      The BTL-S3 Y-wing gets an undeserved bad rep, really. It does a fair number of jobs well -- escort fighter, reconnaissance, hyperspace courier, light trans-atmospheric bomber. Their shields and durable construction will keep a novice pilot alive a lot longer than a Cloakshape, Z-95 or just about any TIE.
      The problem comes when Y-wings are put into a fighting-hound space superiority role, especially when novice pilots are against ace TIEs, such as the Lord Darth Vader or Baron Fel's 181st Fighter Group. At which point we get the kernel of truth to the stereotype of Y-wings as sleepy Hutts made of nergon-14....

  • @michaelramon2411
    @michaelramon2411 5 років тому +455

    This is slightly different, but Legends Star Wars had a mixed-fighter technique called the "A-wing slash". Basically, you'd send in a flight of X-wings with another set of A-wings behind them, slowed down to the X-wings' speed. Thus, the whole group looks like X-wings to the enemy scanners. When the enemy gets close to the group, the X-wings split and the A-wings rush forwards, either striking the surprised enemy or rushing past them to hit a higher-priority target (like an Interdictor) while the X-wings strike the enemy fighters from both sides.
    I wonder if something similar could be done with A-wings and Y-wings, using the Y-wings as seemingly un-escorted bait?

      This is an old ninja tactic to surprise an enemy (but only works if there is only one enemy, or a small group clumped together). One example is a ninja dressing up as a woman, in a big dress holding a fan. There would be ninja crouching behind him, keeping their profile smaller than that of the dress and fan. When they were close enough, those in back would rush forward and dispatch the guard(s) before they could sound the alarm. This woudln't work with a sentry tower or multiple guards spread out.
      I could see this working on a single capital ship/starbase (depending on the sophistication of their sensors), but even a small flotilla should be able to pick up the extra engines, and tell there is a difference, and possibly what that difference is.
      As for baiting a trap, I like where your head is at, but I'd personally go with a small group of corvettes or freighters (less suspicious imo). Having them in a tight formation so the unpowered A-Wings mag-clamped to the bellies can't be detected until the TIEs have committed to the fight. Probably work best against pirates, but a good commander could make it work against Imps. Have some bombers micro jump in once the A-Wings have launched? Force the Imps to abandon their fighters/transports, or risk losing a cap ship.

      Y-wings aren't bad ships, its just that technology has moved on they're obsolescing.
      Y-wings were developed near the end of clone wars, where they were extremely effective as heavily armored bombers which could more or less ignore standard vulture droids, get their munitions off and return to base. They weren't the fastest at the time, but did their job well.
      Decades later, the rebellion gets their hands on some, but since tech has moved on they're too slow and not well enough armored anymore to be fill their main role. As a result, they strip all the armor off and tune up the shields to let them a speed boost, but the maneuverability still isn't there. It's not like the alliance has the pick of the best gear, they have to make due with what they have, and Imo they did really well with the aging workhorses.

      @Riceball01 5 років тому +34

      Yup, you have to order a whole bunch of different parts and you have the possibility of getting too many parts for one fighter and not enough for another. It also means a lot more extra personnel to work on the different fighter types. You'll need a full compliment of maintainers for each ship type with little to no overlap, this means that if one ship type requires a lot more maintenance than the others, that crew is going to be working a lot more than the others, unless you decided to double the number of people assigned to the high maintenance ship(s) to ease their workload.

      To clarify, I was speaking on a squadron level. I do believe that a good air/space force has a mix of specialized strikecraft and a number of general strikecraft. For example: the Alliance to Restore the Republic uses Z-95s/X-Wings as general fighters, Y-Wings/B-Wings as torpedo bombers, and T-Wings/A-Wings as interceptors. The U-Wing is a gunship, not a fighter, and should not even to try to dogfight.

