Vegan Mayo vs. Non-Vegan Mayo // BLIND TASTE TEST

  • Duncan has long said that vegan mayonnaise is just as good if not BETTER than regular mayo, and therefore there is zero reason for regular mayo to exist. But can he tell the difference in a blind taste test? Time to put the... mayo... where his mouth is. Yeah.
    Why vegan mayo? Traditional mayonnaise contains eggs; egg-laying hens suffer tremendously, even on "cage free" farms.

    _So You Wanna Trigger a Bunch of Vegans_

  • @aelfwynn8

    Disregard the bewilderment and disappointment in the comment section. We all know you didn't support animal suffering. The non-vegan mayo was already purchased by a neighbor. And we also know that a literal teaspoon of that unhealthy shit is not going to kill you. It doesn't matter what anyone else says they'd do. Your channel is actually making a difference and turning a l lot of folks on to the plant based vegan lifestyle. I found your channel super supportive when I made the instant jump from omnivore to vegan. Keep it up, you rock!

      crustyflatonion, You've made a massive oversight. He made a video that has reached 41,000 people so far. His neighbour may be amongst them. We can actually calculate how much his relative contribution to the animal industry would be. I did a quick online search Hellmann's mayo costs $3.48 per jar. A jar contains 30oz of mayo. 30oz is 180 teaspoons. It's more likely he consumed half a teaspoon, which is 1/360th of the jar. This means his relative contribution to the cost of the jar was in fact a ninth-tenths of a cent. His relative contribution to the animal industry was less than a penny, his contribution to veganism potentially out-weighed it many-fold. -You're welcome.

    • @aelfwynn8
      @aelfwynn8 5 років тому +3

      Crustyflatonion I'm sorry, what is the difference between a neighbor discarding it or lending it? I don't see the logic at all, and you made no argument or case to back up that statement. Say more on that please. The second point you make I also disagree with. If even one non-vegan watched it and decided to switch to a vegan mayo then that is a clear win. How is it not a win to change one mind at a time? Your argument is reminiscent of so many people saying "my vote doesn't matter because it's just one vote." That's how Trump was elected.

    • @aelfwynn8
      @aelfwynn8 5 років тому +4

      crustyflatonion Oh, I think I understand what you're saying now, but I do disagree. You're imbuing the product itself with the value intention of the person who purchased it. Gosh, I so disagree. The value intention of the purchaser does not inherently transfer to the second hand consumer in my worldview. With that logic, a pair of pants purchased from a charity shop like Goodwill would carry the karma of the sweat shop it was initially made in, through who knows how many owners, until it finally arrived at Goodwill for sale. The purchaser of that product, even though that consumer made a conscious choice to support a charity to which the item was donated, would be seen by you as betraying a value we all share. I just don't think that line of thinking is in alignment with producing the change we're all trying to make in the world.

    • @betsysmith9176
      @betsysmith9176 5 років тому +3

      Aelfwynn, I had the exact some charity thought. I also buy clothing second hand to avoid sweatshops. The relative value of the half a teaspoon of mayo only exists in the case of repurchase, and it's an assumption we have no basis to make. Also, if they are saying they don't support it at all: Do you buy vegan mayo from companies that sell non-vegan mayo? Do you only purchase from vegan brands? Do you shop at grocery stores that sell non-vegan products? Do you only eat at all vegan restaurants? Do you drive a car? Do you own a cell phone? This kind of 'perfectionist' logic is easily picked apart. Veganism is not about perfection. Batteries are not vegan, yet Crustyflatonion is still online, probably wearing pants, and probably eating food purchased from a shop, and probably hasn't had much influence on 41,000 viewers.

    Duncan is HELPING veganism because he understands the priority of principles over rules in this case. The principle is maximizing reduction of harm to animals, not orthorexic adherence to rules. The principle is connecting with non-vegans, not preaching to the choir.

