I've not listened to their full discography, but as for now my favorite album definitely is Discipline. The Sheltering Sky is one of the most incredible songs I've ever heard, but actually every track has its purpose and its incredible moments. I also love the interplay between the musicians, each member puts his effort into the songs, and I also love the concept between it all, that discipline/indiscipline theme throughout the lyrics.
King Crimson is a band so unique, so progressive that actually all the albums by them still have something to say

I'm with you. I was hooked at the outset by ITCOTCK, devastated by the follow-up In the Wake of Poseidon, upon which it seemed (and still does) that the group had emptied its tank.
Until 1981. Now that was a bona fide super group. Talking Heads meets King Crimson and galaxies form.
Thank you Adrian Belew. Thank you Tony Levin for filling the tank (unfortunately only to see it emptied again).

I finally found someone who can shed light on similar feels on In the Court.
For me, I can compliment it the same way, the reasons it doesn't grab me is mostly due to the ballady theatrics and as a musician, I hate producers and Sinfield had a massive impact on that album. With most bands, especially in that day, the debut would almost always be a "producer's album" as record labels wanted to insure sales. By the time Islands came out, it's easy to tell what decisions are Peter's and what ones are Robert's - enter the Wetton era.

Hard to rank their albums but for me, it might be:
    1. Red
    2. Larks
    3. Discipline
    4. Starless and Bible Black
    5. In the Court of the Crimson King
    6. Islands
    7. THRAK
    8. Three of a Perfect Pair
    9. Beat
    10. Lizard
    11. In the Wake of Poseidon
    12. The Power to Believe
    13. The Construction of Light
Ya know, I don't even feel that strongly about this list, they can almost all easily change. All I know is that Red and Larks are probably always going to be my 2 absolute favorites, and Power to Believe and Construction will likely remain my least favorites.
I'm better at ranking my top 20 KC songs lol

Imho Islands is the hidden gem of Crimson’s discography, it’s really overlooked and underrated, maybe because was launched in a very delicate and unstable moment of their career, maybe because is too melancholic, but is so melodic, so beautiful.
For me the best albums of KC are the below ones:
    1 - In the Court
    2- Islands
    3- Red
    4- Lizard
    5- Lark Tongues in Aspic
6- In The Wake of Poseidon
From the classic era, I never really enjoyed Starless and Bible Black, too noisy, over experimental, overrated
From 1980 I really don’t think it’s KC anymore, they lost the progressive rock torch, it’s still very good, but for me is a completely different sound, it’s like hearing another band

I never thought I’d find somebody who dislikes the 80’s Belew era like I do lol, it just does nothing for me. The Devil’s Triangle is based on a classical piece called Mars by Gustav Holst from his suite The Planets. For me, I love how chaotic and avant grade it is, the buildup and climax is extraordinary too. One of the darkest, most frightening Crimson songs imo. If you listen to some 20th century classical composers like Messiaen, Bartok, Stravinsky, Varese, Schoenberg, etc you might change your mind on it! It might help you like Larks and Bible Black more too, Fripp was highly influenced by it during this period. I’m honestly surprised you love Lizard so much haha, it’s a favorite of mine too along with Islands. I really love when they do the free jazz mixed with symphonic/classical stuff, always thought it gave off Medieval imagery especially with that artwork! Love the serene and reflective vibe that Islands has, the title track is probably the most beautiful song they’ve done for sure. Interesting list! From Court to Red I literally can’t pick a favorite, I love them almost all equally for different reasons. There’s definitely nothing quite like King Crimson.

Mate, I hope you won't mind a few corrections to your statements concerning Lizard (I know, I know, critics everywhere), nothing personal and all that . . . The opening theme on "Cirkus" is played on the mellotron not a syn; there are no dragons anywhere on "Prince Rupert . . ."; I believe what you think is a clarinet is actually Robin Miller's oboe, maybe Mark Charig's cornet. That said, I share your passion for this magnificent album - nothing like it before or since. Cheers!

    14) First half of Three of a Perfect Pair (I'm splitting this into two because of simply how different I feel about the two styles that exist separately in this, I simply cannot give the same rating to a song like Industry and Man With An Open Heart)
    13) In The Court of the Crimson King (sorry guys, it doesn't mean it's bad, I still like it)
    12) Beat
    11) Starless of the Bible Black
    10) In the Wake of Poseidon
    9) Construkction of Light
    8) Islands
    7) Power to Believe
    6) 2nd half of Three of a Perfect Pair
    5) Red
    4) Discipline
    3) Lizard
    1) Larks Tongues in Aspic and Thrak together, I can't really pick one.
God it's so difficult to rank them. Each one is easily above 7/10. KC is and has always been my favorite band and I finally had the opportunity to see them live last year. I'm not a great fan of the new vocals, but it's still absolutely worth seeing them, if you have a chance after this pandemic ends make sure to catch a show.

