  • Deep in the woods of the Green Swamp Wilderness Preserve is a historical homestead site and cemetery known as The Stewart Homestead. In the early 1900's the Stewart's built their homestead and lived out here in those days. Until one tragic evening when they were sadly murdered by axe while they slept. According to research the motive was robbery and it was Mrs. Stewart's Grandson and his best friend that were involved. Isham and Sarah Stewart lived here and were the victims may they rest in peace. They were buried nearby the site and the area today is a reminder of the past and some of the history that remains in this vast wilderness. The Stewart Homestead Murders took place In May of 1918. A couple Isham (B. 1860) & Sarah Stewart (B. 1845) were sleeping in their cabin deep in the Central Florida woods. That night, two young men crept up and broke in using axes to murder them both. The Sheriff’s report said the bodies weren’t discovered for about a week and when they were found, the cabin was covered with vultures. The coroner’s report stated they were both killed in their bed. The motive was robbery and it was the woman’s grandson and his friend. Both Josh Browning (Grandson of Sarah Stewart) & John Tucker (his friend) were eventually caught. Today hiking trails (The Florida Trail) are nearby and it's an interesting site to see while hiking through here. Many have come by this place over the decades now to pay their respects and see the site. It's important to keep these areas preserved and undisturbed so that the memories and history live on for generations. Please be respectful of the site if you do visit. Special thanks to the Florida Trail Association, Heartland Chapter of the Florida Trail association and all the volunteers who help take care of and maintain the site. Nearby is an old cattle dipping vat which was built around 1929 after the Stewart's lived here and was part of a ranching area as well I imagine. Enjoy the adventure and thank you! My goodness ! Such a sad story . My grandma was born in 1903 She would've been 15 when that happened Living in Lacoochie she most certainly knew about it . She married at 16 moving to the next county. Small communitys there in the swamp every one knew of each other. Her dad ran a small general store the news must have garnered talk for weeks . They were hard working folks and crimes of this nature very seldom heard of. Times were tough and the end of WWI brought Spanish flu I can see the community come together and honor their neighbors. Nature has truly done its job in restoring the beauty of the place .

Glad to see its still standing and it hasn't been vandalized. I bet that's because its about a 5 mile walk in.
