Glidecam Training Vol. 2. The Circle Up and Down
- In the new webseries in cooperation with Glidecam USA, Stefan shows the basic movements with the handheld stabilizer from Glidecam.
In this episode you will get some tips for circle around a object, and how to go up and down.
A bouns: regards to the first episode, we come back to the "never ever bend your knees", and show some good exercises.
And my friends once again:
we all need to bend our knees to walk but not to crouch!
Stand up straight relax and walk as usual with slight bends in the knees that occur when walking upright :-))
If you want more on this Glidecam webseries:

Probably some of the most in depth, highly detailed and wonderfully produced training compilations currently present on UA-cam. I can't say how much value the tutorials you make hold for both indie and even professional grade videographers out there. Thank you so much for both your efforts and your dedication to make these tutorials.
Thank you very much. I really appreciate that. 😘
Your videos are perfect. I will get out and train again instead of swearing at the glidecam! If anyone ever asks, or if I eventually want to help others, I will send them here!
Thank you 😊
HANDS DOWN this series is the BEST training for a glide cam I've found on You Tube. THANK YOU Stefan for sharing your knowledge, expertise and experience!
I got Glidecam XR-Pro After watching your video. Man you are the best and rocking all over UA-cam. really thanks for your perfect tutorials .
Thanks MAF ;-)
This video shows why Germans are the best trained and most professional workers in the world !!!! Thanks for noch einander tolles Video !!!
Kevin P thank you. I really appreciate that 😊
Danke, I have watched Vol 1 & 2 so far and must say that these are far the best Glidecam tutorials I have viewed on UA-cam.
AERIAL VIDEOS & IMAGES by David Wilson thanks.. I really appreciate that
These videos are both educational and funny. So well done
Super Video Stefan!
today I did the suggested training and it was very good, i can feel myself making microadjustments to my body and movement and storing it in muscle memory ! but I am sure my neighbours are beginning to worry for my mental health haha !
very good ;-)
Thank you for this instruction. Nicely done and I appreciate that you inject a little humour into your work, keep smiling :)
😂
les meilleurs conseils pour glidecam sont ici. Merci vraiment ca m'aide beaucoup a progressé.
You are welcome
Screw this guys whos spreading walk like a Ninja, dumb idea just spun randomly. Listen to this guy it actually make sense if you think properly. Glad I discover this video. SUBS!
Thank you 😊
Vielen Dank. Macht Spass!!
I like your style. good video, clear and not bored
thanks to sharing with us your knowledge
Thanks 😊
Stefan, thanks for this video. I been looking for training video like this for while on how to use a steady cam. thanks again
+rcabaccang thanks and you are very welcome ;-)
Cheers
Stefan
So happy I found your channel mate! Just got a handheld stabilizer and learned so much thanks to you!! thank you (:
Great Demonstration Stefan. Thank you.
+John Davison you are welcome ;-)
the man, the myth, the legend...stefan czech. thank you for these dope tutorials dude
Hahaha... thanks 🙏
great work great training i really needed this info
I'm really loving your glidecam episodes. Can you please give us some tips to keep the horizontal straight in the next episode ?
+Youssef Gharbi ...Thanks man. Yes I have a tipp for you. Watch my first episode, I show how to hold the centerpost. With 3 finger (you see that a lot here on youtube) its like runing a maraton with one leg. Difficulty. Put all 5 finger incl. the pinky at the post. Gives you much more control.
Cheers
@ 1:41 the guy points a gun straight to your face and 1 second laters fires 4 bullets... now thats epic!
You shouldn't be here watching this vid if you have a tiny comprehension. Did you actually think the gun is loaded? Before they film they will consider safety first.
Thanks Lloyd ;-)
Thanks for this training!
Thanks man ;-)
Excellent video. Interesting contradiction - my Devin Graham Glidecam (same one Stefan uses in this video) came with a video tutorial produced by Devin instructing to bend the knees. My back got tired quickly doing this while a 4.2lb video camera was mounted. Sometimes I think bending knees or crouching is needed to maintain camera height but seems not bending/crouching is best. Still learning, practicing, and finding out the techniques will take time to master. Love the ninja comment.
