Looks so great, drives so well, beautiful interiors... Dude, Peugeot have levelled up BIG TIME. Great brand. Sexier than the Germans and cost so much money less.
I have been driving a 2017 2008 GT Line for 5 years and generally I am pleased with it. I like the small steering wheel set up and the car has been comfortable to drive and good on fuel consumption. I was off the road for 10 weeks from last December due to the cam belt recall and spare part supply issues and very disappointing that no replacement vehicle was available. But I have been a Peugeot owner since 1983 and it is likely my brand loyalty will continue.
Can I ask if this was the older shape model that was recalled. We just had the same issue with a 70 plate 2008. It’s been sitting at a main dealership for 5weeks so far. Peugeot won’t provide good will even though it’s a very common fault and I know they’ve been recalled in many countries but not in the uk according to me telephone calls with Peugeot. Can I ask if you had to pay anything towards the repair?
Been driving a pre facelift GT model for close to 2 years. I would largely agree with the stop start issue, so that stays off all the time. The only other gripe is the head unit which would refuse to function when the ambient temperature is too high, which is a major pain when the AC is controlled by the screen. Otherwise, the overall refinements is very decent for the class. One thing the review fail to mention is the relative low kerb weight which you can really feel on the road when most compact SUV from a size above are hitting 1.8 tons.
I'm 5'8" I have no problem about seeing over the wheel. In fact it is the first car I've ever driven where I've not had to peer through the wheel and find part of the dials obscured. The reviewer says that to lower the wheel so he can see puts him in an unnatural driving position. He misses the point. He clearly wants to have the wheel up high because he's used to it. Here you drive in a different way with the wheel beneath you. Once you understand that, it drives like a go kart and every other driving position feels unnatural.
I have a GT purtech model with auto gear box brought it brand new in October 2023 done about 1500 miles so far had no issues with the auto gearbox or stop start may be it’s the presenters driving style
A dislike for any reviewer who cries about the visibility of those dials when he *wants* to sit as low as in a go-cart 🙅🏻♂️ The position is like that on purpose so you do sit high up and have better visibility out period. Good job Peugeot
Majority of people sit too low in whatever car. If you can't see part of your hood, you are sitting too low. I sometimes see drivers who sit so low, their head barely pops out of the dashboard. We are forced to buy a new car, since we got in an accident a few weeks ago (got hit from behind, car is declared economically total loss). We have our eyes on this one, because of the design. And a friend of mine had a similar 508, which he liked a lot. Although his was a 1.5 Diesel engine I think. I actually like the front lights of the previous (GT version) more and although last week you still could order those, as of yesterday I noticed you could only order the new facelift one. I'm searching for second hand ones (found one with almost no kilometers on it [6300km]), but then again I'm thinking if it isn't better to go with the hybrid one, to save on fuel consumption. And as I read in a comment here, help imitigate that start-stop problem. My only worry is the complaints of the distribution belt problems and its oil. But I do read that the hybrid version has a chain now, although I can't find proof of it. Cars have become very expensive, so I don't want to regret buying one. We already have to spread our money as much as it is.
Absolutely. My wife is 5ft 2" and she has no trouble at all with the i-cockpit. Maybe we have a reviewer who can't adapt - seems like there are a few of those reviewers in the UK.
We had an automatic Corsa rental with the same gear box as the 208. This had exactly the same issue with the stop start. It felt like the car would stall just as you slowed for a junction and then accelerated when you could see it was clear. It was actually dangerous.
I really don’t know what car you was driving but my wife’s Peugeot 2008 GT AUTO 24 model smashes my golf gtd 22 model auto out the water, it’s the comfiest car I’ve been in no jerky gear changes no lag no delay in starting off at junctions. Your review is way off the mark. The gear box is VERY smooth you do not feel the gear change …..🤷🏻♂️
The stopstart is annoying and this should have been sorted, by now. However where I Iive, not stopping and starting very often, it doesn´t bother that much. Again because of where I live, with largely clear roads, the auto suits the car well. I drive in mountainous areas, a lot. The transmission is intuitive and rarely hiccups. I hardly ever use the paddles, except for a bit of fun. The worst part of this and many other cars is having to use the screen to adjust the a/c....please all manufactures stop this nonesense. 23 000 kilometres and no problems in a Spanish spec car.
