- The 24 Hours of Le Mans is arguably the world's best known automobile race. Run annually since 1923, it features motorsports' top drivers circling the legendary Circuit de la Sarthe over and over for 24 hours straight. It's a grueling and exhausting competition on one of the most dangerous racetracks around. We talked to 2016 winner Neel Jani who took us through each and every turn.

24 Hours Of Le Mans Champion Breaks Down The World's Most Famous Race | Turn By Turn - Спорт
2016 might be the most heart wrenching moment in LeMans for the way Toyota came so close to the victory and lost.
What about Ken Miles though
@@CheriptheRipper Facepalm, you're right. Denied victory because he was few meters closer to the start finish than his teammate.
@@MHassan1986 do you know of any other noticeable le mans moments? I've never watched it, and after watching the ford vs ferrari movie I wanted to watch this year's event but apparently it's scrapped.
@@CheriptheRipper 2011 was an interesting year for audi. Alan mcnish's early massive crash, then dumais crashing the second audi in the middle of the night, leaving one audi to battle against the 3 Peugeots for the rest of the race was quite exciting to watch. The thing is though most 24 hour races have their own crazy story, like the daytona 24h that stands out I think it was also 2011,where ganassi racing went like 2 laps down at the beginning of The race to change a gearbox and then blitzed the rest of the race and won, or the insane corvette battle and photo finish at the end of the 2016 daytona 24h
@@CheriptheRipper 2018 was actually a lot of fun too despite it basically being Toyota vs Toyota. It seemed like the race was trending towards the No.8 car placing 2nd because they had a stop-go penalty and were over 2 minutes behind the No.7 car. Then Alonso and Nakajima pulled insane night stints closing the gap down to 40 seconds, bringing the car back into competition and eventually going on to win the race that year.
I was a lot more entertained than I was expecting that year.
There are many more historic moments, but that's a more recent one that I think will get underlooked a lot. For more drama, you could look at the Mercedes CLR flips.
Love 2 last sentences. You can't win Le Mans. Le Man's chooses who to win
They say that about Indianapolis as well, and Bathurst. Its a theme common to endurance racing, and a big reason why its so easy to get romantic about it. I endurance racing had a bigger following here in the states.
So it's like "man not choose the car, the car choose the man"
There’s a good documentary following Audi, Jason statham narrates it and in his words “Le man is a harsh mistress and she will remind you she plays no favourites”
So poetic
A father-son pairing once won Le Mans in 1950, but the funny thing is that the dad did most of the driving, 23 hours and 30 minutes, only handing the car to his son mid-race for a food break. What a f*cking legend lol
1953 winners was complitly drunk when they drived.
Alegendly
and few years latter, this father (pierre leveque) died at le mans on a horrific crash (more than 90 peoples killed)
@@olivierb9716 Wrong father, I'm talking about Louis Rosier on this one
@@ThePapaja1996 Can't forget about that one 😂
Brilliant! Great trivia I will remember!
Bruh i tried to do a 90 minutes of Le mans on my Sim rig just 2 days ago, with only 10 minutes left I cramped my left foot Lmao
Your profile pic makes this comment a Lot better
I tried to simulate 24 hours of Le Mans in 24 minutes and on the 3rd lap my nose started bleeding
Bruh I tried to simulate the 24hr Le Mans and after 24 mins of racing, I pooped my pants. I couldn't hold it in.
On a side note, anyone know how to clean "dirt" strains from a bucket seat?
I was leading LMP, but I had a power hit about 3.5 hours in
I tried to do the full 24 hours in gran turismo a couple days ago, farthest in I got was 3 and a half hours. It’s insane how straining it is
Sucks for the people that only found out about Le Mans after the movie. They've been living under a rock & missing the greatest race in motorsport
I absolutely agree, they've missed out the greatness that is the endurance racing world
I agree
Consider them lucky to be able to experience the race for the first time with newfound awe and wonder
I missed out. I have loved watching racing since that movie
It had to do with marketing. Even you actually succeed in europe, if you not making headlines in America in particular, you'll not getting the "hype" that everyone looking for. Hell why did NASCAR become sensation in mid 2000's?
I'm glad more people are into endurance racing after the Ford vs Ferrari film
Agreed!
