I need to prune my 3 bloodgood Japanese maples, they are not that tall, maybe 6 ft, and getting a little leggy, they were planted 2 years ago and have never been pruned. I'm scared to do it, I don't want to mess them up or kill them.
I have to say that I don't necessarily agree with using those type of pruners or dressing the cut wounds. From my education and practice, I've found that dressing wounds seals in moisture and doesn't allow the cut to properly heal on it's own. I always prefer to use bypass pruners because it makes a cleaner cut and leaves less room for bacteria and fungi to attack. Felco pruners are the staple for horticulture professionals. With that said, everybody has their own way of gardening. My background, I have a degree in horticulture, have my own practice, and also have worked at some of the top independent nurseries in my area.

Would be a better video visually if the background was a plain wall or some-such. It's hard to see the thin branches against such a busy backdrop.
