Hello Sabine, you are clearly a good educator - I got 100% in the quiz after watching your video only once and never before having heard about either the distinction between synchronous and asynchronous communication or what is a parasocial relationship! I wish I spoke German as well as you speak English.
A few different ideas, & a song about the lateral thinker / mathematician combination in channel. 😢 All I write is free. TRAP MATH The moneyish mathish who make tech with money to sell for money ..not think that if a person hasn't money they should receive the tech entitled. I write about a new cruel written math called trap math. It is where the answer's also the problem the to solves. Here, money is said to solve the problem free writer lateral thinkers have, our not being provisioned the free hardcore writer's tech we await. It is also the reason why we haven't the that writers tech. Really, free writer lateral thinkers should be receiving hardcore writers tech because technology is deserved of free writer lateral thinkers, who's least barbaric decisions have upsides and solve problems before their time. We are a worthwhile investment. Money shouldn't come into it. Technology is a human thing to do, but because of money being thought a factor, we are being treated like typical starving artists. What was the point of teaching us lateral thinking not to provision us our tech? It doesn't make sense. "A lateral thinker hasn't the money for tech equipment, because a lateral thinker hasn't the money for tech equipment". Trap math. It's 'slap in the face' verbal math'. It's like .. Man says to his wife "I love you ". She says "Why" He responds "Because I just do". (Shut up Karen).
It is as though when humans hear the same thing said twice (eg "Why do we get married?" .. "Because people get married") it can be tad more convincing. It's discourages questions. You'll find beneath the questions that are also the answers, are the real reasons you should be doing something else. Lateral thinkers should be being provisioned & given the free writers tech we need to write faster & more the less people pick up pens the riskier free writing becomes. Money interferes with our receiving this tech, because it is applied to answer & question of receiving it. We get older, & faster at coordinating solutions thinking deeper still, but are being left in the lurch in the shallow end alone. We need our tech now. ⬇️ FREE WRITER LATERAL THINKERS STILL AWAIT PROVISIONED HARDCORE WRITERS TECH: Howdy. .. I write about time & abiogenesis. Help yourself to my work. ..Take the work, & I can write more. It's all I can do without the free hardcore writers tech that had never been provisioned for lateral thinkers, the less people pick up pens the riskier it is to be a writer, whilst everyone at any problem mentioned which they not want to look at scream "what about me!" for their attention. It feels like we are being squeezed out. I won't be being squeezed out. I won't be beating my head against nothing left to know anymore against disablers. Best case scenario is that writers will start to write terrible things. When a writer isn't happy, as lateral thinkers know, writing in a depressed state isn't all that fun. I hope somebody has a spec of hope here. Why would the truth hurt so that asholes burn clothes on front lawns about it, if the mathish enabling lateral thinker's providing us out writers tech? It looks to me, by the plan in lieu of receiving the tech, like It's absolutely certain writers won't be provided it. I call those angry ones who like to say things to people that hurt them but cannot tell the difference between mean things that hurt & truth that does 'Bulldozers in the briar patch'. It's not me that's hurting them. It's not even the truth that does. It's the collective shock threshold for truth that hurts that does. So long as lateral thinkers are thought to be the typical 'starving artist' variety writer & aren't facilitated, the lower the collective shock threshold for truth that hurts, & the more of those asoles are going to be getting around. ..I'm desperate for my tech equipment. I'm 41. I need to be updated. It seems to me though that luckily for me ..free writer lateral thinkers are high maintenance. I mentioned I wrote about time. Tech equipment would save me time. Just like the solving problems unintentionally solution first & before their time saves me time. Just like the bulldozer does. It is meant for me. If not provisioned, then truth that hurts will raise the collective shock threshold by that it hurts more the more there are who can't take no for an answer the lower that threshold. It's a bit of a seesaw effect. How aggressive bulldozers are comes down to how low the collective shock threshold of the people. I may not want people hurt by the things I say, but my wants are irrelevant. I am an instrument of truth, as much a witness to my own life as anyone else is.
Fear not. I don't trust you. Or anyone else on UA-cam. You say some things that are interesting. Mostly I find you irritating. But I find most academics thus. Even my friends with whom I do not have a "parasocial relationship".
My favorite thing is when people leave comments on videos talking to the creator, as if they are going to read the comments. Lots of delusional people online.
