I was just thinking that exact thought right before I opened the comments and saw your understanding of what she brought with her vocal ability.Yes,indeed, her voice was a whole nother instrument.
This was the first lick I ever heard from the Empress of FUNK while blasting Soul Train on Saturday afternoon when I was 10 years old. It completely blew my mind. I wore out 3 copies of this Rufus album on vinyl. Peace, and Respect Miss Khan, the grooviest person I have ever experienced ✌️🎗️⚓
1976... That is what this album reminds me of.. My Mom bought it, and played it constantly! Our neighbor downstairs was also playing it, often at the same time. Everytime I hear any of these songs, I'm instantly transported back to that time.
Chaka Khan was so revolutionary. Her sound and look were equally amazing. As Whitney Houston said, Chaka was doing things that no other singer was doing....She was a total bad ass (in a good way). Shes the best example of how to be sexy WITHOUT trying to be. .
She brought all the white boys on board to that sweet brown sugar too...Sweet sound, sweet sexy grooves, sweet thing, gimme that Chaka Khan good time all the time...
Chaka has always been so awesome. She had that one signature dance move on every song. Smokey Robinson is the same way. He does one move on all of his music if it involves any dancing. LOL!!
When I was a teenager back then, I used to think there was magic in the back of Chaka Khan, because how could she singing like that with no other in the background. That's what I useto think. That was 1975 I was about to get ready start my seven grade Junior High School.
WHEN CHAKA WAS YOUNG BOY.....SHE WAS FINE ALL BY HER DAMN SELF.......SHE IS A LOT OLDER THAN ME BUT THAT DOESNT KEEP THE CRUSH FROM BEING REAL............
It's all over the industry. Everybody has rights to some kind of fee collection now a days. I'm a retired pro dancer (ballet, modern, tap, etc), tried my luck on B'way. It's crazy there too. Once you got your union card, certain stages could you perform on or not. Blew my hair back I tell ya! I as a performer had to be very careful as to where and with whom I performed, go figure. On the other hand I appreciate unions. I was taking care of and protected during my journeys ;-)
@ombudlady It does seem that way but I like it because it's their own signature move. That's just good quality music & entertaining, I think. I love Rufus & Chaka Khan. I listen & look at youtube videos everyday to stay connected to good old school music & bands.
@BeccaTilley , A few artist comes to mind that pushed the envelope. James Brown (American Bandstand & Soul Train), DiscoTex & Sex-O-Lettes fea Sir Monte Rock III (American Bandstand). Such demands forced the industry to change rules and even lessen fees. Midnight Special & Don Kirshners Rock Concerts helped usher in actually LIVE performances.
That's why when Hamish STUART gave her " What you gonna do for me," he knew He had a #1 hit. JUST like Atlantic Star "if your heart isn't in it"why do you hang(around).a number one hit"..☆☆■♤》♤》¡♡
@BeccaTilley, Back in that era, due to union rules (ASCAP/BMI/FCC) and the likes, didn't allow LIVE performances (singing or playing of an instrument to be broadcast on television. It would cost the said production company extra fees that were very steep. To paraphrase reaction from some artist, "If you want to hear a lip synce, then buy/listen to record. A live performance is supposed to be LIVE...).
I was 7 and this was the first 45 record my mother ever purchased for me dance with me. After she bought it she ( mom ) and dad made me dance an guess what that's the day I could dance better than them. LoL
@BeccaTilley, due to union rules at he time ASCAP/BMI/ and the like etc, mostly all televised performances were lip synced or canned if you will, to illiminate finacial obligations of a said production company. during that period there have been a few artist who refused to perform under such conditions. Seems the attitude from performers was, "if you want a lip synced performance, then listen to the record. My live performance is just that, LIVE..." to paraphrase.
i feel ya on that sistren...please check out SuSu Bobien,Charles Bradley,Dawn Tallman and Byron Stingly...i'll hit you up with more real soon. peaceness :)
A question on lip synching. I always assumed the artist was actually singing but the mike was off. Yes? I think I would get lost and not move my lips right if I didn't make a sound.
@BeccaTilley , it's gotten a little better for artist today but not much. It's so political/business like. I don't know it you watch ABC's The View, but many times the host(s) cut off or warn a guest who may try to sing a lyric for fun ( a simple Happy Birthday, etc) because their production company would now have to pay a fee for that lyric being sung on TV. Wild isn't it lol? Since you are studying the music field, ask your professors about such union crap.
@@JeffmChicago Thank you for posting. The rolling goofballs have ripped off every American artist, they made a career doing just that, so I thought they probably did this too.

Whoever idea it was to recruit Chaka Khan to be the lead singer of Rufus was a pure genius
She was friends with their first singer, Paulette McWilliams, who recommended Chaka when she left the group.
@@Tadaia Good to know
Paulette McWilliams introduced the Chaka to the band because she was leaving the group for a solo career
Prince described chakas voice as life itself. He worshipped her.
D777 Yes, Prince adored her, they were like brother and sister and he adored Patrice Rushen, who is a female version of him. ❤️☮️💋

From beginning to end.....nothing but good ole fashioned funk!
It t so much fun watching Chaka perform live with Rufus during the 1970's. Ms. Khan could cast a spell over the audience like no other!
