  • Corach Rambler was a superb winner of the Randox Grand National for trainer Lucinda Russell and jockey Derek Fox.
Successful at last month’s Cheltenham Festival, the nine-year-old moved powerfully throughout after starting as the 8-1 favourite, in a race that was delayed by around 15 minutes after protestors gained access to the track.
He jumped into the lead over the last and pulled away when passing the elbow, holding off a closing Vanillier with Gaillard Du Mesnil third and last year’s winner Noble Yeats running a gallant race under his big weight in fourth.
It was a second victory in the world’s greatest steeplechase for Russell and Fox, after One For Arthur in 2017.

What a horse and what a ride by Derek Fox. Without doubt the best National ride I have watched in many a year. He knew he was on the best horse and never moved a muscle until he jumped the last fence now that takes some self control and confidence in the biggest horse race of the year. Take a bow and congratulations to the brilliant trainer/team and the owners.

This is a late comment, but God, I remember this like it was yesterday. I had bet on a couple of horses, including Corach Rambler and Vanillier, but the latter was the one I was rooting for the most. I remember watching this on TV with my mother and brother, my heart pounding as the end of the race grew near, and I can't even lie when I say I started *screaming* like an absolute banshee when Vanillier climbed to 2nd. He literally came out of nowhere! I immediately started crying tears of joy as soon as he crossed the finish line; I was just so shocked, considering the fact that he had stayed at the back for the entire length of the race, then just out of nowhere, he suddenly bolted right to the front. A smart move by the jockey to save up his stamina! Not only that, but as I was choosing my horses from the newspaper, I had noticed that his description said he wasn't too great at jumping, and for this reason, the entire time, I was so scared that he would fall or miss a jump. I always get chills thinking about it, and even though he is not my horse, I'm still so proud of him. What a race!

I have followed NH racing for close to 70 years - especially BIG races. Despite the changes to make the jumps so easy (any horse can take lumps out and not to be slowed) there are far too many who fall, and far too many pulled up in distance racing. My suspicion, from a low quality rider's point of view, is that many horses are not trained to jump, nor are they trained for the distance they are required to run.

The height of these fences for a large proportion of the horses run are just too big , on top of the distance of the national creates lots of very tired horses mixed with the huge field what chance do you really have of avoiding terrible injuries and death ?? Hearing from the trainer's that tell us all how well looked after the horses are back at the stables does nothing for dead horses on the race track ! As horse racing fans we all now that these animals are not pets but surely they must still be given the respect of not being asked which is for most the impossible.
