This man is a legend in South Carolina from Woodruff (Spartanburg County) i was 10 in 88 i remember he came to our Elementary School and spoke after winning the Title we couldnt believe it was actually him a day ill never forget that day even though im an FSU FAN😂😂
As a Notre Dame fan, I remember Lou Holtz had some seriously STACKED teams in the late 80's- early 90's. There weren't many teams that had more talent under one coach.
When I first started watching this clip I said to myself....Now I know that I remember him actually throwing some passes. He went undreafted...I never understood that..He could have atleast went in the second round as a wideout/kick returner, hell, the man won a National Championship.
Lou Holtz said “he’s only a good passer when it matters”. Tony rice was absolute clutch he always made his critics look like fools. On the field and off of the field.
Yeah shame he never got a shot in The NFL. He was a winner. He may not of had the attempts or stats because of ND's scheme but he diced up some great defenses including Miami. Egregious he never got drafted
Quinn had unbelievable confidence in his offense. You can tell by their success on 4th down. Rice did have receivers - a young Ismail, Johnson, a fantastic TE in Derek Brown and several runners - Green and Banks. Quinn was a huge leader esp. his senior year ala the UCLA comeback. I'm not knocking Rice (I worship him!) but I think to compare one by lessening the other is silly. They also played a decade+ apart after the game has changed. Rice had a great D to back him - Quinn did not
During this time in the NFL, it was rare for a Black Quarterback out of college play in the NFL and many times they were put into the runningback and/or widereceiver positions no matter how efficent that Black quarterback was. Here is a man who was damn good and he was not giving an opportunity to play in the big leagues. He was forced to play in the CFL and play for The Barcelona Dragons. How humiliating was that for him, a man who helped a team win its 1st National Championship in 11 years?
Well said wholly but..... Dowis played for Air Force! The best place that he could take a team was to the Holiday Bowl. The fact that we are talking about a great option Qb from 20 years ago who never had a season better than 9-3/8-4 only proves how special he was at running the option. I still say Frazier was the greatest, Rice #2, Holloway #3, and all the navy qbs from the last 15 yrs at #4, then Dowis/Crouch at #5.
ND's "Three Amigos"--Stams, Pritchett and Stonebreaker: "The person who was glue, the person who really put it all together, was Barry Alvarez," says Stams of the '88 Irish defensive coordinator, now the very successful head coach at Wisconsin. "Our personalities fit very well with Barry's," elaborates Pritchett. "He believed that you had to keep the guys loose." Does that sound like ND Defensive Coordinator in recent memory to you? And you wonder why ND's D dropped off after BA left?
Dude, no joke. Damn, that would’ve been fun to watch. (It would help if Ricky watters was his flanker. 😂). That team was stacked both sides of the ball. Extremely underrated. They beat the teams that finished 2, 4, 5, 8, 13 and 19 that year.
@Mklhorvath Trust me, the reason why Rice did not get a shot in the NFL wasn't because his team had a couple poor games against good teams in college. dan marino's team only scored one field goal in his final college game. john elway never even made a bowl game, i believe. there are many late round picks who succeed as pros who didn't have the college career rice had. the reason why rice never made it as a pro is that a) he was a black qb, b) he was an option qb, c) he had a terrible arm.
Agree with everything but the terrible arm. There is more than enough highlights of him making 50+ yard throws and intermediate accurately. There are plenty QBs that went pro with inferior arm talent
tony is a good man and a great player.i use to live next door to him in Mishawaka Indiana and he use to cut mine and brothers hair and i think my hair is still fucked up 20 years later. Then again a black man is not use to cutting straight blonde hair lol. We had alot of fun back then. really never knew how good of quarterback he was till a few years ago
Funny how the NFL's all converted to that style of football now Tony Rice was one of the forefathers of doing that back then in the last of a kind McDougal was the next Notre Dame don't get it you need to have for the quarterback that can do things NBA game changing until they get that guy back then I went and
Let's not get carried away. Rice played with an incredible defense - ND had Stonebreaker, Zorish, Stams, and an incredicle secondary on that team. Brady Quinn didn't lose any bowl games - the offense performed in those losses. He plays qb not db. ND has not had a good (or great) D in awhile. Your critique is unfair. Rice was awesome though!
Quinn would have won a national title if he had played on the 1988 team. Rice, if he had played on the 2005 - 06 teams would not have. I enjoyed the "quiet" year that Kevin McDougal had in 1993!
That reply is all over the place. leadership often has NOTHING to do with your ability, so trying to compare their ability to pass makes Rice look much less capable a QB, which he was not, but leadership cannot be measured by any real statistic. Still, why does Rice need the confidence of the ND defense? He never played defense. I think that both defenses realized that if they gave their QB a chance, they could win (look at USC 05, UCLA 06). Still ND rarely trailed in many big games w/ Rice

The man was a star. I saw it with my own two eyes.
Tony Rice was poised , the man was a dangerous QB ..
My all-time favorite player. Best montage since Team America. Thanks.
I swear
As a Notre Dame fan, I remember Lou Holtz had some seriously STACKED teams in the late 80's- early 90's. There weren't many teams that had more talent under one coach.
Probably the best running QB ever
Tony Rice great player , a winner, great competitor, bigger the game the better he played, played the game with a smile on his face
I loved Tony Rice! BRING BACK THE OPTION!!!!!!
I swear
Good old days of college football
When I first started watching this clip I said to myself....Now I know that I remember him actually throwing some passes. He went undreafted...I never understood that..He could have atleast went in the second round as a wideout/kick returner, hell, the man won a National Championship.

Yeah, tell that to Warren Moon, who worked his way through the CFL to eventually become arguably the best black quarterback ever.
great stuff!
Greatest option QB ever
Rice and Holtz - a perfect marriage!
This is incredible, but there is a but.... you forgot tony rice's pass from the endzone to the rocket in the usc game in the 1st quarter.
At least under Rice they won a National Championship, with Quinn they were blown out....twice
They don't get it. The system pro style shit don't work for the they need more of what Rice brought in today's game along with the running attack
Great QB
Tony your legs are a blur of speed!!

I agree, totally.
YES SIR
Tony executed the first jump pass, but don't get credit for it.
Riley Leonard brought me here. Go ☘️

The Lamar Jackson of the late 80's

I wish Allen Iverson could’ve ran this offense, he would’ve been LETHAL

I agree, nowadays Rice would have a legit shot to play QB in the NFL and would probably have a lengthy career.
Dude, dowis was one of the greatest option qbs ive ever seen. Im partial to rice but objectively, frazier was the greatest. dont knock dee

he made a lot of would-be pro linebackers are d-backs look silly with his wishbone reads
Tony Rice was tougher than leather
Who did Dowls play for and when?

How did the best offense in ND history NOT have confidence in Quinn?? Are you insane?
Chaka Watson look like him
hell no i can name 10 QBs better.
So he was a running back?
No he was a quarterback who ran the option very well
Quinn would have won a national title if he had played on the 1988 team. Rice, if he had played on the 2005 - 06 teams would not have. I enjoyed the "quiet" year that Kevin McDougal had in 1993!

he was slow... but quick. you can be quick but not fast. definitely should've gotten a shot in the pros
Don't forget about Randall Cunningham you clowns
He didn't run tha option tho
