- The OnePlus Open aims to be the best foldable phone around, even being better than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5. There's a lot of innovation here but when it comes to the OnePlus Open camera, video modes and durability, we need to have quick talk.....

Open is the leader and winner. For me i dont need wifi cahrger, i prefer fast wire charger
😂😂😂😂
That was hilarious... opens the Samsung with one hand then uses two hands to open the OnePlus whilst saying the opposite 😅😅😅😅
Fun fact, the new LYTIA sensor is in the family that launched on the latest XPERIA 1 Mk V. Stacked pixel tech will be such a game changer in the near future. OP just needs to refine the processing, the sensor is there
tho!
i haven't seen another reviewer of this phone who was disappointed with the camera. it's the first foldable that has piqued my interest. as a matter of fact the only thing that stopped me from trading away my bay pixel 8 pro for it two days ago was the price.
Great editing! Subtle and impactful, good job on the premium feel
I never understood people's fascination with wireless charging. It's not as efficient as wired charging, plus it creates a lot of heat.
Me either. People acting like it's the end of the world. They would rather have their phone take 2 hours to wirelessly charge instead of charging for 45 minutes with a wire
It's a matter of convince, but I never got on board with it either because I got a bunch of gear that takes USB C charging, and it is just easier for me to buy more cables than buying a few wireless charging pads
Laziness and people who don't care of their cables
If you own a Tesla, you'll know its importance....
I've had 2 of my 3 last phones have problems with the USBC port
My s22u would start fast charging, pause, and then start again... Over and over.
I've be ome paranoid about damaging my USB-C port, even though my wife, who just abuses her phone, works fine
So I use wiress so I'm not plugging a cable in and out.
Now, I'm Probobly paranoid, but...
Wireless charging is normally too slow and heats up the phone so I rarely use it preferring direct USBC charging instead. Besides 67-80 Watt charging is ridiculous compared to the competition.
From what I've seen from other reviewers the cameras are on par and many times they come out better than the other folding phones in America.
That being said, I cancelled my Pixel 8 Pro order because I knew I'd have to trade it in one day for Pixel Fold 2 (or 3) if and when it gets the same cameras and I didn't wanna be stuck with a single screen phone after living the past 5 years with the dual screen phones from LG (LGG8X and LGV60).
why would you buy a pixel..... why...
For the price point and what's available on comparable phones (in the US) wireless charging should have been an option. Those who argue it's a gimmick can just plug theirs in. Some people would still like it included. Just seems like an unnecessary omission. But I assume their camera bump has gotten in the way.
Interesting review, I don’t know why he is comparing it to iPhone or S23 ultra they are just different. I think comparing to Samsung and other foldable phones is fair. I have seen a few reviewers they see the camera better than other foldable. Actually Sony and Oppo worked together on the Lytia sensor. It equals that of cameras with a 1 inch sensor, which is a big deal. I believe some updates may get better performance. But the 1+ Open is a much better phone than all the other competitors at the moment.
Try not to think of it as “this phone isn’t as good as iPhone or s23” but more like “here are two other common phones as a reference for comparison “
I love your channel, your team is amazing guys ! Nice job Ibra, like always !
If they put a pen inside the fold phone and that would be game changer 😂
Your wallpapers are so nice, where can I get them?
How is the support for Canadian carriers on this, does VoLTE and 5G work with Rogers, Bell and Telus?
Me watiching the video with my z fold 3 😂
So am I
Wireless charging is incredibly overrated. It's slow, often times it makes the phone hot. I'd much rather have fast wired charging and no wireless charging than slow wired charging and even slower wireless charging.
I agree, but having the choice between both would also be really nice. I just want Qi2 support so I can use my Peak Design Wallet with it. Having to slap a Magsafe sticker on a $1,700 device feels silly.
That's a false choice though. There's no reason to not have both, especially on a phone this expensive
@@ThatsPety the next version will probably have it. I have had all the current American foldables and flips. The OnePlus is the best by far. Missing one feature doesn't make it not as good as the galaxy or pixel fold. Those phones are missing features that this phone has like an incredibly useful alert slider. Much more useful than slow wireless charging.
