In the original version of this scene, Shane was supposed to insult Rick to the point of Rick stabbing Shane, then Shane would turn into a walker, Rick would grab Shane’s gun and try to shoot him, only to realize that he never had any bullets, meaning Shane had no intention of killing Rick, he just wanted Rick to step up and do what was necessary

Jon Berthal is a genius. Him and Andrew Lincoln had auditioned for the main characters and the producers couldn’t decide who should play Rick and who should play Shane but Jon made it easy by asking to play Shane knowing well that Shane was going to die early into the show. He did this because he knew this show was going to go on for a while so this was a one in a lifetime opportunity to make it big and get opportunities elsewhere.

The way this is filmed is just perfect. It honestly is. Both of them surrounded by the dark, bloodied and battered out in an open field. Nothing out there except them.
Shane with his gun trained on Rick. Rick holding his gun out in a passive gesture. Shane grabs onto the gun and the viewer thinks maybe there is still a chance for them to make amends, only for them to realize it was a trick. Rick stabs Shane. A single gunshot rings out. Rick is metaphorically replacing Shane as the one who will kill to protect his family. He absorbed that mentality moving forward. This moment changed Rick more than any other.

The actor that played Shane wanted his gun to be empty in the scene. He felt like it would have been a better point for Shane to pressure Rick into killing him because he knew Rick needed to become that man in this new world in order to protect his family but he never intended to want to kill Rick. In the comics it’s totally different
Rick is willing to die to try and convince Shane he never actually kills him
Carl comes along and sees what’s happening and kills Shane Rick grabs Shane’s gun and racks the slide but realizes
There was never a bullet in the chamber
    The gun was empty
Shane was trying to push Rick to do whatever it took to survive to protect his family
    Even kill his best friend
At least I think so I haven’t read the comics in ages and Jon Bernthal even stated he wanted this scene to play out like that instead of the final product
This is even shown later on in Ricks last episode when he has that talk with Shane in the squad car
“I’m sorry for what happened…for what I did to you…”
“Man you gotta let shit go….you gotta move on from that….right now you gotta fight! Where’s that animal I want you to dig deep and find him and fight! Rick!

This moment is so much better in the comic in my opinion. Rick was never going to kill Shane. Up until the moment Carl killed Shane, Rick never planned on killing Shane and would've died if Shane really willed it. It's such a big character choice for this to be a planned betrayal rather than a final attempt to save his friend. Its a big difference between comic Rick and show Rick.

    • @TheOfficialBrother
      @TheOfficialBrother Рік тому +24

@@Cichyhub it's a big decision as a human being to decide and kill your best friend for any reason. In the show, he's ruthless. Knows what he needs to do and does it. He's a killer. At this point in the comic, he's unsure of what the world is becoming and what he needs to be in order to survive in it. He wanted more than anything for his friend to turn back to him, and was willing to die for it. He was willing to die for the hope that everyone could still be decent. Shane would have killed him if Carl hadnt stepped in and saved Rick... And that's when Rick learns he needs to be more to protect the ones he loves. My best friend ended up f****** me while i was asleep... My best bro. I chose to forget it because of my depression and loneliness. Not even a month later i walked in on my OWN brother riding my best friends 🐓 the way i did. What broke my heart is that i couldn't figure out what hurt me most... My best friend commiting a sin like that... Or... The fact that my brother made that 🐓 do things i couldn't

We needed Shane too. It s a shame the only person he taught before he died was andrea, and she became a badass for like a season.
Also Shane and Rick dou would’ve shat in negans mouth. The governor would’ve been too scared to try anything and would’ve befriended Shane’s group at the prison. They needed Woodbury in the long run, the people they encountered after the governor were so much more savage. They could’ve been one of the Allied groups in the end.
