Large Commercial California Queen Breeder of New World Carniolan - Strachan Apiaries

- Follow along as Jose Uribe, a Northern California Commercial Queen Breeder and Beekeeper, heads to Yuba City, California to meet up with Philip Strachan-Russell, Vice President of Strachan Apiaries, Inc. Jose is going to pick up a NWC Breeder Queen that has been instrumentally inseminated with Caucasian germplasm brought in from overseas.
Strachan Apiaries Inc., founded in 1954 by Don Strachan, is the world’s largest producer of the New World Carniolan Queen Bee. The New World Carniolan was originally established in 1982 by Susan Cobey and Tim Lawrence in California. All of Strachan's breeding stock is hygienically tested, and the reliability of the New World Carniolan program is time tested and industry proven. The New World Carniolan line are known for being very conservative allowing the bees to overwinter well, they start to fly at much cooler temperatures (48-50 degrees), they're very gentle, and also hygienic.
Today Strachan Apiaries, Inc. manages upwards of 10,000 hives in addition to their breeding program.
Stay tuned through the end of the video when Jose heads back to Butte County, California to share how we set up our breeders in a timing box in preparation for grafting cells. This year we are grafting an excess of 40,000 cells and producing upwards up 15,000 mated queens using 3000 queen mating nucs from the months of March thru September.

I love Strachan NWC Queens and that's all I use. Their breeders are amazing. Daughters winter well here in Southern Ohio. They are gentle and make a good honey crop. None better.

@@TheCaliforniaBeekeeper hey jose I’m in it for honey production and a little queen rearing only for myself nothing big time, down to 15 hives as I had 2 dead outs coming out of winter so I will get my count up to say 20 hives that’s manageable for me.

Yes they have great history and we have a lot of trust in the Breeder queens we get from them. The daughters that are produced with our drone stock makes a great blend of genetics

Looking good Jose! Did you just cut a queen excluder for those dividers or are those commercially available somewhere? I bought some of those plastic circular entrance discs that I was going to mount on some thin plywood for the dividers. They have a Queen excluder setting, but I like the idea of the whole thing being an excluder.
Yes sir, I cut up an excluder just for this timing box. The scrap pieces can be used to build wood bound dividers for timing boxes.

Very nice video,May I ask are the NWC gentle bees meaning you can handle a BIG colony without gloves ? The carnies I have been getting are more defensive then I would Like too keep at home with children.
The Allegro Italian first generation queens I could almost work without personal protection .What a pleasure too work bee like that,unfortunately they eat up all your honey

Hello. I pulled the girls from shed a week ago monday. Temps have been as high as 56 to low of 28. ATM they have 1 gal bucks and a pound on them as we are in a 3 day wet and cold. Maybe this year i can get a couple extra of my carnie/cauc Black Queens sent to you. They as you can see do good up here in cold temps. They winter better then a Italian for sure. Best of luck. Note hope warms up next week for us. soon the trees and such should open up for the Girls. Will be like 6 weeks still before we can graft

@@TheCaliforniaBeekeeper The generations of adaptations of pure bred Carniolan Queens. Looking for pure carnies without any chance of getting an Italian cross breed. I purchased some of Dennis Lohmans naturally mated Carniolan Queens some years ago and was satisfied with the queens. They crossed with some Italian drones and I have a cross. So I would like to go with a completely pure bred. Very gentle bees and they are good honry producers. I am not looking to pollinate fruit trees and move hives and risk the chance of cross breeding. Our winters and climate are almost identical to where I will be getting the queens from. Trying to get better winter survivability out of my hives. I am going for overwintered nucleas hives this year with the queens.

la razón por la que dividí esta caja en 3 con un excluidor fue para que la reina pueda estar confinada en un espacio más pequeño. Tenerla en un espacio más pequeño nos permite hacer mejor nuestro injerto