Nice ranking. Although your number 1 is usually considered their best, you're ranking is not the general one, which I think is good. My favorite KC album is The Power to Believe. Love the more arabic, nature, section of the main title piece, and after that flowing into Dangerous Curves. Also love the end two pieces on that album. Another thing you mentioned was the beauty of Lizard, especially the bolero/peacocks tale. So right! I also dig Red and the ConstrukCtion. Another favorite would however be Discipline (also in my top 3). But what I also like about KC is that all albums (or series) have their own style..

I never followed King Crimson until recently. The only album I knew was the first one. I heard the title track way back in about 1971 and loved it, but KC were never played on the radio back then, and I didn't know anyone who had any of their albums. So, fifty years later, I saw a video on UA-cam of Robert Fripp talking about Discipline, and I decided to give it a listen. Wow. I loved it. It was like a virtuoso Talking Heads, but much better. So then I listened to Beat and Two Of A Perfect Pair, and I loved them too. I have spent the last few months going back over King Crimson's back catalogue. It's been a lot of fun, but nothing has struck me like the three 80s albums. They are absolutely brilliant. Discipline is my favourite.

I enjoyed this rundown, as people say it's your own choices, no-one else's. I see myself as a big Crimson fan and put the debut, Larks and Red at the top, with Discipline and Power next up - the rest are a bit of an acquired taste as they're a challenging band! But each of their albums has a unique quality of its own, often because the band changed rapidly between records - Court is grandiose, mediaeval and mellotron-drenched, Larks is crazy, experimental and unstable and Red is crunching, ominous and almost grunge-like (Kurt Cobain loved it, didn't he?)
KC are just one of those bands where your favourite record changes, depending on your mood...

My Thoughts (Tell Me What You Think):
To me, and many others, King Crimson are the fathers of progressive rock. Many say that King Crimson never had a signature sound, but to me their signature sound is “all things progressive rock” Everything King Crimson does is prog in one way or another. That is why they are highly respected and loved by many. I always thought of King Crimson to have 3 different eras/chapters:
Original King Crimson (1968-1974): Best album is Larks’ Tongues In Aspic. It is my favorite King Crimson album of all time! My 2nd favorite is In The Court Of The Crimson King. This is the album that established progressive rock and should not be forgotten. The 3rd best is Starless And Bible Black. A very neat follow up to Larks’ with some jaw-dropping improvisations. 4th place goes to Red, which is undeniably a prog rock classic. It has one of the greatest prog songs ever written, Starless. 5th place goes to Lizard. A weird album for sure but I do enjoy its goofiness and there’s a lot of strong material on it, especially compared to the albums that came before and after. 6th place is Islands. It’s too slow and quiet and minimalistic but half the songs land pretty well for me. The worst for me is In The Wake Of Poseidon. Good production, but the songs are just shit. The Peace songs taking up nearly half of the tracklist hurts this album tremendously, and most of the music on here is godawful as well. The only songs I find remotely enjoyable are Cat Food, and Pictures Of A City.
80s King Crimson (1981-1984: The top spot has to go to Discipline, Undeniably a strong album in many ways and a classic to 80s prog! Aside from Matte Kudasai, and The Sheltering Sky, which I don’t care for, the rest of the songs are great with minimal flaws and a superb lineup in its prime. My 2nd favorite is Three Of A Perfect Pair, this album is definitely more focused than Beat, which is also a good album, with many strong highlights, but Two Hands is one of the worst songs I’ve ever heard from this band. It wasn’t even written by Adrian Belew, but his then-wife Margaret. It shouldn’t have been on the album. Neurotica is my favorite track on this album, one of Bill Bruford’s best performances.
Millennium King Crimson (1994-2003): My favorite is The ConstruKction of Light which I know a lot of people are going to disagree with. But this album has the masterpiece that is The World’s My Oyster Soup Kitchen Floor Wax Museum and the fascinating Larks’ Tongues In Aspic - Part IV. Although this album does open with ProzaKc Blues which is another one of King Crimson’s worst songs. Then, my 2nd favorite is THRAK, which is a good album as well but has too many interlude tracks. The two Radio songs were absolutely pointless and the two Inner Garden songs did nothing for me either. I do however love the double-trio design on this album though. In December 2022, I had an unhealthy obsession with songs like Sex Sleep Eat Drink Dream, People, and One Time. During the instrumental bridge of Sex Sleep, I used to floor the gas pedal in my car and jerk around with the steering wheel for fun (don’t tell authorities, I stopped doing that very quickly). My least favorite is The Power To Believe, which I think is the worst King Crimson album of all 13, though it’s got a couple of bangers, like Level Five, Facts Of Life, and Elektrik. I can’t stand the rest though…

If you ever get a chance to hear Jakszyk, Fripp and Collins' "A Scarcity of Miracles", I highly suggest you do it. TECHNICALLY, it's not a King Crimson record, but it's the damn closest thing they've done to one in years.

liking it as much as i do, seeing you put discipline so low was an interesting take
i also got genuinely curious how high up you had ranked islands as the video went on, since from my understanding it was generally considered a weaker effort, and after realizing it was going to be in a higher placement than red i was honestly wondering if you were going to place it above in the court of the crimson king (especially because of your comments on Providence and how it was better than Moonchild)
i think i'll give islands another listen right now, thanks for the vid