I memorize every corner after playing several times in real race 3. It is my most favourite track in the whole world.
same lol
real race 3 is amazing.
On the Monday after the Virtual Le Mans I managed to do a 2:49 with the McLaren P1GTR
@@juanin200 try 919 hybrid tribute on RR3, it's insane
@@thejaiz8564 I'm trying to advance through the Motorsports categories and the Evo is such an expensive car, I can't quite get the gold for it yet
"You dont win Le Mans... Le Mans lets you win"
That was a nice one
1:43 "I'm going up and down side to side like a roller coaster
Lando the king
So nice to see Neel, one of the coolest drivers.
I loved the commentary “the Mercedes has taken off” 😂😂
Mark Webber was the driver
I must go, my planet needs me.
I was really hoping he would talk more about the right racing line and brake points for some different cars.
If youre into that look up David Perels Onboard Story videos. He walks you over moves and strategy of races and stints. Has nice cockpit cam footage. He races GT3 cars
He's only driven LMP1 cars, so I don't think that he knows that.
@@ikaunieksplay he does race GT ferraris for AF corse, in a different series though, blancpain GT world challenge i beleive. not sure if he's driven them at le mans ever.
@@mfelix2183 Are Blancpain cars comparable to like GT3 or 2 cars? Sorry for the odd question since I'm an F1 fan and I'm not well versed in GT and WEC racing.
@@justinl2009 As far as I know Blancpain (recently renamed as GT World Challenge Europe) runs with GT3-specs cars
I have mad respect for any racer who can do a 24 hour race
Should be noted that the number of hours a driver can drive in the 24 Hours of Le Mans is capped at no more than 4 hours in any 6 hour window and no more than 14 hours total. Still a brutal test of physical endurance, though.
I remember 2016 Lemans, for me the best Lemans i have ever watched, as a huge Porsche fan, I couldnt hold myself when the toyota stopped, I was just screaming, it was a heartbreaking lemans in 2016, hopefully the WEC hypercar brings back some factorys to lemans, so that 2021 will be more interesting for me as the years when porsche left.
Sadly Formula E in Berlin is cancelled, I planned to go there with a friend but...
You are a week early. Formula E gonna have 6 races in Berlin
I'm happy that "Ford vs Ferrari" movie makes LeMans more interesting for many people!
Sadly, this year's LeMans will be in rFactor2, not it real life.
Come back next year guys, endurance races is something really special.
Let's hope the delay to September isn't just a delay, but another vroom vroom.
Tbf, the rF2 lemans has more entries than usual so that’s cool
I watched much of the virtual race this past weekend. No, it wasn't the same. No, it wasn't as awesome. But, it was pretty interesting in it's own right.
Virtual Le Mans was good tbf, it was the best organized sim-racing event during the hard lockdowns. But yeah nothing like the actual race (hopefully) coming in September
3:00 The Mercedes took off after Mulsanne Corner and before Indianapolis, not on the Mulsanne Kink.
Depends, there were two seperate incidents.
@@fassive Yeah Webber flipped before Mulsanne Corner and Dumbrek before what Neel called Indy1.
@@KD-oi9sk yes but the video was the crash in indianapolis, there is only a picture and aftermath of Webber's warmup crash
@@KD-oi9sk Mark Webber and taking off, name a more iconic duo
The video yes it happen at a point before indianapolis but the same mercedes flipped again before that one on the footage at the mulsanne corner during a warm up though it wasn't taken on footage but there was a picture
Would like to see an episode similar to this about the Bathurst circuit
If you are here because of Ford vs Ferrari, make sure you watch Truth in 24h. Its about Audi's dominance at the turn of the century and its available on youtube
Interviewer: What do you think about Le Mens
Neel: well... it's tricky
I "recognized" you from The Grand Tour :) What a great video, thank you!
This is a very good video. Thank you for doing it.
I just began watching le mans back in september. i loved watchin it.
Great story ... excellent conclusion to say “Le Man will let you win .... “
thanks for sharing, Neel, kudos and good luck in future race challenges.
Monaco next
I love that they're doing this after doing one on Indy.
Next to Monaco to finish the Triple Crown!
