As time passed, different people in the group began to have emotional and/or intellectual conflicts with each other and sides began to be formed, eventually leading to the dissolution of this group as well as the comraderie she had felt and now missed. When she had described all that had occurred and asked me what had she done wrong I replied, "You joined a group."

I used to teach world history. When teaching about the Holocaust I was often asked “How could the German neighbors turn on their Jewish neighbors that maybe they had known their whole life?” A great question because I often thought it! That along with other atrocities people committed against the fellows in their own countries! As I watch things unfold in our country I now have a better understanding of exactly how this could be possible!
It's people who feel small and want to be part of something larger. People want to be in the "in" crowd. It's popular to be in the woke crowd nowadays. People will do things they normally wouldn't to feel like they belong to part of something. German nationalism was the popular movement in those days and these types of people I refer to would do anything to be part of it.
I have a friend who recently moved to a new town where she didn't know anyone. She became involved with a random and diverse group of people who all shared a similar interest revolving around their pets. As time passed, different people in the group began to have emotional and/or intellectual conflicts with each other and sides began to be formed, eventually leading to the dissolution of this group as well as the comraderie she had felt and now missed. When she had described all that had occurred and asked me what had she done wrong I replied, "You joined a group."
