I have a Microsoft mini, Bluetooth mouse and keyboard bundle and a portable monitor for less than $500. I use them daily as I work from home and absolutely love it.
It only outperformes the internal drive in the standard M4, but no chance compared to the the speed of the internal storage on the M4 Pro (6400 MB/s write, 5200 MB/s read). The Zike Drive does 3100 MB/s (write) and 3400 MB/s (read) on my Mac mini M4 PRO
Thank you for sharing those specs. I figured as much. I know you are paying $$ for the difference. My whole point is that we can upgrade the storage on the base model and not suffer any speed. I appreciate your comment and support 👍
A good internal 4x PCI interface connected drive is still better than an external SSD! The number of discrete Flash chips (aka NAND) also makes a big difference as well with the internal setup Apple offers. The low end system is not as good as the mid and higher storage options so your lack of performance is likely do to that. The good news is there are a few 3rd party replacement drives just coming out now with 1TB and even 2TB options and I think a 4TB is on the radar as well! I would recommend you do a fair comparison between the two drives of the same size. And don’t forget the boot drive will impact the performance so you need to setup the external as a bootable drive for a fair test as well making it the startup drive at boot.
Those are all good suggestions. For me, in this video, I'm showing how one can upgrade storage without performance loss on the base model. The affordability of all those upgrades is out of my budget for now. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I appreciate your support! 👍
Interesting. I like the idea of portable monitors. I looked it up, a Macbook Pro with M4 starts at $1600 and to get 1TB it's $1800. I wonder what the speeds are on the MacBook Pro?
Hi thanks for showing the speed of the external drive. Would you be able to provide links to the external monitors and other accessories (including the specific M2 drive) mentioned here? I only see the links to enclosure, and the phone drive)
@@mipad553 That's a great question and here is what I found out. Apple previously supported eGPUs on Intel-based Macs running macOS High Sierra 10.13.4 and later. However, with the transition to Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3 chips), eGPU support has been completely dropped.
I came here for the drive speed demonstration and you delivered! Thank you for this! Great video all the way through. Looking forward to seeing you more. Subscribed (...and I hardly EVER subscribe)!
Hi I’ve recently upgraded from an old 2014 mbp stuck on big sur, to a m4 mini running sequoia. I also bought sabrent tb4 dock and ssd enclose and nvme m.2 Samsung ssd. Now the ssd is not new, I’ve had that a couple of years. But I have discovered that sequoia is very unreliable with respect to accessing any type of external disk. Big sur is flawless, no problems anywhere. Researching this, I found the same applies to sonoma, so what is going on here. What is your experience in this regard and is there anything that can be done about this other than waiting for Apple to fix these issues. I have also found many other bugs in sequoia, but for the purposes of this post, I’m just focusing on accessing external disks. The biggest problem I’ve seen is when performing write operations. When I first connected my dock/disks to the m4 mm, dragged a folder to write to the disk, I immediately got a generic error, something like “an error occurred”. And no, it wasn’t an NTFS disk, it was a freshly formatted exfat disk.
I wish I had an answer for you. Everything is running really smooth for me. I'm using a Samsung Evo M2 SSD. I think I would look for issues with the enclosure and the dock. If you had another computer you can connect them with and see if it has an issue on something else, that would be the best way to test it. The only other option I could think of would be to call Apple tech support and have them walk you through some tests. Sorry I'm not much help here other than to say that I don't have any issues with my setup. My enclosure is connected directly to the M4 and is not going through a dock.
@@GOTgoodoldtech-1964 Thanks, but as I said, all my kit works flawlessly on my 2014 mbp running big sur, so it has to be sequoia. I've already been in touch with Apple and submitted bug reports to their feedback process, just awaiting some kind of response in the form of new releases, which ain't gonna be rapidly forth-coming.
I guess it could be worth it. Your whole setup is at least $800 less than a comparable MacBook Pro. Con I see there is no battery power so it's tethered unlike a Laptop.
I believe you're using 256g Mac mini m4? those are really slower compared to the 512 and 1tb internal drives.there are cheaper external enclosures .aside from 40gbp enclosure the ssd you match it with matters.
@dodielegaspi5646 I've heard that before. I watched a couple of comparisons between the 256 and 512 and there was very little performance difference. If you get the M4 Pro or Max you will definitely see the difference. I've used cheaper enclosures but the problem is they're either loud because of fans or slow. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I appreciate your support!👍

Very nice. The mini's are powerful and underrated. It beats buying an expensive laptop with less power. 👍

Exactly! This is why I bought the Mini, much more affordable and its size makes it portable.

Does mac support egpu

@dawnrazor Gotcha, it's not fun being at there mercy waiting for an update fix. Ugh..
damn, I like the mouse but the link shows a different one.
I couldn't find the one I have so I replaced it with one of similar specs. Sorry about that. I bought mine over a year ago.

You're right about the untethered laptop being more convenient. The setup works great in my RV and when I'm visiting family for extended periods.

I have both and there isn’t that much difference, I have a recording studio and a video recording setup.
@hardlines2635 I've seen other videos reporting that same thing. Not much difference until you get the Pro models. Thanks for sharing. 👍