I'm just a seamstress from Finland but I watch your videos for your levelheaded approach to topics. I love science but lack friends to talk about it, so your videos are like listening to a (parasocial relationship) friend and then going forward to read more about some topics. Thank you for that.
@@4X6GP Seamster, like baxter for baker-sister, but not like roadster or forester, would be seam-sister. Though to me what people choose to call themselves is none of my business, really.
I know exactly what you mean. I am a retired nurse and only one friend, a retired builder, not even my student grandsons is interested in any of these science for the layman types of video or podcasts. My friend studied A level physics and chemistry many years ago at school. He grew up on a farm. Was a qualified plumber and electrician and ran a small construction company with his late partner. He is interested in stuff and interesting to talk to.
@@deltalima6703do you know Ive never thought of that. But men were tailors. They made men's clothes. My mum's friend back in the 1930s worked in a tailor's shop but was not allowed to work on jackets. Women were just not clever enough. 😅. When she trained as a seamstress (dressmaker) they were not allowed to wear lipstick. Where else do you store the pins as you take them in and out of the fabric but in your mouth.? Lipstick on the pins would have stained the cloth. 😮
@@CAThompson that is a really strange reply. I must assume that you are unaware of non-litteral uses of the word love? It is not a litteral love as one has for loved ones. It is “oh, I just love how Keanu Reeves appears to be a very kind mand”. Are you perhaps on the spectrum?
i love that sabine will just flat out say "i'm as expressive as a brick", it's a lovely self-aware neurodivergent response i totally vibe with. some really great points here, well communicated.
Part of the problem is that her native German has a totally different melody than English and encodes less emotions in tone. Or plainly: German already sounds deadpan to English speakers to begin with. We encode most of that with modal particles instead. I have been trying to correct that by doing (for me) overly excited antics when speaking English.
Having worked around many "bricks", Sabine is definitely the most expressive I've ever seen! 'Tis better to make us think rather than just airing information.
I keep my sanity with social media by minimizing my time on it. I really like your program and am subscribed. You're smart and funny. That's a great combo! 🙂
Congratulations on hitting the remarkable milestone of 1 million UA-cam subscribers! Your scientifically precise videos have left a significant impact on your audience. Thanks 😊
Most comedians today make tons of silly jokes in the hope one of them is good. In the end this becomes a brainless tirade of nothingness. Sabine often tries to show different angles to what she just said... this often is unexpected and makes us laugh. It is very important to show even the best written script is not absolute truth.
I appreciate you asking fans to defend against their cognitive biases over defending you; definitely improves the trust your followers will have for you :) And congratulations on 1 million subscribers!
Well, Ms. Quantum Physicist, this episode blew my mind. 🤯 I teach university-level technical writing, part of which is explaining the importance of in-person oral and written and (increasingly) online communication. You gave me a great deal of information. I watch your channel for the science without the gobbledygook, leavened with your wit and welcome sarcasm. I didn’t expect to get lecture fodder. Thanks. 😊
"... [I]n group behavior is a huge cognitive bias ... [S]o protect your rationality rather than me. I'll be fine, don't worry. Just let them talk." Another small gem! Thank you, Sabine!
I watch your channel because the content is non-ideological with a bit of humor. I also spent years working in Germany as an opera singer and I find your accent comforting. I have learned a lot. Thank you 🙏🏽
I definitely don't dig everything that Sabine says and shares online but I trust her for numerous reasons including that she's willing to say straight-out when she doesn't understand a statement or question, or even just say she doesn't know enough about a subject to answer properly. There's no fluffing around and no trying to sound more knowledgeable than she is. I want to emulate this especially since I've tended to over-apologise and over-explain, I just need to use less words sometimes. As for emojis, this one 🤷🏻♀️ does a lot of work. I use it when being sarcastic and/or jokingly offering up suggestions or scenarios.
I trust Sabine to communicate her best understanding of what she presents. However, whenever she presents on a topic I know about, she gets the broad strokes right, but invariably omits the key details; not because she is hiding anything, but because details are subtle. Unfortunately, the implications of details often go far beyond the details' size, some enough to change the whole picture. Probably if she talked to enough different people she could get the whole story, but that would take more time than she probably has to spare. This is not just Sabine's problem. It is a problem shared by almost all people doing journalism. It is very hard, and very rare, to do better. To be absolutely clear, I do not fault Sabine. She is much better in this than many who get more attention. But I do wish she would dig deeper, sometimes, even at the cost of having time for fewer vids.
