VLC has loads of functionality, but the UI for anything other than video and audio playback is pretty strange and not at all intuitive, which I think is why so many people don't realise it's even there.
When you not at home in the weekend and not have internet, you might gonna start messing around even with the smallest things on your laptop, just because you're getting bored. This is how I know about a lots of things in VLC ‒ I just had my laptop, no internet, and some low quality stuff copied off of some cheap VCD discs. 😁
I think they just want to make it look as simple as possible by not overloading it with buttons and context menus. The majority of users will only ever care about media playback and nothing else.
VLC can also act as a streaming server for other computers. This was more useful in the past when you had devices that weren't as powerful you could convert incoming video to let them play it back on a different codec or size. You could also use this for a live stream where multiple computers at the location can connect to the VLC server and all view the video in sync.
What a good video. I’ve used VLC since it first came out over a decade ago . It has become a powerful one stop shop for all things video and codec related and I love the features you have show. Thank you.
This was a great video... I was familiar with a few features you pointed out in VLC, but I didn't necessarily know how to use them, and you also showed me other things that the program can do that I was not aware of. This is fantastic information that could come in handy when doing a lot of things. Thank you for taking the time in creating this video. I know in order for you to demonstrate these features you must have spend a lot of time tinkering with things and figuring out What is What and how does it work, and is it worth adding to a video. Again thanks for your dedicated time on the subject. 🙂
Another handy tip is to go in to the preferences and untick the box that says 'resize interface to video size' then re size VLC on your desktop to a size you like, exit the program. In future every time you start VLC it will open to the size you set. This is handy if you have other windows open and don't want VLC to fill the screen every time with a large resolution video. A simple double click on the player window will take it full screen and back to the size you set again before exit, if needed.
Hi Brian, Great video. The VLC 'record desktop' function works but doesn't capture my mouse pointer. Is there anyway to do this in VLC? If not, is there any other software to so this? What capture software did you use to make this video? Thanks in advance.
I knew almost all of these, and I know enough about VLC to say that there are probably well over 100 more features that you wanted to skip. Good job on this video, it had to be made. Probably well over 75% of the people who watched this, didn't know about these features. Also, even though I say I knew about these features, that doesn't mean I was able to benefit from them. Watching you lay out the steps needed to use these features is something I really found of great interest. Thanks for the content. Keep up the good work. בס'ד
I've been trying to use this to compress videos in some cases it made the videos bigger have you got a video on how to use it for video compression thanks always look forward to your videos
I know there's a lot of videos that show you how to create lossless videos and make them smaller. It's just not possible without losing quality in the video. Any video you make smaller will impact on the quality. No matter what, it is possible to make a video smaller without losing too much quality and VLC can do this pretty well. Made a video on it a long time ago
Another trick is it's command line interface which lets you make changes remotely. I use the following batch script. start "" "C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" %1 --video-x=1600 --video-y=400 --width=300 --height=300 --fullscreen --no-video-title-show --no-embedded-video --no-qt-fs-controller exit Leave the batch script on your desktop, drag videos onto it (or run the batch script). It will open up a playlist and controls on one monitor and run the video full screen on a second. Excellent for presentations when you don't want the controls or timeline on top of the movie.
I use VLC on my Amazon Fire TV to stream video from my computer. It's is quite nice when used. (video recorded from Hauppage TV stick). I have to convert files to MP3 to get the fast forward controls to work right.

A great video showing why VLC is nearly useless, unless you use it all the time. So complicated. There are too many unexplained options. VLC needs an alternative interface with preset defaults for the most common tasks a casual user might want to perform.
What i got from this comment is that you dont use vlc all that much, and because of that you find it useless due to not knowing how to use it. Thats your problem, not the applications. who told you vlc was a casual video player? The only reason you should download vlc, is so that you can utilize its functions... Stupid comment. If you really wanted to know what a program was capable of, you would read the manual or wiki (which vlc has!)
Been using the VLC conversion on UA-cam full albums that users have downloaded on there channel. The downloads are almost always MP4 video. So i convert the MP4 to MP3 then put the MP3 into Audacity, and can then add it to a thumb drive. The thumb drive has too be in FAT to play in my KIA. Not sure why NTSC format doesn't work, probably because of the file size. with the FAT it only handles files to 4mb
Yes you can use your mouse scroll wheel for Up/Down volume, Also If you want to increase it without editing software then, in VLC click Tools, Preferences, bottom left click All, then choose Audio from the left menu and there you can use the Gain etc.. to adjust the audio of the file you wish to play louder etc..

