  • We fostered an elephant orphan, Mbegu, in Kenya in 2014. Her Mother was shot after she killed a tribal woman. She was rescued and raised by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.
She is currently at the Voi Orphanage, and will soon be returned to the wild
    in Tsavo East National Park.

What Mbegu went through on that horrible day broke my heart. I am so grateful that SWT gave her another chance at love and happiness. I pray for her and all the elephants.

The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust have been a God send to the elephant orphans of Kenya. Long may their work continue to support the balance between community and environment.

She is a survivor! Thank you all in DSWT. Your hard work and dedication paid off, when she brought her baby to show off. It’s the final joyful moment in the life journey.

Not that I belong to the over sentimental animal lovers but now I am struggeling to keep my eyes dry. What a wonderful story. I hope that she and her calf will stay safe.

I'm sure you'll see Mbegu whenever you go to Voi. I have a feeling she will visit the Unit as often as she can especially when she has kids. :)
Happy New Year to you both!

Elephants give birth for the first time around the age of 15, so it will be another 7 years before Mbegu conceives.

Her name means "seed" in Swahili. She was named by Mishak because she was so small they could carry her. I had the privilege of meeting her in 2016.

Mbegu is not out in the wild yet, she's still a resident at Voi, now aged 10.

Will her close contact with humans cause Mbegu to be at risk in the wild by being too trusting?? Certainly hope not.

Good question. As the orphans grow and spend more time with wild elephants, they learn from the wild ellies to be wary of unknown humans. I know of no case where a former orphan was poached due to being too trusting.