@@themoviesnob9513 this is a total topic change. But I disagree with that too. There's a million and one software features the Samsung has that the OnePlus doesnt, and just like wireless charging, this downside may not matter to you, but its still a downside. Of course the S Pen is also something only the Samsung has. But most importantly, OnePlus horrible reputation for customer support is a huge downside compared to both Google and Samsung, and that alone is an instant no for a lot of people. Oh, and both the Pixel fold and galaxy are selling for $250 less than the OnePlus right now
@@themoviesnob9513 of course the OnePlus has it's pros, I like a lot about it. But "the best by far" is an exaggeration. In reality, it depends on what you value and what you don't
Are all folding phones still prone to dead pixels around the crease area due to repetitive folding? This is my only concern from getting one?
I have been looking at several foldable phones and ONE PLUS OPEN got my attention
When will Android 14 be available for this phone? As mentioned earlier how many years will One Plus support?
Thanks for the review!
Love that Honda civic😂
Thank you for the balanced review. Good first launch, but time will tell with how durable it is. Come back in a couple of months.
I have no issues with Fold 5 cover screen. I am used to it.
As for the main screen comparison, I wish there is no support for a pen in One Plus which I use in the Fold 5.
But the fold 5 does support S Pen... I picked one up for mine two days ago.
@@djw1091994 I think OP meant to say that the cover screen doesn't support S Pen support, only the 'main' (folding) screen.
Some people get the naming of the two screens reversed, as, officially, the cover/front screen is not the main screen.
That said, I agree that the cover screen ought to have S Pen support. I'm an avid S Pen user, and use both S Pen Pro and Slim S Pen on my Z Fold5 (and previously on my S21 Ultra, S21 S Pen and S Pen Pro).
Maybe Z Fold6 could introduce both screens to have S Pen support, rather than the main folding screen only.
@@djw1091994 I meant in this One Plus phone. The reviews are missing the important piece / feature. I need it from productivity point.
I have edited my comment to make it more clear
The OnePlus is compatible with the active stylus from Oppo. Basically the same company, different branding.
Hi Will you be reviewing the honor v2? Thanks for the vid
No one needs wireless charging. When you have a fast cable charger
Hello.
I want to mention with the Samsung 3,4 & 5, you weren't supposed to view media content vertically.
You were supposed to view it horizontally.
The vertical function is to handle texts, emails, call logs and view everything as a list.
I have a z fold 5 but did order an open...curious to see how it stacks up against thr 5. Plus ive never had a OP device.
Honest question here. As a current three year Z Fold 2 owner, besides paying another almost two grand for a fold device and some more camera megapixels, what exactly are Fold 2 owners missing out on, not owning the lastest phone device?
Will the drag and drop media feature from the recents folder work with WhatsApp and other 3rd party apps?
1:22 - The exploded Note 9 sure does look like a Note 7.
where can we get that wallpaper please?
The uniform layout is pretty good actually. Makes a statement for the foldable screen being an extension of the smartphone and not a separate tablet built inside a phone. Also the most Apple thing. Whenever Apple does a foldable (amAND A BIG IF) they’re gonna go this way for sure
Does it have eSIM support? Trying to figure this out before I preorder.
Yes. That's the second sim
No, it's a double sided sim slot
How do you trade-in your old phone for $200? I don't see the steps you take on their app.
Comparing this camera to the iPhone or S23U is unjust.. The question is how it is compared to other foldabels since all the foldables have an average camera system.. Oneplus also said at the launch that they didn't want to settled where other settled..
This video is CRISP
OnePlus needs to get onboard with 4-7 years of updates if they expect to charge $1500.
True 👍🏽
And prove to be really reliable in terms of hardware and bug free. I got the Fold5 after years of OnePlus devices and the software is hugely more reliable on the Fold.
Literally said it gets 4 years of os updates and 5 years of security updates...
Doesn't one plus not still let you install vustom OS's? Would have thought if you still could you would be able to keep it updated anyway?
@@screwball992 that's most phones. Not a OnePlus exclusive problem
Damn. Dope intro
foldables really need to go down in price thats the only thing thats stopping it and the inner screen that could break any moment
I never understood tje fascination with induction stove as well 😂
I the last update introduce the feature of different wallpapers for open and close.
You mean an exploded note 7, the note 9s were fine😊
Amazing looks phone
massive crease down the middle
I've watched many videos on this this past week and this is the first one that mentioned that it doesn't open completely flat??
