Watch Peter Dumbreck miraculously escape uninjured from a violent crash during the 1999 24 Hours of Le Mans race when his No. 5 Mercedes-Benz CLR somersaulted into the woods at about 300 km/h (190 mph).
The crash was believed to be caused by an aerodynamic issue resulting in the front of the car rising up and then flipping without any external contact; Mark Webber had already suffered near identical crashes in the No. 4 car during the Thursday night practice and the Saturday morning Warm-up. The remaining No. 6 car was retired immediately, and the team withdrew from all other planned entries in endurance racing and the American Le Mans Series.

1. They did nothing to fix the problem;
2. They did something, but it was absolutely ineffective...

That was the third time a CLR went airborne that weekend. It happened to one car twice resulting in heavy damage which would keep it out of the race and after the car in the video crashed, Mercedes pulled the third CLR out of the race and they pulled out of motorsport altogether after that weekend.
They didn't pull out of motorsport completely after that, they were still an engine supplier in F1 at that time and racing the DTM as well. I think you're confusing it with the 1955 Le Mans disaster, which also involved Mercedes, and resulted in many spectators being killed. What about his pants?
Tim Beck if it weren't for his giant balls the car would have flown alot higher. His pants remain untouched.
The car landed more or less flat on a soft(ish) surface and remained basically intact. His harness would have kept him steady as the car flailed around.
If the car had crashed nose first into the track it might have been a very different outcome.
From an aerodynamics point of view, that crash serves as an excellent illustration of the incredibly thin margin between downforce and lift. Luckily, the Mercedes driver was all okay!

As bad as it may seem, but that landing couldn't have been any better I don't think...landing flat on the ground backwards with the seat supporting the driver's weight and especially the helmet. I'm not surprised he walked away from that.
Yes, that's exactly right. Of all the angles for a car to hit the ground, tail first, wheels down, is the easiest on the driver. Another thing, I'm guessing the aerodynamic drag from the car's bottom heading straight into the airstream for a moment when it first lifted off the ground probably cut 20 MPH off the speed.
Apparently when the marshals got to him. He was sitting on a tree stump with a phone in hand. Probably telling those back in the pits he was ok. He was also breathalyse as Le Mans 24hrs takes place on public roads.
He was very lucky indeed, the car hit a tree on landing that punched clean through the chassis, but went down the gap between the driver's seat and the fuel tank bulkhead, missing Dumbreck by a few inches. Evidently it was not his day to die.