  • @veridianroots

    calm down everyone. the real mayo was borrowed from their neighbors - so they didn't contribute by buying it. furthermore, mayo is almost pure oil and the egg is insignificant for your body when trying literally 1/4 teaspoon. if you wouldn't try it, don't. but don't expect something from other people especially when it's about trace amounts
    - ✌️ from a 8 year vegan that's been through the militant phase 😜

    • @sofiamilla544
      @sofiamilla544 5 років тому +3

      veridian roots so is it then okay as a “vegan” to eat free hot dogs at a neighbors bbq? or free eggs from a neighbors chickens? where does that logic end. I just can’t get behind purposely eating nonvegan things unless it’s a very dire situation.

    • @veridianroots
      @veridianroots 5 років тому +14

      you just said it "you can't get behind" that doesn't mean everyone sets their boundaries that way. with the attitude of all or nothing you ostracize more people than attract them. how great would it be if everyone just ate 1/4 teaspoon of mayo in years?

    • @xtinkerbellax3
      @xtinkerbellax3 5 років тому +5

      In general when non vegans see vegans "making exceptions" they tend to view veganism as a diet that people can "cheat" on. People cutting back or limiting their consumptions of animal products is great, but if you're vegan it is all or nothing when it comes to diet, you can't willingly and knowingly eat animal products sometimes and be vegan.

    • @veridianroots
      @veridianroots 5 років тому +13

      i personally am for people calling themselves whateverthefuck they want if they try to make more ethical choices. a label is good and all but if it's alienating others it doesn't make any sense.
      and let's not exaggerate what happened in this video. they made a video about which mayo is better and if there's even a need for a non-vegan variety anymore. their conclusion was that vegan mayo is superior in their minds. that's a video that could potentially bring non-vegans to buy a vegan mayo

    • @sexyjamal7774
      @sexyjamal7774 5 років тому +6

      I would argue that him trying mayonnaise once is justified because the video shows that the vegan alternatives are at least on par or better than the real mayonnaise and could thus result in non-vegans reducing their animal product consumption.

    I'm not at all shocked that you tried non-vegan mayo for science. I broke training the one time I visited New Orleans to taste a beignet, because there were no vegan beignets at the time. Then I went home and veganized the hell out of it. Veganism is a choice, not a superstition.

      I did the same in Japan. I did try to keep to vegan, but there was very little option and god damn it I wanted to try real Japanese food. So for 10 days, I went pescatarian(sp?) and enjoyed the Japanese culture and food as much as I was willing to go (didn't eat any beef/chicken/pork, still) after I'd already been vegan for a year at that point, and when I got back, I went directly back to being vegan. It's incredibly irritating that there are vegans that will hate on other vegans just because they're "not vegan enough" but yet, they're still using electronics which if they really thought they were perfect, they wouldn't even be doing that. They'd be off the grid, living off the land 100%. Hmpf.

      You are technically saying not being vegan is a choice. Eating animal products is not a choice to be respected when there is a innocent victim involved. We can give person respect, but not respect the decision. This is what he is creating, thinking that you can choose either animal mayo or vegan mayo, all ‘personal’ choice.🧐

    I agree, literally NO reason for non vegan mayo to exist! My mom has made many dishes using vegan mayo for work parties and family gatherings that use mayo as a main ingredient, like potato salad, and macaroni salads. She never mentions that they are vegan but people always rave about her food and ask for the recipe and she gets a kick out of telling them it’s vegan once they’ve ate it 😌

Thank you for this experiment, thank you for putting this out there, probably knowing full well that a lot of people would go nuts over half a teaspoon of real mayo. Justdege but you do realize that the number of people this likely convinces to switch to vegan mayo probably saves hundreds of male chickens, right?