And when those key details and nuance are missing from videos on sensitive social issues, the formula of broad strokes and bad jokes becomes mildly offensive and somewhat concerning. After feeling burned twice, I've decided to view these kinds of videos from hwr with strong skepticism.
13:30 I just lost a years-long friend over this. He was a fan of someone who did something stupid, and he defended this person to such a degree, he threw away our friendship and called me an enemy. We were not even in disagreement about the "stupid person" in question, but he had attached his life to that identity and decided it was more important to stay on their side then stay my friend. Many such cases.
makes me think of cults, religions, politics, idols, superstitions, fans and stans, zealots, hero-worship, mob/pack/group mentality the problems with debunking things, backfire effect
@@WrongParadox I didn't understand cults until a neighbor - when I was a very young man - insisted I read Dianetics by L. Ron Hubbard. I read the first chapter and thought, "huh." I read the second chapter and thought, "huh?" Third: "huh??" Each chapter got stranger and stranger, but I understood the method behind that madness. If one believes more than some crucial amount, they become too invested in the narrative to remain objective. I was on the other side of that divide: each chapter became harder to accept. I'm stubborn and made it about a third of the way through, mostly fueled by curiosity and disbelief... people really believe this stuff? Anyway, I could see that investment is what makes cults work. In a successful indoctrination the novitiate can' no longer afford to back out.

And they PAY for it. So, what do you expect if you can subscribe for free?
This was thought provoking, Sabine. It made me realise that we, as video consumers, hunger for authenticity because it increases the illusion of the parasocial relationship. We strongly desire human connection, and the more that it sounds like you're hearing from a real person who is just talking their real thoughts directly to you, the more that desire is satiated. In a world where it is hard to find and connect with people, as it can be for many people in this digital age, it makes sense that we would lean heavily into this need. I'm a victim of it myself, clearly, as I sit here writing this comment to you, hoping that you will find some meaning in it.
This is pretty straight forward. The simple response to the query, - "How do I know I can trust you" ? - is 'You can't'. Trust is the gradation of confidence. 'Belief' is some quantive measure. You can not 'know' someone else's mind or behavior. It's probability not an equality. I really like this woman. Maybe cause of her accent 😐. I don't need trust, any relationship is only superficial anyway, - if you know what I mean. 🥴
Thanks for the vid and the advice, Sabine. It's difficult to avoid parasocial relationships when we've all been moved onto the internet and the rest of the world, good and bad, is a keyboard away. Though I am grateful that it's allowed me to reach out and let creators know I appreciate their work directly
2:45 At this point I am very impressed and glad you chose this as a topic. “The success of language in conveying information is highly overrated. ” ― Robert Bolton Ph.D. (People Skills) “Every act of communication is a miracle of translation.” ― Ken Liu "Words are a wonderful form of communication, but they will never replace kisses and punches." -- Ashleigh Brilliant ... > Much of this difficulty in translation comes down to the subjective nature of human. We see, hear and interpret the world in terms of our own experiences and belief, our own personal "Rose coloured glasses". "And as he believed, so it was for him" - Richard Bach > It may appear surprising to some, that in an age of high tech data and information transfer on a global basis, we are also in a period where communication is least effective. > You are a gem Sabine :)
You are far better in explaining the problems with social media than I. I never was exposed to it until late in my 75 years of life. It’s too late for me, so I pretty much ignore it all. But you are a great asset in helping others to understanding its problems..
What brings me here is a level headed, rational, science proof focused, intelligent person who breaks down complex topics for us in an understandable way without disrespecting us by stripping away important details. So thank you, have a great day Sabine!
Then add to the mix idioms, nuance, and uncommonly used words. Communication can be difficult even when it is synchronous. Think of how many marriages fail due to communication issues. Thanks for another great video.
Always use your own judgment, usually it is quite easy to see what is true or not by just doing a little research on your own to make sure :) Sabine have not said anything I find untrue this far...
In my experience, the best thing for keeping a level head on the internet is to never respond to something immediately. Read it, inevitably get angry, upset, offended, etc. But don’t reply. Go away and try to think about it reasonably for a moment. Especially thinking about it from different perspectives: e.g. this is what I think they meant, or how they meant it. But did they really? Is there another way to interpret what they said? Then if you still want to respond, take the most positive interpretation of what they wrote and respond to that. If you can’t think of a positive interpretation, then just don’t respond. Your mental health will thank you.
