The US men's version launch got delayed, so I ordered the women's version a full-size up and it fits perfect. Took it out on a test 12-mile run yesterday and it took a bit to get used to the high stack, but I got a hang of it soon enough and really enjoyed the run. It really is fast. It's probably the biggest and bulkiest trail shoe I've tried on, but it's even lighter than my Peregrine 13. The lockdown took a little work as the minimal heel can cause slippage. I had to stop to re-lace several times to find the perfect balance between a secure lockdown at the heel/mid-foot and all-round comfort but, when I finally did, the ride was magical. It felt so good to feel that trademark Lightstrike Pro bounce, energy return, responsiveness, and protection on the trails.
Being a huge fan of Lightstrike Pro midsole foam on all the Adizero road shoes I have (multiple pairs of the PXS and PX2S, Adios Pro 3, Takumi Sen 8~10, Boston 12, and Adios 8), I've been waiting for it to get implemented in the Terrex trail shoes for quite some time now, and it has definitely been worth the wait. I've tried various carbon-plated trail shoes and they never clicked with me. I've become convinced that a carbon plate is just not necessary in trail running shoes and could actually become a hindrance. The implementation of the plastic Energy Rods is perfect on the Agravic Speed Ultra. It provides the ideal balance between stability, flexibility, and propulsion for the trails.
This is undoubtedly the highest stack trail shoes I've ran in, so I was a little cautious on the technical sections of the trails I ran in yesterday - especially going down steep hills, then I came to feel how stable and even how nimble it is. As the run progressed, I became more confident and picked up the pace with confidence. Living in SoCal, the trails I run regularly are generally the smoothened hard-packed dirt/gravel type, but I seek out the steep hills and woods that have rocky and very uneven terrains. The ASU handled them all with ease although I'll still need to get more comfortable with really technical sections. It feels like I have something like the Adios Pro 3 on my feet even though the feet sit below a good chunk of the foam. Once I start running, I realize that I'm not as far off the ground as I initially felt. After a few more 10~15 mile runs, I'm sure I'll feel very comfortable about taking on the technical sections as well.
As for running on the more flattened and straight-ahead dirt/gravel trails, the ASU reminded me of what running on the road is like with the Adios Pro 3 and Prime X Strung, although the overall feel/ride is still quite different. It was dreamy good. I'd look at my watch and be surprised how fast I was going and with a lower HR than I expected. Going uphill felt effortless compared to most other trail shoes I have or have used in the past. As of now, going fast downhill on uneven and rocky technical trails is the only thing that I'm not comfortable with - YET. I just need to get used to the high stack and I'm sure the ASU will handle it fine even if that won't be what it's best at.
I'm extremely happy with the ASU after the first run. A little more reinforcement and/or padding around the heel collar would have been nice - not so much for more comfort but better lockdown. It'll take me a while to always lace up with the perfect balance between lockdown and comfort. Until then, I get the feeling I'll need to stop a few times during the warmup phase to re-lace, which isn't the end of the world but is a bit annoying. The outsole lugs aren't aggressive but the traction seems excellent. I haven't really pushed it yet but, for such low lugs, the grip felt really good and was great for the few asphalt sections I ran on. It'll be great for road-to-trail excursions although it is first-and-foremost a trail shoe.
Finally, a true trail supershoe and without a carbon plate, which makes the ASU even more "super". I plan to get the men's version in TTS to go along with the women's version I got because, well, this is one of those rare shoes when one pair just isn't enough to have around.
