Thanks Jason. Quite helpful to see as I begin my second pastel painting. I am used to colored pencil and I will try to keep remembering what you say... with pastel I can start with darks and add lights on top. Is a big change, really.

I always wanted to try pastel for my animals portrait cause I think it would be easier then using color pencil ,I used graphite and color pencils for my portrait and haven't done a animals portrait really in color

Hi Jason Morgan
I hope you don’t mind me asking, I am a pet portrait artist, I currently use Derwent Pastels, and I really struggle to get my pastel pencils sharp! I was just wondering if you had any advice on how to get them nice and sharp!?
I have LOTS of videos about sharpeners on my youtube channel
I see you used Pitt Pastel pencils, but it looks like also at least 2 other brands. What brands are these pastel pencils?
Perhaps more importantly, are their certain brands/types of pastel pencils you suggest for a beginner/novice?
I've never used pastels beyond an unsatisfactory attempt in a coloring book with cheap craft store brand oil pastels.
He normally uses Stabillo Carbothellos and Caran Dache pencils too 🙂
my 2 favs are PITT and Carbothello, but I use any brands
Thank goodness nobody show up yet. unsplash photo give me a buoyant that no body accuse me of using their work to create a beautiful pastel pet portrait . Sometimes photo is a landmine. Untouchable though is beautiful and free . Even like me , put back foot and chest , attempting to look different than the original photo . it’s still a counterfeit. A cat company called me to ceased immediately .
Why do you Make the 2 1/2 study BOARING, Just add the HELP to know, one you have an idea the anatomy of the "SKULL" of the dog. and add parts Orbit of the eye, Cranium of the head Mandible of the jaw. And when you show JUST the sketch, show the lines of the ears, eyes, nose, the under mandible, so viewer learn. Several said to me YOU, Trace And Transfer Why is it STREET ARTISTS in that short time can do a person while on the subway, or stop them on the street, but can not teach us to do animals fast Those that know the anatomy, do it, but too busy, and not interested in teaching, they have books to sell, DO YOU A HAVE SUCH A BOOK? That would help a lot.