    • @smushface3999
      @smushface3999 5 років тому +5

      Justdege he didn’t compromise his values though, he simply did something that’s inconsistent with *your* values, which is his right, that actually has more potential for positive impact (in the form of getting non-plant-based people to adopt vegan alternatives) than comparing vegan products amongst themselves. In fact, that kind of self-righteous “you’re a murderer if you veer off this path for even a moment” attitude is a huge reason why so many people don’t stick to vegan and vegetarian diets in the long term (this attitude is also ineffective advocacy that can even deter people from adopting plant-based diets). By shaming people for not living up to some unrealistic, pristinely warped ideal of purity, you make veganism rigid and unsustainable. I’m sure you use plenty of things you don’t realize aren’t vegan (e.g., tires, white sugar, glycerin in pretty much any personal care product, certain kinds of glue, etc). Using some non-vegan things is pretty unavoidable, as are consuming non-vegan things when you have no way of knowing how every ingredient was derived; to spend one’s life obsessing and criticizing over these tiny things that have minimal impact is unnecessary, emotionally exhausting, and not sustainable. It’s much more effective to focus on the larger things that have significant impact (i.e., mostly or completely abstaining from meat consumption in the long-term) and avoiding shaming people for maybe consuming a rare bite or few (whether intentional or not) of animal-product containing food, because it makes people feel less restricted and judged so they can better see themselves seamlessly incorporating plant-based eating into their life.

My son is going on a Youth Service Project to New Orleans to help the people that are still suffering from the aftermath of hurricane Katrina and we just did a big New Orleans themed fundraiser for which I made you tuber, Sweet Potato Soul's, Potato salad recipe for 80 people , yes I said 80! I used Veganaise and it was awesome. Most of it was eaten. No one was told about it and consequently no one noticed the difference or talked about it and for that I am pretty freakin proud. I used Reduced fat Veganaise from Whole Foods and it would take a pretty amazing product to sway me away from veganaise. Great video guys! You bring up- no joke- a very important topic- Mayonaise. Thanks for doing this Duncan. This helps me recommend vegan alternatives to my family members who aren't vegans, knowing the taste might be similar to what they are used to.
    I read some of those comments condemning you for trying your neighbors mayo. That's a tough spot to be in, because in one hand you're trying to attract new people to explore vegan alternatives but at the same time existing vegans can come out as too strong and judgemental. I guess finding that middle ground where you're not too soft or too strong on veganism while still veganizing people can be complicated at times. I just want to motivate you to keep doing what you're doing, because some people need this kind of content to ease their transition to veganism.
    Everyone has their own style of activism and not everyone will approve lol. As can be evident in this video lol. But thanks for this Duncan. Some of us have family that do better with this kind of approach at the beginning of their vegan journey.

    Granted I've only been vegan a month or so now and I personally wouldn't want to willingly have real mayo, but at the same time I do think that a) It's just a spoonful of borrowed mayo (nice thouch) and b) I think for the purposes of an experiment like this, the good it does is greater than the harm it does.
    But I also think that if we're asking meat eaters to try a vegan diet then a little spoonful of mayo is kind of a small concession to make. Maybe I'm wrong. I still probably wouldn't have done it even for the video but w/e. It'll be interesting to see how much people argue about this in the comments I guess.

Whole Foods has Follow Your Heart mayonnaise, and I can seriously use that as regular mayonnaise with zero problem. That stuff actually taste as good or better than regular Hellman's Mayo. Seriously, major props from a major non vegan.

    You guys are seriously the best. I was a hardcore meat eater who has been striving towards being vegan around two years... Your channel has been a major encouragement and motivation! I have been eating vegan food exclusively for about a month, I watch your videos for inspiration! I so relate with Liz, it's so hard when it's engrained in your system and watching her journey has been essential! My husband ( whose given up meat as well) will watch your videos exclusively because he is a videographer and enjoys the filming style. Thank you for what you do! 🎉

    This comment section is in such a state. You did a good video guys. I don't think it is such a big deal. And ultimately it is your guys' decision what to try and what not to try. Everyone is acting like they have a say in what you can do or not. And it's not like you were contributing towards animal cruelty, and ultimately you made a compelling argument against animal product based mayo.