Sabine, this was well done and informative. I'm going to share this with a couple of social media "influencers" that like learning about this exact subject. Thank you) 🙏 🙏 🙏
I would add simplex and duplex to the two types of communication. Duplex would be where information passes constantly between both parties facilitating 'repair'. Simplex would be those situations in which one person talks and the other person doesn't listen, they just wait for their turn to talk; a bit like talking to my mother.
And then there are people who don't wait for their turn, talk at length without pausing to give you your turn to talk, and take offense if you try to interrupt.
@@brothermine2292 At least some of that might be from being neurodivergent. I and others with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder can struggle to carry out conversations in a balanced way, I know it's taken me effort and practice to get more proficient at having a good flow of give and take in conversations.
Hello. It makes me happy that you are worried enough about this that you make a video about it. It is very easy to abuse this kind of relationship even with the best of intentions. Ultimately we know you (to a degree) but you can never know us. Keep up the good work Sabine.
Love your dry, self-depreciating humour and of course the depth of whatever subject materiel you present to us! Just a mechanic and boat driver who thoroughly appreciates a great science professor. Thanks for all the wonderful content.
I really appreciate and respect Sabine for her ability to communicate about difficult subjects, but i think she's starting to reach for subjects to talk about. I also enjoy her musical videos.
@@Thomas-gk42 yeah, the ones on mental health, capitalism, and trans issues have all missed the mark and don’t reflect the time spent on reading up she puts into physics ones.
Thank you again for this eye opening video about social media and the relationships formed within. I have learned a lot and always do watching you well made videos and good written script. Stay curious!
Thank you for the very thoughtful and thought provoking video. I for one watch you because you present interesting current science topics with a touch of humor, but not the drama so many put into their videos. Seriously, most you-tubers over play the theatrics so much it feels like i'm watching the 70's children's programing I grew up with.
I suspect if we get one major thing wrong about you while watching you - is that we don't know how much hard work you do to make a video. The time you spend researching a subject. Cross checking the facts. Double-checking the agenda that others may have. That even with all the knowledge you've already obtained - you have to ensure it's still relevant before you put it out there. The work that you have to do to dumb it down for the average viewer without sounding condescending. To attract intelligent, thoughtful viewers who want to learn - but don't need the degree to do it. And you do it with humor besides, which keeps it interesting and wanting to come back for more. There aren't many people who get it as right as you do, Sabine. Kudos.
Your dry sarcasm get's me all the time, I love it! "...given that I am as expressive as a brick" is gold! Ein sehr interessantes Video, wusste nicht, dass du Deutsch sprichst.
"as self expressive as a brick." Don't underestimate the power of your amazing deadpan humor, Sabine. I don't spend enough time on UA-cam to get into reaction videos, but if there was something you found worthy of reacting to, I know I would get a kick out of it!
Each word has a cluster of meanings, and those clusters are slightly different for each person in a conversation. Dictionary definitions are similar to the idea of absolute time, an interesting stepping stone towards understanding reality, but when you look hard enough, you learn that there is no such thing. The key is to include enough redundancy, extra clues, to help the reader figure out where they might have mismatched the intended meaning. You're right in that it is far easier for a real time audience of one, or a few people. It amazes me how well we get along once the audience scales to millions. There have to be thousands of incorrect interpretations of a given paragraph, probably in small clusters, but still, a huge amount of idea space accidentally gets explored every time words are uttered to an audience. Sabine, you do an awesome job, keep up the good work.
Dear Sabine, I have been watching your videos for YEARS. I simply cannot quantify the amount of knowledge I have gained, nor the amount of perspective I've gained through your honest, optimistic, educated, humorous, and unique take on physics, society, social media, and the innumerable subjects that you bravely tackle every week on your channel. First, and foremost, I must say THANK YOU. I must also say that I can count on one hand the total number of UA-cam videos that I have commented on over the last eight years. I simply do not have the time. However, I do not think I could ever sleep with any modicum of peace again if I did not say to you... WOW. THANK YOU. GREAT FRIGGIN JOB. WELL DONE. As well as every other conceivable compliment an eternity in the multiverse that could occur in an infinite spacetime. I intend to first share this video with my two daughters, then every single person I ever speak to for the rest of my life. CHEERS! J
Hey Sabine. You asked in the video what brings us here, so I figured I'd answer. For me personally, I really like your videos on physics, especially the quantum stuff. As an engineer, I always get a feeling that some physicists want to believe some kind of woo woo about the universe, that it's more complex and mystical than people think, and they know the secret. It's so refreshing to hear a science communicator like you taking a no nonsense approach that's easy to understand. Thanks!