I agree with the person who commented that you are the first reviewer to slate the 8-speed gearbox. Others say it's class leading, so perhaps you just had a bad experience with the particular car you had. I've had an 8-speed Allure and it's great. Also the i-Cockpit small steering wheel set up - I'm 5 foot 8 inches and fussy about my driving position, but I love it and have no issue at all at seeing the dashboard. Next, the soft suspension(?)... actually it's not soft (are you sure you were speaking about a Citroën?). If anything, the one slightly critical comment I would make is that the rear seat ride is a little harsh and the chassis can become slightly unsettled over mid-bend bumps. That said, nothing that spoils the fun. Whilst I also like the Ford Puma, the finish and interior lacks a that special feel of the Peugeot, the infotainment screen looks like an afterthought in the Ford (the screen is tiny and faces straight, not at the driver) and having had a close relation suffer the Eco-Boom engine issue at 30k miles in their Puma and have to fight Ford for months before they finally accepted liability and agreed with the lease company to share the £7k bill (after much stress) I wouldn't touch Ford at the moment.
It’s annoying how you guys always make comparison to a VW group car!!!!! Not all of us like a VW group car and never will! Get it!! There are many unique quality cars from Toyota and Honda who you can make a comparison with! This Peugeot is a lovely car and so stylish!
I've had my facelift 2008 GT auto since August and mine behaves nothing like yours around town, where I spend 80% of my time. Are you driving with it set to Eco?
I've only heard journalists complain about the steering wheel. I've driven a 5008 GT Premium for two years and it is fine. No problem seeing the dials whatsoever.
Ive owned a 2008 GT Auto for the last two years and there's some things I disagree with about this review. The plus side of the 2008 are the finish , looks and the ride -which is very good generally on 17" wheels and the handling is OK. The minus are the engine, which like many of these 3 cylinders is great unless you rev it when it sounds like a bag of nails and uses a lot of petrol as the turbo comes in. Yes it's powerful on the turbo but at a price . I do agree the Auto-box is fairly poor and we also have to turn off the stop and start as it is very jerky. Another thing is I find the seats not that comfortable and you can not use the cruise control at all which is TOTALLY hidden behind the stering wheel.- I hope they have corrected this on the "new" model. I was hoping this upgraded model would have a modern hybrid engine but they obviously had the accountants cut that out!
I have the Hybrid in GT trim which you do not mention. It also has an automatic gearbox. When driving in town or slow-moving traffic it switches to electric drive below 5 mph and is perfectly smooth. Similarly when the car starts moving again. I wouldn't say I like any car's stop-and-start system, so I usually disable it anyway. What I don't like is the front footwells which are very narrow so my leg rests against the centre console mouldings when driving. The floor level is also very high when entering through the doors.
The hybrid wasn't available yet when this review was done. That hybrid version also has a completely different gearbox based on dual clutch logic, while the former gearbox was more of an automated gear shifter.
as a Tesla owner, let me tell you that their move away from physical buttons and towards embedded touchscreen functions is stupid and I would much rather have physical controls and buttons for basic functions. Don’t fantasise about how great touchscreens are!
It's funny how so much importance is focussed on these infotainment screens and their function when the focus should be on other more important aspects of a car. I realise that a greater amount of the car's important controls are done via these screens but that's where the problems are - they should not be there in the first place!
Have the GT facelift in auto. It’s a great car, often hits 44mpg and is smooth in traffic. Sport mode is an absolute joy if you like something a with a bit more of the lions roar
I picked one of the GT autos up from Bristol docks and then got mired in Bristol's horrific rush hour. I entirely agree - the 3D dials give you a migraine, and the auto box and stop start make it a horror show to drive around town. Quite nice on a fast smooth road or motorway, but like all new cars, dynamically it left me cold.
I first saw this a week or so before i picked up my 3 month old 2008 GT auto. I was a little concerned about the reviewers comment about the gearbox and stop/start, as most of my driving is short journeys around town. What utter rubbish he was talking. The stop/start is seamless, as soon as you come off the brake the engine starts, no delay whatsoever. The gearchange is smooth only noticable in lower gears. As for the instruments, does he not realise this is how we see things in real life, in depth. Does he get headaches just looking around all day! This my 4th 2008, all have been excellent and reliable I'm not too sure if this is the reviewers day job!
I have this model (2008 2023 GT auto), the gear box is perfectly fine for me, but ye, start-stop is borderline dangerous, turn it off! Unfortunately it defaults to on every time you start the car, so it's a bit annoying doing this every time. Other than the start-stop nonsense this is a pretty good car.
