@@HebiHouse To me, it just ended with them accepting life as is. No REAL happy ending for Frank or the family. But I guess, “Such is life”. And that’s the message.
The basic gist of it is that the Catholic Church in the 70’s was in a radically new position after Vatican II, where it revised certain doctrine to adjust to the modern age. This new stance made lay people (non-clergy) more involved with the Church, but also invited more criticism of the Church’s involvement, compounded by traditional anti-Catholic sentiment in America (as they were seen as loyal to Rome, not the US). Consequently, they faced considerable scrutiny over their actions and had various rifts within the Church. Within the decade prior, JFK (nicknamed “Jack”) took the White House with his brothers. The Kennedy’s were openly Catholic and JFK was considered a young, charismatic, and moral authority (JFK’s presidency was optimistically referred to as “Camelot”). He used this goodwill to propel controversial policy like the Bay of Pigs Invasion and the Space Race (which, at the time, was more unpopular and criticized than nowadays). However, it was an open secret that JFK and his brothers were serial adulterers, and while he postured idealism and family values, JFK was also having tons of affairs all over the place (with the show referencing him coercing a presidential intern into an affair at his swimming pool). In the show itself, Pat’s projecting his own dissatisfaction with being forced into the celibate priesthood out of family obligation while more hypocritical men get to become president and the very picture of Catholicism while openly cheating on their wives.
did u know that the actor who plays frank murphy, Bill Burr, also plays father pat here, and if u hear him closely yelling u can actually hear some frank murphy mainly at 9:32
“I know you can do this!” “Alright…… I’m Sue.” “You know what you just did Frank? You let us in :)” yeah i know that’s not how it happened but that cut was pretty funny lmao