    I love this video. I’ve been vegan for a year, but the past few months I’ve been struggling and thinking about going back to being vegetarian/mostly vegan. I feel so much internal pressure and worry about backlash from vegans for slipping back. Or other people not respecting my own boundaries if I go back to being vegetarian but still want a mainly vegan diet. I feel the weight of the world on my shoulders sometimes as a vegan and I occasionally crumble when my depression/anxiety are worse off for the day. This video helps me not give up and to keep doing my best regardless of what others say. Keep questioning and keep exploring ways to make the world a better place. Love you guys 😊

      I know this is from a year ago but I hate to see the emotional turmoil this was causing you. You absolutely can't let people influence your mental health like that. You need to eat the way that is doable for you. The fact that you are aware that your choices make a difference is what is important. The militant vegan movement is doing a disservice to the concept of a plant based diet. So many people are intimidated by the "rules" that they don't even try. You just do the best you can for your circumstances and lifestyle and don't worry about the social pressure. Good luck.

      @@theizzyinsane So good to hear that! I have been a vegetarian with a vegan lifestyle ( no leather, down pillows etc.)for over 35 years. I haven't gone completely vegan for personal reasons but I read and watch a lot of vegan info. The judgement makes me crazy. It changes what is a positive world changing effort in to a mean girls lunch table. I am so glad you have found your own way in the movement. It's a real accomplishment to work through a psychological issue and be happy with your choices. Keep at it and you'll be your best self.

      I don’t know if you meant this to be funny but I laughed so hard. I think they said they borrowed this from their neighbors so they didn’t actually pay for factory farmed eggs. Not that I would personally eat animal products on purpose, even in the context of a UA-cam video. But I don’t think it’s necessarily harmful if he didn’t actually buy the product and it was a one time occurance.

    • @staacey1000
      @staacey1000 5 років тому +51

      You are simply looking at this too black and white. He created the video in the hopes of detering people from buying regular Hellmans, in that he demonstrated how the vegan version has better taste and is therefore a better product to purchase. However, if he were to simply state this to a non vegan, it would not be a credible source because of his bias. Thus, he did a blind taste test, eliminating the bias.
      As to your point about borrowing the chicken nuggets, that would only be valid if he borrowed the mayo for the simple pleasure of enjoying the mayo, which he did not. His undertaking was to pursude nonvegans to purchase a vegan product in the future.
      So if you do the math, one teaspoon of consumed nonvegan mayo could prevent the purchase of larger quantities of said mayo in the future. And that would snowball into less product being manufactured since we live in a capitalist society.
      This is analogous to the vegan food scientists at Beyod Foods who state they do sample real meat during the production of the Beyond Burger and other products. In doing so, they can create a product that discourages the purchase of real meat in the future by consumers, therefore ultimately benefitting the vegan movement and the animals.

    I feel weird about this video. I don't think it's a shame or anything, cause I think you did far more for veganism with this channel than many other "strict" vegan did. And I think your work is usefull and super cool ! Just... It still bothers me. It's as if (and maybe it wasn't your intention at all) veganism was a matter of taste. Well I'm sure you didn't stop eating regular mayo cause vegan mayo was tastier... Maybe a quick reminder in the video of why you originally stopped eating animal products would have been useful to people not particularly close to veganism who would watch this video ? (I'm not english, sorry for my mistakes) Thanks for what you do for veganism :)

      For some people it is. You need to broaden your perspective. Someone just starting and wanting to become Vegan.. For a lot of these people it's going to be important that the products they're buying taste as good as what they're sacrificing. It will make the transition easier. Plus, it's for science.

    Ok so reading the comments was a mistake. Usually so fun and light hearted. D&L, I'll say this: you, and maybe a handful of other youTubers , really do the hard work of fighting back against the perception people have that vegans are hateful, irrational, and (eating) disordered. Someone said it way deep in the muck below---it's about the living by principles not rules. Living by principles requires critical thinking. Without it, I can see how it would be hard to grasp the net positive of this experiment.