Learning another language has given me a great insight into the importance of context in all aspects of communications. Many languages (my example came from Japanese), rely heavily on context, stripping out subject, object or even operative verb once the context is understood in much the same way as a paragraph of text will lose detail and a new context is established in the following paragraph. Everything I know about language I have learned since studying a language other than my own. This also taught me the importance of empathy, firstly wanting to understand and be understood and making an effort to interpret correctly what the other is trying to convey. Perhaps I am wrong, however my guess is that most viewers of UA-cam are not first language English speakers but in our egotistical way, those of us who are, will most likely not assume that there is a language barrier and will make little or no effort to allow for that. (Historically, the English approach is "Shout loud enough, they'll understand) I wish more English speakers were required to prepare material for publication online in another language, it would make for a much more empathic world. Finding a book for beginners in a new language, I see that an effort has been made to avoid ambiguity, that illustrations have been carefully chosen and that a euphemism is introduce only with help for the reader. Personally, I like the hybrid (synchronous /asynchronous) 😊communication of WhatsApp, which works for me over WiFi better than text, can carry all my attachments easily. I rarely misunderstand and am rarely misunderstood.
This video originally had a lengthy part about language difficulties, but it took somewhat overhand, so eventually I removed it. I understand what you mean (I think...), decoding a language is about more than just translating words.
When I speak in real life with newer non native English speakers I am mindful to avoid idioms, sarcasm, euphemism, metaphor, and so forth. I'll be mindful of switching tense and think "if I can't say this is in Spanish then I won't say it in english" (i have minimal/basic grasp of spanish). With advanced non native English speakers I can speak more freely but I am mindful to pause after sentence for them to process and respond (rather than going on and on and on). I have seen others do what you referenced which is to raise their volume and speak very loudly to a new non-native English speaker. I find it so odd, they're generally not hard of hearing, although sure sometimes people are hard of hearing too. However online you're right, I type freely as does every other language. I'm often in comment sections with dozens of languages, each of course with their own script. The [problematic] translate button is sufficient for casual purposes like UA-cam comments. UA-cam comments are usually full of irrational thought, ignorance, wrath, immaturity, etc. Prior to UA-cam comments I thought most people must be very intelligent but comments have single handedly changed that - and that has nothing to due to their use of language, poor communication skills, or low interpersonal effectiveness. For example people think the world is flat and it doesn't matter how many syntax errors they make in stating it - or what language this is expressed in.
@@SoulDelSolAlso try to avoid phasal verbs, e.g. "look up" what does that mean? Literally look up? Or idiomatically "find in an index". When I first started teaching English as a foreign language that was a huge complaint from my students. I had no idea how prevalent they were until I came across a dictionary of 80,000 phasal verbs! Nearly every verb in the English language has a formal and informal (idiomatic) form. 😵💫(Surprised and confused)

I remember an Agathie Christie novel where the clue to discovering the murderer was based on the sentence, "he wasn't there". Depending on where the emphasis was placed in the sentence - 'he', or 'wasn't', or 'there'! That gives three totally different meanings 😀
@@stevealexander8010 *He* wasn't there. Someone else was. He *wasn't* there. He is now, or possibly I'm accusing someone of lying. He wasn't *there.* He was (turns and points) *there.* Sounds totally different to me, not like a slight difference in nuance.

Wow, Sabine's video was really informative and eye-opening! It's so important to be aware of the dangers of trusting strangers, and she explained it in such a clear and concise way. I really appreciate her expertise and the effort she put into sharing this important message with the world.

Also, this is one of the best para-scientific channels on UA-cam. I really appreciate that Dr Hossenfelder doesn't just post about her field - a wider view from her perspective is incredibly valuable for us
Why I am here: I feel the US public education system failed me, especially in science and math. What I like about Sabine's channel: You just explain things, and if something is not clear you give a decent amount of Google-able information. You have a very even tone, which my anxiety disorder appreciates. Also, I love dry humor and sarcasm over gross humor or critical snarkiness. It's a good balance, and I don't get distracted from the learning part. TLDR: I am here because I appreciate the way you explain things, your dry humor, and the interesting information you provide.