I really enjoyed this video
Man, the year that P2 car carelessly tapped the Risi Ferrari (at 0:42) off the track really ticked me off. It was fitting to see the P2 team faced with a penalty afterwards.
Have you watched " Ford vs Ferrari" movie? 😂
That's why I watched this video, otherwise I don't have any interest in watching racing😂
By this point, everyone has
If they weren't, chances are either they haven't watched it yet or they're already well-versed on it. It's been told and recognized for a very long time amongst the motorsport and automotive circle
@@yuanedo795 i haven't watched it but i've watched le mans since around 2013
uh, you guys do realise that Le Mans during those times were different than now
Yuan Edo as a Ferrari fan I refuse
this track in sim racing is practically like therapy
I love this track on real racing 3. Probably my favourite track.
I would never have thought that there can be different weather on one side of the track than the other! Shows how big the track really is.
A similar phenomenon is known to happen in the Belgian GP in F1, especially in the days of the long circuit instead of the shortened modern one. You can get some weird weather patterns in that part of Belgium.
My personal favorite UA-cam Video.
for me, Le Mans more than a Race is a Festival, all the spirit around there and the history.
I remember watching the 2016 Le Mans and I was absolutely speechless
still hurts today tbh
Thanks to this race being the best money-making method in GT7, I've done several hundred laps of this track in the last few months, so it's cool to finally know the names of the specific corners. I always knew about the famed Mulsane Straight, but never the others. Such a fun track to try to master, at least virtually. I can't imagine carrying around the massive weight of talent to actually race this in real life.
A dangerous car race-a player or an audience, or the enthusiasm and thrill of it, would feel like flying in the sky.
You should do the Monaco circuit!
Maravilloso ❤
Has BI done a video on the Nurburgring?
Also I want to see Tom K do a Le Mans review, he's the king of Le Mans
Yep
Excelente
just in time for the virtual 34 hours of Le Mans. I see what they did there...
Yes we need more although I will probs know every track
You should have a look at Mount Panorama in Australia for a tough race on a tough track.
7:42 You can see Mark Webber for a little bit
I KNOW THIS TRACK! I'VE RIDDEN THIS A THOUSAND OF TIMES!
Neel Jani, a living legend
Absolutely
4:47 Food for thought!
I much prefer the old track without the two chicanes. 1977 and such. So cool!
This analysis makes AJ Foyt Graham Hill and Fernando Alonso's wins even more mind boggling astonishing !!!!
I'm preparing myself for endurance in gran turismo...
I need to remember every corner.
Especially after the long straight. I always get confused with the racing line...
This is so cool. Did he drive the Porsche Hybrid Evo?
I remember seeing the toyota stop in front of the finish. It never was so quiet on the start finish straight that whole race.
Heartbreaking.
Does anyone know the background music track from 6:15 onward? Only shows 'Music: Audio Network' towards the end credits & my Shazam couldn't pick it up!
just some copyright-free soundtrack
Like how you use Mazda No.55 as reference for diagram XD
I'm not sure who messed up, but your discussion at 3:10 about flipping Mercedes is a bit misleading to say the least. The video footage showed the flip during the race, which happened after Mulsanne corner at the 2nd kink towards Indianapolis. Mark Webber flipped another Mercedes (actually his second flip) before the race during the warm up going at the small hill before Mulsanne corner, so that sounds like Jani referred to, just using the footage from crash of Peter Dumbreck during the race?
There's no video of Webber's crash
do Monaco GP next?
Again I didn’t find out what the (more or less) straight between Mulsanne and Indianapolis is called. But if somebody cares: the chicane before start/finish is called Ralentisseur du Raccordement (meaning Connection Chicane as that’s where the Circuit Bugatti connects). Only the first chicane is called Ford.
heartbreaking for lmp1 but wonderful for gte
The 2nd Mulsane chicane, for me, is the hardest corner of the track.
I was at this Le Mans. The Nissan stopped right in front of me. It was incredible
Please do road America
Makes me want to play Gran Turismo 7.
Endurance racing sounds terrifying even an hour in iracing I feel exhausted much less the real thing
I dont know man, its their profession and trained for it
It can be boring on sim, but in reality you have to focus otherwise you crash
Few months ago I just learn how to drive a car, and me and my dad go to other city to buy a car, so i have to drive our old car back home alongside with him, it was 6 hours+ and as i said im still new, i put total focus driving it, not that exhausting
You have to give your biggest hope everything goes right and everything is okay with everyone in 24hr races
Here after watching Ford v Ferrari!