Mine is excellent and all the issues this presenter raises seem entirely absent to me. Sometimes feels as though some car media are working hard ro sustain the Peugeot tropes from the past!😂
I reviewed the Peugeot 2008 too and i must say it is more stylish than before and good value for money! However the design seems to be losing the Peugeot charm
I have had two of these, one after the other, an Allure and then a GT Line. Its pefect for me. As other family members use it, we have gone for an auto. Its perfect for me, though I always turn the stop start off before I drive.
I said in my comment the reviewer was talking utter dangly things! I've had my 2008 GT 3 weeks now, most of my driving is short journeys around town. There is absolutely no jerkiness, it's a very nice drive. Having had three manual 2008s prior to this, it's more of a hassle changing gear around town than this auto box.
🔴 Update - Had mine for a few weeks now and the auto gearbox seems fine. The whole car is lovely to drive and looks stunning. The blind spots are quite ‘blind’ due to the window pilar things being quite chunky….and clicking the seatbelt into its clicky bit can be a wrestle if you have shovel hands like me. All in all it’s a damn good vehicle in my humble opinion.
Avoid due to major issues with wet belt degrading. We are awaiting a big bill due to Peugeot unwillingness to pay for the repair even though they know of this very common problem. They’ve already recalled them in other countries apart from uk . Disappointed in Peugeot
I have this very same car in the gt automatic & i do wonder sometimes if these reviewers are paid to say things by the competition because i have not experienced any issues with the gearbox,i couldn't help but say to myself "this guy is talking crap".
Quite a few mechanics show wet belt replacements on youtube. Have a look at a few. I was shocked at the terrible state of them in relatively low mileage engines. As you know, oil and rubber don’t mix, can’t believe someone actually thought this was a good idea.
I had mine done under warranty, so no cost but my car was off the road for 10 weeks and no replacement vehicle was offered. Fortunately I’m retired and we have another vehicle, so not too much of an issue but they should have told me from the outset that there would be no replacement offered. However, my cam belt didn’t fail, the issue is now sorted so I shouldn’t have to replace it again in my ownership. The alert that there was an issue was low oil pressure and my mechanic told me not to drive it until it was sorted and he alerted me to the recall. My recall was dragged out to 10 weeks because of Christmas New Year and the shortage of spares.
Those Puretechs are disasters waiting to happen. Turbo, wet belt and direct fuel injection. I have the 3008 with the EAT8 gearbox and 130bhp Puretech, can confirm it’s jerky in traffic. Mine pulls against the brakes as I slow down, as the car surges with each down change. Feeling the car accelerate under braking is a disconcerting. Anyway, I’m definitely giving my car back at the end of the lease. Not surprised Whatcar gave it 3 stars and the Volvo XC40 5 stars. Hopefully when it’s time to change cars, XC40 deals will have come back. That was a much smoother car, better NVH suppression, smoother ride, engine and gearbox.
Despite all the talk, I haven't heard of many cambelt failures on this engine after,2019, and it's a widely used unit. At some point Peugeot are going back to chain cam anyway
I tried turning off the stop start because of this video, the car / gearbox is much better behaved. The trip counter shows in the past 160miles, the stop start has been on for around 1m 30seconds. Frankly I’d rather burn the fuel than put up with the extra jerkiness for that sort of petrol saving.
@@jdmguy44 I think they are trialling that with the hybrid only for now, if you go for the pure petrol Puretech, its still got a wet belt. TBF, Ford and Honda’s wet belt engines haven’t fared better, it’s literally the worst solution in terms of durability.
@@disarchitectedThat is not what I read online. The revised 1.2 Puretech will be fitted on all facelift 2008 apparently already in use on Vauxhall Mokka's. Incidentally Honda have never used wet cambelts. Only VW (with the 2.0TDi) Ford (ecoboost) and PSA/Stelantis.
Wonder how all the French electrics will stack up. Son had a 2 year old low mileage RCZ and it was a nightmare going into limp mode all the time. Put me off this brand for life.