  • @briancox2721
    @briancox2721 5 років тому +177

    Though I don't think its ever been done like this is Star Wars, this setup could be intriguing: The U-wing has had its troop bay replaced with a small maintenance bay, carries stores, munitions, and fuel, and has been modified to act as an FTL carrier for the A-wing. The A-wing has been stripped of its FTL drive, which has been replaced with a bulked up shield generator. The Y-wing has been heavily modified, removing most of its weapons and replacing them with command, control, communication, and electronic warfare sensors, transmitters, and computers. The B and X wings remain relatively the same, though some weapons may change so they can share munitions. The whole group is a rag tag privateer organization specializing in convoy and VIP escort through low to medium threat environments. When on duty or attacked, the U and Y wings stay with the client, providing logistical, intelligence, and electronic warfare support. The A-wing is now durable and fast enough to act as a rabbit or decoy, ranging far from the client at high speed to distract, herd, and harass enemy ships. The X-wing (which will still be flown by the squad leader for drama sake when the commander should stay in the U or Y wing) and B-Wing are probably close enough in performance to form a useful flight element. They operate in tandem as a space superiority / anti-ship force responsible for dealing the majority of the damage while the A-wing provides occasional cover. Given its Star Wars, you could probably MacGuffin that together enough to tell some entertaining stories.

    Well though it was never stated and this is speculation on my part, Poe’s squadron having an A-wing could make strategic sense if it were used for a mop-up strategy. Have the X-wings engage the enemy, then have the A-wing outmaneuver the occupied enemy, taking them down, freeing up that group of X-wings to find new targets and the A-wing moves onto the next group. This strategy would be better if there were a couple more A-wings to cover each other, but what can you do.

    Logistics is also a factor - by keeping to one type of fighter in a squadron, you simplify logistics as you will only require spares/armaments/fuel/ground crew for that particular fighter type, making supplying that squadron easier & reducing their down time. If you look at current air forces, they all fly single aircraft type squadrons for those very reasons.

For instance if someone came out with a craft that could jam the sensors of the other guys, it would make sense to have one or two of them with every bomber squadron, but it would also make sense to have them under that squadron's command.

You get a cohesive can of beans, but there's that one piece of pork in there that's so much better than the beans around it that the beans suffer because they aren't allowed to shine on their own, but the beans also bring down the pork because the pork doesn't get its own sauce, it's stuck in the beans' sauce. You don't put the pork in the beans. You keep the pork separate so the beans can shine without holding back the pork, and the pork is allowed to do its own thing.

    I'm glad you touched on the logistics of this. Military history is one of my main interests and the more you start to learn about military campaigns and how armies work etc the more you realize that what weapons a person has are often not that important. The organization, leadership, training, communications, and logistics are generally speaking much more important. There is a really good Tom Clancy book called Red Storm Rising where one of the main PoV characters is a Soviet general who is 2nd in command of a Soviet attack against NATO and at one point he berates himself in the heat of battle for thinking about the tactics of the situation. He says something like, "Pavel you idiot, the tactics don't matter. The Leine River Bridges are all that counts. Amateurs think of tactics and strategy and professionals handle the logistics." There is another similar thing that I really like from the movie The Battle of the Bulge. That movie gets panned pretty hard for not being historical, which is fine. The film makers said they were more aiming at the essence of the thing rather than the details. A big plot point of that movie is that the German commander only has enough fuel for 50 hours of full operational tempo, so in 50 hours or less he needs to capture a huge American fuel depot to keep up his attack. At one point, the attack is going well but too slowly and resistance is increasing. The German commander has one of his officers in his HQ with him. He pulls out a flat, black disc and asks if the officer knows what it is. The subordinate officer looks at the label and tells the General that it appears to be a chocolate cake. The German commander basically says, "Yes. This is a chocolate cake. The Americans shipped it to Europe for their troops as a holiday treat. This cake was made in Boston and the Americans have so much logistical power that they can supply nearly the entire Allied effort and still have left over capacity to ship holiday chocolate cakes from Boston to Bastogne and here I am relying on stolen fuel to continue this attack. We're screwed."

