🇨🇦
كم عمر جدك الان!!
And he was a complete sweetheart! One of the greatest guys you would ever know!
"We may do dat, just dat.." Great stuff. Loved the Mad Dog. And Bockwinkle? One of the greatest heels of the era..easily.
Omg forgot about this too, amazing promos from both. Mad dog “ Bockwinkle you should be six feet underground” wow no one was crazier than Mad Dog.
If Bockwinkel was in the NWA or the WWF in his prime, he'd be as famous as Flair or more. Not to knock the AWA, but the territories dominated by the AWA didn't have the media influence the East or the South had, which is kind of sad because the AWA, in its best years, was as good as the NWA or the WWF.
I honestly felt that Nick could’ve been the million dollar man had he been younger. No disrespect to Ted DiBiase he did very well. I would’ve liked to have seen Nick do that role with his great vocabulary LOL!
A couple of thoughts on this - I assumed that Mad Dog would call on his brother, Butcher Vachon, to team with him. They had held the AWA tag belts in the late 1960s. But Bockwinkel was a great choice. And kudos to Ken Resnick for another solid interview.
Good old maddog. It gets overlooked that in his youth he was an Olympic wrestler in 1948
When interviewing Vachon, Resnick had to kneel down, while Vachon stood on an empty crate to make it appear that they were close in height.
My 5 favorite wrestlers promos
5. Harley Race
4. Roddy Piper
3. Dusty Rhodes
2. Ric Flair
1. Nick Bockwinkel
Lol,Dusty Rhodes could barely SPEAK the only Language that he could articulate in,is GW BUSH your favorite as well?
So, he likes Dusty's interviews? Big deal...Fuck Off, goof.
@@2CHACHOUU Any clue how to use punctuation? Dusty was great. You? Not so much
such a beast on the microphone!!!
I firmly believe: the anchorman from Quahog News( Family Guy) is based on this mustache interviewer.
As a teen I used to fume when I saw Nick Bockwinkle on the TV. A "no good rat" as Vachon says. Now at 67 I savor every word he says. He really was a master of the promo. Lucky to have these video tape transfers. Thank you BeauWorld.
He doesn't get a lot of recognition for his mike skills, but Mad Dog could talk, and a lot of his interviews would leave the listener in stitches.
RIP Nick Bockwinkel
God, Nick was the Man !!!
In the 1960's Mad Dog Vachon was as badass and brutal as any wrestler ever. He was the AWA champ 3 or 4 separate times between 1964-1967.
This was on the 1970s
Bockwinkel and Zbysko, two of the best on the mic from that generation.
He was certainly a class act....especially for a heel. I mean his attitude was pretty clean for a heel. Great champion and master of the pile driver for a finisher. He would have been a great rival to Ric Flair, and Bruno Sammartino.
RIP Mad Dog Vachon!
I would love to see Bockwinkel and Vachon vs Jerry Blackwell and Al Kaisee
This is when wrestling was a true art form.
RIP Mad Dog Vachon&Nick Bockwinkel
RIP Nick Bockwinkel.
Vachon's pine box promo was gold!
i grew up in winnipeg...i remember setting up the chairs and front row for thetapings at both norberry and holy cross
Bockwinkel is the greatest ever IMO.
absolutely. I was gonna say exact same before seeing your comment. Much more believable talker and better wrestler.
I agree. From the mid 1960's through the early 1980's the AWA was as good or better than any other federation.
Pure Gold !!
Wicked Nick and the Dog .A dream team if ever there was one . Or perhaps a nightmare team !
My Top 5 Wrestlers Who Do Promos
5. Hulk Hogan
4. Stone Cold Steve Austin
3. Ric Flair
2. Roddy Piper
1. Nick Bockwinkel
Best promo in wrestling history. No, not Maddog.
Fantstic AWA CLASSICS.
RIP Mad Dog Vachon
Vachon throws a Chair about, then growls 'Thats Right !!! I'm a raving Maniac !!!'
What a way to start a promo ?!! haha Great stuff.
easily my favourite to come out of my hometown (montreal)
...cont.... After seeing him as the likable "cookie monster" face later in his career.
Nick Bockdrinker is interviewed by Ken Beatnik. Does it get any better??
Beatnik?
Ken Resnick was great @ selling in an interview with crazy people... Larry Nelson was great too.
I would've liked to have seen Maurice's earlier career as a bad ass heel as awa champ after seeing him as the lika "cookie monster
LOVE Mad Dog!!
Is there any footage of this match???
Is the match on UA-cam vs the Russians
Mad dog calls Nick weasel! Lol oops.
When Americans didn’t support Russia.
Boring