My 2 RCZ's have no issues with their electrics, and I have owned one of those since new. The electrics on all the other modern Peugeots that I have owned have been trouble free, if you went VW for example, you would have many more issues with the electrics than that of a modern pug. The fact that the biggest issue with older pugs and electrics was mainly down to the wiring loom going into the door, which use to break when they were older as they became brittle, this has been resolved and now they are very reliable. Not sure what issues your son had on his RCZ but those were probably mechanical, lots of problems with the HPFP on the THP engine cars but the electrics are usually very reliable (note the mechanical parts that go faulty on RCZ's are BMW parts, which shows you how reliable German engineering has become).
Pls help, what are your thoughts on a 2008 gt-spec with the 1.2l ‘hybrid’ 136hp with 6speed automatic line up? It’s either this or the ‘newly’ facelifted ford puma 1 litre 7speed automatic in st-line spec. Any advice is helpful!
Had ordered the pre facelift at the start of the year....order was then changed to face lift and then cancelled as apart from the better infotainment the front end is not as good looking imo and they also removed the heated seats and built in nav. Poor show.

Have a pre-facelift GT, 40000 on the odometer. Has been logging a multitude of faults over past 3 months that dealership can't fix. Range is poor but sounds like that has been improved. Can't wait to hand it back in June to be honest.
Agree! We’re running one as a second car. My husband mainly drives it around the city. However he has had to take it on longer trips recently and the range is very poor. Half of what’s claimed. Also, at service the dealership can’t resolve several tech issues. He will keep it for a year, but wants to go back to petrol then.
I recently bought a 2017 Allure model. God I miss my 2000 Toyota Yaris Verso, is all I can say. That car was like a Tardis, the Peugeot? Well on the inside it's akin to a matchbox in comparison! Lots of electrickery but, I think that it's just more stuff to go wrong! Oh and no Sat Nav. Let's not mention the Achilles heel, OK I will. The very expensive cam belt! They break down and clog the oil strainer which in turn starves the engine of oil and BOOM! Time for a new engine, or at least a very expensive repair. 5 to 7 hundred pounds (I've seen quoted on YT) just to change the belt and about 3 to 5 hours to do the job I believe.
Can you quote your sources for Pure Tech cambelt failures after 2019? I'd be genuinely interested because I have a 2020 208. On the other hand if you're just repeating gossip, I'm not interested
Just look on YT for 2008 timing belts like I did. So I'm not "repeating gossip" as you put it. I'm just passing on what I've seen. These are mechanics videos in fully kitted out workshops. But, if you're not interested, good luck with your engine piggy.
Damn sick and tired of expensive SUVs being the norm and advertised the most, creating inflation too whilst abandoning segments for Chinese EVs to take over. Shareholders cant complain as long as profit margins are growing above inflation can reduce profit value... Spoiled autojournalists over the past decade share some blame.
Hi do not buy the eV, range in the real world is shocking, using it as normal we were getting 80 miles range on average. It got returned, now we have a 508sw 2lt diesel, best car we've ever owned. EV biggest miss sold scam in history
car looks nice but a choice of 1.2 puretech or 1.2 puretech , not very exciting , a lot of car dealers dont like buying that engine .... think its trouble sum .......... french cars always loose a lot .............. call me old fashioned but like my steering wheel round ........
Depends, anything based on the Golf Mk8 electrical architecture is seriously dodgy out of the box. Read Whatcars reliability survey for cars upto 5 years old in their latest issue. I chose a Peugeot over any VAG car because all things considered, I thought it would be more reliable for the term of the lease deal.
My son's 2006 Pug 206 1.4 16v sport is still running sweetly and has had no major parts since we bought it seven years ago for £900. It also has no corrosion and a perfect interior. Pugs have been good for a long time, if you pick exactly the right model. Another plus for the 206 is that it is not some stupid SUV. In contracts his other car, a 2002 4.4 V8 BMW saloon, has had plenty of parts, fortunately that is easy to work on and well screwed together.@@disarchitected

Is this a Skoda promotion or a review of Peugeot 2008? I'm confused.
UK motoring press is always sponsored by the Germans.
or an Audi promo...even.
That's correct I've got a 3008 - no trouble with seating position and steering wheel. That's just nonsense.
Very smart. A breath of fresh air when compared to a Kamiq or T-Roc.
Isn't the third engine option available in the UK? The 2008 is also available in an EV version on the continent
Maybe the problem is Tesla?
This my 4th 2008, all have been excellent and reliable
I'm not too sure if this is the reviewers day job!
The 8 speed gearbox is brilliant. And far superior to the old six speed gearbox.
I just turn the stop/start thingy off as part of my starting procedure.
