    Thank you so much for this video! My poor baby Fiona had an abscess that was just about as big it showed up so fast! I know it’s not recommended to do these things at home but I was afraid my piggy might die, she stopped eating and was clearly in pain. I followed what you did as closely as possible and OH BOY, what a stinky gushy 🤮 so gross lol within an hour she was running around drinking water eating on her own! I had been feeding her with a syringe. It’s only been a few days and I did have to drain a little bit more out today but she is back to herself! Eating hay, drinking water, she has crunchy food but I’ve also been softening some, which she seems to like more but she still does go for the crunchy sometimes. Her poops are almost normal again, still a little soft but so much better! I can’t thank you enough for this video! Honestly I was so scared to lance her neck but watching you gave me the confidence to do it and I’m pretty sure it saved my piggies life 😊 Fiona and I both greatly appreciate what you do ❤

    For future reference, you can suppliment with wheat bran and swede ( rutabagas) which helps put on weight and build the body back up.

    • @GuineaPigStuff
      @GuineaPigStuff  4 місяці тому +1

      Swede can be really hard to obtain here and is not commonly available where corn usually is. The other issue is if they have never had it in their life and are underweight you want to stay with things you know to be safe for them so trying something like swede you would have to introduce.

    Hello Lyn! I’ve always known how nurses know the patients better than the doctors, do all the nurturing and care for them, unlike the doctors who just pop n and out to see how well the nurses r making the doctors get the big bucks, sounds like vets r the same as doctors, they want ur money just to tell u what’s wrong with them, with people, they turn them over to the nurses to heal, continuing for the doctors to get the big bucks, same with the vet, they cut off the dead skin flap, and that’s it, let someone else heal the piggy. I bet u could have done exactly what they did, it’s sad that just because u don’t have the degree that they have u have to send ur parents to the vet. U did an awesome job on healing her!!!

    I just have a quick questions I didn’t plan on getting my little piggies but they were giving them away because a renter left them behind no food no water I really had to clean them and really watch them over the next two weeks one passed away that night I held her for two hours give her water with a dropper. But the other 4 made it thank goodness. But I was wondering what caused cinnamon abscess I want to make sure I get the information I can I don’t have much money but I do raise a garden which helps so much. Because the other day I got a bigger surprise 5 new babies. They cute but imagine my surprise they are already eating food. But I divided the girls and boys so far so good. I really hope I have no more surprises. Thank goodness my man is a carpenter haha

      Well done Karen on rescuing them. It sounds like the one you lost was heavily compromised. Abscesses are due to infection. So when in the jaw could be due to infected roots of teeth, food caught in the gums, impact from outside like a bite etc. These videos are all intended to help you, so thank you for watching and glad you are learning lots.

      Cavy Central Guinea Pig Rescue with Lyn It really breaks my heart to see any animal left behind or knowing they are being abused. I don’t think people should get an animal with out getting the information they need to take care of them. They are soo cute but they need weekly baths brushing their teeth and hair clippings nails and shots just like a child. But anyway how old do you take your babies piggies from mom and do they breed with there siblings

    • @silversiren7046
      @silversiren7046 4 роки тому

      @@karendunn3590 they will definitely breed with their siblings. This happened to my friend and he ended up with 47 piggies after starting with two due to misidentified genders. The best thing would be to ask your nearest vet what age they can sterilise them at and have all of your piggies doctored to prevent any more unwanted babies if you intend to keep all of them. It isn't worth the risk. The first time his piggies bred was a mis-id from himself and the store and the second time was actually the vet. They had dad sterilised and were told they'd had all girl babies...but one was a boy! Disaster. I think weaning for guinea pigs is between 2-3 weeks of age and they can breed from 2-3 months old or sometimes earlier. Saskia from LA guinea pig rescue would probably know! Check out her channel. She often answers questions during livestreams.

    Hi thank you such a marvelous job!
    A saline bath? Do you just add a certain amount of salt to the water?
    What did you use to clean her ears?
    Thanks!

    • @GuineaPigStuff
      @GuineaPigStuff  4 роки тому +3

      Yes she had been rushed in as she torn the area open with her nail. Saline in this instance as she needed cleaning all over. Then you can more localised treat the areas. Still saline on the ears. Piggies when they clean their face will clean their ears and rub muck on there. So she needed it all removing initially.

    • @amandah2866
      @amandah2866 4 роки тому +2

      To make body neutral saline (the same concentration that is given intravenously in hospital) you mix 1/4 teaspoon of non-iodised sea salt with 250ml of water. At this concentration, it doesn't sting an open wound or eyes. Warm the solution to help draw out pus and infection.
      I've used this on myself when healing piercings, to flush wounds, when healing my infected ingrown toenail and to flush my irritated eyes (which is why I know it doesn't sting). I've also used it on my guinea pigs and the dogs when they've had wounds.

      Hi Uday typically with an abscess they don't need an anti biotic but in this instance it was required. Baytril was used ( enrotril) however this really depends on the severity of the abscess, the cause and the location on the body as to what is the best treatment. Always seek help with a vet, but understand the basics of what need to be done . You can reach out in our group as well facebook.com/groups/CavySavvyGuineaPigCommunity

  • @Emjay-jb4db
    @Emjay-jb4db 4 роки тому

    Just a bit of advice, if you'd lanced it at the bottom of the abcess it would have continued draining and she wouldn't have been able to RIP the skin open like she did.

    • @GuineaPigStuff
      @GuineaPigStuff  4 роки тому +1

      It was towards the bottom when the contents had emptied, it if had been lower down initially it would be very close to major arteries but also very close to the body once it had started to heal and reduce.

    I'm not trying to be critical here. I do like your videos and how you care for all your little piggies...but I don't think it's a good idea to rinse that wound with bath water.

      Hi Sharon this was not bath water but saline and for the purpose of clearing the coat and this area. She had been with her owner and then had torn the section out with her claw. So she was covered in pus of which the greater concern was flies. Saline is the best thing in this instance and from there she went straight to the vet and had the little tag removed.

      @@GuineaPigStuff Thank you for the reply. I'm glad everything worked out well. My concern was not so much with the water but with the germs in the water since the whole body went in. Not trying to be a stickler. I was thinking rinse the wound and then the rest of them. Saline was a good idea. Thank you for taking such good care of all those little piggies! They are just so precious! My son had a guinea pig, his name was Christopher Columbus because he liked to "adventure" around the house. Lol

    You could cover the wound with honey!!!!

    • @GuineaPigStuff
      @GuineaPigStuff  4 роки тому +1

      We do use honey for different things, but in this instance it would not work due to the location and the warmth of the body would make it mobile and moving down. Piggies love to lick and eat it and with the additional sugars and her diet already compromised this would not be recommended.

      Ricardo.....No you are not a vet!! Who are you trying to fool? She did exactly what the vet would do and how they'd do it! The piggy ripped it open with it's paw by accident, that's what caused it to rip, open the area and get it a little infected....this could of happened if the vet would have drained it! It was nothing she did!!! So stop being hateful and stop trying to pass yourself off as a veterinarian!!!! AND NO!!!! I'm not going to get confrontational with you over this, so don't go there!

      Atleast use the correct terminology if you're trying to pass yourself off as a vet lol. Pain relief was given, abscess was drained, then flushed, and left open to drain.. what else would a vet have done? Because their one actually turned her away. Are you aware that many vets turned away many of their patients during covid, causing their death? Well now you do.