Thanks for giving a real world review. So many other UA-cam reviews have soft played the shortcomings and made this seem like the new King of foldables. I've been a Pixel user and moved away for Sony, but came back to the Pixel 7 and now the Pixel Fold for the sheer "point and shoot" peace of mind. Lack of wireless charging is such a strange thing to omit.
Compare the camera to other foldable, as they are restricted by the similar physical dimensions.
7 months it lasted until its foldable crown was finally taken, by Vivo with their Vivo X Fold 3 Pro.
Good to see competition bringing inovation! I can't wait to see how One Plus strikes back to nab the crown back again!
I kinda find that even though people like foldables people always seem to love Samsungs software.
This one seems better IMO. Probably cause I use foldables differently.
I definitely prefer Pixel or OnePlus software to Samsung software. Samsung has too many duplicates of Google apps and too many pre-installed apps to deal with (and Bixby). I'm happy the US finally has some other competition in the foldable market. Motorola could compete in flip/fold/ flagship markets if they would ever get serious about OS and security software updates.
LOL You used two hands opening BOTH the Open and the ZFold
Bummer on the cameras but im willing to bet they are better than the ones on my one plus 7pro that im switching from. Missing the wireless charging is not a big deal for me. Even my one plus 7 pro had 30 watt charging 4 years ago... Faster than anything samsung or pixel offers today... And the one plus open is 67 watts... Yes please. Ill pick up a one plus charger for ghr car and just never have a dead battery... Win win.
Actually Samsung has 45w "super fast" charging now, but they are still behind 1+. I also agree that wireless charging is a worthless gimmick that wastes energy and charges very very slow. The tech has barely advanced since Palm Pre had it 15 years ago. Every wireless charger I've tried has been trash. Wired fast charging is vastly superior in every single way. People who say wireless is more convenient are stupid, its takes way longer and its not convenient when you need to use the device while charging it. Its not convenient when you are travelling and you still have to plug it in because guess what its not actually wireless, it still has wires and still has to be in contact with your device.
Tech people/youtubers really get obsessed with these cameras. Almost any new phone that comes out in 2020-2023 has a decent camera. I am using oneplus 7 pro and it is capable of taking very good photos. Plus, everything will be compressed anyway when uploaded to social media.
Thank you!
Was tempted to get this phone but i think ill wait to get a foldable till the cameras get better.
They will update the OS to 14 soon, so I bet my butt they will update the cameras after that.. I ordered it since I needed to upgrade from my 8 Pro anyway..
love seeing these phones, i wont be getting one because i need a real bumper to protec.
Trade in program is super good, trading in my z fold 4 I left only had to pay $70 for the phone with the subscrber ($50) and graduate discount (15%)
Ill wait a year for the price to drop. Gor the OnePlus 10 pro a year after it came out for $380
Oneplus/ oppo back to paying a lot of money to advertisers once again
Folds are over expensive. People are wasting their money on it.
Thanks for the review
So basically you just said you cant afford one lol.
@@redstang70if we follow these people advice, we will never get new tech because they can't afford it/too expensive for them
I thought I saw the word Affordable. Well, I was wrong 😅.
Was tempted to do the OnePlus and sell my Fold 5. It's unfortunate that the cameras are disappointing here. Huge bummer.
Cameras on folds are garbage as a Fold 4 user. For 1799 btw
OnePlus apparently already released a software update to address the camera concerns.
The OnePlus camera is better than the folds though lol
Omitting essential features that everybody uses everyday is phone makers marketing strategy to get consumers coming back for their next release product. Removing the ability to have different backgrounds for both the external and internal displays is a limitation on the phone OS essential customization. 😎💯💪🏾👍🏾 Restricting what users can customise is taking away from some of the fun things to do on your phone.
You cannot trade in ANY phone. I've tried it and it only has 6 options of companies and limited amount of phones. In Toronto, Canada by the way.
Nice.
I still have a Oneplus One and it
Still Freaking Works Smoothly. 😂
Finally a foldable that makes me want to buy one. Maybe if it goes down to like $999.
Preorder it I got mine for 850 with student discount trade in and 50 reward couldn't pass it up dead ass 850 with the OnePlus buds
@@procastanateI ordered one for the same price Friday. Traded in my OnePlus 11 and used the Student Discount as well. Hopefully shipping times have improved since launch though.