Next turn by turn: no, next two...Mid-Ohio which was Bobby Rahal's home track and then do Monoco. Could also do Baku; formula 1 race in Azerbaijan. Also, please please please do the Isle of Man TT turn by turn.
My favorite circuit in. Real racing’s 3
Which game is that ?
@@TetaGama It's a mobile game

6:13 - what car is that?
Mazda LM55 Vision GT concept
As Cerise said, mazda's LM55.
A Concept car that first appeared in Gran Turismo 6
But still a moment of silence to those innocent people lost their lives just to see their favorite team.
"We are racing drivers. But we're not monsters" - Alfred Neubauer
Damn. That Mercedes being lit.
As a bonus point, the driver is relatively okay as well
Yuan Edo was it Mark Webber driving when it flipped?

Le Mans
Le mans is hard in racing games too
That Mercedes literally took flight!
1:20 why are there some road cars
It's a multiclass race. The "road cars" are in the GT category, while the Prototypes have their own race.
Nobody are gonna talk about the flying car lol
Well,if you're a motorsport fan or you like to see crash compilations, chances are you've seen it once after all
Though it's still remarkable indeed, given that the driver is okay afterwards
many people know of it.
We've been talking about it for over 20 years.
@@yuanedo795 The driver was Mark Webber who was an F1 driver
How does it work
Is there more than 1 race going on at the same time like different divisions?
Yeah, there's three classes in the race. There's sports cars, LMP1 (Le Mans Prototype) and LMP2. LMP1 is the fastest car in the race, it is about as fast as an F1 car.
There is 4 classes. Lmp1 lmp2 and gt pro and gt am. Lmp1 has been replaced by le mans hyper car and Ldpi. Lot of people don't like the new Ldpi class and wish it was just le mans hyper car so can bring back more or less gt1 on steroids.
I think the 2016 Le Mans is very memorable because Ford won the other class that is not the prototypes. 2016 marked the 50th annyversary of the Ford v Ferrari movie
0:52 What has my mind come to.
Sounds like u gotta have a Master's in driving to race this
They need to build a off-camber oval for NASCAR
"Ford v Ferrari" is the reason im here.
I'm here bc I'm just curious, since I love this track
Spoken like a mainstream noob............
@@MiguelGarcia-vj7oo Who cares? More interest in Le Mans and/or WEC is better than less. I don't care how somebody get's hooked; I just want them hooked. It's better for everyone, that way.
Guess who's back
Back again,
Audi's back
Tell a friend.
He looks like Roberto Benigni
That poor Toyota, I remember that year
Hi :D
How do you join to participate in lemans
Le Mans lets you win
“I’m in there and it feels long and hard”
3:04 was the car so fast to the point that the spoiler didn’t work?
Not really but since he was in the slipstream of the car in front and came up to that crest he didn't have any force to push him against the ground so the car just took off.
Who's ready for this year's race?
Every time I play Gran Turismo I always have a problem with those Porsche curves.
Every time I go too slow I get overtaken or if I go too fast I crash.
Now all BI need to do is to cover Monaco and Indianapolis (if they haven't), so they'll have covered all the venues of the Triple Crown of motorsport. Additionally, Spa and Bathurst would be great additions as well.
Also, if you only discovered about Le Mans after watching Ford vs Ferrari, I have to say, welcome to the wonderful world of endurance racing. You've still got a lot of things to discover, study and appreciate about, so take your time 😉
They already did indy but yeah they should cover Monaco I bet Nico Rosberg would do the video for them
Love to see Monza too!
I vote MotoGP in Circuit Paul Ricard for the Grand Prix in 🇫🇷
je suis du mans et je suis la course tout les ans
LMP1 cars are the coolest cars on the planet
Nope! Group C were the coolest ever.
Maybe its just me... But i go crazy when two cars from 2 different class clash.... I hate when it happens...
I thought the most famous race ever was form one side of the playground the the other
I love this series, but imagine BJ Baldwin and Baja 1000