You'll never win a dogfight in a Y-wing and given the empire's philosophy is to outnumber you, it's almost always a terrible idea to fly a ship that can't win dogfights. The Army and Air Force (originally the Army Air Corps) used to organize their fighter squadrons in groups of 24 craft. When the naval aircraft carrier was developed the number of planes needed were essentially limited by the number of carriers, but there was also a need to have planes of different types more suited for specific roles, namely air-intercept fighters and heavier torpedo bombers. The Navy and Marine Corp would organize their squadrons into groups of 12 craft in order to more easily redeploy units between carriers and naval air bases. Most Sci-Fiction series set in space make parallels between the organization of a historical seafaring naval fleet and that of a futuristic space fleet, so a squadron of starfighters would typically be organized into groups of 12 craft.
      Technically, a group of 5 craft would be considered a "Flight" not a "Squadron" and made up of 2 "Elements" with one element consisting of 2 craft and the other element consisting of the remaining 3 craft.
      Still, the term "squadron" could be applied to groups of less (or more) than 12 craft depending on the type of craft and the situation. During wartime aircraft losses can operationally create under-strength squadrons (less than 12 craft) and over-strength squadrons (more than 12 craft, but usually less than 18) until replacement craft and pilots can be reassigned to the command. Years ago on my carrier we had a "Squadron" of 8 Lockheed S-3 Vikings and a squadron of A-6 Intruders, though 2 of the 12 were fueling and EW variants, so it was kind of a 10-plane "bomber squadron" rather than an actual full (12-plane) bomber squadron. We also had 2 full squadrons (12 fighters each) of F-18 Hornets and a full squadron of 12 F-14 Tomcats.

      Now days you joint theater commanders but commanders on that level which are Generals or Colonel 06 need to go to year long school before being assigned so that they understand bomber missions and air mobility squadrons missions as well as drones.

    The mixed squadron thing could be made to work. They'd need a few things though: (1) Squadrons in Star Wars are typically made of 12 pilots, so the makeup would have to double, i.e: 2 A-Wings; 2 B-Wings; 2 Y-Wings; 2 U-Wings; and 4 X-Wings. Everybody has a matched wingmate, so they only have to depend on their wingmate during combat. (2) Make it some kind of covert operations squadron like Wraith Squadron, where they don't do front line combat, but instead perform specialized missions; The A-Wings for pursuit and softening up of fast targets, U-Wings deliver troops, B-Wings and Y-Wings soften up bigger targets, X-Wings handle TIE Fighters and escort of the rest of the squadron. An example would be the capture of a small Imperial frigate. The A-Wings zoom in and use their speed and maneuverablility to slow it down. The Y-Wings and B-Wings use ion cannons to bring down the shields and disable it. Then U-Wings deliver troops to board and capture it. Meanwhile the 4 X-Wings are dealing with any TIEs it tried to launch. As for any light speed needs; base them on a modified cargo ship that transports them where they need to go, plus can act as a tug in case the Y- and B- Wings got too carried away in disabling the frigate. And I kinda like the "Aurabesh Squadron" suggestion.

    • @thomasmchugh1989
      @thomasmchugh1989 5 років тому +7

      Agreed, posted a similar comment! I think there's a way to do this imagining matched units, smaller than squadron sized, working together. Your "squadron" is really just a miniature air-wing - but it lets you have a team with extraordinarily diverse mission profiles crammed into a smaller, portable, independent unit!

    • @Riceball01
      @Riceball01 5 років тому +3

      The problem with that is you wind up with a very weak squadron that can't do things nearly as well as squadrons with just 1 type of craft. It severly limits what missions they can do, this kind of mixed composition would only be good for small covert missions like ones where you need to insert a small number of commandoes or something like that. They'd be useless for regular combat missions for all of the reasons stated in the video.

      lancer737 If jamming is necessary they can always detach some A-Wings from the A-Wing squadron and attach them to the X-Wing squadron for the mission. This is what the modern military does, if a mission requires specialized aircraft they are detached from their squadron and attached to the main squadron and then return to their parent squadron when done. Or, more commonly, they are simply assigned to the mission as needed in the numbers as needed. This allows for greater flexibility in being able to assign specialized aircraft to where ever needed and not have them tied up to squadrons that might not need them. By assigning these extra types of craft means that if the squadron goes on a mission like a CAP mission, then your Y & U wings are useless and A-Wings only marginally useful and now your squadron is undersized. Of if you need to intercept incoming enemy craft, well you can forget the U & Y wings and the X-Wings will lag behind meaning that the A-Wing is out there by itself trying to intercept who knows how many TIEs because none of it's squadron mates can keep up.