This phone will like be over 1000 dollars (without deals) for quite a while. I imagine until they start hitting Amazon as renewed you won't find one that cheap
Had to make sure at the beginning I wasn't watching an MKBHD video :D
Unless you are using a phone dedicated to shooting photos (Xperia), then the small differences really do not matter to me. They all look better than 5 years ago. I also dont care for wireless charging, as finding the perfect spot or bumping the phone is so inconvenient.
The Mi Mix 3 and Honor Magic 2 are a generation ahead (at least) of any Western foldable. We gotta step it up over here. Foldables will be ubiquitous in a couple of years, especially once Apple finally gets on board (2028? lol). The OnePlus is still not even close to setting a bar, I'm afraid.
Delusion. Those other foldables you mentioned don't even fully work over here. The screen, camera and price alone set new bars
Amazing hardware but ass software. I ain’t paying for buggy device
@@ThomasTheTankEngine22 They do work over here, though. There are official international releases still planned, but it's trivial to get them working already. Also, $1,699 for a foldable is "setting a new bar"? Who's delusional?
I agree that the Mi Mix and Honor V2 are the best foldables, but OnePlus is not far behind. It’s third best. Samsung Fold 5 is trash. Also, OnePlus is Chinese, it’s not a Western foldable.
@@BigBoss7777777 my point isn't necessarily an east vs. west kind of thing, although Samsung is definitely furthest behind I think. This foldable OnePlus has bright screens but I'm really not seeing anything else remarkable
Me in Ireland where OnePlus doesn't even have a trade in program, let alone an instant minimum trade in discount of $200: 😢
You look like one of my favorite Hip Hop producer legendary Hip Hop producer Large Professor..
Have a emerald dusk coming nov 21
Open is amazing
why are people so obsessed with wireless charging? You cant even use it if its on the charger...
there has to be something to complain about, or why make the video?
It's mental. They only think about the 2 seconds they saved not having to plug in a cable. They don't think about the fact that it takes way more energy, way more time, and generates more heat on their battery and device. They don't think about the $200 extra they wasted on wireless chargers. They don't think about the fact that even though they call it wireless, it's still wired and still has to be in contact with their device. Its a gimmick. People like gimmicks.
@@chtmwell said
I don't think people are obsessed with wireless charging, it's just a useful feature in some circumstances and a phone at this price should have it.
@@ThaedDavid @ThaedDavid "A phone at this price should have it." Says who? The industry is lagging behind in this area and OnePlus knows it. Past OnePlus phones have had 50 watt wireless charging, and nobody else made chargers capable of that. Buy one of those.
i would buy it if i can get a solid trade in of my s22 ultra
My new phone 💚
I'm not sold on foldables just yet. The cameras need to be flagship level, underscreen fingerprint scanner on the cover screen. And anyone with a smartwatch uses wireless charging, so this One plus open needs a separate charging space. So it's a not yet, rating from me.
It's getting there with the Open's software. Just need more refinement. But then again for casual users, foldable is overkill. If people wanna use the inside screen for entertainment, might as well buy a budget tablet.
if you don't have any content that benefits from the larger screen then yes, it's not for you.
for me i can't get back to normal phones once i started using the large screen for social media/ videos/ games.. the small screen only useful now for chats.
Wireless charging is the best way to DESTROY your battery in the shortest time possible !!!
We are getting nothing phone 2 review ❤
You don't even need to trade in a phone to get the $200 discount!
You're the first reviewer that calls this camera "not terrible" and "its a decend camera"....... Whats the different way of testing with the other reviewers (which some of them were photographers aswell). Anyway, thanks for the review.
Is there any affordable foldable phone?
So, you don't like how it doesn't open flat,
you don't like the camera system,
the colors are muted,
it doesn't come with a stylus,
and you find the fact that it doesn't also have wireless charging unacceptable, but yet despite all that it's a "masterpiece"? I don't think you know what that word means.
Probably means leaning towards the overall build?...Screens and.what not. Basically, what folds should be.
You might have one that is defective because everyone else says theirs opens flat.
MKBHD one already have dead pixel, so their QC is another thing to worry about.
@@789know every phone release you could buy a phone with an issue. They are mass produced so things can go wrong.

Love my Foldable. Samsung version.
LOL, a masterpriece? Oh, affiliate link...😂
It does support stylus. 👍
The batteries on all of these OnePlus devices last longer than I do.