Neil Satterly thanks. But you know, there are so many “master of UA-cam” out there...! Ask them to make a slow and steady shot. And they will fail because, it’s physics.
Running is easy because of moving mass. Stay trying and become better.
Your videos are really great. Thanks for your lessons. 😊🌼
Thank you 😊
I love that cup training
Y.P. Putra its a good starting point
Wieder ein sehr gutes Tutorial!
+Maxx McGee - ImpactStudios
Danke dir ;-)
Cheers
Stefan
"Slow is smooth, smooth is fast" SGT. Bob Lee Swagger from the Shooter!!
Hahaha... it’s a old saw,... older than this funny movie hahaha
Next week? Waiting for that please!
+Kenedy Torcatt ...here it is: ua-cam.com/video/bQASpvtLVhE/v-deo.html
Stefan sir.... superb knowledge and guidance for my types of all bigener....💐🙏🏻🌺🤔🙄👍🏻👑👑💖
My pleasure 😃
4:24, nice skatepark. Too bad there wasn't anyone there at the time, could have got some great footage. Fantastic video, these are super valuable!
There a milions of skater videos out there... LOL
Very good tips, but I need to really start learn to setup the balance. My last video is crazy wobbly, but that was also my first one :-)
I like the random trampoline in the skatepark.
Now i am going to try on Flfilm Mini 2000 :)
U are a master!!
Thanks
Tks for this video ! Love your training
Thank a lot. You are welcome
Love you man . thanks for the perfect training ....
Thanks a lot for your nice comment
Thanks so much! A wealth of information.
you are very welcome
nice work....
+Kevin Dreher Danke Kevin.
Can someone help with balancing the hd 4000 with the 5d mark iii
Very well explained technics! Thank you so much again!
Thanks
Hi Stefan, thank you for your training videoes, I just got myself a glidecam DG signature. I am still an amateur and I found the whole system is quite heavy especially when you need to support them with one hand. I need to have stronger arms.
Hi Byron, thanks for your comment. The thing is, you hold the system with one arm and you have to hold the gimbal stable. Take a look at this: ua-cam.com/video/Ohw3Y2hCvkU/v-deo.html
Cheers Stefan
Nice video. Thank you for the tips. Have you tried the finger tapping method with your left hand? Would you recommend it? Thanks!
Where can I find more information on "low mode"... this looks VERY useful for what I plan to film. Thank you!
Excellent!
geniale Tipps! Danke. Thanks :)
+hoschie86 ...gerne ;-)
Und es geht bald weiter. Cheers Stefan
Walking with a glass of water is a very good exercise for glidecam 👍🏻
Alles symetrisch?
Funny when he said the only ninjas he knew were in the 80s doing ninja movies, and not 1 of them wanted to learn the Glidecam...lol
but its true ;-)
Very helpful youtuber. Thank you from Philippines. ❤️
Voltes Five , thanks, you are welcome
one thing that will improve the heel to toe technique noticeably is wearing any Nike shoes with Nike Air technology
mooore! this is awesome thank you!
Thank man, it will come. The next week> Focal length
That's a good topic, I'm currently trying to make cool shots with my 50mm f1,8 or my 105mm f2,8 on my glidecam and it's so hard compared to a wide angle lens!
+From Elio's Lens here it is: ua-cam.com/video/bQASpvtLVhE/v-deo.html
Is there any reason why mine is so heavy? I can’t hold mine for a minute. Other than weak muscles. But, I’m not a weak guy, I can easily lift weights. But, this is a different type of strength. Is it common to take breaks during a shoot and hold the glidecam with both hands?
Hi Jcorpus, thanks for Your comment. First of all, let me know what setup you use. How much weight you put on the top-camera side and bottom plate. How high you build up. That’s often the reason for a lot of counter weight.
@@StefanCzech glidecam xr-4000 with Canon 80D with a sigma lens 18-35 1.8
Ok, not to heavy. Did you check out part 6 for this series? Glidecam Training Vol.6 balancing in 5min. ...ok, say 2min.
ua-cam.com/video/PArEulxKDzo/v-deo.html
Please follow this advice and let me know if that will help. 😃
weldone sir
Thanks
Do you have any training on wearing the vest and the proper tension each spring should have?