Worst to Best within each era. Phase I (1969-1971). Earthbound, Islands, Lizard, In the Court of the Crimson King, In the Wake of Poseidon. ITWOP is obviously, blatantly ITCOTCK v. 2, and I think it's better dialed in. It's structurally virtually identical, except in place of that ghastly "free jazz" wasting a lot of side 2 on ITCOTCK, you get the Devil's Triangle. My first King Crimson album was Larks' Tongues in Aspic, and I got hooked on the "metal" aspects of that disc, so the guitarscape of Devil's Triangle is going to get me, as much as I ache over missing Greg Lake's voice. All of phase I is just Robert Fripp gradually pissing enough people off in "his" "ensemble" that he could finally do what he wanted, and you hear that for the first time on Larks' Tongues in Aspic. Also, King Crimson has for half a century especially been a live band, and there are many better versions of 21st Century Schizoid Man than on the album. It's a fine album, but the violent musical conceit of contrasting musical styles seems more contrived on the debut than ITWOP; Fripp learned something. Earthbound? To quote Harlan Ellison's review of the TV show the Partridge Family: "Mother of god."
Phase II (1972-1973): Starless & Bible Black, Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Red, USA. Only Red doesn't feel like a sketchbook, even though one will want to die on a hill to include Fracture, LTIA (part 2), Lament, Easy Money. If you listen closely, you can even detect that nostalgia is probably driving much of your affection for the album Red, but since it opens with Red and closes with definitely one of the greatest Fripp songs ever, it's easy to forget. Wetton's voice is often thing (though not on Starless; the next time he sounded that real and present is Carrying No Cross with UK). His lyrics also seem a rather gratuitously overstated attempt to NOT resemble Pete Sinfield's floral overstatements. But none of this matters, because the screamingestly best album from this period is USA, and you'd damn well better get the version that has this era's versions of Fracture and Starless. The version of Larks' Tongues in Aspic (part II) is also definitive. This is actually one of the greatest live albums ever. More than anything, it pitches a strong case that this was the greatest KC incarnation ever.
Phase III (1981-1984). Que mirabilis! Three King Crimson albums with the same personnel on it. Unprecedented. Meanwhile: Discipline, Beat, Three of a Perfect pair. Once again, Fripp (and company this time) are dialing in a thing. Discipline has a freshness (who saw it coming) that will make me listing it behind Beat seem idiosyncratic. "Elephant Talk," "Frame by Frame" (especially Frame by Frame" and "Matte Kudasai" are as statementy of an opening statement as you could wish and, once again, a much better sequencing of differences in intensity than from phase I. "Sheltering Sky" just seems like another pass at the "talking Drum" and I never got into the groove of other, and Indiscipline and Discipline are both just fine. This is all hair splitting. But "Neal & Jack & Me" comes barreling out of the gate, and Requiem drifts even further into the ugly/beautiful (i.e., sublime) guitar soundscapes that Fripp has been veering toward. I also really liked the jaggedness of the "Howler." "Heartbeat" pretty treacly (more of that damned attempt contrast) but "Waiting Man" is more authentic; Belew's voice is as much an enormous asset (over Wetton) as his guitarwork. Neurotica is Indiscipline v.2, "Two Hands" is more sappy contrast, but I can live through it with Belew singing. There's a live version of Satori in Tangiers which is just crushing. Ultimately, it's the further reaches this disc reaches that puts it ahead of Discipline for me. However, "Three of a Perfect Pair" is the third of a perfect pair songs ever. Side One is all "sensible" music up to Nuages, which (like the movie Avatar) required an invention of new technologies to realize. And from that techno-atmospheric miasma, the descent into a whole smashscape of electronic guitar noise occurs. I even dug "Dig Me" back in the day, despite its completely unhinged guitar line. "No Warning" one-upping "Requiem" and everything snapping back to a disciplined focus with a gnarly third entry in the Larks' franchise.
Phase IV (1995-2003). Here we see "exploration" working backward: ConstruKction of Light, the Power to Believe, THRAK, the ProjeKcts. THRAK is what happens when you cross-breed phase III and phase II, the gnarliness of tone from phase II in electronic form and the "pop" sensibility of Belew's brilliant songwriting in place of Wetton's hamfistedness. IT's "Level Five" and "Happy With What You Have to be Happy With," plus the feel of the album overall, that makes TPTB edge out TCOL, plus I'm so off-put by "ProzaKc Blues" and "ConstruKction of Light"--Belew's vocals sound thin and have lost their wit here, though not entirely on the album. The "Kc" pun feels suspicious, but Larks' 4 and FraKctured aren't uninteresting ... still, it feels more toward re-tread than re-explore. Again, may be live, but that makes it essential, of course. God knows, you may never want to listen to it. As a chunk of stuff, ProjeKcts (especially #3 and #4, and even ProjeKct X) are less unhinged . In terms of listening to a whole disc, I always happily wallow through these.Overall, discs I listen to completely the most often: USA (40th anniversary), Three of a Perfect Pair, the ProjeKcts.
