- Going through the Battle of Alberta in a video today made me want to do a video on the Flames goaltender during that era.

A Flames legend, without his play they don't win the Cup
👍
He also won the Conn Smythe when the wings won it all that one year. It was a great team
in front of him sure, but he played his ass off.
When I was a little kid Mike Vernon was my first favourite Flame. Mostly because his name was Mike like myself lol. I have a huge collection of his hockey cards.
Me too. He’s why I wanted to be a goalie and nothing else.
Whenever I think of Mike Vernon, I remember when he won the Cup with Detroit and broke out a huge cigar on the ice during the presentation/celebration.
"Even 6'0" is short"
*cries in 5'6.5"*
*laughs in Nathan Gerbe*
*slaps down a Peter Ing hockey card**BINGO!*
My best friend in junior high and senior high school in Calgary was a goalie, and he played in the same Bantam, Midget and Junior leagues as Mike Vernon. I think he even went to the same hockey school in the summer. My friend was a good goalie and made it as far Junior B. He was hoping to get picked up by the Wranglers but wasn't quite good enough. Anyway, I remember my friend telling me that Mike Vernon was an excellent goalie, even better than himself, and told me to watch out for him because he had NHL potential. Vernon did make it onto the Wranglers, then the Flames, and the rest is history.
Time for player history class with THG!
The fight with Roy !
The weird thing about that is that they were pretty good friends during their careers but choose to put on a show for the fans
Mike told me Roy had long fingernails...like claws...lol
One thing I’ll always take away from the 97 red wings is the dude holding up the sign “Vernon: I apologize”
As a Canucks fan in the 80s this man pissed me off to no end. But I do have a hell of a lot of respect for him and his amazing career. Thank you for this
as a habs fan, I concur .
Vid makes it sound like everyone in Calgary hated Vernon when he left, but that wasn't so. Many Flames fans were sad to see him leave and we're excited to get him back when he returned. I think it was just a "vocal minority" thing. Vernon is a legend in Calgary today, the Flames even retired his number.
I was very thankful to have Vernon on the Wings!
I got to serve Vernon plenty of times at Smuggler's Inn in Calgary in the late '80s. One day, I got a phone call at the front desk. Mike Vernon called me to get a waitress's phone number. I couldn't give it out though, it was against company policy.
Inducted in the HoF in 2023 and can’t be happier as a Wings fan. What he did for us in ‘97 will never be forgotten. Not just putting up his career-best numbers en route to the Conn Smythe but for that famous left he served up to Roy.
Listening to him give interviews about that game is pretty funny as he admits he was pretty reluctant to leave the crease when the fight broke up but felled compelled to. Then Adam Foote laughed at him when he saw it was Vernon wrestling with him near center ice. And after the fight he was also annoyed and in disbelief that he wasn’t kicked out of the game and had to go back in because he was exhausted.
I'm still wearing a pair of pro returned bauer reactors from his second stint with Calgary. I cant get rid of them cuz of the nostalgia and memories had with em! I am literally wearing pads from the 90s and get trolled all the time, just something about that bauer reactor style pad is so nice for a hybrid goalie or standup like myself.
When I picture Vernon in Calgary it will always be with the ccm player helmet cage. I forgot he worn a more modern mask at the end in Calgary.
Brett Patterson Same. Didn't watch him as I wasn't alive at the time, but all of the games I've seen of him are with that cage and it's very iconic.
He also wore 30 for his first stint and then number 29 the second time around.
Dude Great video the details are very cool
One of my favorite players. He got harassed so much by the Canadiens during those 89’ finals but stayed clutch. And as a wings fan I loved seeing him fight Roy. Total stud
I wish we could see the return of Vernon or Richter stature goalies again. So much more fun to watch flopping about
I smell an entire video on small of stature goalies. Vernon was just one of many back then. John Vanbiesbrouk comes to mind as well. He was just 5’8”. Panger, and Alain Chevrier as well.
Arturs Irbe was 5'8
Chris Osgood was 5'10
John Vanbiesbrouck
was 5'8
Andy Moog
was 5'9
Sam Sneed And how many people now are gonna be like "yup, Chris Osgood, 400+ wins, too short to play" :D
Pelle Lindbergh was 5'9, Grant Fuhr was 5'11. Curtis Joseph was 5'11. Dominik Hasek was barely 6'0 (182 cm).