I always have 50 to 60% battery left at the end of the day and then I slow charge it. They all are always back to 100% by 2:00am.
His criticisms of the cameras seems to be opposite to the majority of the videos I’ve watched.
Of course what a person feels about a device is a matter of personal preference and he is free to feel what he wants about the phone.
Just understand his opinion is not the majority.
I highly recommend anyone considering this device watch as many reviews as you can and get a wide range of views. You will hears different points from each and at times these reviews will point something out you never thought to consider.
I was never interested in folding phones because I used iPhone and didn’t care for the any of the android UIs. But Apple decided to take the sim tray from the US market…. Only the US market.
Market aside, no sim tray is no good for me. I know what cdma is and what eSIM means for the American market and it’s not good. OnePlus has a UI that is very reminiscent of iOS. So it’s an easy transition, and actually OxygenOS has several improvements that Apple should be looking at.
I bought the Open and I enjoy it much more than I would have expected. Having said that I also enjoy my NordN30, Nord3, 10Pro, 10t, and 11. And will enjoy the 12 when it comes out, because there really isn’t much I can complain about when these work so well and give you so much more for the lower price you pay for their flagship over another brand. You sometimes get a case, or earbuds. You get a charging brick appropriate for your phone and a cable. Apple, Samsung and many others don’t do that and continue to charge you more for less product and often times a lesser phone.
As interested as I am about innovations in Smartphones... I still don't get the opened up screen ratio of a foldable phone esp. in regards to the hefty price bump. The examples in this videos are like "yeah okay neat for the 2% situations where I might use it..." I mean I can split the screen on my normal phone too. But the times I have done it are so minimal and forgettable ...
I'm enjoying the processor and the big screen on the fold 5, back in the day everyone doubted the note series thought it was never going to make it long term boy were they wrong, same situation with the folds, it's going to take off soon
Yeah foldables are not for casual users except for bragging rights.
Not opening flat would put me off.. my fold fold 4 open completely flat
Everyone who "don't understand wireless charging" can just STFU and not use it, even if it's available. No need to advocate for removing the option for those who want it.
Absolutely. It's a common feature and to not have it on such an expensive phone is a huge miss.
@@HardwareCanucks how do you defend removal of chargers in phone box in name of environment yet advocate for Environmental UN-friendly wireless chargers?
Fast Charging: It damages Battery BOOOO 😡
wireless charging: Literally cooking battery to death in name of convenience 🤗
Stylus. I NEED the stylus.
It supports stylus. You just have to buy is separate just like the fold
Will never understand the fascination with nitpicking the cameras of phones. We've gotten to a point where just about every phone can take good pictures. Unless youre heavy into photography it shouldn't matter that much lol there's more to a phone than the camera on the back.
I will never buy another OnePlus after they bricked my Nord N10 with the bug that increases system storage to 100% for no reason. they've had this issue for years and still haven't fixed it. great phones, bad support.
Did you do any software updates on the nord n10? I was trying to disable any software updates on my nord n30 5g and when I tried to figure out how disable any software updates or get rid of the notification regarding software updates. It took me awhile on how to stop my phone from doing any software updates and the phone already automatically did a software update. Luckily my one plus nord 30 battery did drain very quickly and the mobile data hot spot was still working. Every software update on every phone that I used to do, it would cause very fast battery drain and the mobile data hot spot no longer work anymore. I had to buy a new phone to fix these issues because software updates can't be reversed like app updates. I no longer do any software updates since certain functionalities stopped working and features ended up being removed. The only thing that I update are my apps from the google play store and the apps that I sideload. I trust app updates way more than doing any software updates since software can be manipulated and we don't know what is really happening underneath the software updates. Anyways, the android apps are designed for older versions of android.
NO wireless charging in 2023 ? Wow !!
It's a great device and not having wireless charging is not enough not to recommend it
@10:39 That dude needs to wash his hoodie, those sleeves are frigging BLACK bro.
Unfortunately no headphone jack is still a deal breaker, guess I'll have to wait for Sony to make a foldable.
I never use wireless charging, but I use my headphone jack multiple times per day
People always assume they know what a foldable suppose to look like and they always be referring to the outside but samsung have that outside screen like that for a reason. Foldable phones suppose to feel like foldable not normal phones base on the front screen.
Not many people use or care about wireless charging so its a moot point