What! Losing it charm or better charm than ever before. What are you talking about 😅
I have had two of these, one after the other, an Allure and then a GT Line. Its pefect for me. As other family members use it, we have gone for an auto. Its perfect for me, though I always turn the stop start off before I drive.
An automatic gear box is always better than manual, unless you want to stir the soup all the time. Btw it's not terrible.
What car makes a video that will be a review of the Toyota Land Cruiser 2.8 D-4D T/A
Been using the auto version of this for lessons and the gearbox works no bother.
Picking up a new gt in black on Tuesday. Hoping you're exaggerating about the auto gearbox being so bad!?
Do you recommend the manual gearbox?
Please bring back Doug!
Terrible view of the road. Slanted windscreen added to chunky mirror means very small viewing window.
What about Renault Capture ? I think it is the same category...
Seeing a lot of talk around puretech engine wet belt issues. Sounds scary 😧
They now have timing chains.
@@jdmguy44 I think the timing chain version is only for the hybrid for now.
@@v88krbcan i ask what country this recall was ? We’re in the uk and Peugeot not interested in helping with our 70 plate 2008.
The 1.2 puretech has now been revised and is chain driven.
Current peugeot models seem ok now. My daughter has the previous version 208, and I have the current 2008 as a daily driver both of us without issues.
Every car reviewed has the question or statement of 'best new ...' or 'tesla beater'
They still haven't fixed the low steering wheel placement? No deal.
Automatic gearbox is great in 2008.
Stop missleading people
Had ordered the pre facelift at the start of the year....order was then changed to face lift and then cancelled as apart from the better infotainment the front end is not as good looking imo and they also removed the heated seats and built in nav. Poor show.
The guy trashed the automatic transmission 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️, which happens to be one of the best automatic transmissions in the world, produced by Aisin, Toyota’s division of automatic transmission development, which makes the most durable and reliable automatic transmissions in the world.
Amazing car full of allure! Bravo Peugeot! Already seen a few on the road already! A attractive reliable car❤
FYI the wheels on that model are the upgraded 18” EVISSA wheels not the standard 17”
So you need to be tall to see the dials but short to fit in the back?🤔🤔🤔🤔
What car Eu gosto do Peugeot 2008 1.5 BlueHDi GT EAT8 com 130CV, mas prefiro muito mais o Nissan Qashqai 1.3 DIG-T N-Connecta Xtronic com 158CV(I like the Peugeot 2008 1.5 BlueHDi GT EAT8 with 130hp, but I much prefer the Nissan Qashqai 1.3 DIG-T N-Connecta Xtronic with 158hp)
Lovely car , looks very nice 👌
What is happening with europian cars ,engine choise is horrible for the price.
I test drived New 408 with "biggest engine" 1.2 130 HP and even i very like the look off the car i also tested Chines Cheery Tiggo 8 Pro which is same price in my countru (Serbia) .
Cheery felt like 3 class above becase engine is much stronger and gear change so much better
I do not like the the update at all!!!! The previous one is better looking in my eyes!
He will keep it for a year, but wants to go back to petrol then.
when you say 2008 is this car name invented in was just release way back 2008?
For God's sake please stop with comments about iCockpit and learn to set the driving position correctly!
5’9” is bang on 50th percentile for height, it isn’t short.
All I get from this video is "step up to allure or gt"
They now have timing chains.
Good to know but it doesn't help me with my 2017 model.
Just look on YT for 2008 timing belts like I did. So I'm not "repeating gossip" as you put it. I'm just passing on what I've seen. These are mechanics videos in fully kitted out workshops. But, if you're not interested, good luck with your engine piggy.
Well I had a test drive of the new Puma & it was like driving a small tank , didn’t like it at all
Damn sick and tired of expensive SUVs being the norm and advertised the most, creating inflation too whilst abandoning segments for Chinese EVs to take over. Shareholders cant complain as long as profit margins are growing above inflation can reduce profit value...
Spoiled autojournalists over the past decade share some blame.
You quoted Richard who sued the NHS fantastic for a motor vehicle UA-cam video 😂
Hi do not buy the eV, range in the real world is shocking, using it as normal we were getting 80 miles range on average. It got returned, now we have a 508sw 2lt diesel, best car we've ever owned. EV biggest miss sold scam in history
At bhp of 129 it's faster than my focus st

Reliability is shocking after 3 years, you would not get that problem with Skoda and VW