Trusting and verifying go hand in hand. You influence my interests in many different, often fascinating or fun topics, and you do so in a friendly, engaging, informative fashion, thank you very much. The belief and verification are on me. It's my job to look elsewhere, passively or actively, for more data and related ideas. When I find something I find interesting, and hope others will, also, sometimes I insert new comments into our presumed continuing asynchronous conversations. Time will tell whether such interactions retain my interest. Certainly, verified trust experiences will help to build such tenuous relationships. Thanks for prodding my thoughts on this today, starting yet another interesting asynchronous conversation.
I trust you, Sabine. I was particularly convinced by an exchange I saw (I cannot remember whether it was on youtube or twitter) between Dr Becky (Smethurst) and you on the problem of unwanted male advances to female science influencers. I was already following you both but the exchange reminded me of your (plural) humanity and subsequently, I find I trust both of you more.
If you have seen her nonsense "capitalism is good" video, which was counterfactual and didn't do even the most basic research into the subject and was a recital of age-old and conclusively debunked capitalist propaganda myths (e.g. the "barter economy evolving towards fiat currency" theory), you would know you absolutely can't trust her other than when it comes to a very narrow set of subjects that she's an actual expert in. Some of her videos are lower in quality than an average freshman in that field would produce in the first 2 weeks of study.
@@lynth Sure, or maybe you're biased to your knowledge on the subject, and maybe it doesn't need to be some grand conspiracy where everything we know is wrong. Maybe age-old theories were that way for a reason, because they are intuitive, and things will naturally follow that way sometimes, just maybe not all the time. Things are nuanced, and she has to bring a high level description to the masses - it's not an easy job.
@@kindlin Calling someone biased in response to pointing out broken arguments isn't addressing the broken argument. The whole "money started from ordinary individuals exchanging cows and shells and banks are just an extension of that!" line of thinking never made any sense and is a thoroughly debunked idea that nevertheless keeps being repeated over and over as if it were fact, especially in laypeople books where it's ubiquitous. So a person parroting such a debunked idea seriously brings their credibility into question.
@@nikobitan7294 Money has developed hundreds of times independently of each other all around the globe. It's proven that cultures have used something similar than money at some point, yet didn't do before and it's absolutely impossible that these cultures could have had any contact ever. So there is no one true origin. And fact is, and that is fact, that all these cultures have been using barter economy before there was money and have pretty much ditched it once there was money in favor of trading for money, and that hundred of times all around the globe, makes it totally okay to say that one developed into the other one, even when there have been small local discrepancies on how exactly that happened in one case or in another case. Lack of details in a description and small deviations in similar events, both don't make a general statement false.
I love your hilariously sarcastic barbs that you just toss out with all the emotional emphasis of a brick. Makes them ten times funnier. A few different ideas, & a song about the lateral thinker / mathematician combination in channel. 😢 All I write is free.
TRAP MATH
The moneyish mathish who make tech with money to sell for money ..not think that if a person hasn't money they should receive the tech entitled.
Man says to his wife
"I love you ".
She says "Why"
He responds "Because I just do".
⬇️
FREE WRITER LATERAL THINKERS STILL AWAIT PROVISIONED HARDCORE WRITERS TECH:
Howdy.

A piece of brick moving to your head has a very expressive and persuasive message in it.
@@CAThompson that is a really strange reply. I must assume that you are unaware of non-litteral uses of the word love? It is not a litteral love as one has for loved ones. It is “oh, I just love how Keanu Reeves appears to be a very kind mand”.

i love that sabine will just flat out say "i'm as expressive as a brick", it's a lovely self-aware neurodivergent response i totally vibe with. some really great points here, well communicated.
But Sabine works with other people and has a script and is learning. (Not defending, just stating the obvious).
My favourite brick.
Part of the problem is that her native German has a totally different melody than English and encodes less emotions in tone. Or plainly: German already sounds deadpan to English speakers to begin with. We encode most of that with modal particles instead. I have been trying to correct that by doing (for me) overly excited antics when speaking English.
Well, a colorfull brick as part of a otherwise boring grey wall can indeed become quite expressive or can it?
Why is it neurodivergent? Am I missing sth?
Having worked around many "bricks", Sabine is definitely the most expressive I've ever seen! 'Tis better to make us think rather than just airing information.