Hi David, yes it will come in one of the next parts of this series. Stay tuned
thanks. Cant wait
Well, I'm afraid you'll have to.
It's It is an artist. Very impressive.
OSS 66 thanks
Sehr gut erklärt !
Vielen Dank!
Great video tutorial, I have a question - how do you adjust for wind? I have a mic on top of my camcorder that really catches the wind and makes it sway about, is there any way I can stop it from swinging in the wind without taking the microphone off?
Put some extra weights on the bottom plate. When there is a lot of wind, i think it's ok if the drop time is a bit longer(like 3 sec)
Hi, what do you mean 3sec. droptime is better when you have a windy day?`Totaly wrong way. Make your system more bottumheavy.
I don´t thing most of the beginner can handle a 3sec.DT. Stay at 2sec. and it will be better.
Cheers
+Stefan Czech Thanks Stefan. I will try adding more weight and test it out.
How do you keep a person in focus with a low aperture like 1.4 or 3.5 on a camera without autofocus?
+ClashOfClans u calculate ur focus distance and try to keep ur subject within that distance when you are following or he's following you
Excellent stuff!
Thanks
Super!!!
Thank you 😊
Regarding the walking, you do some sort of ninja walk, but you do the most upright variant possible.
Nop, there is no Ninja in the house.
I never saw a Nnja doing serious camera work until UA-camr Kids shooting skater videos😊
I notice that the handle is canted a bit. When first figuring out how to use this thing, the general rule was to keep the handle (close to) perfectly vertical. Doesn’t a canted drip create imbalance and/or swaying?
No, if you don’t touch the top camera plate it won’t effect.
excellent
sarath kumar thanks
That only thing which is disturbing me the most and m so disheartened bout is how to set focus while using a glidecam!! 😢😢😢😇😇😇 plz suggest me somethin helpful!!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
i think you have to get a wireless focus system like the aputure dec
Parker Walbeck has a tutorial of focusing while glidecaming on his youtube channel
thanks a lot :)
you are welcome
Interested and useful
Thanks
Thank's a lot for this Training 😉
PSDesign you are welcome
I appreciate the useful info but did you really move in front of a live gun like that?
It’s filmmaking,…it’s filmmaking ;-)
@@StefanCzech I'm not sure if you are saying 'it's filmmaking, somethings are just worth the risk...' Or 'it's filmmaking, it's clearly fake...' I'm a VFX artist and I know it's not fake, my guess is that they were either blanks or you are just crazy. You don't look crazy so I'm taking a stab and saying blanks. Just be aware though, Brandon Lee died from blanks and he was the son of Bruce Lee! Anyway, thanks once again for the content. That ninja walk is all over YT and it always felt weird when I tried it.
Sorry for bad answer. The second of course. It’s a mater of filming and cut/editing. Shoting with blanks is risky at all. But never risk you life for a movie 😊
Thank you!
You are welcome
Merci beaucoup
You are welcome
Can you review the new Glidecam XR PRO????
+Hoàng Lê Minh ...hi, the XP Pro is very similar to the older 2000/4000HD. What I show here are rules for any kind of Glidecam stabilizer
Cheers
Stefan
+Hoàng Lê Minh Hi, I made this for a local dealer. He didn´t put me in the description, but you will recognise my voice ;-)
ua-cam.com/video/ocZMZ_pDuwk/v-deo.html
Thank you very much!
Brilliant
joby john thanks :-)
Good
Thanks
I don't know how ninjas move but Swat and Military personnel have bent knees when they operate in close quarters. This is to keep the platform for the weapon stable. Bent knees also allow for quicker response to stairs and objects, or when ducking and strafing (lateral engagement of the target) are required. Pointing a firearm is in many ways the same as pointing a camera on a Glidecam.
Thanks for you comment. I´m pretty sure, you mixed somethings up.
An M4 weights around 3,5kg incl. ammunition. Plus an EoTech or Aimpoint reddot on top and you are around 4,3kg. How long takes a raid? 5-10min. over max. distance of 200-300m?
A normal Glidecam setup like a Smooth Shooter and camera is about 7 to 10kg.
With bigger cameras between 10-18kg. And that for much longer sometimes.