Trust me being 5’9” as a goalie today sucks. I’ve had a coach tell me “he can’t teach height” 😂😂😂 best thing is to just laugh it off.
It really does suck. I feel like what most of my goalie coaches have taught me were built specifically for goalies over 6 feet. It is possible to be a blocking/box goalie under 6 feet (Jhonas Enroth) comes to mind. However it's very tough. Your angles and positioning have to be absolutely perfect. I think this is a good thing though because smaller goalies will be a lot more self taught, and it could lead to more unique and creative save selections in the future. It's going to be a while until size becomes more diversified though.
Nathaniel Cava Lol that's simultaneously funny and difficult. But, I think you'll find you can overcome the adversity.
A Flames legend, awesome player, and a great man. I had the pleasure of meeting him in 1992 when travelled from New York to Calgary to see the Flames play in the Saddledome. He may have won more Cups if the Flames had not been in the same division as the Oilers. He silenced his critics and earned redemption with the cup win with Detroit in 1997. He definitely had some classic playoff series against Patrick Roy during his career.
As a 🦈 fan.... In 96/97 we got this all star goalie named Ed Belfour.
He threw a tantrum and behaved like a child for being in San Jose and treated the team and fans with nothing but disrespect with his game.
So... When I heard we got Vernon fresh off ending the great drought i wasn't holding my breath that this other Red Wings star goalie was gonna play in San Jose
BUT. Mike Vernon was a true Champion. He put on his pads and had the best games he could for us bay area hockey fans. He stood on his head and kept that glove up. I will always love Mike Vernon for his behavior as a true champion.
He's borderline Hall of Famer and was at the top of his game when compared to other goalies who are in the Hall of Fame in that era. Two Stanley Cups and Conn Smythe is some hardware to make a case. Should add in his #30 is retired by the Calgary Flames.
Even us Oilers fans respected Vernon
Mike Vernon should of been inducted into the hockey hall of fame a long time ago. . Two Stanley Cup rings and and Conn Smythe Trophy is pretty good!
Your career videos are awesome! In general your videos keep me sane in this time without hockey. As an Avs fan I would love to see a career video of Milan Hejduk!
I wish he played in the Winter Classic for Detroit .
On Mike Vernon’s second season (1983-1984) his Goals against average was above 20
89 GLOVE SAVE STAN SMYLE WHEN I STARTED WATCHING
imho, one of the most underrated goalie to have played
Vernon always been my favorite goaltender with Detroit. The underdog. I had two cards of him as 5'9" and 6'0". Interesting how Trevor Kidd would unseat him yet Trevor Kidd wasn't all that great.
The fight with Patrick Roy is my favorite Vernon memory - he was small but had a lot of heart.
Thank you! Now, on to Bill Ranford!
good summary of a career
Saw Mike Vernon play when I watched the Habs play the Flames at the forum. Got respect for him and being a good goalie
Selfishly Id love to see one on Byron Dafoe 👍 Awesome video
Do Osgood next!?
Cigar Vernon should be a super stacked Pokémon card
Welcome to the Hall of Fame, Mike 🏆🏆🏒
One of Detroit's biggest mistakes was not keeping Vernon. How many more cups would they have?
I believe they were thinking that Osgood was 9 years younger and had more time in front of him than Vernon. And Osgood did help backstop them to the cup in 98. And of course, 3 years later, Osgood isn't re-signed, and the Wings get 37-year-old Dominic Hasek.
Big Ghey Vernie!!!!
Osgood and Vernon talk about a goaltending tandem
Steve Chiasson haven't heard that name in awhile. R.I P.
Vernon should be in the Hall imo.
I only have bad memories of Vernon (Avs fan). That being said, he was a hell of a tendy and always made it a great game. I now have a lot more respect for him. Thanks Shannon.
Die-hard Flames fan here. The one thing that never ceases to amaze me is how, to this day, how Vernon gets bashed in Calgary. One doesn't win two Stanley cups by being a "Bum".
Won’t ever forget those playoff saves on the rockem sockem
Shadow has asked me to negotiate on his behalf about a compromise on this issue of "Making videos during Catnap Time"
never heard anything bad about him-2 cups nice long career....