    • @absalomdraconis
      @absalomdraconis 5 років тому +5

      I think that some of you guys are working on the wrong scale. This kind of mixed group only makes sense for small ops against somewhat isolated groups, so that's likely what the group does. You might send them against an isolated relay station, or to harass or destroy an Arquitens, but you'd never send this group to attack an Imp-star, regardless of variant.
      As for single-type squadrons, it's a nice sentiment, but the Rebellion wasn't always _able_ to achieve those professional levels of acquisitions. If you need three times as many of a particular ship as you have, then something's going to have to make way, and sometimes ghat means that you imitate a battlegroup within a squadron.

Tactics (and uniform compliment) win engagements, but it´s always logistics that win or lose wars. Just my two cents.

      They would have a bigger turning radius because they are heavier and a much more sluggish acceleration. Though their roll would actually be superior because they have far more mass closer to center.
      Also in lore their heavy armor, shields and the fact that their cannons can obliterate any fighter in one shot makes them no joke especially against the somewhat lightly armed TIE fighter.
      Also the quote is subjective as well. I think most pilots would prefer shooting at targets rather than getting shot at even if they can take it. A Y-wing though would mean being more cautious since you can't take too much fire and if you get trapped you can't so easily just blast out of it. In addition to that while the armor and shields help in dogfights big AA guns will go right through. The heavy armor and shields might make a pilot complacent and if a Y-wing get's trapped by several fighters or flies into a killzone of several AA batteries it will get obliterated just as easily as an A-wing would.

      Or, Poe’s squadron having an A-wing could make strategic sense if it were used for a mop-up strategy. Have the X-wings engage the enemy, then have the A-wing outmaneuver the occupied enemy, taking them down, freeing up that group of X-wings to find new targets and the A-wing moves onto the next group. While its guns aren’t as powerful, it can still rush up an enemy’s ass if said enemy is focused on engaging the X-wing in front of it. This strategy would be better if there were a couple more A-wings to cover each other, but what can you do.

    Mixed Fighter Squadron works great in Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures game, which is a good space dogfight simulation. It has a a such thing as a player, which rules the whole squadron without any stress of piloting a ship, avoiding enemy fire and firing own weapons, but still pretty good.
    That X-Wing squadron with a single A-Wing can keep A-Wing in formation, and after the first engagement, A-Wing becomes a nimble guy, who apperas here and there, while other slower fighters keep formation. Or it becomes a hit-and-run flanker. The U-Wing might be an ECM-ship, which stays behind, trying to stay alive, jamming enemy sensors. Y-Wing might be a mine deploying ship for ambushes, also, it has a turret, which doesn't require to keep enemy in front arc. Just some thoughts about mixed squads, and how they can make sense

      This is true, but the game is different from real-life since the fighter combat in Star Wars was based on the dog-fights of WWII. If your nimble, fast fighter is isloated from his buddies he has no one to cover for him, that is why fighters typically fly in formations with a minimum of two to cover for each other. Its even true in the game where its best to have your ships covering each other to try and deter your opponent from using reckless maneuvers to get the drop on your ships.

    Different training is the biggest factor. Ask the veterans of the AVG with P40s about when the teamed up with the British with Brewster Buffalo's at Rangoon. The AVG was trained to use boom & zoom tactics where the British were not and the AVG had few losses compared to the British who were not. Both planes performed extremely well in the B & Z role.

    Maybe instead of one story about a squadron of mixed fighters, it will be a collection of short stories that are each focused on pilots of the different fighters? I think it might be cool to see the different individual perspectives of the pilots and how they operate their ships.

    What I heard: Mixed squadrons is a bad idea but I'm sure the writers will have good plot armour.