Here's another neat trick - VLC can encode commercial media which is legal, my last boss at HMV suggested otherwise and I've yet to get further employment, however with some commercial media (mainly new movie title) there is a problem with playback (sometimes) so suggest you always use Win 5k for perfect playback. I've found the video effects feature useful for old home video. Is there a way to just export the whole movie with your tweaks without hitting record and letting the file play real time?
Boosting audio is pretty complicated and needs to be done correctly. Otherwise it will sound real bad, but good microphone is a good starting point sound cards are another option, but a good USB audio device is pretty cheap and gives good quality audio using its own sound card built into the device. DAC
If you find soundtracks drowning out speech (CW shows are especially notorious for this) then note that speech is a midrange value. The leftmost sliders are bass range. If you fiddle with the sliders to the right of that, pull them down, you will suppress the lower-toned music which is what is muddying and obscuring your voices. Try bumping up the middle sliders a bit. The far right sliders are your treble/tweeter/high tones. Anyways, you don't need special doodads, you just need to experiment. Play with it and listen to what is happening.
That is not an equaliser job. The next tab shows "compressor" That is the tool to use for this problem. Within user defines limits it will lower the volume of loud passages and amplify the soft ones.
No it won't. DRM built into modern windows prevents that. I use a $25 HDMI capture stick plugged into a usb port which shows as a camera. Then play the protected content to the capture stick rather than a screen and then record the hdmi captured video. Quality depends on the HDMI capture capabilities though.
Wow I never knew, this makes me rethink VLC. Thanks Brian! The logo thing got my attention now I just need to now how to create a logo. Puzzle thing is also interesting believe it or not.

I'd settle for some basic functions.. like being able to pause/resume a video with the mouse (left clicking anywhere on the video), the way PotPlayer does it.

Vlc is an absolute gem, it's my go-to videoplayer! I have used it as well for casting video from my pc or Nas to my tv with Chromecast.
Thanks for watching
Can you covert 4X3 to widescreen video clips with VLC ?
They have a pretty good help page check on their site and it should tell you what it can do and what it can't do
I have camcorder footage recorded in 16/9 .when I try to record to dvd it comes out 4/3 is there any way to fix this?
You can also stream IP cams from CCTV/Security cameras.
Yeah I've done that before. Worked pretty well. I might make a video on that. Thanks for reminding me
Finally I can record my desktop correctly. Thx Britec09 :) One problem I have with VLC is on opening it always has the check mark on view always on top and I want it always unchecked.
Pretty sure you could fix that
@@Britec09 I tried but no go.
I have a problem with VLC and UA-cam where the video will only stream at 720, even though it is a 1080 or 1440 video. Nothing I do like setting the video to 1080p works. Don't know if it is VLC or something UA-cam has done. It is the latest version of VLC.
Probably some sort of restriction on how large you can stream videos if I have VLC
I can't seem to get VLC to play UA-cam links at all anymore.
Great video.👍
Thanks!
Is it possible to alter the quality of the video when you are streaming in VLC?
I am not sure I've been 7:20p is maximum but I could be wrong
Thank you for this video
Can you make a video on Media Player Classic?
I'll see what I can do when I get back from my holiday
Thanks, Ol' Sport! Hope you're doing well across the ocean.
I am doing perfectly fine. Thank you very much for asking. Have a nice day and put a couple of shrimp on the barbie
Hi do you have a fix for a problem that everyone I know has had and that is Microsoft Edge not opining or doing anything when you click on it this is happening on w 10 and 11.
Make sure Windows is fully updated and download the latest version of edge and your problem should be resolved
@@Britec09 I did do that but I think it was an update that caused the problem I had to do a reset on the system and edge started working again. Only last night it happend to a friend's lap top and I had to do the same thing and do a full reset to fix this problem after trying trouble shooting Microsoft store redownloading edge resetting edge in setting apps etc I even did cmd dism health which both systems passed. may be this is somthing to look into?
I'd settle for some basic functions.. like being able to pause/resume a video with the mouse (left clicking anywhere on the video), the way PotPlayer does it.
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Ciao , istallato VLC e inserito un DVD film video ma non funziona sai dirmi se hanno tolto la visione x DVD . Grazie
Likes my VLC. Good video.
Good video, but it still lacks the features that the old video cassettes (VHS) had: forward and backward, showing the images quickly, (ff and rev buttons, remember?). I never understood why digital video doesn't have these facilities.
Does the VLC app have the ability to tell me if a formatted video is playing all 6 channels of sound that it was formatted for?
Puzzle Game: grandchildren entertainment.
Take a still from a video of them, and turn it into a puzzle for them to solve. Them take time to talk about what was going on that day.
*LOVE IT!!!*
You can turn their favourite movie into a puzzle. I'm pretty sure they would love it
I've been trying to figure out why Windows Media Player won't play an MP4 but VLC will. I get the audio only in WMP no video.
QMPlay2 on Linux is my Preferred Player..its the only player I know of that loops video seemlessly and plays the next videos on the playlist quickly and nicely. Great for Digital Signage.
Software on Linux is pretty limited. In my opinion, Windows is better for software
@@Britec09 You have not been in the Linux world lately have you?