Largly this is what I say in my comment 🤣
@@Ctrl_Del_0 I'm sharing what's been in my head, though.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
This is pretty straight forward. The simple response to the query, - "How do I know I can trust you" ? - is 'You can't'.
Trust is the gradation of confidence.
'Belief' is some quantive measure. You can not 'know' someone else's mind or behavior. It's probability not an equality.

I trust you Sabine - is that right !!!

Well at 80 years old, I certainly understand you and agree with you on most subjects. I am doing what I can to improve the world, (not much).
This was unexpected ! So basic yet non obvious and one has to reflect deeply upon it. Useful even in very close relationships. Thanks for this.
Stop! I have a question................... Hmm, you're right, I can't stop you to ask a question; next time I'll raise my hand, that's gotta work.

I would add simplex and duplex to the two types of communication. Duplex would be where information passes constantly between both parties facilitating 'repair'. Simplex would be those situations in which one person talks and the other person doesn't listen, they just wait for their turn to talk; a bit like talking to my mother.
Maybe you could do less talking to her, then there'll be less chance for her to ignore you.
That's the difference between hearing and listening
And then there are people who don't wait for their turn, talk at length without pausing to give you your turn to talk, and take offense if you try to interrupt.
@@brothermine2292 At least some of that might be from being neurodivergent.

@@SabineHossenfelder Maybe you should do a separate video on that topic?
@@SabineHossenfelder I'd be interested in that.
I'm a dispatcher from Barbados in the Caribbean and i watch your video because i love science as a hobby but I lack friends that are interested in it as deeply as i am so your video is a way to keep updated with the cutting edge of research of all kinds and a parasocial relationship with you like a teacher/friend i can relate to then form my own opinions on the topics and doing more reading or looking up more videos in my case to keep myself in the loop.
Sabine! Love ALL your videos, love your humour, adore your snark!
I was on FB, few years back. After a year or so I grew frustrated by the realisation that, almost nobody was interested in a discussions or opinions sharing, every time the story just deflected back to, “look at my latest….” creation, food, gift, make up. I canceled, really removed everything, from FB ever since. I have no regrets and don’t miss a thing, thank you!
I remember an Agathie Christie novel where the clue to discovering the murderer was based on the sentence, "he wasn't there". Depending on where the emphasis was placed in the sentence - 'he', or 'wasn't', or 'there'! That gives three totally different meanings 😀
Except - NOT totally different. Slight difference in nuance.
A murder is announced, I think that came from. And the sentence was: "She wasn't there."
👍@@florisv559
@@stevealexander8010 Have you read the book?
@@stevealexander8010 *He* wasn't there. Someone else was.
He *wasn't* there. He is now, or possibly I'm accusing someone of lying.
He wasn't *there.* He was (turns and points) *there.*
Sounds totally different to me, not like a slight difference in nuance.
If only the masses knew that, as influencers only influence those that know almost nothing about almost anything and here enters the ´´Always question´´ .
That's why knowledge is power...!!! Great video.
I actually can't come up with anything I wish you did that you aren't already doing. I think you do a great job in communicating the content. In some of the more physics heavy videos (quantum mechanics tutorials), I get lost in the equations but that's not something you can help with on UA-cam. I think your sense of humor is amazing and so are the topics you cover! Thanks very much for doing what you do. I really enjoy your channel!
wow, this was super interesting and useful, these types of 'don't trust me' videos are always favorites of mine but this was next level on the depth of it
Having learned of your 1 million subscribers, it gives me pause to reflect upon the odds of the particular person (you) now reading this comment are one million to one against. Congratulations! 😊You have achieved a nearly impossible feat already today! A parasocial miracle just happened!
I wonder how much this video will change people’s lives. Great video as usual. Thanks
I appreciate the study you put into your posts, the humor & all that I can learn at those times where I can keep up with the subject. I imagine that your 1M subscribers are of a higher plane of knowledge, as I laughingly imagine myself as an important component. This post interests me because I know a person that is incapable of dialog in everyday verbal exchanges. He insists others remain absolutely silent while he goes on at length, droning on & on, barely taking time to breathe, delving into detailed minutiae, endless boring babble & repitition. Uh, thanks for the post.
You don't have to put up with him though. 'You need to shut up and listen' could be a good circuit-breaker, or at least the response from him could be entertaining.