The Glidecam will do the stabilization work. Not you knees.
If you don´t use a stabilizer, like your weapons guys, than „smooth legs“ makes sense.
Stefan
But when u were running u bended ur knees. Plz tell this
Please read the description on top!
@@StefanCzech oh. My bad. Thanks dude. Ur series really helped a lot
@@AbdulQadir-dc8se perfect
+hoschie86 Danke 😃👍👍
My Glidecam is great at pointing at the ground, then the sky, then the ground, then the sky....
ok, than you have a problem?
Stefan Czech Yep. I've tried more weight. Less weight. Lighter lens. Heavier lens. It only gets worse. It will also spin on its own, even when not walking.
Most important thing is, not to get too light glidecam "knock of from china." (I know, thats what you are thinking about anyway at beginning) Buy heavier one, that stabilizes the combo even more and you guide hand touches wont disturb the combo too much. Also like he does in this video NEVER bend your knees, stand up and walk toe to heel and vice versa. The cup with water is best training.
Ps, 20 years of walking toe to heel with steadicams etc ;P
terosyva thanks ... I really appreciate that.
Cheers Stefan
terosyva I bought one of those "knock off" cheap ones (£30) and it's amazing. Once I balanced it, it was just heavenly. It's about the camera man in regards to steadicams
Perfect
Thanks
Autoren, Regie, Schauspiel, Technik
👍
Where it is available in Dubai?
I've got a CANON EOS 550D, and my camera seems to be lighter than the glidecam itself. Any tips?
+E7Editing HI, depending on you Glidecam model. If you are lucky to have a DGS, you can stripp down any weight and adjust the gimbal only. If you have the new XR Pro, put a weightplate on the camera top plate. So it depends on you Glidecam model.
Stefan Czech I've got the HD-2000!
***** How?
+E7Editing ...put all weight off and extent the center post. If this is not ok, put one weightplate at front and backside of the lower plate. It shoudl work.
Cheers Stefan
What brand boots do you have ?
+gunslinger „brazen46“ fourtysix ....HAIX Black Eagle Athletic 10 Mid Desert
Thanks Stefan i just ordered them, thank god you messaged i almost orders Bates or Danner boots
the footwork can be named "tactical walk"
or something like this ;-)
Stefan - I have Devin Graham glidecam with a gh4 camera. Two weights each side on bottom and one weight plus extra quick release on top. It balances very nice when standing still but when I move it sways left to right or right to left. Do you have any remedy for this ???
Ben Fleay hy, yes check the dynamic balance.
Spinn the vertical axis and it had to Spinn perfect. You don't need the weight on the top.
The DGS had the adjustability of the gimbal position. That's the big advantage
Stefan Czech I have same problem trying but it's still wobbles not as much but definitely not as it should be I have lumix g85 it's pretty light using 100g weights per side my dynamic balance is not good and I can't find right spot( made a video maybe someone will help
Tnx
"this is not the walking dead" hahahahaa
LOL
don't walk like stupid ninja.. lol :) very helpful. thank you
Thanks
gold ! but I ve just bought Wildcat III not Glidecam sorry :) subbed bytheway
casroy777 the principals are the same
Can I start with 100$ glidcam? Is it good as yours
Don’t think so
Of course you can start with a $100 glidecam. I use a $60 knock off and with enough practice and patience you can get excellent results. You pay for what you get so obviously it will be easier to get better results with better glidecams. It's harder and sometimes damn near impossible to get cheap glidecams balanced perfectly. Cheap ones don't have the ability to adjust where the handle is on the main shaft and don't have nice fat cheese plates with accurate fine tuning adjustment knobs. But as with a lot of stuff, equipment is only a part of the equation.
Hi Stefan, What do you think of the Glidecam Tru Horizon?
+Femi Abolude hi, there will be a Review and some tips coming this year
Thank you Stefan. I'm new to glidecam and stabilizers and I just got the glidecam DGS and truhorizon. The truhorizon makes my setup way heavier. I'm about returning it and with your training videos focusing on my skills to get great shots. Thanks!
Don't bend your knees unless you are a ninja.
never meet some one of thise ;-)
You have to train this
Jepp 😊