    The only way how this squadron could be both aptly named regarding your comments and according to its title is if all of its pilots were trained for, at the very minimum, five fighter craft but only flew one type per mission. Personally saying that would be an awful lot like the original Rogue Squadron game where they fly a different ship in accordance of each of the missions’ parameters.

    I actually love flying mixed squadrons in Xwing tmg. You have to pick a shared speed and banking maneuver for the initial formation but once you get in range everyone breaks off and does their own thing. The fighters and gunships knife fight while the Awing zips back and forth jousting and turreted ships fly in circles taking potshots. It can create a sense of chaos for your enemy making it hard to predict your movements. You just have to consider every ship individually in relation to the larger battle. If a Turreted ship gets chased the fighter or interceptor can get free shots up the back of the chaser. If a fighter gets out maneuvered the turreted ship can apply pressure or the a-wing can boost in and lend a hand.
    It's also a lot of fun.

    Devil's advocate!
    What if you had a squadron composed of sub-units. 10-12 total fighters and 4 are X-wings, 3 are B-wings, 3 are A-wings and 2 are EITHER U-Wings or Y-Wings or B-wings depending on mission profile
    Thinking in the context Wraith squadron, Kyp's Dozen, SW Rebels and the idea of small independent teams capable of multi-role actions.
    You could have a squadron like this behave LIKE a larger normal air wing composed of full squadrons - but be able to operate independent of the main fleet and towards specific objectives and missions. Don't think of it as a smattering of random vehicles, think of it as a miniaturized fleet fighter wing
    You could imagine interesting tactics that have the X-wings provide cover/draw fire for specific maneuvers that suddenly bring enemy fighters into a barrage of B-wing fire. OR that a unit of a-wings could perform advanced reconnaissance for specific target data ahead of your heavier units coming in.
    I completely agree that halfheartedly or ham-fistedly assembling a hodgepodge of units is a stupid approach. And certainly even THIS approach requires advanced training and coordination and a logistical headache for support units.
    BUT...
    isn't it very much in the spirit of Wraith Squadron and the Ghost (SW Rebels) team and the idea of these simi-autonomous multi-mission teams the Rebellion was so fond of?

      Thing is, you likely could have a mixed unit squadron and have single unit wings, since IRL anyway, a squadron is composed of multiple wings and operate it as a special mixed unit strike force.

    So in short, Y-wings are like WWII bombers.

      WW2 light or medium bombers, yes.
      Probably not awful for CAS operation

      They're the Jugs of Star Wars; *can* they fight? Yes, absolutely, but they're not dogfighters or turnfighters. They're heavy, slow at altitude, but Jugs at least used their weight and profile for unparalleled top speeds, allowing Boom n' Zoom attack profiles. Y-Wings, being in space, don't have that, and so are relegated to the Jug's other purpose, which was Close Air Support. But the thing with that is, they only did CAS work after air superiority had been established. There isn't a space battle in Star Wars where that rings true (because that wouldn't really be interesting storytelling).

    It's not just ordnance that would be a logistical nightmare, the amount of tools and parts you'd have to assemble just for basic maintenance would be ridiculous, let alone repairing any major battle damage. If it's anything like the situation with our tech personnel would be a huge issue as well, most aircraft maintenance techs don't just work on any old plane, but rather a specific type as they each(type) have specific requirements, possibly less true for avionics techs, but airframes and powerplants would need a different set of techs for each type of bird.
    Mixed units might possibly make sense for a specific short term mission, but as an organizational tool they make no sense whatsoever.

    The Star Wars X-Wing series of novels remains one of my favorite series of books to this day (up until Solo Command, the ones after that are...weird).
    An Ewok that can pilot, practical jokes from veterans like Wedge and Janson on Newbies, and a whole massive Stealth/Commando mission where they pretend to be part of an Empire Admiral's battlegroup in order to track down an Imperial Warlord's supply infrastructure. The novelization of Conquering/Liberating Coruscant, the beginnings of a huge poison-pill plot plague that actually made losing Coruscant a short-term WIN For the Empire...
    Good stuff. Highly recommend.