@@CAThompson Thank you. Yes, that’s what I do & as I listen I regard my own misguided desire to be the center of conversation or to insert that question I might have asked, only then to figure it out on my own. Perhaps you recognize that I listen through the parasocial conversation with an unspoken sense of humor.
@@user-no1cares I can dominate conversations if I don't check myself as I've a tendency to talk a lot. Feeling like one is the centre of the Universe doesn't mean one gets to hog attention. 🙂
We all know him. He’s in triplicate. We’re just glad he isn’t twins.
This parasocial to your channel wishes to say, you are amazing and keep doing what you do!
I really enjoyed this - sincere thanks. Your million subscribers status is well deserved - evidence of trust. Your clear delineation of facts from opinions does a lot for such. Cheers, Christopher
Hi Sabine, I started watching your channel about a year ago when I was in bed with Covid, I kept watching because the content is both educational and entertaining, I know you mock your own personality but I find you to have an endearing nature.
I’m a musician from the UK that now lives in Australia.
That’s it, now you know a bit about me.
Keep up the great content and thank you.
Sabine is such a good friend of mine
I think of her as a friendly acquaintance but frankly it's a bit of an honour to me that she knows I exist and remembers that. 😸

(I've waited a long time to use that joke)
Wow, Sabine's video was really informative and eye-opening! It's so important to be aware of the dangers of trusting strangers, and she explained it in such a clear and concise way. I really appreciate her expertise and the effort she put into sharing this important message with the world.
This video explains why communicating at work via group chat or other form was not as easy as one would think. "Communicating in general is just difficult" thank you for that insight. I was assuming that the management where incompetent when actually like everone else they struggle. Keep up the good work from one of the million 😊.
One thing that helps me stay level-headed is meditation. I believe it helps me to differentiate between my thoughts and emotions while keeping the mind clear.
You're a great communicator of science, and I've been watching your interesting videos for a few years now.
Vielen Dank Dr. Hossenfelder! Wieder einmal ein super Videovortrag!
Thank you very much Doc Hossenfelder! Once again a super video lecture!
Thanks for putting into words (and backing it with science) confused thoughts I've had for my whole online life, especially the in-group behaviour part. Also, Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Erreichen einer Million Abonnenten!
🎉 Onnittelut Sabinelle!
Danke!
you are a great parabuddy!. instrumentality will never come but in essence, we progress towards it as the bonds established between humans grow in deepness and truthfulness. communication is the defining characteristic of the collective human experience and its betterment is synonymous with our progress as a society. truth comes to us, every day more so. to light!
Good content as always. Well done again, Sabine! Respect.
Thank you. I enjoy all your videos. I'm impressed with how much clear content you create.
Hugs to you and your common sense, which you know isn't that common. 😊
I come to your channel to learn new things and to have misconceptions corrected.
So much to learn so little time.
Also, this is one of the best para-scientific channels on UA-cam. I really appreciate that Dr Hossenfelder doesn't just post about her field - a wider view from her perspective is incredibly valuable for us
I trust you. Plus you are smart, funny your family is lucky to have you in rubberized lives.
I'm glad you share with us on UA-cam
Thank you for this, Sabine. I've especially noticed problems with text chat at work, how stressful it is to parse messages without context.
So adequate and to the point … feels ( yes and emotion) this is like a recursive multiverse analysis
I'm intrigued - do you remember what the gist was of that exchange?
I come to this channel because you're very good at explaining complex topics in terms I understand. And you're really funny.
I love your hilariously sarcastic barbs that you just toss out with all the emotional emphasis of a brick. Makes them ten times funnier. Even better, you explain things without hiding behind jargon, and without insulting the intelligence of your audience. My twelve-year-old, nerdy grandson agrees with me. Thanks!
Excelent and useful video, Sabine. Thanks for doing it.
You are great! Thank you for all your work, honesty and way of thinking... and sarcastic humor of course 😊
Thank you for this episode, lots to consider here.
There it is Sabine, thanks. You have just effectively articulated why most text based, survey based and online behavioral based analytics are way off the mark and must be iterated many times to be close to what really matters.
I am deeply fascinated with all things interpretation, perception. That layer of experience is as curious as anything.
Thank you for the video.
Great topic, well summarised. Thank you. I wish my parents had known how to communicate.
Great video, Sabine! I now understand better our communication habits today lead to much more miscommunication--not the least of which, the lack of opportunity to make repairs. Thanks so much.
I seldom understand your video's all the way through... this one was different. I learn a lot here.