Does anyone know if it’s possible to play more than one video at a time using VLC like you can with QuickTime? As I can only play one video I tend to use it less than I do are the media players. If anyone knows, I would appreciate feedback thank you.
Yes, you can play more than one video at a time with VLC
@@Britec09 thanks for the reply, much appreciated. Would you know how to go about doing it? Each time I try to open the new video, the current one playing automatically shuts. I looked through all the settings and nothing seems to allow this. I currently use on 16 inch MacBook Pro with the new Apple silicone M1 chip which is a powerhouse of a computer.

You should do a video on PotPlayer, the amount of features including video recording is unbelievable.
I will make a video on top player when I get home from my holiday
When I take a snapshot the resulting file has no extension so I have to add .png on the end.
I would like that Awesome VLC Media Player Tip and Trick that allows it to play .mp3 and other audio formats over a LAN from a NAS without skipping chopping and stuttering. Still happens, its not a Cache problem and it seems to happen to quite a few people, so far (many years) VLC seem to ignore it and the online FAQ's and forums do not seem to help. Media player has no probs playing identical files without problems, ditto my old Nero player. The ones you presented here were Awesome!
I appreciate that. Walter

I used to always use this, but I started getting a bug where music would just freeze for a bit, continue, freeze, repeat, and the only way to fix it was resetting my preferences. It just got too annoying for me to deal with.
Vlc is an absolute gem, it's my go-to videoplayer! I have used it as well for casting video from my pc or Nas to my tv with Chromecast.
I also like the dead simple controls, like Space, Plus and Minus and F (full screen).
There is only one item still on my Vlc wish list: when double clicking on a video file to play, I wish the play window would pop to front, on top of all the other windows. I know I can set Vlc to Always On Top, but that's not what I am aiming for. Anyone?
I can get it to record desktop, and I can get it to play the disc - but not at the same time, please help, thank you.
VLC is a fantastic player especially for its zoom and slow motion; most other players only have one or the other feature. BUT when will it ever be able to play BD movies?
BD movies. Not sure what BD movies are
@@Britec09 Like DVDs, short hand for Blu Ray movies. Who shouldn't know this by now?

Do you mean the video goes out of sync?
@@Britec09 No, video goes black. After the reset, it is back to normal. I've done the usual recommendations, and I am suspecting a memory fault somewhere (RAM or in video card).
