      Thank you. Spruce are very interesting. You can get them to look great with a bit of wire. The real challenge is getting them to set in these positions.

    Tony goes tiny ! 🤔... 'Tiny Tony' ! 😄I adore small bonsai. For your first small bonsai, you did very well but like others said, now comes the hardest part, keeping them alive , especially through Summer. Many people who keep small bonsai (mame, shohin etc.) put them (with their pot) in a rather shallow tray of water and some gravel in Summer so they're easier to keep moist.
    I'm working on a hornbeam forest right now, but shohin size.

      Yes, I'm thinking of putting them in a tray of sand which I can keep moist when it gets hot. The hornbeam forest sounds great. I have one and I love it!

      Thanks Elric. Yes, I'm not sure the ones with hardly any root will make it, but I think with good watering the two bigger ones should have a good chance in the shade.

    Lovely! As a recent subscriber, I love the honesty on your channel. Thank you for sharing your experience with the tree with missing roots and the pests and what not. That’s what reality is like. 20-30% of the experiments may fail, and that’s, of course, ok. Not everyone shares like you do. So, thank you!

      Thank you George. It can be tempting to pretend that everything works out, but as you say, that's not reality.

    Lovely work, Tony! The big advantage of the little trees, is you get to refinement a lot quicker than the big trees. They are no easier though - if anything they are harder to get the proportions right; and before that is the added effort required to just keep the things alive! Good luck with those vine weevels, these babies don't have the root to spare . . .

    I think you chose the right pot. Contrast is mostly a good thing. I love contrast my self.

    These are great. I’ve not done a tiny tree, just remember to water them often, I’d imagine a shady spot will help with that.
    I can’t wait to see the final tree with some more intricate wiring at a later date.

      Hi Jake, yeah I think these will require at least a couple of waterings a day, and I'm really looking forward to going back in and doing some fine wiring on them especially the last one. You should get some going yourself mate!

    Nice work, they look great. Adorable little plants.
    Have you informed the garden centre that they possibly have a vine weevil infestation. They might have to spray their whole stock.

      Hi Marcus. I have now had vine weevil in plants from four different garden centers, so i think there is a big problem locally. I've just ordered a load of nematodes, so I'll be treating all my trees in the next week or two.

    Tony that middle leader on the 3rd tree at 13:47 I reckon that could be taken out for better taper. Nice vid!

      Yes, I was weighing that tree up for a chop. I think I might cut it at 13:53 allowing the branch that comes to the left to become the new leader. As you say that will make the taper much better

    I like the blue one. Poor little guy with no roots. Its handsome on top and all no bang on the bottom. I hope he makes it. The 3rd has a good taper. I find myself laughing at you when you giggle at yourself. I only have 6 trees. So I watch your videos waitng for mine to be ready to be played with. Or I collect my next few. Its barely spring in Indiana USA.

    Tony that top branch @ 19:18 could come back towards the centre more to create a new leader a tree with a conventional top section and a main cascading branch. Will be nicely proportionate to the pot also 😊

    Great work mate! I find it hard to keep those small ones alive. I think I maybe used a to free draining soil in the small pots. This year I put a layer with sand over the top to keep the soil moist. I hope all your trees are doing great this year.

      Yeah I know what you mean Chris. It's easy for these little trees to get lost and I suspect they will need watering a couple of times a day in summer.

    I very much like the pots three in from the left and three in from the right. I made a mold of a similar form and use it all the time to make mame pots.

    At least once a year when I'm spraying my fruit trees, all my bonais get a dose as well. It's working well for me, but don't know if it would help your bug problem. Good luck

      Hi Lori. all my treas have had winter wash, and I treat them all with an insecticide too. I've just ordered a lod of nematodes, so I'll be doing a video on treating all my trees with that when they arrive which should do the trick.

    Is this your normal bonsai soil? The finer particles makes the whole presentation look more miniature to me.

      Hi Beth. Yes this is my normal mix except I removed all the larger pieces of pine bark and tried to select the finer granules from the tub of soil.

    Morning Tony from large to tiny, interesting, let’s see if they go on to be healthy mama and Shito trees, some bonsai guys only grow these size of trees, not for me like you I prefer larger trees, trees I can see. All the best with them mate.

      I have a condition called essential tremor, but provided I don't drink caffeine, I'm generally ok!

      It's not a big deal to me Joe. I was diagnosed in my early twenties, but it's never got any worse luckily, and as long as I don't drink caffeine or alcohol it's not really a problem. It's just on the odd close-up that I do you can see the tremor, but c'est la vie!

    Beautiful choices. Do you ever wire your roots to give them stability in the pot? I haven't gotten the hang of that at all!

      Thank you. Yes I do indeed. I've done quite a lot of root wiring this winter to try to create exposed root bonsai in the future. It's tricky but great fun

    another great video, i have been following a you tube site called bonsaify, he does all mame trees, and he wires all his trees in position, i have a few small spruce type trees and am goung to have a go at mame, also a load of small hollys, 14 in fact, dont quite what to do with them, and ideas of a video for this

      Hi John. I would say that Bonsaify is probably my favourite youtube channel for learning. A lot of what I have come to understand about bonsai development in the early stages comes from Eric. Good luck with the holly trees. They are very strong growers, but tricky

      I varies for each species, but these spruce will be wired until perhaps mid summer and then I'll have to rewire them again next spring because they are so springy.

      I think Tony left them like that in order for them to grow well. Also, Tony didn't really subscribe to the traditional conventions on aesthetics.