So, let me get this straight. In his first run in Calgary, some Flames "fans" dog on their native son so much, that heckling & hassling Vernon's innocent parents in the stands was a repeated occurrence? It's considered fair game & acceptable? What kind of piece of garbage, low-class human being do you have to be to resort to such boorish, moronic (& probably drunk) behavior? Are there any those louts here in the Comments section who where those "fans" in the stands back then I wonder? If so, justify the behavior & logic to me. That just floors me.
Four great post-season runs. How many netminders from that era had winning post-season records and a better Sv% compared to the regular season. Analytic guys may poo-poo the term "clutch", but Vernie was clutch (especially with Roy or Fuhr at the other end of the ice).
Hey, Hockey Guy, would you please do a video on why Chris Osgood is NOT in the HOF? When you compare stats with him and HOF members Mike Vernon and Grant Fuhr, Osgood's stats are better. I'm not saying that those two do not belong in the HOF, I just think that Chris Osgood belongs there too. And I am not a Chris Osgood or Detroit Red Wings fan. I just don't understand the snub.
Mike Vernon is another fine example that you don't need size to win Stanley Cups and be a great goalie.
I wonder how many goalies have won more playoff games than regular season games in a particular season?
Life long Canucks fan here, and you have made me think of Vernon in different terms. Keep these coming!
Wings fans will always love and have mad respect for Vernon. Bringing the cup back to Detroit and winning the Conn Smyth cemented his part in the Red Wings history. If we had a “ring of honor” he would be included.
Go Flames!!!
.890 save percentage lol, thank the Oilers for that.
A individual his size would NOT be able to play Goalie in The NHL today. Times have changed. The Goaltenders are way bigger in height and size
He won two Stanley Cups...
Imho he seriously deserves HOF consideration.
I'm surprised Shannon didn't wear a retro Flames jersey.
vernon vs ranford whos better ?
Will you do a career of Rod Brindamour?
In my mind vernon most underrated goalie of all time. However didnt really relize he didnt have a ton of big win seasons. But nevertheless!
Need a career of Fred Braithwaite
How does a player with a Conn Smythe win and two Stanley Cups not make it to the HOF?
I know mike Vernon
Do felix the cat potvin next
desmith is listed at 6ft
hall of fame? yes.
It's amazing how much taller the average goalie is now. Back in the 80's Mike Liut, Patrick Roy, and Ron Hextall looked like giants compared to everybody else. I remember Liut and Don Beaupre in Washington being described as Mutt and Jeff.
Here, a guide to what Bundesligateam you should cheer for:

Btw, my team is BVB. They are in second place atm and might have a run for the title this year. They are playing an aggressive offensive fotball wich attracts a lot of fans and it is (almost) always entertaining.
Double post so no one misses it. Enjoy your Bundesliga tomorrow!
Great analysis. Vernon was in the NHL so long it seemec for me he was just part of the furniture. Dizzying highs of spectacular goaltending stretches (89, 86 I would say, 97) but when he was off he was really off, and he had some bad lows. 1991 Game 7 Oilers, getting lit by the Devils in 95(though credit he got to the finals) 94 three straight OT losses to blow that series. You look at that Flames team from the mid 80s to 1994...they shouldve won another Cup...or at least made it to another final
How tall is Stalock? I'll have to look
Put up all the stats you want, Vernon will always be remembered for his fight with Patrick Roy.
And his epic tilt with Curtis Joseph. Social distancing fighting before its time...
Wins cups with two different teams. Pretty impressive
Played a hybrid style of stand-up and butterfly because of his height. Incredible glove hand and my favorite goalie of all time.
The only Time to ever win the Cup in Montreal at the Form other times beat Montreal but not on there home ice only Calgary 1989.Mike Vernon 2 Stanley cups has he won the MVP beat up Patrick Roy ,but in all fairness to Patrick he wasn't beating up his wife or fighting Chris Osgood. He had some good years but the years that they didn't win in the playoffs you can't just blame the goldie it's a team game. Was sad to hear that he was treated like that his parents like that.what's the saying thanks you get for bringing Calgary they're only cup plus without burning they wouldn't have won the cup in 89. Vernon was always a goodI think you should be in the Hall of Fame and I think he was one of the best Goldie's if not the best in his time. I think you should have won the Vezina in 89.but look at Calgary's I got rid of them and they never want another cup since. Vernon won the Jennings trophy and was an All-Star for many years as well. Al McKenna's said that Vernon should have been the MVP in 89 not him. I think Detroit made a horrible mistake getting rid of Vernon.
What happened to the favorite all time players series
